Rastafari userbox

The only current userbox for those users that identify themselves as rastafari, or take an avid interest in the religion (like myself) is:

This user is a Rastafarian.

Clearly, this userbox is poor. Being that the Lion of Judah is the common symbol for Rastafarianism, I propose a UBox with the Lion of Judah ([1]) most likely cropped around the lion. Please create two: 1 for those interested, and one for Rastafari.

Done see Template:User Rastafarian which will allow both believers and the interested. I basically took stylistics from the version you linked to. Examples are User Rastafarian and which produce:
This user is a Rastafarian.

and

This user is interested in the Rastafari movement.
respectively. Adam McCormick (talk) 02:54, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Date parameter for split templates

I would like to have the Split, Split-apart, Splitsection and Splitsections templates have the date parameter added to them. The merge templates have this function so why not the split templates? -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 02:18, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

I think that the reason Merge has the date param is that it sorts things into date-based categories. There are no dated categories for the split templates, although they can be created. Do you want this done as well (otherwise adding the date param does nothing, really!). RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 06:15, June 3, 2008 (UTC)
I do want the date parameter so that the articles can be split into date categories like the merge template. It seem like a good way of ordering any backlog. Older article can then be given priority over newer ones. Over time the current backlog of 800 odd articles will be done and all new articles to be split will have their own date category. I had a try at doing the date parameter on the split template but I could not get it to work. I have reverted my little experiment. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 07:15, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Although adding such a feature would be easy, I feel that wider consensus is probably needed for this, as it will affect quite a lot of pages, and create lots of new categories. It may be a good idea to raise a thread on the talk page of the template in question, or (probably better) the village pump. If/when a consensus is reached, I can implement the date categorisation. (I think that this is an excellent idea and will in all probability support such a proposal!). RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 18:22, June 3, 2008 (UTC)
I will raise the request at the village pump but I feel the the change is minor and so consensus does not need to be sought. The date parameter is optional and all it is doing is sorting articles into date categories as previously mentioned. I don't think the number of new categories would be large - Category:Merge by month only has 15 subcats. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 22:22, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Prodigy Userbox

Could someone make a userbox for fans of The Prodigy? Thanks. I suggest using the image with the band in front of a white star as a picture. It's on google and i dont think it's copyrighted. . . .

Do you mean this one? If so, it is copyrighted – the bottom of the page says "© 2005 Australian Broadcasting Corporation" --JD554 (talk) 15:03, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Merging - broaden scope?

I'm copying this from template talk:merging. Hopefully it's clear what I mean. Richard001 (talk) 01:57, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

The template merging should simply say that the page in question is being merged with another. That the one in question is being merged into another article should be an option, but there is no template for the other case where the article in question is the one the other is being merged into (i.e. it is the destination). I think it should be kept as a single template, with the option of adding something to identify which of the two situations applies to a given article. Richard001 (talk) 08:40, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Done I've made the change so that this template generically states "This is being merged with that" or with the dir parameter "This is being merged to that" for dir=to or "This is being merged with content from That" for dir=from. Is that what you were looking for? Adam McCormick (talk) 14:24, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Precisely. Cheers. Richard001 (talk) 10:26, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

(Another request already!) I would like to modify Audio requested so that it can place articles within a more specific audio requests category. This year a category Category:Wikipedia requested audio of animals was created, but I can't place material in here using this template as I could with the Photo requested template (e.g. animals puts the request in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of animals. I want to do this for the article mimicry, where audio of animal auditory mimicry is requested. Richard001 (talk) 10:35, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

 •  Done, parameters 1, 2 and 3 are now available for this purpose (param 1 is also used for the text). I haven't created any categories as I am not sure which ones are necessary/useful. RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 18:59, June 9, 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for that, Richard. On a related topic, is there any way to include a category like Category:Mammal articles needing photos using reqphoto? It only seems to accept something that follows 'Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of...' I need to be able to override this (see Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of mammals, which should be empty, and also my section above).

Definitely  Possible. I'll look into it, and the above section, and see what I can do. RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 20:22, June 10, 2008 (UTC)
I've brought it up on the talk page (discussion here) as the template is fully protected, therefore an admin will need to make the edit. I have suggested what sort of thing may work, you may want to have a look and comment/correct me. RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 22:08, June 10, 2008 (UTC)
 Done Edit made, parameters added. RichardΩ612 Ɣ ɸ 21:37, June 20, 2008 (UTC)

Infobox for breeds

Resolved
 – §hep¡Talk to me! 20:36, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Could someone set up an infobox similar to taxobox for breeds of animals? i.e. taxobox works for chicken, but does not work for Buckeye chicken. I guess I'm looking for a general version of Infobox Dogbreed. Any ideas? Thanks! §hep¡Talk to me! 21:16, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

You might have a look at/clone Infobox Cultivar - it's intended for plants but might be quite close to what you want? FlagSteward (talk) 17:21, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll mess with that. §hep¡Talk to me! 18:48, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
I have the template pretty much finished at User:Stepshep/Sandbox/1, but I can't get the bottom two sections to collapse and have to floating {{#if | 's in there. Could someone please see what I messed up with? Thanks! §hep¡Talk to me! 19:54, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Mammals template

The mammals project has a template mammal that has a photo-request function (needs-photo=yes) but it isn't showing up on the banner when added (see e.g. talk:stotting, where it is used but isn't showing up or adding the article to the requests category, hence the need to use reqphoto. Could someone take a look at it and try to figure out why it isn't working? Richard001 (talk) 02:39, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

