the propaganda speculation

The Nyan cat song is very similar to Aaron Coplands classical work Rodeo Hoedown The visual has starsnstripes as well as a chocolate flavored poptart that looks rather like the Japanese flag basically its kind of a magic practitioners remix of two national flags with an anthemlike song I urge people that are able to confirm this to describe the actual purpose of the video 163.41.136.51 (talk) 16:54, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Composer of song

Does anyone know the real name of the composer of the Nyan Cat song? It all seems rather vague, with different versions being uploaded at different times, usually under a pseudonym. Likewise, is there any reliable sourcing for the identity of daniwellP?--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:38, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Not sure, but the original song predates Nyan Cat. Here is an example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV3-LHcvRgA KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 07:27, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
The daniwell version is from July 2010, and nobody seems to have found a earlier version. The presumption is that daniwell is the composer and copyright holder of the song, but nobody seems to know his identity, other than that he is probably a Japanese national. It is remarkable that despite over 60 million views, the origins of the song remain obscure.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:05, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

The one and only enemy of the Nyan Cat is the Tacnayn, (pronounced Tac-9, or in his native tongue a complex series of clicks and shrill cries) his very name brings children to tears. Tacnayn's return heralds the end of reality as we know it; within the next year the seas will boil and skulls will rain down from blood-filled clouds. (Parents remember to keep your children indoors for the skull rain thing.) Every 22079460347 years Tacnayn's universe, the reverse-verse, merges with our own in a battle for reality supremacy! Donning the evil belgian-waffle armor Tacnayn cannot be harmed by our puny mortal weapons; only his arch-nemesis, NYAN CAT is powerful enough to tear through his golden, delicious hide. So, remember to keep your eye out for blood red clouds and boiling seas; just stay in those days and make yourself some hot-pockets.

nyan.cat

http://nyan.cat has been added before, but it fails WP:EL. It is an unofficial site with a lousy version of the cat. The only notable thing about it is the use of the .cat domain (Catalonia).--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:10, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

The prguitarman.com version is the original. Nyan Cat on Know Your Meme was removed as it did not say much that was not already in the article. Per WP:POPCULTURE, it is not practical to mention all of the different appearances in YouTube videos etc, as it would lead to the criticism in the drawing on the right. My personal choice that is not in the article is this paper model, which is very cleverly done.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:06, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

File:Nyancat200px.gif Nominated for speedy Deletion

An image used in this article, File:Nyancat200px.gif, has been nominated for speedy deletion for the following reason: Uploader unsure of copyright status

What should I do?

Don't panic; you should have time to contest the deletion (although please review deletion guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to provide a fair use rationale
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale, then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Deletion Review

Other versions

One of the things that the article does not mention and probably should is the proliferation of ethnic versions. This seems to have been sparked by the Mexican Nyan Cat♥, currently with over 3 million views. There are now Nyan Cats for virtually every nationality under the sun. Also worth a mention are Nyan Cat - Smooth Jazz Cover (4.5 million views), Nyan cat man and Nyan Cats Attack! (2 million views). The most viewed "alternative" version is probably The Annoying Orange doing Nyan Nya Orange (Nyan Cat SPOOF) (apparently riding Charlie the Unicorn, but this is not stated explicitly). This currently has 8 million views.

Nyan Cat has also acquired an arch enemy called Tacnayn (music and spelling in reverse). This character appears in the video game Nyan Cat: Lost in Space.

All of these are far more imaginative than the dreary http://nyan.cat/ , which is notable only for the unusual address (for Catalonia). Unfortunately there is not enough sourcing to mention these at the moment, but they should be considered for inclusion.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 11:58, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Copyright status of image

badmachine says at File talk:Nyan cat 250px frame.PNG: "When this was up for deletion, i emailed Chris Torres, the copyright holder of the animated .GIF. he said it was okay for me to post our communication, with the copyright number redacted, since it contains personal contact information. Mr. Torres has no problem with Wikipedia's use of the image. even though Ianmacm has fixed the issue by providing fair use rationale, i guess it couldn't hurt to post the email, since he said it's ok:

Re: Wikipedia wants to delete the nyan cat image... you could help retain it

The Nyan Cat is copyrighted by me, evidenced under registration number [REDACTED]. I'd be happy to let Wikipedia use the animated original in the Nyan Cat wiki page though. Is there anything I'd need to do or can this be permission enough?

