@Lohphat: There's a disclaimer at the top of that page stating "This is just a prototype of tag-based navigation on Wikipedia. Visit Wikipedia for the online encyclopedia." It seems to be only one article (from 28 April 2009) with no way to navigate to another article. GoingBatty (talk) 02:05, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Moving a Draft page

ItsL2Mx, If you believe that a draft you did not create is ready for submission and has no issues, you may submit it to AFC. It's not typical, but not against the rules, either. As for moving it into mainspace, that would depend on your level of experience. It is always wise to notify the creator of your intentions, in case they want to give you some input.

As I note that you have 9 edits over one day, you definitely lack the experience to be WP:autoconfirmed and make the move. What other Wikipedia history do you have? Please read WP:AFC and Wikipedia:Drafts#Publishing_a_draft--Quisqualis (talk) 04:44, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

(edit conflict) @ItsL2Mx: As with most things in life, it depends on the details. For example, if you moved Draft:Jithu s to Draft:Jithu S to fix the capitalization, that would probably be fine. However, if you moved Draft:Jithu s to articlespace, that would be inappropriate because the draft has no references. Fair Use Image Request

Well... I just would like to use image on Disaster Girl, so I clicked "Make a new request" button in Wikipedia:Files for upload page, but it is linked Wikipedia:Files for upload/Wizard, not shows request form. @Reiro: no new upload is needed: the file is already available, so just use it. No additional justification is needed on the file's description page in this case, since the proposed use in the Disaster Girl article is already mentioned. If you wish to use it a different article, you will need to edit the file's description page to add a separate justification: do this using the edit tabs on the description page, just as you would on any page. I can view the deleted version. The OP basically copied the lead paragraph of that article into this section. So yes, it's the same person. "Committed Suicide" vs. "Died by Suicide"

I believe that I saw that there was a policy in favor of "Died by Suicide" over "Committed Suicide" but I can't find it. Help?Naraht (talk) 13:34, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Wolfmanmos If you don't have the time or inclination to learn how to edit, then just add a section to the article's talk page to request that somebody else make the edit. Karan, to upload a new photo, you will need to get the copyright holder (usually the photographer, not you) to release it under a free license. User-provided translations of foreign terms

One of the current WP:DYK items caught my eye:

• ..... that Turkish champion Esra Yıldız, who was named the "Most Hyped Boxer", has been selected to represent Turkey at the 2020 Summer Olympics?

"Most Hyped Boxer" sounded like a very strange name for an award. In fact, the citation in the article is in Turkish, and "Most Hyped Boxer" is presumably tr-n / en-3 User:CeeGee's own translation of the Turkish term en dövüşken sporcu. Now of course these sorts of user-translated glosses appear frequently in Wikipedia, so that's presumably not a problem in and of itself. But, while I don't speak Turkish and thus can't comment on the accuracy, no one else seems to have translated it that way and to my ear (no offense intended!) it just doesn't sound like a tonally-appropriate English translation for an official award name.

So my question is - are there any guidelines on this? Are there any situations where a Wikipedian-provided translation ISN'T appropriate (I could imagine this being the sort of area where the Main Page might have a higher standard)? If you do come across one of these translations and think it seems "off," but can't actually confirm that or improve it yourself because you don't speak the relevant language, where and how would be good to bring it up? Korean names

Hello! Could someone tell me what the title should be for a draft on Seung Woo Back? And perhaps how to mention the family name in the article? IP user quickly reverts bots

I found [a peculiar IP user] who has in several instances, albeit spaced out by several months, reverted a few bot edits adding Internet Archive links. I [reverted one] on an article I have edited in the past and that needed Archive links (the new ones just redirect to a homepage). This IP hasn't been warned before, so I don't know that it's ready to be reported to WP:AIV yet, but if the IP is making changes to bots this fast I don't know if warnings are needed, or how to word a warning if so. I want to display language selector on the personal toolbar like Commons and Meta