The options needs-photo, needs-taxobox and needs-audio should now be working. Hope this helps, Gazimoff WriteRead 01:24, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Bahrain national barnstar

To add to the list at [2]. I wanted to reward a user that has made good edits on Bahrain-related articles, and I had to use the generic national merit one. Is this the correct place to ask someone to make the barnstar including the barnstar image? Alternatively, a "arabic" barnstar with that thing used on the head by tuaregs , see frontal image, in order to have a generic arabic culture barnstar --Enric Naval (talk) 23:46, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Would Image:Coat of arms of Bahrain.svg work for the image? If so I'll work something up. Adam McCormick (talk) 02:30, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Edit warring block template

If there isn't one already, I just need a simple template that reads: "You have been blocked for edit warring for X [hours/days/weeks]. If you wish to contest this block, please use the unblock template." - Is that possible? Or have I come to the wrong place? Thanks in advance for any help. ScarianCall me Pat! 23:31, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Have you tried uw-3block? Stifle (talk) 12:56, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Naw, it needs to specifically say "edit warring" as sometimes you don't block an editor for 3RR. It would kinda save the trouble of explaining when editors say: "I didn't violate 3RR". ScarianCall me Pat! 13:10, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Done I've created uw-ewblock in order to meet this request. Gazimoff WriteRead 23:01, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Template Help

(again) HS Conference leaves a nice giant whitespace at the top of the articles it's on. See Classic Lake Conference for an example. The only way I can get the space gone is to put the lead text above the infobox. Could someone here cleanup the code and remove the top whitespace? Thanks! §hep¡Talk to me! 00:14, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Done Problem was trailing whitespace, I've removed it. Adam McCormick (talk) 00:26, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Talk page template requesting pictures be added to the article

There's a lot of ambiguity with the picture request templates (reqphoto, reqimage etc), though they seem to be primarily or exclusively for upload requests, not requests to (locate and) add existing or probably existing pictures to articles. I have tried to get this clarified but with little luck; we don't have nearly enough people active in an organized effort to work on images. Perhaps a different template that simply asks people to add images to a pictureless or picture-short page, regardless of what sort (drawings, photos, diagrams... it's very difficult to make a general request like this too because reqimage wants you to use a different template!) would be useful. We use the term wikify, so I think a similar neologism like 'picturify' would be appropriate to describe this process. Perhaps a template picturify could be added to talk pages saying something like "this article has few or no images; please try to locate and add some to improve its quality", and perhaps a note like "note: not all pages should have images; images must be relevant to the subject and should not be added just for the sake of having images". Maybe it should all be kept within one template, but what we have at the moment is not very apt to what I often need, and they can always be merged again later. I'm not sure if it should categorize the page; perhaps something like 'pages needing picturification' (see Category:Articles that need to be wikified would be appropriate but that could also be added later. Richard001 (talk) 02:20, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Possible I think that the whole reason that reqimage is deprecated is that it just doesn't accomplish anything to same "put something here," you might as well say "make this better." I have no doubt that it is possible but I don't know if it would be a value-added change. Adam McCormick (talk) 02:55, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
well, it might be 'value added' to create a template that can suggest particular types of pictures to be sought out. for instance, it would be easy to add a parameter or two to Reqimageother to get It is requested that an image be included in this article to improve its quality, if possible. images of {blah}, {bleh}, {blech} and {blurch} would be particularly useful. would something like that work? --Ludwigs2 21:44, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
It's not about requesting a specific type of image, it's about highlighting the fact that the article is in a state of image-drought and ought to have some images (some articles don't need any at all, because of the subject matter). An example is Darwin from Insectivorous plants to Worms - there are certainly suitable images available to be added, and it would improve the article, it just takes a bit of work to find them and include them in the article (which a passerby that has no involvement with the article may not want to/be able to do). It should be pretty obvious but this sort of thing just doesn't seem to occur to a lot of people, and hence the article remains without images for a long time. Richard001 (talk) 00:50, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
well... maybe an appeal to bribery - a kind of "pictures for barnstars" approach? I'll see what I can whip up, and then you can critique it - lol. --Ludwigs2 04:57, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

how does this mock up look to you? two parameters ('types' - types of pictures desired and 'barnstarer' - person offering barnstars for pics). need to clean it up a little and add in the category connector before I put it in as an actual template, but... --Ludwigs2 21:12, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

There is the m:Philip Greenspun illustration project, which actually does 'bribe' people to create images. I don't know that the barnstar thing is the best idea, but apart from that it's basically what I had in mind. I would suggest wording something like "Images may be found at Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. If it is clear that none are available locally, reqimage should be used." Parameters should be optional, of course. Also, it might be best to link to Wikipedia:Images rather than digital image. Richard001 (talk) 23:31, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

ok, I've made the changes and moved the template over into template space - you can access it at pictify. I may play with it a little more (I can almost get it to do an initial search when you specify a type - just some URL encoding problems). let me know if there's anything else you want modified or changed. --Ludwigs2 00:53, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Better name for Template:Decimal2Base

I've made a template that converts a decimal number to a given base, up to base 36. Examples: 10111 EA 1Z. The only problem is the name, I would like to find a better name for it. I didn't know where to put this, if you know of a better place feel free to move it. Thank you -- Jkasd 21:25, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't think that name is a problem, but it definitely needs documentation. Adam McCormick (talk) 21:40, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
I've added the documentation, I still hope a better name can be found, but the current name will do. Jkasd 22:09, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
you could try "10toN", though I don't know if that actually constitutes better. sorry, base conversion templates don't lend themselves to cool, sexy titles... --Ludwigs2 23:26, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Template:editsemiprotected

(I keep wanting this and reinventing the wheel. It is, of course, cribbed heavily from Template:editprotected. 71.41.210.146 (talk) 12:16, 14 July 2008 (UTC))

It is requested that an edit be made to this semi-protected page (see protection log).

