Criticism at International Justice Mission
Hi, I'm Sterling, of International Justice Mission. I've been part of a discussion on the how to best handle the article's Criticism section. Back in May, I posted a request for comment, and the consensus was for details from Criticism to be incorporated throughout the article. I then posted this edit request to continue to conversation. But since then, there has not been much movement toward incorporating criticism throughout the article, nor has anyone come forward with another solution. Lever Brothers
Seeking assistance with the Lever Brothers article. Lever Brothers is a company that extensively used forced labor in the Belgian Congo. There is a request for comment here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Lever_Brothers The dispute involves an another editor who shows no interest in reviewing references deleting large amounts of information from the article, seemingly at random. - On my talk page someone left a comment stating, "Stop spamming your proposed content all over the place and read WP:CANVASS. Also, do not create RFCs with invalid opening statements." This seems to confirm my fears that I may be blocked soon just for disagreeing with people on talk pages. If that happens I hope someone will talk to me on my talk page. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.

Consent search and Terry stop (stop and frisk)
Hello, I would like to lobby your WikiProject to add Consent search and Stop and frisk (which redirects to Terry stop, the technical term) to your project. Both are major drivers in racial profiling and police abuse. A good example is in the following LA Times story: "L.A. County deputies stopped thousands of innocent Latinos on the 5 Freeway in hopes of their next drug bust".[1] Other examples are: Stop-and-frisk in New York City and Ferguson unrest (caused by a terry stop, community exploded because of heavy-handed use of terry stops and consent searches). Proposed article moves for "Grace Gao"
There's a proposed series of article moves around a couple of women called Grace Gao (one is a badminton player, the other a human rights activist). Grace Gao (human rights activist) is a new article and I thought people here might in interested in joining the discussion. Basically, as it says in the opening to the proposition, the move would be 'Grace Gao → Grace Gao (badminton):
There are two articles about people called Grace Gao, neither of which, it seems, have priority over the other in terms of which should be "primary topic". Moving the content of this article to "Grace Gao (badminton)" (following article naming conventions: e.g., Michelle Li (badminton)) would distinguish the Grace Gao this article refers to from Grace Gao (human rights activist) — with Grace Gao (disambiguation) enabling people to find which Grace Gao they are looking for. This would be following similar precedent of, for example, Alexandra Bruce (badminton); Michael Fuchs (badminton); Kevin Li (badminton); Michelle Li (badminton) [all of which have corresponding disambiguation pages].

The page describes violence by combatants. If you accept such limitations, please change the name. Generally any wartime violence includes crimes committed also by non-combatants. There are plenty of sources describing Nazi violence.Xx236 (talk) 09:48, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

New Article on Enslaved Women Resistance
Hello all. I was reading the Enslaved Women in the United States article and noticed it could use some improvement. I will be updating this article, as well as creating a new article discussing the ways enslaved women resisted slavery, namely through the use of abortion, infanticide, and contraception. I will be providing historical context of how African women were chosen by Europeans for slavery, the sexualization of African women, and the expectations of African women to provide manual and sexual labor to propagate enslaved populations. Caste-based prostitution
An article caste-based prostitution was removed, to be redirected to prostitution in india, where any mention of prostitution revolving around caste was also removed. The section mentioning about it in child sexual abuse and child prostitution was also removed by the same users, with reasons given that vary each time it is put back. The topic is about villages of certain caste groups that revolve around prostitution of females, often groomed from a young age and it cites The Guardian and Al Jazeera. Reopening the conversation on Trumpism and fascism