Language Selector on Wikimedia Commons

Hello. I've seen a language selector on the left-hand side of my personal toolbar on Commons and Meta. So I want to display it in the same position, in the same function, and in the same view as these two wikis. But I couldn't find the code that makes it display(maybe the code is JavaScript code...?). @TKsdik8900: Commons and Meta have multiple languages in the same wiki, meaning both user interface and some of the content by editors is translated. Compare for example https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clementines_(01014)s.jpg?uselang=de and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clementines_(01014)s.jpg?uselang=en. I don't know whether there is a way to get a language selector on every page in a single-language wiki like the English Wikipedia where it would only affect the user interface. Manually adding ?uselang= or &uselang= to the url is easier than changing preferences if you only want to see the current page with another interface language and you know the language code. Monegasque / Monégasque

There are some article titles with the spelling "Monégasque" (here) and some with the spelling "Monegasque" (without the diacritic) (here). All categories use the latter spelling (here). Both spellings are in general use, but the article on the Monégasque language consistently uses the diacritic. In such a case, is it desirable to make the spelling consistent across titles by moving pages, or would that cause more harm than good? I couldn't find any guidance on this at MOS:SPELLING because it deals only with national varieties of English, which isn't what this is. Joriki (talk) 09:49, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

@Joriki: - I'm in favour of using diacritics. We have the technology nowadays so we should use it. I don't see how correcting Monegasque to Monégasque can be seen as unconstructive as long as its in the body of an article and not in a direct quote or reference. Might be worth posting at the talk page of the relevant WikiProject (WP:MICROSTATE) to see what the feeling is about moving articles from a non-diacritic title to one with a diacritic. @Joriki: I would recommend a discussion as there are a lot of articles and categories and suggest WP:EUROPE as the WP:MICROSTATE talk page seems to be in active. A question about reliable sources

Hello! I have a question about the article https://www.scholarship.edu.vn/trungquoc/wiki/en/Draft:RATESDOTCA. I would be very grateful if you could help me. The article was sent back for revision due to inappropriate links. Quote: "This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article-that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject."

I have read a lot of information, but please help me understand: 1) How can I tell if the site I'm referring to is appropriate? There are paid services to check the rating of sites - will this check be reliable in this case? Or is there some other way to tell if I can link to a certain site? 2) A question about the definition of "reliable source". It says here (https://www.scholarship.edu.vn/trungquoc/wiki/en/Wikipedia:Verifiability#Reliable_sources) states that this can be the material itself (an article or a book). But how exactly do I know that it is reliable?

You can choose to view the English Wikipedia there or here. I don't know what "paid services" you are referring to. Fajembola Wikipedia is not a place for people to tell the world about themselves. A Wikipedia article about you would need to summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about you, showing how you meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable person. Most people have great difficulty with doing that about themselves. It is strongly discouraged, though not forbidden. Hi EponineBunnyKickQueen. According to WP:MOVE, more specifically the "How to move a category" section, only editors with a special permission are allowed to move categories. To expand a bit on what Hoary said, Kelisakulm, a Wikipedia article (not just a "page" should be a neutral summary of what sources unconnected with the subject have published about them. Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. THe sentence Hoary quoted doesn't belong in any encyclopaedia. Please read WP:42, WP:NBIO and, if you think that Klink meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, WP:YFA. Please see the link above for an article on the use of the word 'kaffir' which to certain groups is a racial slur. Please see the Wikipedia page titled 'kaffir limes'. This editor added a link on the 'kaffir lime' page to the above article and one sentence stating that the word was a racial slur. It was promptly removed with the reason that the page was a "botanical page". For future reference, which racial slurs are allowed on botanical pages and which are not? Pro Wordsmiths -- Scam??

Hello Wiki Team --

Our small company has been working with a company called Pro Wordsmiths that promises to create and submit a Wikipedia page for our brand. It was a couple of thousand dollars and it has now been over a year with very little communication from them. Has anyone else had this experience or have further information?