This template should only be used when followed by a specific description of the request.

The edit may be made by any autoconfirmed user. Replace the editsemiprotected template with editsemiprotected when the request has been accepted or rejected.

Usage

Place editsemiprotected on a talk page to request an edit of the corresponding article page. It should be accompanied by a clear and specific description of the requested change. Providing the new sentences or code in your request, that may be copied directly into the page, will expedite the process.

Recommended action upon resolution

Once a request is handled, it's best to leave the editsemiprotected tag as an un-transcluded tag by changing it to, for example, editsemiprotected. This removes the message box from the talk page and removes the talk page from the category, while still leaving a record of the request.

Done but remember that there is no process behind this so it's up to you to encourage its use or it will be deleted. Adam McCormick (talk) 00:58, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Template:expert-subject-multiple

See: Template_talk:Expert-subject#Multiple_WikiProjects.3B_talk_page_link.3B_... Recently had to reinvent the wheel at Marcus Livius Drusus Claudianus with some help of the code left at the first link. --87.154.0.103 (talk) 13:32, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Done. There's a mock up at expert-subject-multiple that will allow for five projects in a two-column bulleted list. Let me know if you'd rather have some other format. Adam McCormick (talk) 20:00, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks so far, but I'm still not getting it done properly as you can see in Marcus Livius Drusus Claudianus. If I write it like this (Ancient Rome), the Portal:Ancient Rome itself is not properly recognized and instead a re-direct in brackets is added. If I write it as Ancient Rome Portal or Portal:Ancient Rome instead, it doesn't even find the proper re-direct. Also it would be great if the template would either add WikiProject: or Portal: itself in the final display, or the editor themselves would be forced to add those. Also, I've added this new template at Wikipedia:Template_messages/Cleanup#Expert_needed, so you might add the obligatory explanatory sentence on syntax below it. --87.154.18.30 (talk) 22:24, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

"Comments" section disappearing from album boxes

Hi. I asked this at VP (Technical) and was pointed over here. :) In attempting to implement the new "C" grading into the existing album boxes, I'm finding that the "comments" subpage is disappearing. Here's one example, with comments subpage showing and without. The only change to the box was that "B" was altered to "C". I'm pretty useless with templates. I had a look at the coding, here, and thought that the problem might be so simple as adding " C | c |" to BOTTOM_TEXT (here). However, that didn't seem to do it in my first test, and being scared to death of templates I figured I'd better revert and ask for help. I kind of wonder now if I just panicked too quickly, but I'm not about to monkey around with it. (And especially now that I know why these are protected.) I'd appreciate it if somebody can help figure out why this is not working and, if possible, fix it so that it is. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:17, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Done Moonriddengirl - no, you had it right. I'm not sure why it didn't work in your test, because it worked fine in mine. I'll ask to have it edited in on the template page. --Ludwigs2 17:29, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. :) I don't know why it didn't work in my test; somebody suggested there might be a lag in implementation. In any event, as I said, those things unnerve me. I feel much better when somebody who understands them helps out! :D --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:25, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
my pleasure. but don't let templates scare you - just be careful to experiment in your user space so that mistakes you make don't temporarily muck up all of wikipedia.  :-) --Ludwigs2 22:18, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikinews move?

I just ran across Origami Airplane Launched From Space, which really belongs in Wikinews. Is there much demand for a Copy to Wikinews template? If not, how do I propose that it be moved? Thanks - Her Pegship (tis herself) 21:22, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

there are 'move' type templates for other wikiprojects, so I suppose there ought to be one for wikinews, as well. I'll take a look - if I can make one easily enough I'll do it. we can always delete it later if it seems senseless. --Ludwigs2 23:02, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
it makes sense, although it might be worth having a chat with the people at Wikiproject Transwiki for their thoughts, as there might be some tools/processes that they can build to support this for you. Ludwigs, shout if you'd like a hand with the template. Hope this helps, Gazimoff WriteRead 23:05, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
(whoops! edit) this is the heading on the Sister Projects template page, here: "Moving pages to Wikinews is not possible, for legal reasons. Copying material to Wikinews would put it under the CC-BY license, which violates the GFDL." so it looks like this template is not a possibility at all. I assume that the article is already covered in Wikinews, however, so you might want to use one of the templates on the link above to link the article over. --Ludwigs2 23:10, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

User page COI templates

As far as I could tell, this is the place to ask....

Anyway, I think that there should be a template that people who have a COI could put on their user page to say the topic area of the COI, why there is a COI (most likely who or what the user is associated with that creates the COI), and that they read the various COI pages and suggestions for dealing with COIs (and maybe even that they will not edit articles pertaining to their COI).

