Sneaky spam patterns on medical articles

I'm noticing more and more of these. At a glance, appear to be well-written and well-sourced passages added to medical articles, usually by an editor with little or no edit history. Careful examination reveals one or two highly-spammy links snuck in. Two examples: this edit, (followed by my removal of the spam), and this edit, followed by my extraction of the spammy link. Not sure if these two examples are related, don't appear to be registered to the same party; editors could very well be paid SEO consultants. Just something to be on the lookout for on medical articles. OhNoitsJamie Talk 16:40, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

United States Sports Academy

This is record-keeping, for awareness and for any relevant discussion. There have been a number of single-purpose editors adding boilerplate text regarding the United States Sports Academy's "Awards of Sport" program to dozens of BLP articles. These awards include the "Jackie Robinson Humanitarian Award", the "Ronald Reagan Media Award", and the "IOC President's Disabled Athlete Award". The text in question typically consists of wording that features an overly prominent mention of the USSA, and in many cases was presented as the only entry in an "Awards" section, even with individuals who have received more prominent awards. The most recent account, Special:Contributions/Susieq3140, was challenged on this; they responded by adding what was described as a "third party reference" from the American Sport Art Museum and Archives. The ASAMA is a part of the USSA campus, and their domain is registered to the USSA. This is a long-term issue; an AfD in 2007 led to the deletion of over a dozen articles about the individual awards, deeming them of insufficient notability. The awards text (and also text about honourary degrees) has been applied on several occasions since then, and an article about the institution's president (which was deleted as part of the AfD) has been restored several times under different titles. I have gone through and removed the awards text from most of the articles. There may be certain circumstances where an individual award actually warrants a mention; for example, discussions at one article may lead to a restoration of reworked text becauase the award was presented by the IOC president. However, for the most part, the contributions appear to represent a concerted effort to use Wikipedia for promotional purposes.

There's a non-trivial intersection with the Adsense pub-8561201703191226 spammer. This is probably not a coincidence.

That's a century that I'd rather not score. Is this the new "Generic Chinese knockoff spam"?

Removal of points from WT:WPSPAM

I reverted this edit, as I think that it needs some discussion. Although I agree that these points do not identify spammers, these are quite common themes which may identify them. Of course on all sides the exceptions exist (there are IP editors adding quite some of the same domain which are not spammers, and non-IP editors who do spam, e.g.). Maybe the section needs some discussion, and should be expanded with a bit of a lede? --Dirk Beetstra T C 10:49, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

That section is outdated. I'm seeing a lot of:
This happens so much so that I wonder whether I've virtually eliminated "dumb" spamming in the time I patrol. MER-C 12:38, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

True, but the third example is still an IP adding only external links to the top of the list (and yes, many of the other additions are also by IPs) ... The list would need expansion for sure, refspamming and inline spamming occur more and more, I don't think the old stuff is completely gone. --Dirk Beetstra T C 13:11, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Citation spam for trademarkia.com

Spammers

These users edit articles about well-known American companies, adding an extremely detailed history of the company's trademark or service mark filings, cited by multiple reference links to their site. In my opinion they are not here to improve the encyclopedia, but to promote their site. A past conflict-of-interest discussion about the site is archived at Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard/Archive_41#User:Rabhyanker.2C_company_trademarkia.com. Concerns were also raised at User:Rabhyanker's talk page.

After the COI discussion petered out, things seemed to stabilize and no new links were added. I cleaned out existing links as I ran across them. However, since June 22, new account User:Marlova has resumed adding links. Marlova seems to be tasked with composing and dropping new text and citations to the Trademarkia site into as many articles as possible, following a general template that results in adding bare links that repeat the site's URL multiple times in the References section.

My concerns are the same ones that I (and other editors) stated in detail at the COI noticeboard back in February. Summarizing the main points, beyond the admitted conflict of interest, these edits are aggressively placed, obtrusively near the top of the article with little regard to article structure; they are overly long and detailed; and give undue weight to the trademark aspects of the subject. Overall, they are citation spam, providing citations for statements unlikely to be challenged. WP:REFSPAM says, "Often these are added not to verify article content but rather to populate numerous articles with a particular citation". This seems to be the motive.

Further, the content seems to be original research and is not sourced to any reliable source.

Please consider blocking any further addition of these links. At the moment, there are 167. --CliffC (talk) 02:17, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

I agree and removed a few, and hope to do more. The text is essentially trivia intended to promote the website. If a story on a company focuses on a trademark issue, then the trademark may become of encyclopedic value; otherwise, these details for just promotional noise. Johnuniq (talk) 10:50, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Something of historical interest, back on 14 February 2010 User:Therealcolletepierre cleaned out just the citation links from 30 articles, but unfortunately left no edit summaries and was reverted and blocked. --CliffC (talk) 22:01, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

One point previously overlooked: trademarkia.com is a self-published source and thus unacceptable as a citation source. --CliffC (talk) 21:12, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

I agree this is refspam, the telltale sign is (from what I've seen) that these accounts add links only to trademarkia.com. MER-C 08:22, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Update: there are now 121 links. Another spammer:

Welcome to the future: make a website with stuff taken from freely available information, add ads, promote via WP:REFSPAM on Wikipedia. Johnuniq (talk) 11:22, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Now 116 links. One more spammer, a small-timer:

Fresh spam today; 93 links left.

