Bullock

Hi Jenny. I've taken Bullock out again - he's resigning, not retiring (his seat is not up for election this cycle anyway, unless there's a double dissolution). Once the Bullock -> Dodson changeover is effected (as far as I know Bullock hasn't submitted his resignation yet), which should be before the election, there'll just be a little swap down in the Senate tables where the continuing senators are listed. :) Frickeg (talk) 11:41, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

2016 in Australia

Thanks for your kind words! In general, I usually only add items with an article link, whether it is to an article about the event, or to people or organisations involved. But it's not a strict rule, anything with a lot of coverage should be fine, and may prompt creation of an article. With anniversaries of events, I would probably not include them unless the anniversary itself had an article (such as Australian Bicentenary), just because it is fairly subjective about which anniversaries to include and of course the original event should be in the year article when it happened anyway so it's kind of repeating the information. --Canley (talk) 05:01, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Old edits

Try using the "undo" button first, but it will most likely fail if the edits are old and there have been subsequent edits to that section. If it doesn't work, just edit it back to the original state. --Canley (talk) 08:48, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Orange Sky Laundry - editing user space draft

As a general rule of thumb I don't edit other people's user-space drafts without invitation - I'll wait until it gets moved to article space, as I'm sure User:JennyOz/sandbox/Draft1 will. However if you want me to start on some of the basics (eg WP:SURNAME or WP:NEUTRAL, per my comments on User talk:JennyOz/sandbox/Draft1) while it's still in your user-space, let me know. Hi, Jenny! Sorry to be out of the loop on this (tied up with some other stuff in real life), but great work! I really think you can move this article into main space (if you need help to do this let me know). Once that happens, you can expect other people will start to modify it but that's OK. They would not do it if they didn't think the article useful and collectively people know about the various policies (I don't think any one human could possibly know them all - I am sure I don't). Coords

Hi, Jenny! I saw your comment to Scott Davis and just thought I'd give you the short intro to coords.

If you are looking at an article which is using the infobox Australian place (as Cowra and most Australian places do), then you can added the coords either as Degrees Minutes Seconds like this

| latd = 33 | latm = 50 | lats = 6 | longd = 148 | longm = 41 | longs = 33

Or if you have decimal degrees

| latd =33.835 | longd = 148.6925

There are plenty of websites that will convert between DMS and decimal degrees if you want to do that, but the infobox supports either format.

In the Australian place infobox, it is ASSUMED you are talking about a latitude that is South of the Equator and East of Greenwich (because all Australia is in the SE of the world), so there is no need for negatives. In other parts of Wikipedia and on Commons, you would put -33 or -33.835 to signify south of the equator.

If you want to know what are the coords of an Australian placename, then this is your best place to go : Gazetteer of Australia.

Ah thanks @Kerry Raymond: - when I'd had a quick look and compared the coords on maps with those on Cowra, it was the minus sign that confused me so you have just cleared that up for me. Certainly hadn't occurred to me that the infobox had an inbuilt assumption. It takes me so long to look up and fully comprehend each new procedure so your help is very welcome. Maybe a copy-editor?