If this isn't the right place, let me know and I'll comment there. Thanks. --ThomasOwens (talk) 18:09, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

this is not difficult to make, but I'm failing to see the advantage a template would have over, say, a userbox or a simple html declaration. templates are most useful for task or texts that get repeated over and over; I don't see that happening here. maybe if you gave a clearer example? or if you'd just like something for you own page, I could help you with that as well... --Ludwigs2 20:35, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
Sounds like you want something for disclosure of a connection to a subject that might be construed as a conflict of interest when editing an article. I agree with Ludwigs2— a userbox or simple statement is probably best. For example: User:Gadget850/about is not just bragging, it also shows my areas of expertise and discloses potential conflicts. custom userboxes are simple. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 20:56, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Sandbox / Article in Development

This might exist, but if it does, I couldn't find it. I'm looking for a template that I can put on an article in my sandbox that I'm working on for Wikipedia, but at this time it is not in the main namespace and does not necessarily meet any/all of Wikipedia's specifications for inclusion. I want this so if someone stumbles across my article somehow, they can't get the impression that it's accurate/stable/ready for public consumption. Thanks. ThomasOwens (talk) 13:43, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

I think you want UserWorkInProgress. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 14:17, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Any chance of a version of Template:Possible_article that doesn't say "Please do not edit this page unless you created it, instead create your own." I'm thinking there might be a call for one that says "Please feel free to edit this page or leave comments on the talk page associated with it."
Done I've added a parameter called 'edit'. just use to get what you want. let me know if you want any other tweaks. --Ludwigs2 19:46, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

New template needed : List of Largest urban areas in India by Population

This template can be a list based on the list of contiguous urban areas of the world ordered according to population as of 2008. 3, this ideally should be part of the demographics section of the article 'india' 4.

The present template given in that article section is that of cities which is not a correct indicator of demographics but that of political juristrictions and no pertinant template of urban areas in india is available.

Making a new redirect in the SVG template family

(Reposted from WP:VPR#Making a new redirect in the SVG template family)

Having recently looked over Template:ShouldBeSVG/doc again, I suddenly realised that I have been flagging up images incorrectly in some cases. Namely, I have been using the code icon in a lot of cases when flagging images on http://en.wikipedia.org and http://commons.wikimedia.org. The correct category, it has transpired, is not icon but symbol. Further investigation has revealed that a fairly large number of images have been flagged up both at Wikipedia and over at the Commons, and so there now lie the two automatically created pages Category:Icon images that should be in SVG format and commons:Category:Icon images that should use vector graphics, the images in which will most probably go entirely unnoticed as those categories do not appear on Category:Images that should be in SVG format and commons:Category:Images that should use vector graphics. Thus, in order to correct my mistakes and stop such mistakes from being a problem in future, could icon be made to automatically redirect to symbol and the images flagged with icon placed either on Category:Symbol images that should be in SVG format or on commons:Category:Symbol images that should use vector graphics, just as ConverttoSVG itself redirects to ShouldBeSVG? It Is Me Here (talk) 19:40, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

ok, I rewrote the wikipedia template to fix the problem. I'll get to the commons template tomorrow. I'll also probably add an 'undeclared' page that will collect any arbitrary categories that people use in the future. --Ludwigs2 03:35, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Logo rationale

Template:Logo rationale currently refers to a "company" at multiple points in its text. This template is equally applicable, and is applied to, non-commercial organisations. Would it be possible to build in a means of selecting a term for the entity in question, for example: (a) company, (an) organisation and applying it throughout? It might be better to default to organisation, the more general term. Globbet (talk) 22:13, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Done. I have added a parameter called "type", which can be used to change to something other than company. If you would like to change the default, the edit should be easy enough for you to make. Adam McCormick (talk) 00:00, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, that works beautifully, and so quickly done. Globbet (talk) 17:16, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Brand new at userboxes

Hi, I've been trying to create my own userboxes, and it's damn near impossible for me because I am new here and therefore know very little about making userboxes. I've so far been able to use only one existing userbox (a babel). Could someone please show me how to create userboxes? The one I want to make is an Evanesence box, and I want to customize my text. Something like "this user enjoys Lithium and wants to stay in love with her sorrow". Please get back to me on my talk page, whoever is willing to help me. Thank you. --Crackthewhip775 (talk) 23:41, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

have you read through here Wikipedia:Userbox#Creating_a_new_userbox? this page is really for functional templates (rather than personal ones), but if you read through the above and are still having trouble, please leave a note on my talk page and I'll be happy to help you. --Ludwigs2 01:55, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Moving images to Commons - a talk page template

To go with Copy to Wikimedia Commons, how about a talk page template. Something like this:

Some or all images in this article are candidates to be copied to the Wikimedia Commons.

Appropriately licensed media are more accessible to other Wikimedia projects and browsers in general if placed on Commons. Any logged in user may move the image(s) - see Moving images to the Commons (CommonsHelper) for more information. If appropriate, a new category/gallery could be created as well. Please do not remove this template until all the images have been moved to the Commons.

What do we think?