I think this group is missing a huge opportunity. Here is a person, self-interested or not, who has access to gobs of specific, reliably sourced information, and we're running him away like a common vandal. If he could learn to incorporate his edits with less trivia and more feel for article flow, he could enhance thousands of articles. Don't forget that COI is only an issue if it leads to bad editing. To the extent the bad can be taken out, the COI could be great impetus for this individual to keep working on Wikipedia. Ocaasi (talk) 03:05, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Re the edits: Almost all of them are nonencyclopedic detail. Many companies have hundreds of trademarks and information about them is simply not worth recording unless secondary sources have identified an issue of importance (for example, a notable dispute over trademarks). In the case of any worthwhile information, we need to use a secondary source that has considered the wider picture rather than performing original research by pulling out what an editor thinks are the relevant primary source records. There is also no indication that the website being spammed is a reliable source.
If edits like these are not strongly resisted, each article would be swamped with ten links per paragraph as people work out ways to exploit the work of volunteers at Wikipedia. A good clue that the users listed above have no interest in the welfare of Wikipedia is to look at their contributions and work out which are SPAs. Johnuniq (talk) 04:44, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
The point I'm making is that these "spammers" could be guided into editors. I know the primary focus on this page is spam, but that is not the only possible outcome for this case. These individuals have a tremendous amount of information and drive. It'd be great if they could contribute in a way which was more useful, and rather than just revert-warning-blocking, we should be giving them some other ways to do so. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ocaasi (talkcontribs) 05:35, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello --CliffC (talk), -- Johnuniq (talk), et al.,

The following is a response to your recent “Citation spam for Trademarkia” action, COI, and subsequent deletion of various contributions by Rabhyanker, Marlova, and SoKashira. And as an admission, I am a marketing professional at Trademarkia with many years of experience working with companies and their brands. I have a keen interest in the topic and have endeavored to add information to Wikipedia that is relevant and of pertinent interest to like-minded individuals.

  • First these contributions were made with the intent to add value and information to the Wikipedia initiative. Trademarks are integral elements of commerce that differentiates an individual or company’s product or service from others, including their competition. It places a ‘’tangible’’ value on something that is ‘’intangible’’. It’s what separates a ‘’Coca Cola’’ from a ‘’Pepsi Cola’’ or a ‘’McDonald’s’’ from a ‘’Burger King’’.
  • Trademarkia has licensed the trademark data at the USPTO and provides this unstructured data (ASCII-format) in a structured format to the public for free. This trademark information dates back to the 1870s and represents historical artifacts about companies and their brands. The data is accurate and can be verified at the source documents at the USPTO. (Note the USPTO TESS and TARR data, while reliable, is not indexed and makes inaccurate and inaccessible source data on the web.) As you are aware, there are inaccuracies on Wikipedia, contributions added from Trademarkia aspire to bring accuracy and engage Wikipedia’s users interested in companies and their brands. Contrary to CliffC’s and Johnuniq’s assessment, this trademark data is not essentially trivia but can present a window into a brand’s history, corporate culture, and its evolution.
  • Per criticism about Trademarkia on Wikipedia, recent contributions have attempted to abide by a few editors comments for spam, COI, aggressive placement, long, and undue weight. While there may be shades of merit in some comments they also misrepresent the underlying basis for these contributions. There also doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming consensus regarding COI or spam other than the seemingly biased weight coming from a core group of editors. Contributions by Rabhyanker, Marlova, and SoKashira have been undertaken in a transparent manner to reduce or eliminate any semblance to these criticisms. Much of the details added have been to publish the origin of the trademark, its owner, and a reference. And by the way, this published information assists the trademark owner to prevent infringement, innocent or malicious, by other parties.

We're open to suggestions. Looking forward to your thoughts and any constructive directives you can provide.SoKashira (talk) 17:23, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

It seems this issue is important to Trademarkia (for example, you have a total of 11 edits, yet have quickly noticed that some trademark info has been removed). Quite apart from the WP:COI and WP:REFSPAM issues, a fundamental problem with the information added by the five accounts mentioned above is that it relies on a primary source: an editor has decided which primary source records are relevant for a particular organization and has added the raw data to an article. That kind of editing is sometimes acceptable (e.g. for the population or annual rainfall of a town), but a secondary source should be used when describing the trademarks for an organization because otherwise it is not possible to verify that the added information presents an accurate and balanced picture. Furthermore, if no secondary source has chosen to record trademark information for a particular organization, it is inappropriate for Wikipedia (this is not a directory of trademark information). I have not added any more links. I have only been posting to these forums in an attempt to discover what following the rules entails. Is discussion not allowed here? I think we have the spamming under control. COI discussions underway at COIN. Discussions on the links themselves at ELN and on some of the article talk pages. --Ronz (talk) 23:39, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
