Help with the National memo article

Hi. I as for the community help in reviewing The National Memo article. The article has been undergoing dramatic edits and I ask for the assistance in editing/improving this article.

I while ago I was asked to make several minor edits to the article as paid editor (this fact has been clearly stated following all the COI editing rules). At that time the article had minimal content and was no more than a stub. I’ve added some information following the structure of such articles as Salon (website), HuffPost, Politico adding infobox, improving categories and adding well-referenced info. The article started to look more like a normal website/media article.

Then it got heavily edited in 2 waves by editors deleting large chunks of well-written (ok, my personal view :)) and well-referenced information. I believe that some of these edits/deletions are extraneous and actually make the article worse/less useful to Wikipedia users. I also believe that The National Memo article has an undisputable notability. There is an interesting discussion about this at the article’s Talk page.

A lot of what is going on around this article is plain nonsense. Being an ex-journalist, I feel that the edits go beyond the limit of good faith, so if you are interested in improving this article, please take a look at January 10th version or January 29th version. Also if you have any suggestions on improving the article, please share. I am also tagging here Nbauman who wanted to share his point of view on the facts to keep. Thank you in advance. -- Bbarmadillo (talk) 21:42, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

There has been a longstanding tradition of elaborating upon publications in Wikipedia. For example, the New York Times article would describe for the reader, under various headings and subheadings, certain aspects of the Times, calling attention to various details of importance (i.e., calling it a "newspaper" versus digital media). Occassionally, other elaborations would follow, including the publication's political leanings and any discussions of whether it leaned right or left. This can be described as "holding the hands of the reader" in that Wikipedia (as the adult) must hold the hands of and guide the reader (as the child) through the article in a manner similar to "Now look here, this part explains what a newspaper is, it is a printed piece of paper," etc. As far as partisan leanings, the hand holding would continue, in a manner similar to "The paper has been known to express liberal leanings, here are some notable examples" etc.
This hand holding can be controversial for obvious reasons, as editors can and do worry about the political leanings of the particular hand doing the holding on behalf of Wikipedia. This is why hand holding which describes the political leanings of publications has traditionally been done only when that publication is well established or otherwise immediately apparent (Der Stürmer for example) and when it does occur, it traditionally has been lower down in the article, not being one of the first things mentioned. As times become increasingly partisan, there has been a renewed sense of the need to hold hands of the reader - in this case, the COI editor believes for the publication the National Memo that this hand holding should be immediate and compulsory, even though the publication itself is relatively young and its leanings not demonstrably apparent. It would seem that this is to skip the traditional safeguards which have been set in place for hand holding of this type. Spintendo      19:08, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Incoming links from Facebook

Hello, all, I thought people at this WikiProject might be particularly interested in this announcement. As I understand it, Facebook's news stories will be linking to Wikipedia articles about the newspapers that they originate from.

BTW, User:Harej keeps an up-to-date list of users who frequently edit related articles for most WikiProjects. You can see the list for your group at Wikipedia:WikiProject Directory/Description/WikiProject Journalism. • Keep a look-out for more disruption on articles about the publishers, I guess. This is going to have a difficult interaction with AP2 DS - I think we're likely to see lots of new editors coming to "correct" information about a publisher where we wouldn't normally see the publisher's page as falling under the AP2 topic. Does the fact Facebook uses the information to inform readers of the publisher's reliability on political topics push the article into the AP2 topic? Does the fact that editors are disrupting a page for political purposes even though the page hasn't an immediately obvious political connection push that page into the AP2 topic? GoldenRing (talk) 11:01, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the heads up. I'm actually more concerned about WMF working closely with Facebook to track visitors than I am about the impact that those visitors will have on our content. • Something that strikes me is that this will put a lot more attention on the first two sentences of the publisher articles. Looking at them in my Facebook feed, I find that they frequently include only very routine identification data and often don't contain any information that users will find valuable. E. g., here is NBC News:

NBC News is the news division of the American broadcast television network NBC, formerly known as the National Broadcasting Company when it was founded on radio. The division operates under NBCUniversal News Group, a subsidiary of NBCUniversal, in turn a subsidiary of Comcast....

And here is Fox News:

Fox News (officially known as the Fox News Channel, commonly abbreviated to FNC) is an American basic cable and satellite television news channel owned by the Fox Entertainment Group, a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox. The channel broadcasts primarily from studios at 1211 Avenue of the Americas, New York City, New York.