I don't know anything about the specific company, but please be aware that Wikipedia does not endorse any organizations promising to create articles for pay, and our experience is that a significant proportion of them are scams. This company does advertise Wikipedia services on their website [[4]]. I checked the COI noticeboard and there's no record of them. I can't recall if I've ever seen any disclosures from anyone claiming to be from them, so they may very likely be doing UPE. I looked them up on LinkedIn and there are no people associated with their company page, and the address and phone number there doesn't match the one on their web site. Many flags. @BobWilliams1979: Sorry you were scammed by them. You can report them on Trustpilot to protect others in the future. Also, if you don't tell us your company name, we're limited in how much we can advise you about your chances for having an article approved, and more importantly, we won't be able to block this scammer in the future. Nonetheless, if you enter your company name in the "Search Wikipedia" box above and then click on the red link that appears at the top of the search results, you can see the deletion history (if indeed they ever actually did create an article for you). Bro! You were scammed. Think about it. You paid a company for a Wikipedia article then they ghosted you. That’s the first flag. The second is that with basic research you would have figured out that the best way to get an article on here is naturally based on being notable and numerous sources based on your business history.

Having a Wikipedia article doesn’t always work in your favour either. If something negative happened with your business and it’s notable it will be added to the article as well which could have negative effects.

Image help

Hi my fellow editors :D...

So last night, I uploaded a new cropped version of the 2012 image of Bakir Izetbegović from this to this. Now, it seems that it's a bit broken haha. When I, for example, open that newly cropped image on the 2014 Bosnian general election article, it looks completely normal, but when I go to his own article, it goes back to the old image, the first one, plus the old image looks elongated and not in "HD" quality. But when I click on that "old" image to open it fully, it goes back to my new, normal looking, cropped version of it. However, when I'm on my mobile phone, the new cropped version of the image looks comepletely normal no matter what article I go on. You can even look in the image's File history on Commons that I had changed it a lot because of this problem. Can somebody please look a bit into this? Bakir123 (talk) 19:17, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Organization of the 'What links here' page

@Mr. Guye: They're sorted by page ID, which is a sequential number assigned to the page when they are created. Why does the start of the list appear to be alphabetical? How should I structure a nested cite?

I am developing an article that makes multiple references to a number of books. I have therefore listed the books at the end of the article thus (Source B):

and use {{sfn}} to refer to various pages as required. On one page is a quote from a journal to which I do not have access. Since it is a good book, it has a reference to the original article (though without the title) from which I can construct a reference (Source A):

However, since I have not seen the journal, the advice in Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Say where you read it is to state 'Source A cited in Source B'. If I try to do this in my reference section, I get a duplicate error for Source B, as it also exists as a source on its own. If I say 'Source A cited in {{sfn|Griffiths||p=107}}', I get a little number for Source B, and a new set of references at the bottom of the article (under the categories and everything).

@Verbarson:, not sure if User:Mjroots is necessarily correct. He's not wrong either, I don't believe there is a rule written down, so do what you think best. For my part, I figure that if the reader wants to verify that the material is correct, she might well want to go to directly to the source of the material, for any of a number of reasons. I personally just combine the two sources with "cited at", like this (bolded here just for ease of finding):

llghtchlld Spelling (help)

My name is Alex, and I am llghtchlld's assistant, and also the person who created the page for llghtchlld. (I hope I'm posting in the correct place for the help desk this time!)

I was wondering if it was possible to change the main title of llghtchlld's Wikipedia page to the correct spelling. (with the i's as l's) This spelling of the i's replaced with l's is not a stylization, it is the actual spelling of llghtchlld's name, and it is the way that her name is spelled throughout her online presence. The purpose of this was to be distinct from other artists with the name "Lightchild".

I know that Wikipedia has very strict policies when it comes to spelling and formatting, but please let me know if it is possible to make this spelling correction, and avoid confusion surrounding her name online.

Hi User:Loveisthevision. No it's probably not possible, but you can try if you want, and you never know, I could be wrong. The procedure for this is to go to Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting a single page move (we call renaming a "move" here) and follow the instructions.

