Initial update[edit]

I currently have List of Detroit Lions first-round draft picks at WP:FLC, with List of Detroit Lions seasons prepped and ready for nomination once of my current nominations are processed (List of National Football League annual interceptions leaders is the other nom I have). Additionally, List of Seattle Seahawks seasons is currently nominated at FLC by @SounderBruce while @ULPS has gotten List of Baltimore Ravens seasons and List of Houston Texans seasons promoted recently.

I think it would be really cool if we could get a full set of these to featured status, though I realize it's unlikely and that I can't do it by myself. If anybody else wants to work on any of these I'd be happy to help out and give advice. Even if you just want to promote a list for your favourite team, that's fine too, I would just love to see progress made on more NFL lists. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:33, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if I'll pick up the Seahawks coach list, but the seasons list FLC has stalled due to a lack of reviews. If anyone can drop a few comments, it'd be much appreciated. SounderBruce 20:09, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like the Chargers are covered already (I can take some credit for the 1st-round picks list). Harper J. Cole (talk) 00:04, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nice. I'm the one who made the Chargers list. I didn't realize you took it to FL! ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 00:36, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nice job people! Some of these are proving easier than I initially expected. I've got the Lions first picks one at FLC and the Lions season one ready, but I've also got the Jaguars first picks, Jaguars seasons, and Saints seasons mostly prepped with a bit of work left. I'm going to polish those 3 off though so they're fully ready to be nommed before moving on to another one. Then they'll just sit in my "to be nommed" queue for a bit til their time comes. Hey man im josh (talk) 00:44, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, I think the Vikings one has been ready for years, but because of some daft rule that list articles for lists with fewer than 10 entries shouldn't be spun off from a main article, it was denied when I first nominated it. I reckon it would be an immediate promotion with a bit of tweaking now. – PeeJay 16:46, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PeeJay, thankfully that is no longer a problem anymore. Put it up! List of Green Bay Packers retired numbers only has six items. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 17:04, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@PeeJay: In the last FLC nomination, which you started, they mentioned generally wanting at least 10 items on lists, which this now has vs the 7 it had in 2009 when it was nominated. The Chiefs had 10 when it was promoted in 2008. Additionally, the table itself has been pretty beefed up and the article is over 10,000 bytes larger now. Between that and the Packers' retired numbers list, I think you should be fine. I say do some cleanup on the list and give it another shot. Hey man im josh (talk) 17:13, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just nominated List of Atlanta Falcons seasons at FLC, if anyone wants to leave some comments it would be appreciated :) ULPS (talkcontribs) 22:42, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2023-December-18 Update[edit]

A few notes... Since I shared this table, I've nominated List of Detroit Lions seasons at WP:FLC. I've also prepped an additional 6 lists that I believe are ready for FLC nomination:

These lists cannot be nominated until my active FLCs are reviewed, but I wanted to get as many ready as I could in the mean time. I've had one person take me up on the offer to work on these lists, and we're working on List of Chicago Bears first-round draft picks. Additionally, I've highlighted the ones I prepped in the table and noted which teams are entirely completed. I'm still more than happy to work with anybody interested in taking on a list and helping promoting to featured status. I'm willing to work on-wiki with others, but I'd ideally prefer to go back and forth over Discord if that's an option.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Hey man im josh (talkcontribs) 16:54, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man im josh, great work! One thing that should be considered as part of this is going through some of the older WP:FLs you have identified and making sure they are up to current standards. I have been slowly doing this for WP:PACKERS lists, and some of these that were passed as early as 2008 aren't in great condition (need inline cites, need accessibility in the tables, need expansion, need better Legends, etc). Just a note, but great work on the existing lists you have prepped! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 17:06, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Gonzo fan2007! I've felt in a bit of a pickle regarding the state of some of these previously promoted lists, and I did notice and appreciate what you've been doing. I'll address them if they become nominated for featured list removal, but for the time being, I'm focused on upgrading lists that have don't have the FL classification yet. I thought about a featured topic, but I don't think there's one that can be made for NFL lists unfortunately. Hey man im josh (talk) 17:10, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2024-January-02 Update[edit]

Since my last update on this, the following has occurred:

So, in summation, two more lists have been promoted to featured, while another 3 from my above table (and a bonus list) have been nominated! Including List of National Football League annual interceptions leaders, which has been nominated since November 6, 2023, we currently have 5 lists nominated for promotion to featured status!