I'm not sure just what should be in this first graph, but I'm pretty sure the fact that Fox broadcasts from studio 1211 is not the lede people need. I wonder if folks in this project will find it desirable to think about our guidance re. what should be in the first paragraph? Jmatazzoni (talk) 16:58, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:44, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Please join the discussion on what sources would be adequate for what claims on this time-sensitive article. We have the problem that countless sources point in the same direction, but the usual sources for such aggregate information fail to provide it. --Nemo 07:11, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

American journalists a non-diffusing category?

Category:American journalists was tagged on 2018-03-18 as a non-diffusing category by 142.161.81.20 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), which as far as I can tell is consistent with similar categories -- we generally categorize people by occupation, and place them concurrently in other categories based on gender, ethnicity, religion, etc., without removing them from the nationality-occupation category. At WP:DUPCAT the guideline says "Subcategories defined by gender, ethnicity, religion, and sexuality should almost always be non-diffusing subcategories." This is expanded on in the guidelines at Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality.

So Ser Amantio di Nicolao has just removed several hundred bios from category:American journalists with no edit summary -- I'm assuming the reason is because they are members of category:Jewish American journalists or or something? If that is the reason I think they need to be reverted. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 15:30, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

So, the ones I removed are either in subcategories such as the subcategories of Category:American journalists by state or the subcategories of Category:American journalists by type. My removals had nothing to do with categorization by gender or ethnicity; everything I removed should be in one of the diffusing subcategories. (That's the way, for instance, Category:American novelists and its subcategories have been handled over the years.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:47, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

I've identified inaccuracies, suggested specific wording, and provided reference markup for easier implementation. Are any WikiProject Journalism participants willing to take a look and update the article appropriately? I do not edit the main space directly because of my conflict of interest. Thanks! List of journalists killed in Europe

Hi! I've just created a List of journalists killed in Europe, divided by country. If there are no objections I am also planning to create circa 20 redirects such as List of journalists killed in France > List of journalists killed in Europe#France. There already were articles about Russia and Turkey, and a section about Ukraine (I've linked them with {{See also}}), but it probably doesn't make sense to create autonomous articles on other European countries. --Niccolò Caranti (OBC) (talk) 08:53, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Bot to improve names of media sources in references

Hi everyone! I just wanted to draw your attention to a recent proposal I made for a bot. I'll copy the request below:

Many references on Wikipedia point to large media organizations such as the New York Times. However, the names are often abbreviated, not italicized, and/or missing links to the media organization. I'd like to propose a bot that could go to an article like this one and automatically replace "NY Times" with "New York Times". Other large media organizations (e.g. BBC, Washington Post, and so on) could fairly easily be added, I imagine.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated! - Sdkb (talk) 00:28, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

Chequebook journalism expansion

The Verge updates

Hello again! I've been working to update the Wikipedia article for The Verge on behalf of Vox Media and as part of my work at Beutler Ink. User:Lordtobi has been responding to my talk page requests, but they're currently experiencing health issues. Nonfree logos in newspaper infoboxes

Nonfree logos cannot be used in the same infobox as a sample front page; it's one or the other. This was previously discussed here and was recently endorsed here. I've been removing some of the redundant and noncompliant images from infoboxes; it'd be great to get some help. --MarchOrDie (talk) 13:56, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

  • I've removed a few of them. If folks could please refrain from adding any more pending a consensus that they are a good thing (or even a consensus that they are justifiable fair use), that would be amazing. The instructions at the template do say not to do this. --MarchOrDie (talk) 01:43, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
OK. But at Hamodia, you just replaced a fair-use logo with a fair-use front page. What's the difference, licensing-wise? Yoninah (talk) 22:29, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
No, look again. I replaced two fair use images with one fair use image. The consensus is that one is ok but two is excessive. --MarchOrDie (talk) 22:39, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
I don't see how removing valid logos (especially those in PD-ineligible form) is worth spending time and energy on, especially when supported by sporadic discussion over a decade-long period. Call a proper RfC, will ya? SounderBruce 23:18, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Great idea. If you want to change the longstanding consensus that's definitely your best move. What is it that you think having the logo twice achieves exactly? --MarchOrDie (talk) 23:33, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Some articles lack front page images, others use front pages that don't clearly display the logo (or have it very small, which makes it pointless). Website articles include both the logo and a screenshot, and we should follow suit. SounderBruce 23:40, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

I appreciate this being brought up, and I tend to agree with SounderBruce that there's not much point in rushing ahead without discussing a bit more first. I also don't know that a full-blown RfC is worthwhile until we've more done a bit more evaluation of what issues and precedents are involved.