While on the subject, if you could add in the article that www.nyancat.cat is the new official page for Nyan Cat that'd be great. Nyan.cat is indeed a plagiarized page, but I've personally worked on Nyancat.cat.

On Nov 27, 2011, at 10:10 PM, [REDACTED] wrote:

I replied asking whether it is cool to post this email, and he said yes, but to please redact the copyright number. I have also redacted my own name."

This is useful, as it clarifies the status of the image. The infobox uses a single frame, for the record, the animation consists of twelve different frames (screenshot in a GIF editor here). It is also notable that Chris Torres is annoyed by nyan.cat, as many people are coming across this in a Google search and thinking that it is the real deal when it is a lousy imitation. Torres now has his own .cat version at http://nyancat.cat/ , called Non-stop Nyan Cat, or "Interminable del Gat Nyan" which is needed to comply with the language rules of the .cat domain.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:30, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

it would be nice to have an infobox, so the official site won't be buried at the bottom of the page. -badmachine 20:31, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
There is now some confusion, because the GIF animation on Lol-Comics was considered to be the "official" version. The nyancat.cat website seems to be a response to nyan.cat, which has not pleased Chris Torres.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 20:40, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Heroes of Newerth

This is a skin for a game, and does not really add to an understanding of the cat. It is a WP:POPCULTURE mention, and it is not possible to mention all of the games and apps with the cat. The source does not say much about the cat, other than it is "an alternate skin for the in-game courier". This would be worth a brief mention in the article Heroes of Newerth.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:02, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Pop Tart flavour

Since there is a bit of confusion online with some people thinking Nyan cat is a strawberry flavour Pop Tart, I think it should be stated clearly in the article that the flavour is cherry. This can be the reference: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/nyan-cat-pop-tart-cat

But comparing the cat colours to the Pop Tart colours it is also clear that the flavour is cherry and not strawberry flavour or wild strawberry (because then the dots should have been blue): http://www.poptarts.com/Cherry.aspx#/9 http://www.poptarts.com/Strawberry.aspx#/22 http://www.poptarts.com/WildliciousWildStrawberry.aspx#/36 89.130.25.222 (talk) 16:16, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

When Chris Torres created the cat, it was named as Pop Tart Cat, but without a flavour. Pop-Tarts (plural with a hyphen) has been registered as a trademark by the Kellogg Company since 1965 [2], and "Pop-Tart" (singular) was registered in October 2011.[3] So far, Kellogg does not seem to have complained about what appears to be an Internet meme based on one of its products. Assuming that the cat is indeed a Kellogg Pop-Tart, it would probably be cherry because of the light pink base and darker pink frosting. [4] However, in the interview about how the cat was created [5] Torres does not go into specifics about the flavour, so there is an element of WP:OR in saying that it is cherry.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:54, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Japanese word

This part "The Japanese word for the sound cats make, "nyā" (にゃあ?)" This really should be -> nya = にゃ ie without the ending あ If you check the respected dictionary at http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1C Search for にゃ you will see that にゃあ is merely an "alternative" and that にゃ is the main entry.

To back this up you could also simply search for にゃ & にゃあ and notice that the first is much more indicative of the cat sound. Perhaps even more relevant to this article, is if you look at the original video (which I can't find now sorry, I'm sure it's here somewhere) the word にゃ is thrown all over the screen, not にゃあ Spurrymoses (talkcontribs) 12:26, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