Pretty sure your request won't be accepted. I'm not sure that it isn't a stylization. "llghtchlld" looks like an affectation to me, and isn't formed as English words (and names) are, and is thus unpronounceable. Even Welsh words that start with a double-L have a vowel right after. If it's still pronounced "lightchild" them I'm pretty sure it's a stylization. It also starts with a lower-case letter which we don't do except in special cases, at least for article titles.

Yes for bell hooks and eBay etc we make exceptions. Because those entities are famous, thus their name appears in many sources, which mostly use their stylizations, thus the reader will expect that.

For less famous sources, not so much. IMDb does have "llgtchild" but Deadline has "Lightchild". Some people use a stylization that a fair amount of sources don't follow, so we don't either. Article names should be the form of the subject's name that's most usual in English-language sources. The wishes of the subject are irrelevant. Of the four sources cited in the article, the first use both versions, the second uses neither, the third and fourth both use "Lightchild". So "Lightchild" is the appropriate name for the article. You got scammed. Wikipedia does not "offer" any "opportunities" to anyone. Whoever made you that offer is either illegitimately taking advantage of Wikipedia, or just blatantly lying to you. If any article gets created, it will not belong to you and you will not have any control over it. Most likely the article will soon get deleted. I have no personal interest in this topic, but I wonder if appointment to the Senior Executive Service (United States) is in itself sufficient to confer notability? If so, someone (not the subject, preferably, and not me) could create a valid article and wikilink it to the Rice list.

For the benefit of Charles W Taylor Jr, we should explain that we do not accept or require copies of Primary documents such as certificates to verify such matters; what we would require is a published, independent secondary reliable source (such as mention in a Government journal or similar) of the appointment. It's helpful if such sources are online, but not essential – so long as they can be consulted in, say, a good library, citation of their bibliographical details are sufficient.

Problem

Is it possible to remove an article, that was created by me, but accidently wasn't since it was created by someone else. What happened is when I've added the tags unsourced and orphan to the article Warriors of Mahabharata, an editor nominated the article for speedy deletion and send the article was nominated for speedy deletion in my talk page in this message User talk:MoviesandTelevisionFan#Speedy deletion nomination of Warriors of ahabharata. What I saw in the article, it said it was created by me, when I've added the tags. It happened when I've added the tags and a editor moved the article to draft, at the same time [5], could be seen in this log. Then, a system flagged me that I recreated the article. Article Edit?

Dear Wikipedia, I am not good with computers/Internet. I’m at Wikipedia article NNS Thunder (F90) - Wikipedia. It’s the Wikipedia USCGC Chase page/article. (For clarity, the US Coast Guard Cutter Chase was transferred to the Nigerian Navy in 2011 as the “NNS Thunder” and that’s the name of the ship that comes up when you go to the USCGC Chase Wikipedia article.) I was a crewmember in the 1970s. On this Wikipedia page/article, in the ship’s “history” section for the 1970’s, there is an omission/discrepancy from the official US Coast Guard USCGC Chase history from which it seems most of the Wikipedia article is taken from.

The existing Wikipedia paragraph of concern is the 4th paragraph down from the heading that reads “Vietnam and the 1970s” which reads; “Between 1974 and 1978, Chase continued to patrol the waters of the Atlantic. Chase visited Spain, Morocco, Ireland, and France.”

But, on the official Coast Guard website ship’s history page, under the heading “Cutter History”…4th paragraph down), i.e. Chase, 1968 (WHEC 718) > United States Coast Guard > All (uscg.mil)……..http:www.history.uscg.mil/Browse-by-Topic/Assets/Water/All/Article/2090238/chase-1968-whec-718/. That equivalent US Coast Guard 4th paragraph reads:

@Bknp1: Thank you very much for pointing out these discrepancies. We are all volunteers, and the help desk denizens may not be the best folks to correct the article. I suggest that you try to edit the article yourself. Yes, I know it's scary, but be bold (WP:BOLD). If you mess it up, the worst that can happen is that you will be reverted. You have just as much responsibility and authority for that article as the rest of us. Just do it!