In the case of Hamodia, I don't think the logo is under copyright. Unless I'm mistaken, it should simply be moved to Commons, and labeled with the textlogo licensing template. I would imagine this will be the same in the case of a great many newspaper logos, which have perhaps been labeled as "fair use" due to an inaccurate assessment of their copyright status.

Glad to see this issue brought up, and I hope we can discuss a bit more before forging ahead with substantial article-space action. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 01:36, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

More detail on simple text logos here: commons:Commons:Licensing#Simple design -Pete Forsyth (talk) 01:50, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
In the case of The Stranger, the logo is already on Commons, marked as public domain, and has been since 2011. So this one is quite clearly not a violation of the consensus you cited, MarchOrDie. Again, I urge discussion, so we don't have to get into stuff like WP:3RR. I'm confident we can figure out a path forward we can all agree with. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 01:56, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

One thing to note is that prematurely removing non-free logos means that they get scooped up for automatic deletion by the bot (e.g. File:Tacoma News Tribune logo.svg). We should restore the status quo and discuss things first so that the vector non-free logos aren't lost forever. SounderBruce 04:27, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

The either/or choice of logo vs. front page is longstanding but it has not actually obtained a community consensus. As discussed here, the results after more than a decade are inconclusive. I would like to see this question raised at RfC because it affects a very large number of pages, many of which are very high profile. I think a hi-res masthead should always take precedence over a lo-res front page, for purposes of quality and easy identification. I question the need for a front page at all, given how subjective the choice can be: some are current, some are a century old; some are a paper's most anodyne, some are its most notorious. Is it worth it to hash this out on all these talkpages, when we could simply go with a masthead? Front page choices will be continuously re-litigated as times go by, while a firm decision in favor of logos/mastheads would save a lot of arguments and wasted productivity among editors. SteveStrummer (talk) 01:30, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

I agree with SteveStrummer about masthead/logo only. It gives quick and easy identification of the product at the top of the infobox. Yoninah (talk) 17:52, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
I do like having the front pages if they are representative of normal/day-to-day content. It's a pretty easy way of giving users an idea of how the newspaper presents itself (as they can literally judge the book by the cover). SounderBruce 08:09, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

So how will we resolve this? The user who made many edits based on their interpretation, some of which had inaccurate or even threatening edit summaries, has not (yet?) returned to discuss. I respect that there are divergent interpretations of policy, and divergent opinions about what best serves the reader. How should we resolve this?

I would suggest as a starting point that the bulk of the logo removals should be reverted, pending further discussion. It seems to me that most were removed on the basis of flawed logic, as described above (i.e., most of the logos are not actually copyrighted or copyrightable). Removals based merely on aesthetic judgment (i.e., it looks bad to have both a logo and a front page) shouldn't, in my view, be made en masse, but should be discussed first, either article-by-article or in a central place like this. Thoughts? -Pete Forsyth (talk) 01:22, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

The policy regarding front page images was inserted in 2014 into Template:Infobox newspaper/doc. This was justified by this one-on-one discussion at the Template:Infobox newspaper talkpage. Considering the wide impact, this issue needs a community consensus at RfC. SteveStrummer (talk) 02:06, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
Pinging John and Ssolbergj to join this discussion, and leaving notice at the template talkpage as well. SteveStrummer (talk) 02:35, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
IMO it's best to do as much processing ahead of filing an RfC as practical... so as to present the issues in as clear a way as possible to the wider community. And the aesthetic side of it -- that is, what to do when the logo is copyright free/public domain -- seems like one that's better decided by people who care about newspaper articles, than seeking community-wide consensus.
Maybe drafting an RfC statement here, with a week or so for input from those in this discussion/WikiProject, would be a good step? -Pete Forsyth (talk) 03:41, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
The question put forth in this particular section was "Can nonfree logos be used alongside nonfree cover images?" The answer is No: only one nonfree image may be used to illustrate a page. But free logos were being removed as well (like here and elsewhere) because of the wording in the template. There never was a consensus to have such wording, and I think the first step should be removing it from the template doc — which I plan to do in one week absent any objection here. Logos and covers have coexisted in Template:Infobox magazine and Template:Infobox website since dragon days and there's no reason why they shouldn't here. Ultimately the question for RfC will be: When both logo and cover are nonfree, what illustration is most appropriate? SteveStrummer (talk) 02:02, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
After waiting an extra couple of days, I removed the disputed guideline. Now we have to decide what to do when both image options are non-free. Alongside that, we have suggestions to simply drop the use of one or the other entirely. Currently image options are a matter of editorial discretion on a case by case basis, but I think it's time we developed a firm policy by consensus. Can we settle this here or should we have an RfC? SteveStrummer (talk) 22:53, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