Richard001 (talk) 11:41, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

well, if you have an article 'X' with multiple images that are not part of the Commons, it would seem more reasonable to place individual tags on each image pages, rather than place a collective tag on the article 'X' page. less confusion that way about which images should get moved. I'm not certain that a new template would add anything useful here. can you point to the page where you think it would be useful? --Ludwigs2 21:49, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
It would be useful on any of the many pages where there are a lot of images that should be at Commons that aren't. It both saves placing it on each individual image, and makes it more visible (that they should be moved is not otherwise clear without viewing the image pages themselves, which people often don't). Richard001 (talk) 03:08, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
My biggest concern would be that the tag wouldn't likely be seen by the sort of people who knew how to fix the issue. At least by tagging the individual images, they can be categorized and thereby found, but I wholeheartedly disagree with tagging an article with such a template. You could have a featured article with such images and tagging one of those would not be advisable. I suppose the question is "How do you see such a tag working?" I personally don't see it as a good idea. Adam McCormick (talk) 22:48, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Anybody with an account can fix the issue, though being familiar with Commons and the CommonsHelper would help. Talk pages could also be categorized and thereby found, though I think they are a lot more likely to be noticed on a talk page than at some obscure category. Tagging a featured article would be great; the real question is why it was allowed to become featured in the first place with such a glaring issue. But, if people don't like the idea, I guess I can get by. Richard001 (talk) 07:48, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Examples: Omana Regional Park, Mount Ophir. Richard001 (talk) 09:48, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
well, the advantage of tagging each individual image is that each image is then added to the appropriate category, where it will be seen by people who are likely to be looking for images to copy to commons. however, what we could do is create a subcategory of Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons called category:articles with multiple images for transfer to commons, and then make a template with no display, that only adds the article to that category, like this User:Ludwigs2/:sandbox. would that work? --Ludwigs2 02:45, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Why would you not want to display it? This is something that would go on a talk page, something editors should see. Not displaying defeats the purpose of using it.

Another possibility/alternative is a template that says 'a page (category or gallery) on this subject should be created at Commons'. It is a fairly different sort of request, though it overlaps a little with the above one. For example, Omana Regional Park wouldn't be suitable because there is already a Commons category that I created - it just needs to have many more images moved there. However, for Mount Ophir a commons page would be suitable, as well as a 'move images to commons' one. And some may already have all their images at Commons, but there may still be no page (category/gallery) there. I don't know if we need to create both of these templates, but it would be nice if at least one was available. Richard001 (talk) 10:29, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Expand inline

Hello everyone, so I'm thinking of created Template:expand-in ([Expand sentence] or [Expand]) for specific sentenes (or perhaps multi-sentence phrases) that need to be expanded. I realize this would not be as popular as Template:Expand, but I'm thinking it could still come in use enough that it might be worth having; I'd just like to get some second opinions before I create it. Any thoughts?--danielfolsom 18:12, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Article titles in italics

Can anyone whip up a template along the lines of lowercase and other title-transforming utilities to allow articles titled with a binomial species name to have their headings italicised, as Wikipedia is careful to do with occurences of binomial names in the text of articles themselves? This has been raised previously at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (technical restrictions) and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biology. Is this technically possible? If a template could be created I should think it would be quite easy to request a bot to go through all the many thousands of affected articles to insert the template. It seems a shame when you look at articles like Acer rubrum and care has been taken throughout to italicise the name, but the heading is out of reach. This sticks out like a sore thumb to biologists. 85.189.221.65 (talk) 11:54, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Ok. after some investigation, I'm pretty sure this issue is not resolvable without some modifications to wikipedia's basic workings. the problem is that the only access we get to the page title is through the DISPLAYTITLE magic word, and that only works if the new title is practically identical to the old title. adding wikitext or html italics, or span elements, or somesuch, craps out DISPLAYTITLE.
that being said, it shouldn't be too difficult to modify the code for DISPLAYTITLE so that it distinguishes between formatting and text elements. I'll take a look for the code myself, but you might want to put this request up at wp:village pump (technical) where the real wikigurus might see it. it's kind of out of my league. --Ludwigs2 18:50, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
over at the wp:village pump (technical) I found a solution - see wrongtitle which will allow you to italicize the title. there is some concern about whether italics in titles are appropriate, and it apparently needs javascript to be enabled for it to work, but... --Ludwigs2 21:24, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Singaporean actor and/or singer

I think it's time we made the template Singaporean actor and/or singer. The existing actor infoboxes don't state the fields we need, for example: the Star Awards field and others. Please give your opinions below under the headings. Paul 1953 (talk) 11:03, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Expert needed template

Thanks for recently doing work to update the Template:Expert-subject into Template:Expert-subject-multiple in orer to allow several projects and portals to be suggested at the same time, but this time this recent update appears to require yet another expansion: The ability to add specific articles as well, as currently two different templates are needed, one to request experts from projects and portals, and another regarding experts in certain articles relating to Nikola Tesla, his life and theories, a situation I stumbled upon here: Wardenclyffe Tower (the latter, custom-made template was copied from the talkpage where it's obviously been residing for quite some time). --80.187.125.4 (talk) 20:49, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Collapsible table rows

I know there are collapsible tables already, but collapsible rows would be great for sifting through comparison tables when one selects an item based on a list of requirements and needs to easily weed out candidates as they fail the requirements. Dandv (talk) 06:07, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Current squad / navbox

Please could someone help me to work out a way of combining the current squad and the navbox on Association football pages, I have asked a couple of experienced editors directly, at Wikiproject football but apart from a few positive comments and an unsuccessful attempt to help I got nowhere. I tried the village pump and got girected here.

