A Subaltern[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget to Subaltern. (non-admin closure) Asmodea Oaktree (talk) 16:30, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not mentioned in the target, and no other particularly plausible targets exist. The title page of Cobbett's The Soldier's Friend bears the phrase "written by a subaltern", but I don't think that would be enough to make this a useful {{R from pseudonym}} even if it were mentioned in the target. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 23:19, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. This is not a pseudonym of Cobbet as such, and otherwise the "a" is unnecessary. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:13, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep See this entry on Abebooks for example. (The Pearl referred to here is doubtless M. L. Pearl author of William Cobbett: A Bibliographical Account of His Life and Times OUP (1953).) See also: Woldcat, which credits "A subaltern = William Cobbett, or written with his assistance." All the best: Rich Farmbrough 13:51, 17 November 2020 (UTC).[reply]
  • Weak keep per Rich Farmbrough, but this would be much stronger if we could mention it, or if Cobbett used the pseudonym in other contexts. We'll need a hatnote to the disambiguation page Subaltern, and perhaps it would be better to just retarget there and add Cobbett. --BDD (talk) 16:47, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, signed, Rosguill talk 21:20, 25 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Subaltern, primarily per the latter part of BDD's rationale above - it's not mentioned at William Cobbett, and I genuinely think it would be more useful to have a one-liner mention at the disambiguation page, such as "A Subaltern", the author listed in William Cobbett's "The Soldier's Friend", rather than hatnoting for such an obscure usage. ~ mazca talk 15:52, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Thryduulf (talk) 19:34, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Subaltern, rather obviously. The number of people who have memorized this phrase from that particular book and yet have also forgotten both the book title and the author's name, cannot possibly be larger than the number of people who are not 100% sure about WP's naming conventions when it comes to definite and indefinite articles.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  05:37, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Subaltern per the above. CycloneYoris talk! 07:12, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

List of Rhythmic top 10 singles in 2015[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. While I am often amenable to deleting similar redirects after a delete close, I will not be doing so with the other 5 referred to by Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars. Given this discussion, it may be more practical to restore them and take them to AfD. --BDD (talk) 20:11, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The target does not mention about any list of the top 10 singles in 2015. Seventyfiveyears (talk) 19:41, 26 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars provided strong-enough precedent that I am fine with deleting them here per WP:NOTBURO. Although, please, in the future do not redirect something somewhere that does not have the content suggested from the redirect. It just sweeps the problem under the rug to be cleaned up later. -- Tavix (talk) 21:33, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, BDD (talk) 18:47, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars. While I agree with Tavix and Thryduulf on the procedural point, these do not look viable anyway per the AfD record.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  05:32, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Whether it is viable at AfD is entirely a matter for AfD where it will be seen by those who are most knowledgeable and those who are most interested in the article content. It is completely inappropriate for content to be deleted by converting an article to a redirect and then nominating it here. Thryduulf (talk) 13:54, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I redirected the articles over two years ago and had nothing to do with this RfD nomination. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 23:19, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Obama's Mama[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. (non-admin closure) Asmodea Oaktree (talk) 16:40, 11 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Delete, as the redirect term clearly qualifies as WP:NONSENSE KidAd talk 18:39, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Without considering whether it's appropriate as a redirect, I don't see how this possibly qualifies as either "total nonsense / random text" or "so confusing that no reasonable person can be expected to make any sense of it." It is very easily comprehensible as "[Barack] Obama's mother", which is an accurate description of Dunham. --BDD (talk) 18:49, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. It's getting plenty of page views, it is unambiguous and harmless. Thryduulf (talk) 19:09, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
^ WP:HARMLESS KidAd talk 19:25, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is usually not productive in a discussion to blindly link a page without providing any context. Note that in the section you linked: Whether something is harmful or harmless are also valid arguments for and against deletion of redirects at Redirects for discussion. This normally centres around harm (or lack of) to the encyclopedia, e.g. from a redirect being misleading or in the way of other content. See Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion#When should we delete a redirect?. -- Tavix (talk) 21:09, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is ambiguous though. All these people (and these people) have mothers. -- Tavix (talk) 21:09, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Given that Obama redirects to Barack Obama I don't see that as a problem. Thryduulf (talk) 02:25, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Thryduulf (including later clarifying arguments like the one at 02:25, 4 December 2020).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  05:30, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Clearly the primary topic for this search, seeing as Barack Obama is the primary topic for Obama and this is his mother. Possibly include a hatnote to Family of Barack Obama which discusses other possible people. Smartyllama (talk) 15:13, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is too informal to hatnote. --BDD (talk) 16:44, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, but if people are that concerned that someone searching for "Obama's Mama" will be looking for the mother of Sasha and Malia (i.e. Michele Obama) or perhaps Barack Obama Sr.'s mother (President Obama's grandmother) that's the solution. It's not an RfD issue in any case. Smartyllama (talk) 19:47, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Family of Barack Obama, where Obama's Baby Mama (Michelle) and Obama's Mama (Dunham) and the grandmother ("Mama" in some dialects) are listed -- 67.70.26.89 (talk) 20:06, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per WP:XY. A reader could be looking for either "LOL" or "JK", and I don't see a place where we can easily address both. --BDD (talk) 16:09, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per WP:XY. This redirect is very confusing. Chisanava (talk) 04:55, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Consensus is split between deletion or retargeting, but those arguing for retargeting have very much not agreed on a target. Also, an extra related redirect was added late in the discussion, so relisting one more time.

  • Delete There is no natural target. Pichpich (talk) 17:16, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Even though "LOL JK" is a somewhat common phrase, there do not appear to be any targets that effectively cover both "LOL" and "JK" being used together, which as others have pointed out results in a somewhat subtle WP:XY issue. ―NK1406 talkcontribs 02:38, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete for now, due to lack of target. No prejudice against re-creation targeted to LOL if there's a section for derivations (and this one's included), per AngusWOOF.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  05:23, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The first Henry Stickmin game was created 10 years before Among Us. The games also share no connection outside of references and the fact PuffballsUnited developed both of them. If Henry Stickmin isn't considered notable enough to be on Wikipedia, this redirect should be deleted. Alternatively the redirect could be moved to Flash (software). — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThisIsSparta2007 (talkcontribs) 09:10, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete and WP:SALT everything. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 17:50, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I don’t see the fact that the same person developed the two works as a strong enough connection. This may be worth revisiting if Marcus Bromander aka PuffballUnited ever becomes independently notable.--65.92.160.124 (talk) 21:15, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Per nom, with a liberal dose of WP:SALT.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 01:28, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete but certainly do not salt. There's a good chance that the character is or will become actually more notable than one particular game in which it appears.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  05:21, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I think we should hold off on this, at least until after The Game Awards 2020 as Innersloth will be revealing a new map that is the location in The Henry Stickmin games. CaptainGalaxy 11:35, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Whitehorse, Yukon is the more appropriate redirect target, previously discussed at Talk:White horse (disambiguation). Alternately could move the article at Whitehorse, Yukon to Whitehorse. 162.208.168.92 (talk) 07:02, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • Note that just because something is a country doesn't mean it cannot also be a city, e.g. there are three settlements in the Untied States called Russia, and city states are a thing. It's true though that in this case there are no settlements in Russia called "Belarus" or settlements in Belarus called "Russia", this is not a consequence of countries having those names.
