West side story(film)[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was 'delete per the unanimous consensus below and the edit history indicating the original version was a possible copyright violation. Thryduulf (talk) 21:36, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Delete per WP:RDAB due to lack of space between title and disambiguator. The variation with the correct spacing, West side story (film), exists. Steel1943 (talk) 23:43, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Jenner[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget to Edward Jenner. However, there was no consensus for a hatnote at Edward Jenner. Jay 💬 08:43, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This title currently redirects to list containing a fictional "miscellaneous" character from The Walking Dead TV series. While that is indeed a popular series, I humbly submit that the most historically significant "Dr. Jenner" is Edward Jenner, the inventor of vaccination. I expect that there are other persons named Jenner with a doctorate, so I would either retarget this title to Edward Jenner (with a hatnote as appropriate), or disambiguate, if other titles can be found. Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

  • A hatnote on Edward Jenner I strongly disagree with, for a start. On the basis that there is a weak primary topic, retarget to Edward Jenner. J947edits 04:18, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Edward Jenner per nom – surely the primary topic. Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 15:51, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Edward Jenner as the primary topic. There are three topics that come up on Google that could be primary, Edward Jenner, Dr. Jenner's House (a partial title match, and Edward Jenner is the eponymous doctor) and Dr Christopher Jenner, a currently-practising pain management specialist who doesn't have an article (and 1 minute on google suggests he isn't notable, but this is not definitive). Seems very vague to me. ★Trekker (talk) 03:49, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment could be combined into PF (disambiguation) to add the variation "P&F" and list those uses -- 64.229.90.172 (talk) 04:53, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to PF (disambiguation) per IP as a plausible variation. CycloneYoris talk! 10:14, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • We have P & F created in 2012 and pointing to the same target. Maybe bundle that here? Retargeting to the PF dab is not useful as it has no entries for P & F or P and F. Jay 💬 12:49, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    I've now added P & F and P&f to the nomination. – Uanfala (talk) 16:12, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Disambiguate per Uanfala's draft. Jay 💬 16:22, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate. I don't think retargeting to PF would be useful, as there's minimal overlap between the meanings of "PF" and "P&F". The term does appear to be in common use for at least some of the topics, and it's impossible to reach those topics with the search function without using advanced options (otherwise, the engine interprets the ampersand as an operator), so disambiguation at a separate page is definitely viable. I've drafted a dab at P&F, which appears to be the more common variant. I haven't included an entry for Playfish, as I can't figure out how it's relevant (pinging RayBirks, who created this redirect in 2009, in case they remember why). – Uanfala (talk) 16:16, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate as drafted. --BDD (talk) 21:42, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

deletion, wrong name: the correct name is Hutchison 3G, not Hutchinson 3G. BB-9E Droid (talk) 16:34, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Keep – Searching up "Hutchinson 3G" brings in a lot of results from reliable sources using this, such as the British government's court record, British Information Commissioner's Office (which spells it both ways?), or a Reuters report. If these all refer to this company, this is at the very least a very common misspelling if not an alternate name, making it warrant a redirect. Randi Moth TalkContribs 20:18, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as it appears to be a common misspelling. Merko (talk) 21:23, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But it's wrong, and if the media is wrong it doesn't have to be used. In any case, it is not even used as a redirect, so it has no use. BB-9E Droid (talk) 05:10, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:RPURPOSE, likely misspellings are one of the purposes for redirects. This fits under the purpose of redirects of helping people to arrive at the page they want to read more quickly, and is likely to be accessed by a large quantity of people. This redirect in particular has been used almost nine thousand times since July 2015 (the earliest date that's given by the tool linked here), so it definitely is useful to people and should be kept per WP:RFD#K5. Randi Moth TalkContribs 08:16, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was delete. The term has usage in multiple contexts but no target was suggested. The term has potential to be added to a glossary or turned into an article. Jay 💬 08:34, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

While a loose horse is technically a riderless horse, it is generally used in horse racing parlance whereas the target article is largely about funeral usage. I don't really know enough about horse racing vs. equestrian terms to see if there's an appropriate glossary to add it to and retarget to there. There is Glossary of North American horse racing and Glossary of Australian and New Zealand punting, but from what I've seen the term is mostly used in the UK so neither of those seem appropriate, but I could be incorrect on even that. There's as well Glossary of equestrian terms, but I am not sure if it would be appropriate to add to there either. I don't really know enough about horse racing in any way to figure out what to do with this. TartarTorte 18:07, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment. I've relisted this slightly early as I'm about to leave messages about this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Equine (and maybe somewhere else as that doesn't seem very active). Relisting before rather than after doing that should be less confusing for anyone unfamiliar with RfD. Thryduulf (talk) 08:22, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also left a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Horse racing, and that project does seem active so hopefully someone knowledgeable will be along soon. Thryduulf (talk) 08:27, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Arriving on behalf of wiki projects equine and horse racing. I had not heard of the term “loose horse” being used to describe the riderless horse in funeral processions, so if anything, it’s a British English term, not a US English term. A loose horse is generally a horse that is – well, loose— running around when it’s not supposed to be running around. It is not just confined to horse racing. The term also is sometimes used in the horse slaughter industry to indicate the horses turned loose in the auction ring to be bid upon by the pound. So, my take is that unless somebody can find a definition to the funeral use, I’m ok with deletion. There’s an argument to be made that it should be put into the glossary of equestrian terms, or made into a stub article, but that means finding sources, and I’m not the one who’s going to do that today. Maybe later. Montanabw(talk) 18:18, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly retarget to Étienne. This is a plausible misspelling of the French name. While looking into this, I realized that the two names are of different origins. Nonetheless, I think retargeting this to the proposed article and simply listing the present redirect there, or providing a hatnote there would suffice. Estar8806 (talk) 01:46, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget to Étienne with a WP:HATNOTE: plausible misspelling but the hatnote is probably necessary. InterstellarGamer12321 (talk | contribs) 08:37, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Étienne with hatnote per above --Lenticel (talk) 03:52, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep This is the correct spelling of Etiene Medeiros' name, while the nominator states that the two names are of different origins, i.e. this is not a correct alternative spelling of Étienne. Correct spellings take precendence over misspellings. If we ever have more articles with people by the same name, then we can turn the redirect into a separate WP:SETINDEX. 59.149.117.119 (talk) 10:36, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was soft redirect to Wikt:skux as an alternative to deletion Salvio giuliano 20:28, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Slang word being used in a movie cannot be grounds for a redirect. Merko (talk) 03:00, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Merko: Agreed. I suggest deletion, as there are no other suitable targets, or possibly cross-wiki redirect to wikt:skux. Pageviews are steady, which would argue against deletion. Edward-Woodrow (talk) 21:15, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per above. I'm also fine with soft retargetting to wikt:skux as an alternative to deletion. --Lenticel (talk) 03:03, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