  • Within each section, should the entries by sorted alphabetically or chronologically?
  • Should date of birth and date of death be added to entries?
    • Should nationality, date of birth, and date of death information be supported using reliable sources if that information is in the entry's corresponding article?
  • Is the Photographers' Identity Catalog (PIC) a reliable source for nationality, date of birth, and date of death?
    • If a source is deemed reliable, should there be a limit on how many times it is used?

Carlos Slim's ownership of The New York Times

With all the talk about foreign interference, it seems odd to me that Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim is barely mentioned in The New York Times (only in the infobox). I believe it should be added to the lede, and there should be a subsection about his stake (when he acquired it, how much he owns, and what the public reactions have been). I think we need to be mindful to use very reliable third-party sources to make sure the content is neutral. Is anyone interested in working on this please?Zigzig20s (talk) 14:25, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

There is quite a bit at The New York Times Company#Carlos Slim loan and investment. Perhaps this content could be copied and pasted? Most of our readers will only read The New York Times, not The New York Times Company, so we are currently doing them a disservice. We are supposed to edit for them!Zigzig20s (talk) 14:26, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
I think it'd be worth mentioning briefly in a sentence somewhere in the body of the article, but unless there's evidence that Slim's involvement has affected the Times in an editorial capacity, I don't think it'd be appropriate to add as much as is in the company article, and not in the introductory section. - Sdkb (talk) 15:53, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
I think it should be in the lede, just as (American) billionaire Jeff Bezos is in the lede of The Washington Post. As far as I can tell, Carlos Slim is a foreign national with a significant stake in the American "newspaper of record"...that sounds like foreign interference to me. (Does he have a green card?) Of course, any wealthy foreign national with investments in the U.S. exerts foreign interference/influence in U.S. society, but that is the reality of globalization. To your point, are there interviews with Slim telling us how he feels about the editorial line of his newspaper? And does it matter? I don't think Bezos necessarily controls what WP journalists publish.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:24, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Are foreign nationals stakeholders in many US firms? Yes, they are. Do they get identified in the lead sections of those companies' articles? Almost never, and certainly not without a clear reason. If no reason can be given for singling out Slim as opposed to any other NYT owner, then this is deep body content, and the other owners should be mentioned too. SteveStrummer (talk) 20:34, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
I think we should follow the same pattern as The Washington Post, where billionaire investor Bezos is mentioned in the lede. After all, Slim has been the owner of a significant stake of The New York Times since 2015. You make a good point about foreign influence in U.S. society through corporate investments, and it is particularly relevant with newspapers, as they manipulate our perceptions of reality by publishing "the news", including political speech--and remember The New York Times is supposedly America's "newspaper of record"!Zigzig20s (talk) 20:57, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
I'm not all that knowledgeable about business structures, but I'd imagine that there's quite a difference between having a 17% stake in a company and owning a company, so I'm not sure it's appropriate to make a direct comparison between the NYT and WaPo. - Sdkb (talk) 21:14, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
I made no such point about "foreign influence" much less "manipulation". I said foreign stakeholders are common among US firms - just like American stakeholders are common among foreign firms. There is nothing remarkable about this. SteveStrummer (talk) 22:18, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Help with independent review

Hi,

The article Jonathan Swan has an advert tag, with a discussion at Talk:Jonathan_Swan#Advert User: Ronz has requested an independent review of this issue now that the article has been through a couple of rounds of edits and the discussion seems concluded. Ronz agreed with my suggestion that I post a request for someone in the Journalism Project to do the review. Many thanks to whomever might have the time to take a look. Cheers, BC1278 (talk) 21:23, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

I have revived the related Wikipedia:WikiProject Newspapers pages. Please join us! We are trying a top down approach by having the Lists of newspapers complete with a list for every country. The United States states and sovereign countries in Asia, South America, and Europe lists have completed lists to a first order with sourcing. We could use some help with a few countries in North America, Africa, Oceania, as well as states with limited recognition, dependencies, and other territories with newspapers. There are several U.S. states with extensive lists of current and defunct newspapers and articles on many notable newspapers, including List of newspapers in Washington, D.C., Newspapers founded in Washington, D.C. during the 18th- and 19th-centuries, List of newspapers in Minnesota and List of newspapers in North Carolina. Considerable progress has also been made on African American newspapers, also. Please join us and put Wikipedia:WikiProject Directory/Description/WikiProject Newspapers on your watch list.

