Removal of certain information from some school articles

Articles about some Singaporean schools have been experiencing a "purge" of some sort recently, with large chunks of information removed. Most of the information removed were about school culture, discipline system, history, CCAs and some trivia stuff. The following are some examples:

  1. Catholic High School
  2. Dunman High School
  3. Hwa Chong Institution
  4. Maris Stella High School
  5. Pasir Ris Secondary School
  6. Presbyterian High School

Does anyone agree that too much information is removed? I think that basic information, such as school uniform, school song and history, should not be removed. As for the trivia stuff such as CCAs, trimming them might be better than removing them completely. Most of the edits were done by Bali ultimate on the grounds that the removed information is not supported by reliable references. What do you think? _LDS (talk) 08:42, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WPSCH/AG#WNTI and Wikipedia:WikiProject_Schools/Article_guidelines#School_songs.2C_school_hymns_and_fight_songs may be of interest. WP:NPOV and WP:TRIVIA are common problems to articles about schools in general, and Singapore schools are no different. Where such facts are interesting and relevant, they should be woven into a paragraph. The verbatim text of a school song is definitely not desirable here; excerpts may be relevant to illustrate a certain point. Generally lots of WP:PEACOCKing too. Discussion is definitely helpful, though I won't disagree with the few edits listed per se. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 15:06, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Singapore hotels

"Singapore" vs "Singaporean"

I believe the usage in Singapore is to use the word "Singaporean" only as a noun (i.e. to refer to a citizen of Singapore). The adjectival form should be "Singapore", not "Singaporean" (eg Singapore passport, Singapore citizenship, Singapore government, Singapore dollar, Singapore food). I am not sure that the distinction is as strict as you make it out to be. I think it is perfectly acceptable to talk about a "Singaporean passport" and "Singaporean food", for instance. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 04:07, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

This is not just a noun / adjective issue. It is also an identity issue. It seems clear to me that there IS this distinction in the usage of the two terms in Singapore - Singaporean refers narrowly to citizens, and perhaps things directly related to them (eg. Singaporean inventions, Singaporean artworks). i think it is mostly foreigners operating in a foreign context who speak of things like 'Singaporean shoppers' - to a foreigner this might refer to anyone shopping in Singapore, ie Singapore consumers (cf. Californian shoppers) - but in local usage, this would be an unusual term referring to the subset of Singapore consumers who happen to be Singapore citizens. The distinction is especially relevant with the influx of migrants, globalisation, etc. In the example above, maybe up to a third or more of all shoppers in Singapore are NOT Singapore citizens! Take Singaporean achievements vs Singapore('s) achievements - if one of the foreign scientists working in Biopolis invented something big, it could be described as a great achievement in / for / by Singapore... even a Singapore achievement. but local usage would prevent it being described *directly* as a *Singaporean* achievement. People would feel uneasy about accepting this usage of the term, when they see that the inventor is a German or Thai national, who happens to live and work here for the time being (but if the scientist were to settle permanently here and acquires Singapore citizenship - then it could be seen as a Singaporean achievement). That is interesting, but I still wonder if such a strict distinction (Singaporean only relates to Singapore citizens – aha, you see what I mean?) exists in practice. Renaming of "The Float at Marina Bay"

There is a discussion at "Talk:The Float at Marina Bay#Move?" as to whether "The Float at Marina Bay" should be renamed "The Float@Marina Bay" which appears to be the official name, judging from StreetMap@Singapore (hah) and the official website of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Singapore/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 48 articles to be referenced, a 5.9% reduction from last week. The list of all other WikiProject UBLPs can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects.

Which bridge is this?

Which bridge is this?

This is an old postcard of Boat Quay, said to be c. 1900. Does anyone know which bridge is featured? It does not look like either Anderson Bridge (built 1910) or Cavenagh Bridge (built 1870). Assuming the spire in the distance is St. Andrew's Cathedral, could it be Coleman Bridge (formerly New Bridge, built 1886)? — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 11:06, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

Oranje Hotel

On looking for information about the "Oranje Hotel" an infamus prison in the dutch town of S'Gravenhage during WW2, I was rederected to the "Stamford House, Singapore" a building sometimes called "Oranje Building". A hotel is a building, but not all building are hotel's. To keep the information correct, it would be normal that this redirect is going to a page where all the options are mentioned. --Gesina11 (talk) 16:34, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

The Singaporean places wikiproject seems dead while not much activities seems to be happening here also..