Using Arsenal de Sarandí as an example the proposal is that since the navbox and current squad display almost exactly the same information, using almost the same code:

 • (currentsquad)
 • (navbox)

We could amend Template:Football squad or make an alternative, using switch functions and code like:

 •

So that it displays something similar to the current squad when transcribed like (changed slightly to give the [v] [d] [e] functions to allow the transcluded squad to be easily modified from the team article and a "last updated" header). There are several reasons this would be beneficial I will outline some of them:

 1. Keeping similar information in the same place and avoiding repetition makes sense for obvious reasons.
 2. Casual editors often edit one or the other, rarely both, meaning that the 2 ways of displaying the squads often contain contradictory information, combining the functions would make this kind of contradiction impossible.
 3. Editors like myself who spend/waste our time updating player and team articles during the transfer window currently have to make at least 5 edits per player transfer (1. Update player article 2. Remove player from former team article 3. Remove player from former team navbox 4. Place player into new team article 5. Place player into new team navbox) combining the current squad and the navbox would reduce this to three edits, reducing transfer window workload by 40%, (which is a lot of edits considering in just one league (Primera División Argentina) the clubs amassed nearly 300 transfers in the most recent bi-annual transfer frenzy).
 4. Introducing a "last updated" parameter would make it easier to search out and update outdated squad information.

I would be immensely grateful if someone could help me with this as it would save myself and other football editors hundreds of hours by cutting the number of repetitive edits and checks that two squad displays are not contradictory for hundreds of teams. Feel free to contact me on my talkpage. Regards EP 23:29, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

I think this is what you wanted. It would allow the current football squad templates, which are navigation boxes designed for transclusion in player articles, to be modified show they could also output a list format for transclusion in team articles. Here's an example of how it will work:
 •

User:Zyxw/Arsenal de Sarandí squad

 •

User:Zyxw/Arsenal de Sarandí squad I designed it using a multiple template format similar to the existing table templates (fb start, football squad player, etc.) and navbox templates {football squad, football squad2 player, etc.). I'm still tinkering with it, but I will let you know when it is live and ready to use. -- Zyxw (talk) 07:53, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Maybe an easy fix?

I recently tried to update User WikiProject OH so that the float parameter would move the box left, center, right. It works for left and right but center won't work? Any ideas? Thanks! §hep¡Talk to me! 21:34, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

'center' is not a valid argument for float (it takes left, right, and none). there are other tricks to use for centering elements, but which to use depends on the page context. --Ludwigs2 03:37, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Would it be possible to have the ubx float left and then if a parameter was put in it would center? Floating right wouldn't be necessary. §hep¡Talk to me! 03:42, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
well, yeah, anything's possible. it's just a question of how much complexity you want to put into the template. making something 'float center' is actually a fairly strange request (since it would imply that surrounding text wrap around the element on both sides). that would take some tricky CSS which I'd have to think about. if you just want the element to center on the page, you could use parserfunctions so that if the 'float' parameter is set it adds a float style element, but if the 'float' parameter isn't set it sets the left and right margins of the element to 'auto' (which effectively centers the element). the main question I'd have on this, though, is 'do you really want to do that?' not many people are going to want to center a userbox like this on their page, and if you just want it for your page, that's easier to accomplish by other means. --Ludwigs2 04:13, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Scratch my request. It's just for the main page on WP:OH. I'll strip the code that forces it left on that page alone and just add
tags to it. Thanks for the input though. §hep¡Talk to me! 04:25, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Help with another banner

Could someone here please make Classical have the auto function work? What I need is if someone passes auto=yes to have the following occur:

 1. Show a banner saying the article has been auto-assessed similar to what does
 2. In the line that says this article has been assessed add ability if auto=yes to put this article has ben automatically assessed
 3. Categorize the articles under Category:Automatically assessed Classical music articles (will be created when template done)

Please put all changes in the /sandbox. Thank you very much! §hep¡Talk to me! 19:54, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

User geolocation template

At Commons the template commons:Template:User location has recently been created. Assuming we have nothing similar here already, can someone make a WP version of it? What I'm currently using isn't ideal. Richard001 (talk) 05:08, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Please help with an exam results userbox template

I am currently working on Template:User GCSE results, which should, in theory, display someone's GCSE results with the markup or something similar. However, the template does not display in most cases at the moment, and once it has been fixed in its present form, I would like to expand it to not show anything for a 0 (e.g. to skip D grades if someone did not get any; this would also mean that the position of commas and the word "and" would have to change) and to remove the "s" if they only got one of a particular type of grade. If anyone could provide any assistance with this template, it would be very much appreciated. Moreover, once I have figured out how to make this template work, I will be able to adapt its code for other, similar templates related to different examinations. It Is Me Here (talk) 21:17, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

I've done some work on it - more later, but it's a start. giving me a headache, though. --Ludwigs2 05:53, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
OK, thanks a lot. Judging by the current code, I wasn't even close! It Is Me Here (talk) 07:35, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Eh, well... what you asked was actually fairly tricky: I had to write a new template for it just to get the correct grammar structure. you might actually get it to look better if you use a table with conditional rows (one column for each grade) rather than a simple sentence. --Ludwigs2 19:06, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

todo seems to bother some people when the to-do list is quite long and they have to scroll down to see the actual talk page. Would someone be able to modify it so that it is expandable/hideable? Either it would be hidden by default, or you would have the option of hiding/showing it when it was used, e.g. . Basically it would just be like the navigation templates that can be hidden; the actual list of things to do would be the part that was hidden. Richard001 (talk) 00:23, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

