Editor [[User:Chris the speller]] submitted the following nomination for [[WP:Editor of the Week|Editor of the Week]]:

I nominate User GoingBatty for his 1/4 million edits and another 3/4 million edits through BattyBot, which uses Auto Wiki Browser to make automated edits. GoingBatty uses an impressive number of tools to fix WP articles: AWB, HotCat, WPCleaner and many others. He is one of the chief architects of the "Typo rules" that AWB uses. This results in additional hundreds of thousands of corrections being made by other users of AWB. He has qualified for the Disambiguator Hall of Fame multiple times. Editors who have problems or questions with AWB or its various Typo rules often have them resolved by GoingBatty before other editors can respond. He is often the calm voice of reason when a discussion starts to heat up. Few editors have his combination of kind, helpful attitude and incomparable technical skills. This nomination was supported and seconded by [[User: Go Phightins!]], and [[User:Jim Carter]].
You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Some questions

I don't know what to do with these questions so I thought I just drop 'em here, maybe you know what to do.

  1. Suresh_Prasad_Sarbadhikari#Career_Highlights says: "whose body had been poisoned by the tiger's nails". The nails of felines aren't poisonous, right? Maybe they mean that the wounds became infected or even necrotic?
  2. Khojali_Osman: "in which he appeared perfectly sane, whilst he had also carried the traits of not a mad man, but of a reasonably sane extremist." Is it even possible to be a "sane extremist"?
  3. Australian_Army_Intelligence_Corps: "The corps currently consists of 169 officers and 232 other ranks". Seems unlikely. Do they mean 232 people with other ranks?
  4. Claudio Camaso: "He committed suicide after accidentally killing a man.". I am unable to read Italian. According to IMDb (which is not a reliable source) he stabbed that dude during what is described as a quarrel or brawl and evaded the police for the next ten days. To me, "accidentally killing a man" sounds like a traffic accident, stabbing someone during a brawl isn't an accident, even if the intention wasn't to kill him.
  5. What to do with messages like this one?
  6. is suicide by shoot the same thing as suicide with a gun? According to Google Translating the ru wiki article says: "December 12, 1938 EI Goryachev died, but there is a version of suicide[2] because of fear of reprisals. [3][4]"

The Quixotic Potato (talk) 15:19, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@The Quixotic Potato: I numbered your questions to make it easier to answer.
  1. Your guess may be right, but the source doesn't make this clear. I suggest you post on Talk:Suresh Prasad Sarbadhikari and ask for assistance. If that's not successful, you may want to add {{clarify}} after that statement.
  2. I would guess that insanity and extremism are different, but it would really help to have a source for this. Again, posting on the article talk page should be your first step.
  3. You're probably right, but the article uses the same wording as the source. I changed the article to have that statement in quotes. Maybe you could find a more recent source, or ask on the talk page for assistance.
  4. I can't read Italian either. Again, asking for clarification on the talk page is my suggestion.
  5. Messages like that belong on the talk page, so people can discuss it and decide how to change the article. I reverted the edit.
  6. Probably, but we should write what the sources say. Again, I suggest you try the talk page.
Good luck, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 23:17, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@The Quixotic Potato: Not sure what you thought was "weird" about the cite web templates. Maybe the fact that they weren't showing up in the References section because the <ref>...</ref> tags were missing. I did some cleanup, but more is needed. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 23:37, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, all extremists are insane (by definition), but not all insane people are extremists. Thanks for fixing the Vicki Hendricks article. I've added the rest of em to my todo list. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 01:22, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@The Quixotic Potato: Not sure that the definition of extremists mentions insanity, but I'd rather not have one meet me in a bar.  :-) Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:16, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Can you name an example of an extremist who is sane (according to you)? There are plenty of sane people who have radical ideas, but I don't know anyone who is an extremist and sane. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 01:41, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@The Quixotic Potato: My previous comment was meant as a joke. For Wikipedia articles, it doesn't matter whether we think a person is/was an extremist or insane - it only matters what the reliable sources say. GoingBatty (talk) 12:57, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

dead urls

If you don't mind my asking, how should one handle a cite linking to a url that is now dead? Deleting it seems a bit harsh in case the source has just moved. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 16:56, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) See if you can find an archived version of the URL at http://archive.org. If you find one, copy the whole URL from archive.org into |archive-url= and put the archiving date into |archive-date=. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:01, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Steelpillow: I've done just that in this edit to Boeing 787 Dreamliner. When a company reorganizes their web site, sometimes you can find the article at a different URL, which I did in these edits to the same article. GoingBatty (talk) 17:21, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Steelpillow: I've fixed 25 dead links in Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Hopefully one of my talk page stalkers can make suggestions for the other two. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:20, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 20:52, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