How would a person find information about an e-edition?

I have a red link in an article about a newspaper and don't know where it should redirect to. The concept of E-edition might even be able to have its own article. A Google search will just give you e-editions of individual newspapers but it won't explain what that is or its history, although some of the results did have the explanation of what the individual newspaper's e-edition was, which is an online replica of what the newspaper looks like, or would look like. I say would look like because some newspapers have begun not publishing on a particular day or days of the week and instead are giving subscribers something online that looks like the newspaper would look if there was one on that day.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:49, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Impact of COVID-19 on journalism

Given that we have articles as specific as ones like Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on Disney, and that I haven't yet put in the time/been able to persuade others to expand the scope of Misinformation related to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic to include coverage of all aspects of information dissemination related to the virus (which would allow the article to more easily note things like newspapers lowering paywalls), I think it's past time we create Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on journalism. This would cover the financial struggles of newspapers, as already covering in places like 2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_the_United_States#Publishing, as well as how journalists have shifted the types of reporting they're doing, etc. It'll be linked from 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic in the "information dissemination" section (which is mostly misinformation, but does have a broader scope, unlike the misinfo article itself). A.G. Sulzberger updates

Resolved

Hello! On behalf of The New York Times Company as part of my work at Beutler Ink (I've disclosed my COI appropriately), I've proposed some updates to the entry for A.G. Sulzberger, who serves as publisher of The New York Times. One editor helped me to update the Providence Journal and The Oregonian subsections, as well as part of the New York Times subsection, but has asked for others to review the most recent request to update the second half of the New York Times subsection. In my request, I've outlined specific updates and proposed markup changes in my user space for easier copying and pasting. RE: Debate on creating a Chris Mullin disambiguation page (now it automatically leads to the basketball player)

Right now, the Chris Mullin page automatically leads to the basketball player - at the same time, there is a Chris Mullin (politician) - the one who led the fight to release the Birmingham Six and vote A Very British Coup (which was adapted to a TV series).

I've started a discussion on the talk page there, requesting to rename the basketball player page to Chris Mullin (basketball), and make the Chris Mullin page a disambiguation page with equal representation to both of them.

Arguments raised against my proposal:

  • The basketball player has more views.

My main argument for the move:

  • The basketball player gets most of his views from the US, while outside the US he's hardly known, and in Britain itself the politician-author Chris Mullin is much better known.

I invite you guys to take part in the discussion.

Hi, I did a draft for an article about Dr. Foucault Welles, a network scientist who studies behaviors on twitter. THe first try it got marked for speedy deletion due to copyright concerns (I am new to Wikipedia and didn't understand the rules) so I fixed it, and now I would like the big red message to go away. Can anyone help me/does anyone have any advice? I'm really stressed out about it. Thanks, Luvbug3158 (talk) 19:38, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

I'm fairly new here too, but I'm pretty sure you should ask this type of question at the Teahouse. Welcome and Good luck! Mollifiednow (talk) 21:28, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Luvbug3158, I tagged the draft with two issues that I'd suggest you address before trying to submit the page. The notability one is particularly important—if coverage of Dr. Welles does not exist that can establish that she meets the WP:NACADEMICS guideline, she will not be able to have a page. Once you've addressed those things, paste the code {{subst:Submit}} onto the top of the page, and it will be reviewed. Further information is at Help:Your first page, and as Luvbug mentioned, you are welcome to seek additional help at the Teahouse. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 23:09, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Feedback request

Hi. I know that I could ask this question at the Teahouse, however, I'd like to get feedback from WikiProject Journalism, since this is what I focus on.

I have expanded numerous articles, and think I'm on the right track, but I'm at a point where I could use some feedback on areas of improvement. For example: I just finished expanding the BLP for Chuck Neubauer and I'm having second thoughts on the subsection "Washington Times reporting". Have I added too much detail? If so, should I remove it?