I've been playing with it a bit, and it's a tad difficult without changing the look of the messagebox (because of the way the software handles collapsible tables, and the way the todo box is structured). I'll try a bit more, though, and we'll see.--Ludwigs2 04:51, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
ok, I've made revisions here User:Ludwigs2/:test, and I'll propose making the change on the todo list talk page. --Ludwigs2 04:51, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Convert from ISO time stamp to another form

Hi, is there any template which will take an ISO8601 timestamp (e.g. 20240503233344) and put it into a more readable form (e.g. 11th Nov 2008)? I've been looking through Category:Time, date and calendar templates and can't seem to find one to do the job. MSGJ 17:26, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps the shiny new DATEtoMOS or something else in Category:ISO date templates. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 17:41, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
None of them seem to do what I want. MSGJ 18:01, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
I've made some templates: User:Msgj/ISOtoYEAR, User:Msgj/ISOtoMONTH, User:Msgj/ISOtoDAY, etc. So for example, produces User:Msgj/ISOtoYEAR and produces User:Msgj/ISOtoMONTH. What do you think? If these are performing a function which no other template does, then I'll put them into template space. MSGJ 19:07, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
PS, I'm not sure why these templates say Expression error: Unrecognised punctuation character "{" even though they seem to work fine. MSGJ 19:08, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
I have not looked at this particular template, but such "errors" are quite normal when the template is parsed without "mandatory" parameters being provided. The wiki parser will replace an uninstantiated parameter with, for example the text {parameter}, and if this parameter was in for example an or then the expression parser tries to interpret the "{"s, etc., as part of the expression, which is not valid expression syntax . . . As soon as a pararmeter is provided, the syntax is correct and it works fine. Peet Ern (talk) 02:13, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Taxobox

Can someone alter taxobox so that "image caption" works as well as "image_caption"? Little technicalities like that aren't really something we want people to have to remember - I presume you can have two different names for the same parameter? Richard001 (talk) 20:27, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I could do this, but it will be at least 2 probably 3 months before I can get to it . . . and as a protect template it will definitely require some explicit concensus for it to happen at all. Will it be worth the wait? Peet Ern (talk) 02:31, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Template for calculating the duration

Hi,
Maybe it yet exist, but I'm looking for a template that can calculate the time between two dates in years, months and days.

Example : will show : 3 years, 8 months and 4 days.

If it not exist, I understand that it could be a lot of work (especially with the variation of the number of days in a month), but it could be really usefull. Thank you very much. --Riba-- (talk) 03:49, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I think this might be what you want, produces {alias}, I've only used it myself for fun to count down to big sport events on my user page. If I remember correctly I used some template that calculated the age, but with precise dates (as the age templates only gave days and months when the person was under 12 months or something)... I could move this out into the open, perhaps duration, though that you've countedd to 4 days and mine template only to 3... don't know if that's a mistake somewhere or has something to do with leap years?... gives {alias}, so it doesn't count the days between the dates, so to speak, but "from this day, how many days until this other day"... And right now it doesn't seem to be able to recognize the difference between 30 or 31 day months, see {alias} {alias} — CHANDLER#10 — 20:11, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Symbolismcruft

Quoted from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology#In this coat of arms or flag, P symbolises Q, and X symbolisesY by User:Marnanel: "All over Wikipedia, you see paragraphs like this one, at Pocklington:

“ The crown at the base of the shield is the emblem of the Saints, along with the gold cross, symbolises the town's historic connection with Paulinus and the Archbishop of York. The wheat sheaves note Pocklington's agricultural importance and the water lily the famous lily lakes at Burnby Hall Gardens. ”

Now there are some problems here. Firstly, these assertions are almost always given without citations. On a deeper level, there is a general misconception, I think, that a certain charge usually has a particular meaning-- that lions mean courage, say, or even that a noticeably blue coat of arms always means something about the original armiger. This is untrue. It may be true that a pelican, a self-sacrificing bird in mythology, is in someone's arms because the original armiger was noted for being particularly self-sacrificing; it could also be because the armiger had a particular devotion to the Atonement; it could also be because he liked pelicans. If you can't ask the herald who granted the arms, you can't know.

In Pocklington's case, the arms were only granted 28 years ago, so the people actually involved in the design (or some documents written by them) may survive to this day, but some of these fanciful interpretations concern arms which are hundreds of years old. Would it be a good plan to have a tag, like armsinterpretationcruft or something, to mark these with so that people are made to find reliable sources or delete them?"

I want to echo what was said there: we need a section template that says, "What's the source for these claims of symbolism?" and shows a proper skepticism towards such allegations. Ideally, it should include a link to the Project's page, where such claims can be properly examined. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:47, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

UEFA CL Qualification Rounds

Having just seen the wall of text that attempts to explain the qualification rounds for the UEFA Champions League, I thought it would be much easier to represent this visually via a tournament template (similar to ones I have seen used for playoffs and knockout tournaments). I've tried playing around with existing templates (in a sandbox, of course!) and configuring them to what I was looking for, but to no avail (it's beyond me!). So I've had to resort to asking for help!