More of a MOS template, like a general guide of what content / sections we like to have on the articles. A good example will be like Kallang, a half completed will look like Paya Lebar and Jalan Besar while Mount Vernon looks lacking. Tried looking at a similar wikiproject for places in New Zealand but not sure how to go to the pages under that project to have a reference. Actually it is fine to close the project also~! Merge Suntec articles

Currently, Suntec City has three articles under its name: Suntec City, Suntec City Mall and Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. They can be found listed under the Suntec disambiguation page. I'm sure some merging needs to be done, since they can't possibly be left separate. After all, they share a common topic. Hmmm. While I see there advantage of merging the three articles since they are closely related (particularly since "Suntec City" is little more than a stub), "Suntec City Mall" is quite a long article on its own. I realised the majority of the content on Suntec City Mall are bulleted lists. I think I will move the content to the Suntec City article, under a new section "Mall" (or "Shopping mall"). As for Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre, do you think I should park it under Suntec City - under a new section as well? I did some Googling, and all three had their own separate websites. Of course, perhaps the developers just wanted to differentiate them. It's still a "multi-use development" after all I suppose? SYOGOC Youth Olympics photos

Hello SGpedians, I was wondering if someone can help regarding the ongoing 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. It may be a long shot, but worth asking. The Organising Committee publishes photos of various events at a Flickr photostream. These photographs are tagged with CC-BY-NC licenses. I would like to see whether it's possible for someone to contact them and ask if some can be released as CC-BY-SA so that they can be used in Wikipedia. The release should probably go through the OTRS system if successful. Considering it's the first ever Youth Olympics, and because the Organising Committee seems open to media coverage from around the world, there might be a chance this is possible. Xavier0510 is going to laugh (see the "Notability issue" section above) when I say this, but why does it have to be "someone" and not you personally who contacts the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC)? I'm not saying this because I'm annoyed or anything, but we are all volunteers here at Wikipedia so each of us has an equal ability and responsibility to do what is needed to keep the project humming along. Also, there do not seem to be many active Singaporean Wikipedians, at least judging from the responses to messages at this talk page. I have only change my sights to SG articles recently only also. I think Arsonal can also contact the blog owner (SYOGOC) via the blog to ask them release more photos on Flickr. I think all of us, whether resident in Singapore or not, are pretty much in the same position as regards contacting the SYOGOC. Anyway, I had a look at the official Games website's terms of use, and it says: "Request for written consent to use Materials should be directed to the [email protected]. Please give details of your intended use of the relevant Material(s) and include your contact details: your name, address, telephone number, fax number and email." But I agree with Xavier0510 that it may be easier to contact the Flickr user to see if he or she will change the licence on the images to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 10:51, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Reliable source to be used?

Hi, I was defending the "family tree" at LKY article last 2 days against a trio of editors who came out of nowhere who wants to remove the prominent work. I have contributed to the article, however am not the originator of the tree. But I find that it has merit both visually and notable. If removed, the article is mainly text and looks kinda dull as well. Does anyone in SGpedian here have an opinion on this? Singapore articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

National Junior Robotics Competition - citations

Found 3 links, 2008 competition's theme - [3], an article on robotics with mention of the competition [4] and for this, [5] (digitised copy of The Straits Times, 8 September 2001), you need to go down to the library to read in detail (Extract - Keen rivalry at robotics competition DAWN WONG M THE popularity of the annual National Junior Robotics Competition is soaring with the number of teams taking part this year double that of last year. Changi Airport buildings

Regarding File:SIA Boeing 747-400, Star Alliance livery, SIN.jpg - this photo

What are the names of the buildings in the background of the photo? I wanted someone to take a photo of Airline House, the Singapore Airlines head office. Is Airline House not visible in the photo? WhisperToMe (talk) 06:59, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

  • @WhisperToMe: actually, those buildings in the photos with SIA logo affixed, they are all Airline House (most people mistook/misunderstood Airline House as a single building, which is not the case here since it is actually more of a complex) but if it is the front facade you want, I can't help much except to ask you to try approaching the PR department for help. In any case, I suspect it might not be much you can expect from them since I know them all too well already. Like I said, put up a request to them and see what happens.   • Ah - It looked like a single building from the map. Well, since both of those buildings are "Airline House" then I can use them to represent the HQ.

Just noticed this category Places In Pulau Tekong while going through unassessed articles. Any opinions on these articles? Pulau Tekong 300 metres range, Rocky Hill Camp, Sanyongkong Field Camp, Ladang and technically not a place but just a road, Tekong Highway.

Languages_of_Singapore is a Good Article Nominee, but the nominator hasn't edited in nearly a month. The article is promising (I am reviewing it to see if it can attain good article status) and I have left some questions at Talk:Languages_of_Singapore/GA1 which is the review page.