Hello, again, JennyOz – I hadn't run across your user name before, so out of curiosity looked at your user page. I also don't like getting in to arguments, so avoid them whenever possible. It looks like you have an attention to detail, so you might like to participate at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors. You could help cut down on our backlog of articles needing copy-editing. Some of the articles are in pretty good shape, and only need polishing. Others are in bad shape, or written by a non-native speaker of English, and require a lot of work. Normally, it is not contentious editing, and there's no rush; you don't have to finish an article all on one day. If you're curious, you can look at articles that have been copy-edited already and see in the revision history what the copy-editor did. Look in the archives. I'm sure each copy-editor has his or her own style of copy-editing and what he/she considers important enough to change. If you're really interested in beginning, you might like to look at the tools I've placed at the top of my talk page. Feel free to copy (in edit mode) and paste to your page any that seem useful. (Be sure to click "Cancel" to get out of edit mode.) If you're interested in Australian topics, you might look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia. G'day The Rambling Man, funny you should ask. I spent the weekend swapping between Ian's women's fifer list and, when it was sending me cross-eyed, Ellyse's article. (She is such a magic person. Her interview discussing how she accidentally celebrated her double century on field a tad early was simply delightful.) I only did gnomey edits and only got down to the beginning of her football section. Yep I'm in. There is a massive amount of prose from earlier in her cricket days. Let me know the plan. Great, once I get clear of my sandboxing for the Segrave Trophy, I'll take a closer look at Perry and see what's happening. With regard to the Laureus lists, well I have six more up my sleeve just waiting for the FLC backlog to clear, plus the main article is now re-worked completely at at GAN waiting for a kind editor to pluck it from obscurity and review it. The lists are: Breakthrough, Sportsman, Sport for Good, Comeback, Team and Spirit of Sport. I'd be happy to take any comments on their respective talkpages should you feel so generously inclined! Hi Pendright, well that's weird. When I view this sentence "Although joint training with the Navy proved satisfactory, it did not engender the Marine esprit de corps that was expected.", esprit de corps appears in italics, and in this, "The slogan Free a Marine to Fight proved to be a strong drawing card for the Reserve...", Free a Marine to Fight is italicised. Just so it is clear, my edit summaries are not about you or your edits (which are clearly improvements). I was and am peeved that I made edits in several sections and then got an edit conflict and, as an IP editor, lost all the changes I'd made and was presented only with your last saved version so could not cut-and-paste my changes in. It's a fault in the software.

Hi Jenny... to be clear, I did get an edit conflict alert, but all it displayed was your latest saved version, so unlike a usual edit conflict, it did not display what I had done and allow me to integrate the changes. Of course, there is no way that you could have known I was working on any changes. I have no idea if this was a software glitch or a design fault that produces edit conflict notices to IP users that are utterly useless for actually retaining changes from both editors. Trove citations

Thanks for spotting the dodgy Trove citations, I have fixed the references to The News. I remembered reading a discussion between some Wikipedians and the NLA about this (newspaper names and links in the automatic citations), I think it was this post and this post on the Trove forum? I remember they did roll out some fixes a few years back, it may have been to do with these discussions. @JennyOz: If you care to offer it, I’d like your opinionh on a grammar situation that has troubled me from time to time. According to Hoyle (American), adding “ing” to the ending of a verb changes both the meaning and the function of the verb. In some cases, it causes the verb to act as a noun or adjective, and in others, it changes the tense of the verb. So,If the word explained is changed to explaining, did a past tense verb become a present tense something else? The more research I do, the more circular it becomes. Anyway, I hope you are well! Hello Pendright!, Lovely to hear from you. Crikey! The more I think about your question, the more I am thinking it needs a good thinking! Here are some examples where meaning can change with "ing". He is cooking (present tense verb) or he has a cooking room. Cooking has become an adjective because the room isn't cooking. He is running (verb) in the election but he is in the running (noun). Saying is a verb, or a noun as in 'a common saying'. You are wiring the house - but it becomes the wiring (noun). I am building (verb) something - but a building is a noun. He was drumming (verb) or he got a good drumming (noun) from the boss or even he went to his sound-proofed drumming (adjective) room. We are sailing, that is a sailing boat.

But with explained/explaining... I suppose one could say "that was a good explaining" but we have the noun explanation. Maybe, "that is a good book if you need some explaining". In that sentence is explaining a noun? We need context - want to give me a sample sentence where 'explaining' could be a problem? I'll look forward to finding the answer with you. Hi Pendright, nice to hear from you! Yes I'm quite well thanks, hope you are too. Well, as an Aussie, I use our styles though they are usually close to British. There are many guides listed at style guide but each can have some different "rules" and only confuse anyone trying to find a definitive answer. Even with our own MoS house style guide, you'll find editors debating fine points. I tend to google when I have a style query and read a few sites to gauge best use.

