no...[edit]

I don't think so, after some edits... Sjsharksrs 07:14, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

they should remove the islanders being a new york city team. they are a long island team in nassau county. plus, nobody in the city cares about the islanders. i should know.

Most popular sport in...?[edit]

How do you know baseball is the most popular sport in these cities? Chicago? That can't be true. The Super Fans cared about only two teams: Da Bears and Da Bulls. -Amit

Most popular claims are very unwise as they can be measured in any number of ways to suit the sport the writer wishes to promote as most popular. To give an extreme example, Red Bull New York are probably the most popular New York sports team on a global scale because they represent the city at soccer and there are more soccer fans globally than in the big four sports combined. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Captainbeecher (talkcontribs) 17:07, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Someone has to make a decision here[edit]

The New York Giants, the New York Jets, and the New York Islanders are no more "New York City" teams than the New Jersey Devils and the New Jersey Nets. If you want to include the Giants or the Jets in this article, it is wholly incomplete not to include the Nets and the Devils. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JHMM13 (talkcontribs) 03:48, 9 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Do they deserve a mention in the article and/or template? {{NewYorksports}} PaulC/T+ 16:38, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Buffalo Bills?! and No Islanders/Devils?[edit]

In the opening description (which I believe is WAY too long, there is mention of the Buffalo Bills being a New York City team.... no, they're not. And no mention of the Islanders or Devils? The Intro needs a SERIOUS re-write. Justin Tokke (talk) 03:21, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Major Sports[edit]

What is defined as a "Major Sport", because the the article mentions four major sports, followed by references to baseball, football, basketball, hockey, and soccer. (that's five) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.207.118.220 (talk) 02:33, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"The New York metropolitan area is the only one in the United States with more than one team in each of the four major professional sports leagues"[edit]

The table at U.S. cities with teams from four major league sports says that LA metro area also has more than one team in each league, since the Chargers returned there in January. (If you don't include the metro area, NYC doesn't have an NFL team.) 128.12.183.32 (talk) 03:02, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Teams that play outside of NYC limits[edit]

@DeFazioNJ: Giants, Jets, and Red Bulls count as New York teams because they have New York in their names. The Devils do not. SportsFan007 (talk) 16:58, 27 July 2018 (UTC)SportsFan007[reply]

@SportsFan007: The section in the article explicitly mentions teams that play within the New York Metropolitan Area. The New Jersey Devils fit this criteria. If what you're saying is true, then the Islanders shall also be removed from this map and list once they return to Nassau County, because the "New York" in their name is referring to the State of New York, as Nassau and Suffolk Counties do not constitute New York City. Additionally, every major New York-based news outlet considers the New Jersey Devils a local team and the New Jersey Devils' radio broadcasting rights are held by WFAN, which is licensed to New York City. The National Hockey League acknowledges the New York City CSA as being the only region which the Devils have broadcasting rights. This is all common knowledge to anyone familiar with the major professional sports scene and who lives in this area. It's extremely far-fetched that an article can stay the same way for over a decade and a user who lists the Golden Knights, Rangers, and Islanders as favorite teams can suddenly determine the consensus of New York City area sports fans and say that the edit was made with no personal bias. (User talk:DeFazioNJ) 17:43, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

- REDACTED -

Others are now weighing in on this. @Yosemiter: Common consensus largely seems to remain as follows:

The City of New York and its surrounding Metropolitan Area is home to eleven major professional sports teams across North America's five most prestigious sports leagues:

Yankees (MLB), Mets (MLB), Giants (NFL), Jets (NFL), Knicks (NBA), Nets (NBA), Rangers (NHL), Islanders (NHL), Devils (NHL), Red Bulls (MLS), New York City FC (MLS).

Each of these teams have a connection to the City of New York, including the New Jersey Devils, as theirs' is one defined by league broadcasting rules and territorial claims.

@DeFazioNJ: I changed the article title to Sports in the New York Metropolitan area so there isn’t any further confusion about the New Jersey Devils being listed. SportsFan007 (talk) 18:30, 27 July 2018 (UTC)SportsFan007[reply]

@SportsFan007: Brilliant. The accuracy of this cannot be in doubt moving forward. To better understand the scope of the sports culture in the NYC Metro, it's more helpful to delineate the entire region for readers rather than to restrict it to the Five Boroughs, especially when four (and soon five once the Islanders head back west) of the eleven major clubs play outside the City Limits.

Inclusion of New Jersey Devils[edit]

This article is entitled "Sports in the New York metropolitan area". As such, it does not matter that a team has "New Jersey" in its name instead of "New York". If the team is located in the New York Metropolitan Area, which Newark, NJ is most certainly a part of, it should be included in this article. Again, the team name is irrelevant because the city where the team is based, as well as the area where the majority of the team's fans come from, is in the New York Metropolitan Area. Con268 (talk) 23:32, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Correct. This should have been clarified/finalized by this point, as evidenced on other entries on this talk page. To reiterate; it is common knowledge in the NY/NJ/CT Tri-State area that the New Jersey Devils are treated by the New York-based sports media as a local franchise, and New Jersey Devils games carried on MSG Networks are not subject to blackout *anywhere* in Northern/Central New Jersey, the five boroughs of NYC, Long Island, and/or other Downstate NY counties. This is not a recent development, with Devils’ games being aired on channels branded as “SportsChannel New York” in the 1990s and “FSN New York” in the 2000s. Thank you for the edit. Worlds ‘Largest’ Marathon[edit]

Could the description of the NYC marathon as the worlds ‘largest’ be updated to make it more precise - perhaps the worlds busiest? I read that as the worlds largest, meaning longest, which obviously doesn’t make sense as all marathons are (pretty much) the same length. DocLovely (talk) 12:24, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why would you confuse largest with longest? The fact is, with over 50,000 runners, the size of the NYC Marathon field exceeds that of London, Paris, and Berlin which have approximately 48,000 runners. Cusack301 (talk) 06:56, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Soccer at the Top of the Major Sports List?[edit]

Why is Soccer at the Top of the Major Sports List? Sports should be presented in alphabetical order: Baseball Basketball "American" Football Ice Hocky Soccer

And since the term "American" Football is being used, does the term Soccer need adjustment? Cusack301 (talk) 07:46, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Sports in the New York metropolitan area's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Staten Island Cricket Club[edit]

The statement is that the Staten Island Cricket Club is the oldest continuously operated cricket club in the US. Yes, the Philadelphia Cricket Club is older, but like many cricket clubs they suspended the playing of cricket around 1920 for other sports such as golf and tennis. According to the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s website cricket play started again about 20 years ago, that means cricket play hasn’t been continuous. The statement about the Staten Island Cricket Club is correct, not dubious. Cusack301 (talk) 01:36, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Major professional sports team" section is just wrong[edit]

This section only lists the Yankees and Giants (NFL), then claims "four teams in the four major sports". This whole section should just be deleted. It was added on 18 December 2023. 2603:7000:3AF0:8450:20B6:63F4:3A31:7715 (talk) 01:27, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