I would really appreciate it if someone with more experience, could take the time and look at the article, or any of the articles that I have worked on (they're listed on my userpage). I'm looking for any advice on how I can improve on my contributions. To be clear, I'm not fishing for compliments, I really want to do a good job here, and care about what this project offers to its readers. Thanks, Mollifiednow (talk) 21:30, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi Mollifiednow! I just took a look and made a bunch of edits (mostly tweaks) to Neubauer's page that should give you an idea of potential improvements. Regarding the Washington Times section, yes, that seems like way too much detail. Unless the story is Watergate, it should really only have a paragraph or so in a biography article. And to the extent that we discuss the story, the topic needs to be the article itself, not the topic of the article. So don't just summarize the article with only the article itself as the reference. Instead, discuss how he went about reporting the article, what reactions or impact the article had, etc. If there's no discussion of the article in reliable sources, it probably doesn't warrant anything more than something like Neubauer wrote a report for The Washington Times raising ethical concerns about Diane Feinstein's husband allegedly profiting from the financial crisis. "Allegedly" is probably needed to be safe, given that The Washington Times is considered only marginally reliable. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 22:51, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Thanks so much for the input. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I'll go take a look at your changes, and go from there. As to the Washington Time, yep. ;-) The articles seem to have quite the hook, but on further reading, well, no need to say more... Thanks again! Mollifiednow (talk) 23:54, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Article Expansion

Hi. I just finished expanding an article, Lenoir Chambers. I had expanded on an earlier article about Louis Isaac Jaffe, who was at the same organization, and found the Chambers article needed expanding. Later, when I took a look at my stats page, I noticed the article on Chambers was listed as stub-class, however, there was no stub template on the article, and of course, nothing to remove. I thought someone might want to take a look-see at why. Thanks- Mollifiednow (talk) 00:44, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

More on my comment about the article (above), I looked at the talk page, and it is listed as a stub class article there. I'm still new to a lot of things here, should I delete it? Would that be in-line with what I can do at the level that I am? Sorry, I'm just not sure and it's difficult to know exactly what is okay to do at my experience level. I really wish there were a "Dummies" guide for this kind of stuff ;-) Mollifiednow (talk) 04:10, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Mollifiednow, I just reassessed the article to C-class. For future reference, you can reassess any article, including ones you're written/contributed to, up to B-class. More information is at Wikipedia:Content assessment; I definitely agree with you that I wish our documentation/instructions were better! {{u|Sdkb}}talk 23:03, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Thank you! I didn't realize that I was able to do so. I will take the time to go read, and learn. I appreciate your quick response. Have a great day.Mollifiednow (talk) 23:16, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Sorry, I have another question. I started going back to the articles that I expanded and revising the stub tags, (most will be start class). I'm only changing the rating on journalism templates. Am I correct in assuming that other WikiProjects are responsible for their own ratings? Thanks in advance for your help.Mollifiednow (talk) 02:27, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

Mollifiednow, sorry, just seeing this now. When I reassess a page, I typically change the rating for all projects, not just the one that brought me to the page. Most projects aren't active enough to be regularly reassessing pages, so I chalk up differences to the fact that the page may have changed since it was last assessed. Eventually, I hope that every page will just have one assessment, rather than a bunch from individual WikiProjects. It's hard enough to keep 6 million ratings up to date, let alone 6 million * the average number of tags on each page. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 23:11, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

No problem :) I think I'm sensible enough to change the others as well, unless, of course, I'm not permitted to at my level(?) as an editor. If it's ok, let me know. I have a list of maybe 100 biographies, and don't mind going back and updating others. Best-Mollifiednow (talk) 23:44, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

There are some parts of Wikipedia that are highly developed, where it's better to stick your toes in gently to avoid messing anything up. As I alluded a bit above, article assessment is absolutely not one of them; it's very much in need of attention. So go ahead and re-assess as you see fit, and don't let the prior assessments (which might be years out of date) be an obstacle. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 23:57, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Great. Will do. I appreciate the "toe-dipping" analogy, trust me, I've been stepping lightly, I had one bad experience when I first arrived at the Wikiverse; I'm trying very hard not to step on anyone's toes again. ;-) I'll go back through the articles that I've expanded on and do my best. If someone wants to revert, they can have at it. Thanks again for helping me. I try to look for answers on my own, but it's good to be able to ask a question of someone more experienced, if I need to. Incorrect Redirect?

Some time ago, when I first joined, I found some discrepancies between two articles: George Ticknor (journalist) and another George Ticknor. The journalist article was deleted.

