York independent schools[edit]

Tomtolkien (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · blacklist hits · AbuseLog · what links to user page · count · COIBot · Spamcheck · user page logs · x-wiki · status · Edit filter search · Google · StopForumSpam)

All the edits by this SPA seem to be to the benefit of an umbrella organisation promoting independent schools in the York area almost-instinct 16:09, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

User is Tomtolkien, fixed the link, if you don't mind. Slightly more colourful past in the user's talk page history. Related ips:

These IPs are not related. Where is you evidence. Oh - You don't have any! Shall we leave this up as evidence of your false allegations posted all over York related user pages?Tomtolkien (talk) 11:05, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure this is a spam issue, or if the IPs are truly related, if it is it may be a more long term systematic attempt to use Wikipedia to promote private schools. Rehevkor 02:53, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for the misspelling of the name: I had done it elsewhere too I find. Hope I've corrected it in all those places almost-instinct 10:23, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Absolute rubbish and more trash talk to cover this editor's wanton edit warring on York pages. Perhaps you would like to list the other 5 pages on which you've posted unsubstantiated false allegations? BTW I have nothing to do with the group in question - I merely put a page up due to a red wikilink indicating no page was present on a wikipage. Next time I won't bother! Tomtolkien (talk) 11:03, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It takes twosix to edit war. How can you claim you haven't been edit warring here? Perhaps you'd like yo start addressing and discussing the issues we have raised. Rehevkor 11:38, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As stated on your other thread: "We have encouraged you to discuss this with us". No you have not. I have repeatedly asked you to discuss. You have failed on every level to discuss. Instead you have reverted with no discussion, reasons, references, or attempt to reach consensus. Tomtolkien (talk) 11:50, 22 June 2010 (UTC) Please keep all discussion in one place, as previously requested. The correct place would be the York talk page. Placing spurious allegations all over WP is not the way to do things. Tomtolkien (talk) 11:53, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Throwing around accusations is not discussing. Rehevkor 13:59, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Support blacklisting Whether it's sockpuppetry or meatpuppetry; clear spamming. OhNoitsJamie Talk 13:36, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you believe it is spamming, please could you, and anyone else, then direct your allegations towards the IPs and not me - I have had nothing to do with this and none of the comments provide any evidence that I have. Is this how wikipedia works - if you don't agree with a POV throw mud until genuine contributors give up - it's worse than a playground!Tomtolkien (talk) 13:50, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you have nothing to do with this then step away. You have done your fair share of mud throwing. Content was added backed up by either spam sources or unreliable sources, and was removed, nothing beyond accusations and edit warring has been done to justify its inclusion. Rehevkor 14:00, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have taken no part in "mud throwing" - I have simply exposed your comments on other user pages to a wider audience. If you feel threatened by that, perhaps stop making false allegations and behave reasonably. That fact you refuse to post on one thread is indicative that you actually want to hide you activity! I'll step away once you withdraw your false allegations made against me. Until which time I'm happy to expose your activity for all to see. Tomtolkien (talk) 14:18, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Expose what? Perhaps you have me confused with someone else? Rehevkor 14:43, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

dreadcentral[edit]

I really don't have time to deal with this, but this user likes to add their blog as a reliable source and is spamming it across a large number of articles. I figure it's worth posting here rather than simply not doing anything. tedder (talk) 12:07, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notified user. User has removed your spam1. The user was also requested to stop adding these links in February but he removed that as well. MER-C 13:25, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Some news are only listed by Dread Central! I worked by my articles with IMDB sources, for my refrences but some refs are there listen at Dread Central, the spam is unwittingly. Zombie433 14:31, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone have an objection to adding dreadcentral.com and bloody-disgusting.com to the spam blacklist? It isn't a reliable source, it's derivative of another unreliable source (imdb) and only being added for self-promotion. tedder (talk) 12:44, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. COIBot reports incoming. MER-C 13:31, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see consensus established yet for bloody-disgusting being an unreliable source, per a recent discussion at the reliable sources noticeboard:[14]. I for one had used an exclusive interview on there to source a fact on an upcoming horror film. dissolvetalk 18:00, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think I jumped to the wrong conclusion on bloody-disgusting. I still think dreadcentral is an unreliable blog that gets inserted as spam, and (worse than that) Zombie433 replaces existing legitimate refs with links to dreadcentral. They have both been discussed before, so I may be entirely off-base. tedder (talk) 18:37, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
bloody-disgusting is borderline as a source IMHO (I'd much rather see an academic journal used). I too have noticed links being added to it almost en masse, which is troubling and symptomatic of self-promotion, spamming, and conflict of interest. I would prefer to see more discussion on its merits and limitations as a source rather than a blacklisting though. dissolvetalk 20:41, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, the AFDs on Dread Central are fairly revealing: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dread Central, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dread Central (2nd nomination). There's a lot of allegations of SPA, COI, and spam there. tedder (talk) 18:41, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

blacklisting bit.ly is overkill[edit]

I can't use a signature with too many characters, so I have to put a bit.ly link to my edit count. The problem is that bit.ly is blacklisted, which is overkill as bit.ly is used to shorten URLs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by T3h 1337 b0y (talkcontribs) 20:05, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"bit.ly is used to shorten URLs" therefore it can be used to circumvent the blacklist. MER-C 02:08, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also, please note that bit.ly is globally blacklisted at meta:WM:SPAM, not the local blacklist on the english Wikipedia. The global blacklist is used by all language versions of Wikipedia, as well as Wikibooks and other projects using the mediawiki software. Per meta:Spam blacklist/About, "URL redirection domains will be added uncontroversially, as they provide an exploit used to bypass the blacklist and serve no useful purpose on our projects." --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 03:32, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