This is great news and progress from the WikiProject, for which I'm grateful. Keep it up folks! Hey man im josh (talk) 13:35, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man im josh, would you be opposed to moving this discussion and the table to a separate project page, like Wikipedia:WikiProject National Football League/Featured List Project. That way, we can follow that page for updates and the material won't get auto-archived? « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:36, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @Gonzo fan2007, I think this was asked while I was away on vacation. I'm not opposed to it if others are interested in a dedicated page. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:41, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some Updates[edit]

I just wanted to note that I spent some time and improved the existing FLs for WP:PACKERS up to what I consider the current standard for FL:

Also, I nominated two lists to WP:FLRC: List of Los Angeles Rams head coaches and List of Carolina Panthers seasons. I am thrilled to see both are getting a lot of necessary TLC from editors. I will be nominating others, but slowly (maybe one every few weeks), to give people time to address issues. There are 4 that are on my radar: List of Cleveland Browns seasons, List of Los Angeles Chargers seasons, List of Tampa Bay Buccaneers seasons and List of Washington Commanders seasons if anyone is passionate about any of them and want to get started improving them now.

Lastly, I am working on setting up a separate article alerts page that will just show active FLs and FLRCs for WP:NFL. Hopefully it works, then we will have a nice automated way to existing nominations. Hey man im josh, when these get completed, it may be possible to nominate to a Featured Topic, or even add in a new category of lists (starting QBs? Stadiums? players in the Hof by team?). Thanks for getting this started! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:55, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I too was thrilled to see people willing to help and make sure lists don't get delisted! There's no question that a number of these older lists need a lot of work. We should ping @Harper J. Cole:, our resident Chargers expert / biggest fan, for the List of Los Angeles Chargers seasons list. They got the Chargers starting QBs and first-round pick articles promoted and, given their interest in promoting Chargers related articles, I think they're the best possible person to ask for help on this.
It'd be nice to get to the point of a featured topic, and that's exactly what I've thought about at times. I don't think the first-round picks would work as a topic because we'd be asked to include the NFL Draft articles in the topic. The HC topic may work, but I think the list of seasons is probably the most likely to be possible. Though, I worry that we'd be asked to include each season promoted. The topic would have to be lists of NFL seasons instead of NFL seasons. I've never nominated or been part of a good or featured topic, so I'm not exactly an expert. Hey man im josh (talk) 17:03, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I could have a look at that, sure. Seems like the opening could use some citations. Harper J. Cole (talk) 23:45, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone through that - hopefully more like FL standard now. Harper J. Cole (talk) 23:52, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You did an awesome job @Harper J. Cole, thank you very much! Hey man im josh (talk) 13:09, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is my next list in the queue for WP:FLC. If anyone is interested and want to take a look and let me know if you see any major issues, it would be appreciated! This would be the first of the "Pro Bowl selections" by team lists to go to FLC. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 21:36, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Great stuff, I'll make sure to give it a review when I get some time :) Hey man im josh (talk) 13:07, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of starting quarterbacks[edit]

@Gonzo fan2007 mentioned the possibility of adding the lists of National Football League quarterbacks by team, which I'd be in favour of. I'd just like us to decide on a format and what's relevant before I dive in to it.

My thoughts on inclusion:

  • Table for starter during regular season
  • Table for starters during post season, or include post season in starters table to make it a single one
  • Seems normal to have a table for most games as starting quarterback
  • Tables typically include:
  • # of games started
  • # of wins losses
  • # of losses
  • # of ties
  • Postseason breakdown for the same items above
  • Sometimes includes:
  • Period (years that the player started for the time)
  • Games played (in addition to started, though I'm against this since the focus is on starting quarterbacks)
  • Team records – But to what extent? Top 5 in a specific stat? Everybody with 1,000 passes? What columns for the table?
  • I do think 1,000 passing attempts for the franchise is a reasonable threshold
  • Suggested columns to include
  • Completions
  • Attempts
  • Completion percentage
  • Passing yards
  • Passing touchdowns
  • Interceptions

Just a few things I thought I'd bring up. We can possibly work shop something and ask for more feedback at the main talk page.