I was just going through my contributions list, updating class ratings on articles that I had expanded/improved on. I found the journalist Ticknor, (mentioned above) and clicked the link; it redirects to The Keene Sentinel.

If I recall correctly, Ticknor & Sons held part ownership in the Sentinel for a short period of time, but not this journalist; he is not mentioned in the article, which makes me think the redirect is an error. I'm not sure, maybe there is a reason for the redirect, but I wanted to bring it to the attention of someone who knows more about these things. Mollifiednow (talk) 02:12, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

Mollifiednow, it looks like Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/George Ticknor (journalist) resulted in consensus to redirect to the Sentinel, with the redirect tagged with {{r to related topic}}. Generally, we try not to make redirects to pages that don't mention the term being redirected from, but in this case I think it's okay, since the Sentinel's page is a start class article at best, but if it were more fully developed it presumably would mention Ticknor somewhere as part of a comprehensive history section. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 03:04, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

Got it. Thanks for the explanation. I'll make some time to work on the Sentinel article, since I'm aware of the situation now. ;-) Mollifiednow (talk) 03:17, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

Oh my, I am embarrassed now that I see mention of him in the article, as I take another look at it this morning. Apologies. Mollifiednow (talk) 13:51, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

I've started an RfC on the acceptability of a source and would greatly appreciate it if a few editors who are familiar with how industry topic-specific Trade Media in the modern journalism landscape gets sorted might choose to join the conversation. Tidying up and updating the Ezra Klein article

I have noticed that article on Ezra Klein is well below Wikipedia standards. I did my best to amend the lede and beginning of the article but the main body is still disorganized, non-chronological, outdated, and poorly-sourced in parts. Could somebody from this group please help solve this? Further yet, could you adopt it as a group project?

Klein is one of the most influential journalists in the United States among Democratic politicians at the moment and this article not only does a disservice to him but it's poor quality reflects poorly on this website as a whole. I recommend we take action on it. Cosmopolismetropolis (talk) 00:02, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Please contribute to a discussion at Talk:The New York Times International Edition. Recently, an editor started a new article at International Herald Tribune, which had previously been a redirect to The New York Times International Edition. The former is the pre-2013 name of the latter; Wikipedia's NYT International Edition article includes the history of this newspaper through several name changes back to its Paris Herald days. Thoughts of WP:Journalism participants are welcome. ``` t b w i l l i e ` $1.25 ` 21:20, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Two articles. The International Herald Tribune is listed in the Library of Congress https://www.loc.gov/item/sn94021607/ Based on that combined with other references, it would appear to merit its own Wikipedia entry. For example, the International Herald Tribune has its own chapter in the robust six-volume "Encyclopedia of Journalism" which covers all significant dimensions of journalism and history. https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/encyclopedia-of-journalism/book226164

Anil Bhoyrul

I came across an attempt to whitewash the ..."colourful"... history of British journalist Anil Bhoyrul which includes a conviction for buying shares ahead of tipping them in the Daily Mirror and writing lies about Conrad Black in the Sunday Express. He's since forged a new life in Dubai and has just set up a new media company there, so it's perhaps no surprise that somebody is trying to rewrite his article. Of course that's just a red rag to a bull, so I've rewritten it to not far off WP:GA standard as far as I can with publicly-available sources, there's just a few things that need filling in like the basic bio stuff of education, birthplace, wife's maiden name etc. I imagine that as a prominent editor of business magazines in the mid-90s his fall was given extensive coverage by his rivals. So if anyone has access to British newspaper archives of that time, I imagine there will be profiles and more detail on eg exactly how he came to leave BusinessAge the second time, which looks like it was a result of Owen Oyston having to sell his media interests after being jailed for rape, but I haven't found a source that says so definitively. He's not the most significant figure ever, but having got this far it would be nice to fill in some of those bits and get it to WP:GAN. Even if you can't help on the article, it would be useful to have a few more eyes watching it for further attempts to whitewash it. Le Deluge (talk) 09:51, 4 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello. I see that the currentle article is not so bad, but still a start up and so am waving it under the nose of projects I thought it would fall under in the hopes that more active contributors might add to it/fix it/etc. IMHO (talk) 22:37, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Why only Publisher, Owner, and Editor in the infobox for newspapers?