What I'm Looking For
Two templates, as there are two separate paths. As new teams are introduced in most rounds, ideally the line from one round to the next round would point to the "block" containing the previous round's winners. See this image I bodged together for details. If the template has options for entering the text at each stage, I can take care of inserting the text afterwards - I just need help in creating the main template first! Since each box would contain explanatory text and not just a team name, the boxes would have to be slightly larger than normal, even when using a reduced font inside.

Thanks in advance,

that would be doable with a little css. though if there's any significant amount of text that you want to go into the boxes, there might be issues with how much horizontal space the template takes up. doubling the width of the boxes in your example would not allow a lot of room for text but would still (probably) be too large to fit on a conventional browser without scrolling. can you give me a sense for what typically might go into a box? --Ludwigs2 03:47, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
The longest text that will go in a box would be "31 League Champions, Associations 16-47*", probably split over two lines. Paddyohale (talk) 21:37, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
that along with a team name, I assume? standard 21 characters or less for the name? --Ludwigs2 23:23, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
No, actually - there will be up to 31 teams, and I wasn't planning on listing all of them in the small box! If I put a general description in the box, e.g. "9 2nd Placed Finishers, Associations 7-15", and then list the teams below, it makes it a hell of a lot clearer on the visuals. If each box were to have two lines of text in I think it would be fine - the first line can have the number of teams and where they were from (League Champions, Winners of previous round, etc...), with the second line having the ranking of the Associations they qualified from (e.g. Associations 16-47). Paddyohale (talk) 20:13, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
ah, ok. give me a bit and let me see what I can whip up. --Ludwigs2 00:11, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Ok, here's a rough mockup of the first template in userspace. User:Ludwigs2/:test2 the parameters available you can see (in the curly brackets). you can implement this using . there's more that can be done (background and font colors, making the lines point to different cells, etc), so let's get those details straightened out before moving on to the next template. --Ludwigs2 05:58, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

P.s - also let me know if there's any canned text to add (for instance, it sounds like the second line is always going to read 'Associations ##-##', so I could change the template just to take the numbers.) --Ludwigs2 06:13, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

How to create userboxes

Excuse me, I was wondering how you create your very own userboxes? Veraladeramanera (talk) 02:32, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Please read the top of this page (third paragraph) where it talks about userboxes. let us know if you need help. --Ludwigs2 03:06, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Models.com

Is it possible to make a template so that

works the same way as the following:

--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 20:16, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Only if you can get me a date.
seriously, though, I'm not sure what you're asking. the template fashionmodel exists already, and it's very simple (a link that takes some parameters and has some ancillary text). do you want a template that does the same thing for a different modeling agency, or do you want that template expanded so you can specify multiple agencies? or possibly something else...? it's not difficult to do, I just need some idea of what you're envisioning. --Ludwigs2 23:13, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
Yes I know the second one has a template. I am asking if you can make a similar template for the first.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 23:18, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
ok, I think the correct thing to do is to modify the fashionmodels template to accept different modeling agencies (that way it can be easily expanded if new agencies need to be added). give me a few minutes. --Ludwigs2 00:24, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
ok, done; I just added a 'site' parameter (that takes the name of the site (as of now models.com or fashion model directory). check it out - Missy Rayder at Fashion Model Directory. of course, there's no wikipedia page for models.com, so that redlinks. let me know if there are other tweaks you want. --Ludwigs2 00:46, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Seeing what you did reminds me of Baseballstats at Chris Young (pitcher). Can you change it so that both of those two and the NYmag all are in one template and appear on one line?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 00:59, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
I could, but that's getting a little more complex. the problem is that the fashionmodel template has what looks like a 3 or 4 hundred transclusions, none of which are set up for the multiple-directory mode (and some of which, I'm judging by the template, use an older form that had positional variables instead of named variables). trying to do this correctly either means a juggling act to keep transclusions from breaking all over the place, or means a bit of laborious work (or bot work) going back and editing all the transclusion pages. it would be best to think it out a bit. for instance, what other sites might you want on this list? what's the likelihood that a model will be on site A and site B but not on site C? how clean do you want the template to be. meaning, for instance, should it be set it up just to take the model's name and generate the different site ids (lotta work on the programming end) or do you want to make editors find the correct site ids themselves (less work on this end, more work on that). --Ludwigs2 01:30, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
In truth, I never intended for you to be working with the old template. I was looking for a new one all along. I am not an expert on models, but the three I know about are the two here and the New York Magazine one at her external links section. Her sister may have a few others because she is a more prominent model, but those three would be a good start. We could add new sites as they arise.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 01:49, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
ok, I've set up a version at modelref: basically you put in the model's name and their id's for various sites. read the docs, test it out and see if it's what you're looking for, or if there's any errors or anything you want changed. --Ludwigs2 14:10, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Judging from Frankie Rayder and a few other models, you should add style.com and New York magazine profiles. Also, I do not think modelWATCH is a current reference. It looks like it is from 2000-2001.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 07:31, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Also, There is a stray commma in the output.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 07:31, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
ok, this edit should address both problems. if it doesn't, please give me a link to the entry that doesn't work (or copy the wikitext here) so that I can see the problem. that makes debugging easier. --Ludwigs2 08:07, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
The NYmag is labelled Style.com. Check your code.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 16:20, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
One more link. If we are going to include www.imdb.com, we should include TV.com. See Lucia Dvorská or Gail O'Neill.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 16:54, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
done. I gotta say, I'm not usually attracted to model types, but Lucia Dvorská is an exception. damn. --Ludwigs2 21:35, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