BattyBot removing brackets

BattyBot has been removing ]] at the end of images. It only removes the brackets if the end of the caption is a wikilink, thus four ] in a row. Examples are [1] and [2]. I have been fixing them when I find them. I have reverted ~8 edits of BattyBot so you can see some other articles. It has been going on for atleast two days. Bgwhite (talk) 20:45, 30 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Need to be <= AWB rev 11671 or >= AWB rev 11679 due to multiple revisions to deal with image/bracket/hiding changes. Rjwilmsi 21:16, 30 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Bgwhite: Thank you for reverting the bad edits. When I noticed the problem I stopped BattyBot and opened T114075. I did not run the bot unsupervised until the Rjwilmsi fixed the bug and I downloaded SVN 11679. Looking at BattyBot's contributions, all the edits were done with SVN 11673 on Sep 29. I'll check all the articles where BattyBot made the last edit on that page. GoingBatty (talk) 22:32, 1 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No need to check. Any problem articles should appear in CheckWiki and will be fixed. Bgwhite (talk) 22:46, 1 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A similar issue has been reported in T114345 and fixed in rev 11698. -- Magioladitis (talk) 11:04, 1 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Magioladitis: Thanks for letting me know - I've just installed SVN 11699. GoingBatty (talk) 22:32, 1 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You "shouldn't" run into this issue. I scanned any articles for this problem and Magioladitis has fixed them. Bgwhite (talk) 22:46, 1 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Magioladitis and Rjwilmsi: Still having troubles with brackets and images. See Binary data. I'm running 11694, so I don't know if the newer version fixes the problem. Bgwhite (talk) 00:46, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Magioladitis, Rjwilmsi, and Bgwhite: I'm getting the same problem with 11699. No more bot edits tonight.  :-( GoingBatty (talk) 01:05, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
On Binary data it was an IP edit breaking a wikilink beforehand so unrelated to recent image issues. Rjwilmsi 08:55, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can BattyBot task 25 fix airdate= ?

I found a straightforward date error in |airdate=, in Financial astrology. I checked the task 25 source code, and it looks like BattyBot is not yet looking for |airdate= or |air-date=. If you could add that parameter, that would be great.

It looks like |laydate= and |lay-date= are also subject to date validation (do a Find for laydate at Module:Citation/CS1), although I can't recall finding a date error in one of those parameters. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:36, 2 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonesey95: I had a few rules for airdate and laydate in User:BattyBot/CS1 errors-dates, and have added some more. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:43, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:01, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on User:Saqib mosin/sandbox requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://oveemo.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=68138:babar-javed-director-producer&catid=45&Itemid=214. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Bharatiya29 (talk) 09:29, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Bharatiya29: No objection from me. I probably created it so that the user could work on it and reword it in their own words, but it looks like that didn't happen. GoingBatty (talk) 12:55, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Creating pages with AWB

Hi GoingBatty, thanks for creating talk pages for some of the articles I created such as this this and this. I started off doing it manually but that was too combusome. I would be happy to learn from you the AWB filter that gave you that result. Thanks again.—M@sssly 17:06, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Masssly: On the "More" tab, I clicked Enabled and Prepend and entered {{WikiProject Ghana|class=stub}} with "Sort meta data after" checked. On the "Skip" tab, at the bottom I chose "Don't care" so it would add the template whether the talk page exists or not. GoingBatty (talk) 17:11, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Masssly: Also, please do not add WikiProject categories or stub categories to an article, as you did in this edit. WikiProject categories will appear on talk pages when you use the proper WikiProject template. Stub categories will appear on an article when you use the appropriate stub category. GoingBatty (talk) 17:14, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great, I understand how to work that filter now. And thanks for the hint on the templates too.—M@sssly 17:31, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Kindly clarify this last aspect: how to make a list of talk-pages to append some text such as {{WikiProject Ghana|class=stub}}. Eg. In AWB to make such a list I do Source:Category (recursive) and enter Category:Ghana and click on Make list. It produces a list of main-space articles among others and appends the text {{WikiProject Ghana|class=stub}} in those articles instead of their talk pages.—M@sssly 18:10, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Masssly: I made my list based on those articles that incorrectly had Category:WikiProject Ghana articles on the article. You might want to take your list of articles, go to the top AWB menu and choose List > Convert to talk pages. Many of these talk pages will already have the WikiProject template. Also note that some of those articles won't be stubs. You may want to limit |class=stub to those in a subcategory of Category:Ghana stubs. Good luck! Reference errors on 3 October

Hello, I'm ReferenceBot. I have automatically detected that an edit performed by you may have introduced errors in referencing. It is as follows:

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, ReferenceBot (talk) 00:31, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Probably a false positive - thanks to Jonesey95 for cleaning it up! GoingBatty (talk) 03:15, 4 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for your long-term efforts to help new editors. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

Editor User:Chris the speller submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

This nomination was supported and seconded by User: Go Phightins!, and User:Jim Carter.