For reference, List of Minnesota Vikings starting quarterbacks (promoted in 2009 by @PeeJay) and List of Los Angeles Chargers starting quarterbacks (promoted by @Harper J. Cole in 2023) are the only two featured lists for starting quarterbacks. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:14, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some of my thoughts:
  • The predominant layout and organization of these lists is from pre-table sorting era. Every other list type in WP:NFL uses the standard format of table: a single entry per cell. This allows table sorting and grouping of similar data points. I think if I were looking at the current FLs at FLC today, I would question whether the current layout meets WP:FLCR #4, i.e. that they currently are not easy to navigate and are not sortable when that would actually be helpful.
  • Regarding stats, imho these are more appropriate for the "List of records" lists (i.e. List of Green Bay Packers records). The starting QB lists are about starts and related things (win/loss record, seasons started, etc) and not statistics. A simple link in the "See also" section would suffice (that said, if we do include stats, I think List of Green Bay Packers records#Passing leaders should be the standard we should stick to and it should be the top 10 by passing yards).
  • I think the most important thing regarding these lists is what to do with pre-1947/1950 data. I haven't found any sourcing to support any starting QBs back in this era. Let's take a classic example here: Arnie Herber. Herber stills has the 7th most passing yards for any Packers QB, yet on PFR he is noted as being a tailback, halfback, blocking back and quarterback. This era just isn't conducive to "starting QBs" as we know the topic today. Early football, the QB wasn't much more than the guy who took the handoff and pitched it to someone else. I think this is probably the biggest issue to resolve regarding these lists.
Lastly, I think we need to shy away from significant notes in the table. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:12, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just to elaborate on the sorting function and why it is so much better, take a look at List of Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl selections today versus what the table used to look like. Like looking at 1962 in that table, with one cell holding 9 names, its just super tough to navigate and read. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:23, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I also felt the same way about the early era starting QBs, it's going to be difficult to verify. Perhaps we should focus on where it actually lists a player as the QB and not just as a tailback that happens to pass? No way it flies at FLC if we don't provide sources that confirm those early guys were quarterbacks.
  • I completely agree that we should want to split these tables and not have multiple entries in each cell so that we can allow sorting functionality. I actually mocked something up in my sandbox:
3 examples of possible tables

Option A (the current implementation):

Season(s) Quarterback(s) Ref(s)

I believe that we would both have the same preference in option B. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:49, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey man im josh, agreed on Option B, defintiely. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 22:26, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey man im josh, I think I am pretty much done with List of Green Bay Packers starting quarterbacks. Before going to WP:FLC, do you mind taking a quick look and letting me know if you would have any concerns. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 18:39, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gonzo fan2007: From a quick pass over, it looks pretty good.
  • I'd consider adding something to the key to indicate someone was indicted into the PFHOF and Green Bay's HOF, possibly the double-dagger template. Alternatively, you could simply edit the key to indicate they were inducted into both if the dagger is there, since that seems to be the case for all of the HoF players in the list.
  • Aaron Rodgers' caption doesn't sit right with me. Do you think using an actual percentage instead of a decimal in the blurb under his image could read better?
  • I'd consider replacing the history.com source, but it's not necessarily a deal breaker for me
  • I might consider rewording or adding a note to the column for "Seasons as starting QB" to better indicate that they were a starter during those seasons, not necessarily for the whole season, but that could be knit picking
That's what I've got on initial review. No big red flags, but when I review the list at FLC I might find a couple more things here and there. Hey man im josh (talk) 18:55, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey man im josh, thanks! What do you think of the caption now? Winning percentage, from what I typically see, is reported as a decimal (so .661, instead of 66.1%). I reworded a bit to put it in parenthesis instead of in the actual sentence. Thoughts? I'll take a look at the History.com source. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 19:15, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gonzo fan2007: The brackets definitely help. I agree though that these winning percentages are typically listed in decimals for most sites, but when spoken they'd be said as percentages. The brackets is enough for me to say that reading is improved and good enough. Hey man im josh (talk) 19:17, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

List of pro Bowl selections by team[edit]

I pulled the template above ({{NFL team Pro Bowl selections}}) together after bringing List of Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl selections to WP:FLC. A few stats:

  • 5 standalone articles have been created under this category
  • I created 6 redirects to sections that already existed in team articles
  • That leaves 21 articles remaining as redlinks.

Could be an interesting grouping to work on under this working group, if anyone is interested in specific lists. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 20:10, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm patiently watching your FLC to see how it plays out. If it goes well then I don't see why we couldn't expand the sets we have to address these. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:44, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So far, so good! Hoping it can be a solid template moving forward. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 22:40, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For those interested, List of Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl selections got the star! Should be a (hopefully) solid template to work off for other teams, if anyone is interested. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 14:18, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2024-February-12 Update[edit]

Since the last update, the following has occurred:

Great work to everybody involved, which are @Gonzo fan2007, @ULPS, @Tails Wx, @PeeJay, and myself. Keep it up folks, we're doing a great job at improving the amount of featured lists within the project and Wikipedia :) Hey man im josh (talk) 13:43, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to note here that I have three lists at WP:FLRC that fall within this task force.

From at least my initial look, these should be the last lists I nominate under the "seasons" category. Some other lists probably need a little TLC, but are at least in a functional shape per FL standards. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 14:18, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