A question - in working on updating some of the articles for newspapers published in Vermont, I noticed that the infoboxes almost always have only Owner, Publisher, Editor. However, in most newspapers there are usually multiple editors. Sometimes a Managing Editor or an Executive Editor, or sometimes a News Editor or a section editor (ex. Sports Editor). Is there a particular convention or rationale for limiting the infobox to just having these three positions? Is there any reason NOT to include additional editors, for instance? (Realizing that Wikipedia is not a directory, but also realizing that a newspaper is the product of so many more people than just those top three positions.) - Dyork (talk) 20:54, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Dyork, we generally only include the top positions for any organization. There's no firm standard about who those people are or a specific number of them. But per WP:INDISCRIMINATE, if you're listing more than four people, you're probably listing positions that aren't really at the top. Having those increases the maintenance burden (since people change jobs frequently), and as you note, it's not really our job to provide a directory. Only the very top people at an organization have enough influence over it to rise to an encyclopedic level. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 01:38, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
@Dyork: To expand on what Sdkb said, the reason these three positions are usually sufficient for a newspaper infobox is because these are the three "where the buck stops" positions in most newspapers. The owner is, well, the owner. He, she or it can make drastic changes, shut down the newspaper or fire any particular employee. The publisher is the person who bears legal responsibility for the contents of the paper, and is the "CEO" of the newspaper as a business operation. The decisions of an advertising director or circulation manager can be appealed to a publisher; the decisions of a publisher on these matters are final. But in most cases, the publisher is not involved in day-to-day oversight of the newsgathering and publishing organization; here, it's the chief editor (sometimes known as executive editor, or some similar title) who has the final say. The decisions of a sports editor or photo chief can be appealed to the executive editor; the decisions of the executive editor (on news matters, in most well-respected 20th-21st century American newspapers, at least) are final. ``` t b w i l l i e ` $1.25 ` 03:43, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

There is discussion at WT:Notability of removing WP:NMEDIA from the SNG sidebar because it is an explanatory supplement, not a guideline. Greetings, I put a draft of something on the late Manila columnist Jose Guevara:

Draft:Jose_Guevara

However, its AfC request has been marked decline. It is too thin to move into mainspace as it is, and I don't have the background or the access to media to fill this out. A few more paragraphs on the man and some more references would be a good thing. He was one of the Philippines' best-known and most trenchant columnists, on the level of Mike Royko or Bill Safire for that market. But there's just not much online to demonstrate notability. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Wikifact

Hello. I would like to share a vision for a real-time fact-checking resource: Wikifact. I hope that the project is of some interest to those who contribute to Wikipedia in this journalism portal.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikifact

In the not-too-distant future, it may become possible for end-users to fact-check arbitrary portions of documents in word processors and Web browsers simply by selecting content, using context menus, and making use of crowdsourced, collaborative resources such as Wikifact. Splitting the editorial board content off the Wall Street Journal article

Recently a child article of the Wall Street Journal article was created around the paper's editorial board [3]. I think this is a split that could use some review. Please see the discussion here [4]. Springee (talk) 01:27, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

The Points Guy - update assistance

I suggested a few updates for The Points Guy here Talk:The_Points_Guy#Proposed_Updates_to_Article to help fix the article (missing sources, outdated information, etc.). I’d edit the page myself, but have declared a COI. Is someone from this project able to review the suggestions and update the article accordingly? Thanks.Cheergirl325 (talk) 15:36, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Alden Global Capital versus Digital First Media

Digital First Media (DFM) is the official name of the media/newspaper-publishing division of Alden Global Capital. We have an article on each entity. Increasingly, though, when comment is made on this company, the only name used is Alden Global Capital. Here's an example from the New York Times from October 6, 2022. The gist of the story in the New York Times is that "Publications owned by the hedge fund Alden Global Capital, the second-largest newspaper publisher in the country, will no longer endorse major political candidates in their opinion pages." That's a decision about editorial content, obviously. Nowhere in the NYT article does the phrase "Digital First Media" appear. Looking through Google search results over the last year for "Digital First Media", it doesn't get many. (Alden Global gets a lot.) I'm not 100% sure where to go with this, but there doesn't seem to be much point in elaborating within the Digital First Media article about this new editorial policy. Just looking for some guidance on this perplexing situation. Novellasyes (talk) 18:33, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Need some help at: Visegrád 24

Visegrád 24 is one of the Twitter accounts that have become wildly popular in the wake of the Rus-Ukr war. There seems to be a lot of mystery in how it's run. The current article is some...what? of a start, but it's not quite in shape yet. This paywalled Polish article might be promising based on the limited text preview.