I'm not the right person to opine on precise rules but most importantly to me, the style will depend on the subject area and concision. I just go with what "sounds" best and I'm happy if somebody tweaks what I've written. I think we should always write with the reader in mind, not grammar pedantry.

As for "which"..., some might say "always" but it depends on clauses and length of the sentence. For example, in "Apples are a fruit which grow on trees." I wouldn't use a comma because it's a short sentence that doesn't need extra punctuation to help with understanding it. For a longer sentence like "Apples, which can be green or red, grow on trees.", the comma breaks it up for the reader. (I read an article recently with a sentence so long and with so much punctuation, including multiple commas, colons and semicolons, I had to read it about three times to understand it. It would have been far better for readers if broken into a few shorter sentences. That punctuation was probably "correct" but our purpose is for readers to learn something or to quickly find what they're looking for, not to show the ability to weave a paragraph into a complex single sentence.)

I am also aware that some things I was taught aren't necessarily right. We all had a Miss Snodgrass!

Don't be too concerned. If you're working on another fine FAC, the reviewers there will suggest or tweak any punctuation that really matters.

@JennyOz: Thank you so much for sharing your common sense approach to Wikipedia article writing. British English does have its variety of style guides. American English has a few style guides as well, but the Chicago Manual of Style is probably the most generally accepted choice for general writing. Even (so-called) generally accepted rules are open to interpretation and they often are. I guess that’s why they call writing an art.

I’ve been working on an article that was promoted to GA in 2015, with the expectation of nominating it for ACR. When I’m done, do you think you might have time to take a look?

Yep Pendright, I'm familiar with Chicago MoS and its authority in the US. I'd reckon that across all English language MoSs, whether universities, media houses or even commercial organisations, they probably agree 90+% on grammar "rules".

Georg(e) Forster

Thank you for having a look at A Voyage Round the World before it will hit the Main Page! However, I am not sure whether I should agree with this edit: all of these books cite him as "George Forster" (and so does the original title page). On the other hand, while GF was known as George while in England, most of the literature about him uses the German form "Georg Forster", including the only English-language biography (by Thomas P. Saine) and the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The Royal Society uses George. I think there's a case to be made for harmonising all appearances of the name, but I would prefer to use the names as used in each of the publications (which then means using both Georg and George). One of these days I'll try to write something useful about this and add it to Georg Forster, but I haven't quite decided what to do... Hi Kusma, Thanks for your message (and for the article). I agree and have undone the last of my changes. My confusion stemmed from Gbooks and WorldCat both using the "Georg" spelling in their entry text, though their images of the Title Page and book cover of course show George. (A trap I'll be aware of in future!) I'm not sure harmonising is better than a simple note explaining the two spellings? BTW, the Liebersohn article (currently ref 20) at Common-Place - when I attempted to check its spelling the URL did not resolve but I found it here. I was not sure whether to change the URL. Hi Jenny, that sounds pretty rough. You are a star! I foolishly entered the WikiCup, and the final round starts soon - assuming that I get through. My competitive spirit is seriously kicking in! I won't enter again, but right now I am hooked. I completely understand that your technical issues may reoccur, so I shall treat anything you can do as a wonderful bonus. My suggestion would be just write all and any suggestions straight into the article. There are few enough of your ideas that I ever wish to challenge, and if I do we can discuss on the talk page or I can just BRD revert! I would like to nominate Editor JennyOz. They are in many ways the epitome of a Wikignome: inserting useful grammar corrections and MoS compliances in a helpful and almost ridiculously modest way. They also do a fair bit of assessing, at all levels. It can be embarrassing to have them point out the basic errors in your FAC, but this is more than compensated by the knowledge that after JennyOz has visited, whatever the article's other flaws, no one is going to pick at the grammar. I have taken to leaving a saucer of milk out by my articles, in the hope of attracting their attention. Numerous other highly experienced editors regularly ask JennyOz to check over their articles. I think that an EotW award would be an appropriate reward for years of putting that final sparkle on Wikipedia's best articles.