I know that this is a well worn and controversial topic, but in light of the shift described in the recent article "The Debate Over the Word Fascism Takes a New Turn" by Jennifer Szalai in The New York Times,[1] I wonder it may be possible reopen the discussion in a civil and productive way. While a definitive statement identifying Trumpism with fascism may not be advisable, a section in List_of_fascist_movements detailing the controversy, and the fact that notable mainstream historians, philosophers and political scientists have come around over time (especially in light of recent events) to viewing the term as a useful description, seems to me appropriate. Editors who watchlist the article Scientific racism might be interested in looking at the related article Race and intelligence, which has been an area of contentious debate and edit-warring. (It is currently locked down for 3 days.) While Scientific racism is, I think, a good example of how Wikipedia handles fringe, the article Race and intelligence has a very different tone and content, as is clear from the first paragraph of the lede. See also Race and intelligence#The Jensenism debates. I'm putting this notice on all the WikiProjects that list Scientific racism as of high importance, in the hope that more editors will participate in discussions at Talk:Race and intelligence and help make the article compliant with WP:NPOV and WP:FRINGE. Following discussion at prisoners of conscience we have hived off a list at List of designated prisoners of conscience. The list contains historic accounts sometimes of peops who barely spent 24 hours behind bars. I've struggled to parse the existing List. North Korea of Africa: whitewashing human rights violations and war crimes
This pair of edits by me inserting a minimum of sourced information updating the history section of the Eritrea article was removed in this edit.
I think that some uninvolved editors might be interested in Talk:Eritrea#Whitewashing human rights violations and war crimes to see whether the "North Korea of Africa" related articles need some attention (Human Rights Concern Eritrea: Is Eritrea the North Korea of Africa?; The Economist: Why Eritrea is called Africa's North Korea) It seems that one particular user doesn't even want to accept NPOVing the population estimates of Eritrea (scroll up at the Eritrea talk page).
A related issue is that it seems that readers of the Eritrean Defence Forces (EDF) article are, according to one user, not allowed to know that the EDF is, according to an overwhelming variety of sources, heavily involved in the Tigray War, unless they happen to already know that. Hello. I've been a long time absent contributor, but recently heard an interview with Jonathan Wells, the author of The Kidnapping Club: Wall Street, Slavery, and Resistance on the Eve of the Civil War on the subject of his book, which included Mr. Ruggles, as he wrote a contemporary artcile on the subject in the early 19th century. I see that the currentle article is not so bad, but still a start up and so am waving it under the nose of projects I thought it would fall under in the hopes that more active contributors might add to it/fix it/etc. IMHO (talk) 22:38, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

I spent a bit of my time to figure out all of the countries that dont have an article for their human rights. There are many more territories / low population countries that also dont have a human rights article, but those don't necessarily need to be made. (this is ordered by population of the country, high to low) Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Slovenia, Guinea-Bissau, Kosovo, Mauritius, Guyana, Montenegro, Belize, The Bahamas. Wikipedia Primary School invitation for sexism

On behalf of the teams behind the Wikipedia Primary School research project, I would like to announce that the article sexism was selected a while ago to be reviewed by an external expert. Unfortunately, the expert who had agreed to review had to decline later on. Our first call for community review was already 6 months ago and since then the article has changed quite a lot. We have identified another expert to help review the articles. We would like to ask interested editors to join our efforts and improve the article before October 31, 2015 (any timezone) as they see fit.
A revision will be then sent to the designated expert for review. Any notes and remarks written by the external expert will be made available on the talk pages under a CC-BY-SA license as soon as possible, so that you can read them, discuss them and then decide if and how to use them. IHL and human wave attacks/cannon fodder
Does international humanitarian law say anything about cannon fodder/human wave attacks? Common sense says that within the context in which some military actions are considered ethically justified, if soldiers are conscripted, or motivated by propaganda to hate "the other" so much that they don't care dying in massive numbers, and used as cannon fodder/in human wave attacks, then the commanders responsible are ethically unjustified unless the military gains "are worth it" - depending on whatever ethical criteria decide on "worth it". I'm wondering if there's any international humanitarian law (i.e. Geneva conventions and more recent international legal instruments and legal precedents) that defines this situation as a war crime or some "lesser" crime in relation to war? Human wave attack doesn't list any wars more recent than the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s; it seems like the Tigray War is going to be appropriate to add to the list (unfortunately). @Efekadu: You might be interested in this aspect of the Tigray War. I haven't noticed many sources, but there do seem to be a few sources arguing that one or both (or all) sides have used cannon fodder/human wave tactics. Nobody on this talk page seems to know if the killing of "semi-"combatants - in the cannon fodder sense - would count as a war crime or not, so this info wouldn't be justified in the war crimes in the Tigray War page. Probably the casualties of the Tigray War page would make sense. The text from Alex de Waal that you removed was, as you pointed out, irrelevant to that particular page, but the info as such seems notable - especially with de Waal being a notable researcher on the topic. User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