The original version of the song by daniwell was uploaded to Nico Nico Douga on 25 July 2010.[6] In the notes accompanying the video, daniwell says "ミクが歌ってないように聞こえるかもしれませんが、実際は終始にゃにゃ歌っております" - "It might not sound like Miku, but the singing is actually nya nya (にゃにゃ) throughout the song." The English word can be meow or miaow, although the first is the most common. Since daniwell used にゃ in the song description, the article has been changed to reflect this.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 13:19, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Sexual Harassment Panda was first aired in July 1999. Unfortunately I can't watch the full episode, only a clip on YouTube. This is original research though, as nobody else seems to have spotted the similarity.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 15:40, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
That is why it's in here and not on the main page. But it does mean it's actually a derivative and therefore "animals flying in space with a rainbow trail" is allowed, or the copyright lies with Matt Stone or Trey Parker.
Similarity is not necessarily the same thing as copyright infringement. If you could upload a screenshot of the similar-looking panda leaflet to imgur.com and post the link here, it would be helpful.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:50, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Android 4.0 Easter Egg?

Android 4.0 has an Easter egg in it where when the "Android Version" under "About" in settings is tapped repeatedly, a Nyan cat-inspired video is displayed. 65.71.168.8 (talk) 00:55, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

This was first noticed in November 2011, and there is a YouTube video of how to find it here. It is not the cat itself, but a flying version of the Android logo. Not much sourcing on this, and although interesting, not really notable enough per WP:POPCULTURE.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:40, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
This is mentioned in List_of_Google_hoaxes_and_easter_eggs#Android. It is more on topic there.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:13, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Animated GIF

I think the animated GIF should be added to the article. What does everyone else think? Nithiya05 (talk) 21:25, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

It was in the article at one stage, but it was deleted in August 2011 on the grounds that it was the full work, and therefore failed WP:NFCC. The screenshot of one of the frames is within fair use guidelines.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:08, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

"saraj00n" is now known as "SARA JUNE".

I'm not sure when but the YouTube channel "saraj00n" is now known as "SARA JUNE". Mullafacation (talk) 07:44, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

You're right.[11] It's unclear when the change took place, but the account was called "saraj00n" at the time of the upload that made the video famous.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 12:05, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Body or torso?

Re this edit: yes, I'm aware of this, but still think that body is clearer for the average reader. We are not doing a biology lesson about a cartoon cat.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:49, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Change "The video merged a Japanese pop song sung by Hatsune Miku with an animated ..." to "The video merged a Japanese pop song with vocals by Momone Momo with an animated ..." The original song was written with Miku, but the Nyan Cat video itself uses a cover with Momo (more info in this wiki page itself) 18atcskd2w (talk) 00:04, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

I removed the Hatsune Miku part from the WP:LEAD because it is misleading. The original 2010 version of the song has vocals by the Hatsune Miku software, but the 2011 version used in the cat video is different and has vocals by Momone Momo. The name Momone Momo is based on the Japanese word for peach [12], but it got removed from the article because someone said it was trivia.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:34, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

New Name of Hosting YouTube Channel

The original owner of the YouTube channel which hosted the video has given the account to a new group of people, who have changed the name to Means TV [1]

I am unsure of the relevance of this change to the article, but someone had added a new section on the talk page after a prior change in channel name. AntiImperialPlanetologist (talk) 03:12, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. The video "Nyan Cat [original]" was uploaded on April 5, 2011 and is now showing MEANS TV as the channel owner instead of saraj00n. According to the source, this occurred in March 2019.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 04:51, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Wrong creator.

The original Nyannyannyannyannyan! song s by Momone Momo, an UTAUloid, not Hatsune Miku, the Vocaloid. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPXrLLDae2U — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hellohumans6669 (talkcontribs) 17:13, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

It looks like some of the YouTube videos have got this wrong. The original July 2010 version is here with vocals by Hatsune Miku. The music is the same but the vocals are substantially different from the January 2011 Momomomo version.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:41, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

Given that the Nyan Cat document even has a dedicated section discussing the Animated GIF, I find it surprising that those who visit the page are greeted by a still image of this famous viral meme.

I suggest replacing the current image of Nyan Cat with the animated version, which can be found at the following url: https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/114/779/0002.gif?1303045612 184.54.167.73 (talk) 00:30, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
