The Gizmos[edit]

Although the 1970s Indiana rock group is in Wikipedia as "The Gizmos", a variety of contemporary sources, including All Music Guide, Trouser Press, and (I believe) the record sleeves in the 1970s indicated the group's name was actually "Gizmos". Now the CD is sold as being by "The Gizmos" but the name the group had when actually together seems more appropriate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.99.245.196 (talkcontribs) 14:30, July 11 2011

Township naming convention[edit]

Our articles about Indiana townships are currently named using the Township, County, State form — e.g., Adams Township, Allen County, Indiana. However, a recent discussion at the Village Pump found consensus for moving township articles instead to Township, State wherever possible.

For a few different reasons I think Indiana should be an exception and should keep the Township, County, State form, but I wanted to invite others to share their opinions and see if there's consensus to keep the current form. (If not, Indiana township articles are likely to be renamed in the near future.) Thanks for any input/comments! ╠╣uw [talk] 12:07, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW here's my take: The main reason I think the current form works best is because Indiana has a remarkably large amount of repetition in its township names, so much so that the great majority would still need to keep the county name no matter what (for disambiguation). Over 70% of Indiana townships — 707 out of 1008 — have names that are repeated at least once, and some are repeated an amazing number of times: there are 47 Jackson Townships; 46 Washingtons; 35 Unions, 28 Jeffersons, etc. Since most need the county anyway, showing the county for all produces a set that's more consistent and predictable in form.

Identifying a township just as Township, State without reference to its county also doesn't seem to be common in reliable sources as far as I can see, again probably due to the fact that it simply wouldn't make sense in a state where so few township names are unique. ╠╣uw [talk] 12:18, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On first thought, I would have agreed that the naming of Indiana township articles should be kept as they are now, given the overwhelming duplication of names. However, given that the "township, county, state" entries will be retained as redirects, I don't think the change will actually cause any significant problems and will be consistent with place name conventions in general. I assume the articles for all existing Indiana townships have already been created and it's highly unlikely that any new townships will be created, so we're talking about ease of finding a particular township article, which the redirects will handle.
