Mandel potato[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget to Almond potato. --BDD (talk) 05:25, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The short version: There does not seem to be any historical use in the English language of the name "Mandel potato" (coined from the Danish/Norwegian/Swedish/German word for almond, "mandel/Mandel" + potato). -- Sam Sailor Talk! 12:55, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean "no historical usage"? Do actually research your nominations. I mean that was the FIRST page of the google search. Withdraw this nomination please until the AfD discussion is resolved. -- OBSIDIANSOUL 17:22, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I have added book sources to Almond potato as the natural mandatory due diligence. I'll summarize what can be read in detail at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Almond potato: the English common name "Almond potato" has been in use since at least since 1896. The coined term "Mandel potato" hardly sees any use. If you want to argue that it has been in use, please provide citations to that effect. -- Sam Sailor Talk! 19:21, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
But it is used, correct? What are redirects for again? Oh right. Alternative names. -_- See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Almond potato for anyone interested.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 00:21, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • YesY Done. I should have done that the moment the discussion was closed.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 18:19, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh well. It doesn't work as long as the RfD template is active. Can someone close this already please. -- OBSIDIANSOUL 18:27, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Year ending on Thursday[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. --BDD (talk) 05:23, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:XY. A year ending on Thursday can either be a common year starting on Thursday (as this year, 2015, is) or a leap year starting on Wednesday. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 03:27, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per nom. --Rubbish computer 16:39, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, no, I shan't take the leap year Wednesday argument by Geoffrey, I think Geoffrey queers his own pitch there by suggesting that Wednesday is Thursday on a leap year, in which case XY would fail. It doesn't take a great deal of arithmetic to work out that 365 is indivisible by seven, but that doesn't help our readers.
The quickest way to explain it is to do it, as the White Rabbit said:
Extended content
are all red. as for their possible targets,
common year starting on Monday
common year starting on Tuesday
common year starting on Wednesday
common year starting on Friday
common year starting on Saturday
common year starting on Sunday
leap year starting on Monday
leap year starting on Tuesday
leap year starting on Wednesday
leap year starting on Friday
leap year starting on Saturday
leap year starting on Sunday
are all blue, as are the redirects to them:
common years starting on Monday
common years starting on Tuesday
common years starting on Wednesday
common years starting on Thursday
common years starting on Friday
common years starting on Saturday
common years starting on Sunday
leap years starting on Monday
leap years starting on Tuesday
leap years starting on Wednesday
leap years starting on Thursday
leap years starting on Friday
leap years starting on Saturday
leap years starting on Sunday
None or all. But this redirect goes from a year starting on some day to it ending on some day, which is tantamount WP:RFD#D2 confusing, because leap year or not, a year does not start on the weekday it ends on. Delete, and I shall go clean my bludgeon. Si Trew (talk) 22:57, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
After all that, which is valid, I never noticed that something "starting" and "ending" are not the same thing. Still D2 confusing. Si Trew (talk) 23:24, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The redirection is incorrect, because a leap year starting on Wednesday ends on a Thursday. Either delete or make into a disambiguation page with links to both Common year starting on Thursday and leap year starting on Wednesday. Note that these pages exist to provide a calendar for the particular kind of year. Karl (talk) 12:09, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Delete. The page was linked only by ISO week date and pages discussing it. I've removed the link in ISO week date on the grounds it is incorrect and superfluous (earlier text has the links). The page is now an orphan, except for pages discussing it. Karl (talk) 12:38, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. I'm not sure if WP:XY is a good rationale to use because it wouldn't equally refer to both systems (It's about 3x more likely to be a common year than a leap year). That being said, it is unnecessarily confusing and the harm outweighs the good in this case. -- Tavix (talk) 15:07, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Foreign redirects to Mrs.[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete all but Mevrou and Mevrouw, which are retargeted to Jonkheer. Presumably "Mevr" and "Mevr." are abbreviations thereof; I'll leave that to someone else to recreate if appropriate. --BDD (talk) 05:12, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Delete all per WP:NOTDIC as Wikipedia is not a translation dictionary, per WP:RFOREIGN, and per WP:R#D8. -- Tavix (talk) 03:10, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete the lot - English Wikipedia = English Words, It's as simple as that. –Davey2010Talk 04:52, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • It is most assuredly not that simple. Neelix (talk) 16:47, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all per above statements.Cebr1979 (talk) 06:06, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong delete all per nom. --Rubbish computer 16:38, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Neelix's retargeting suggestions and discussion about splitting, carried out by Ivanvector
Yeah, I think so tool Steely. Is Kyria a likelz synonzm for Syria for example? Sorrz for the slow link and all the mostakes. Si Trew (talk) 23:54, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think the most efficient way to handle this would be simply to close this discussion as a "delete" to all the uncontested ones, a "retarget" to Neelix's suggestions, and no prejudice against speedy nomination of any of the suggestions (eg: Simon may choose to speedy renominate Sardarni.) Another suggestion might be to split out any of Neelix's suggestions that are contested, but then I wouldn't how to handle the other delete !votes. -- Tavix (talk) 23:58, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Tavix's suggestion that we delete the uncontested entries and retarget the ones I have identified makes most sense to me. It would be much easier for everyone to simply let any concerns about specific redirects arise individually in separate discussions. Neelix (talk) 00:22, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I!m happy with that. Si Trew (talk) 00:45, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Split - without prejudice, I have split this discussion based on Neelix' comment. This mass nomination came on my wedding day and you get to do stuff like this when it's your day. Please check my work below. In preview, Si's Urno discussion is floating to the very bottom and I don't know why, but I expect it to float back on save. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 18:48, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The work looks good to me. I went ahead and collapsed this section due to the fact that it's no longer relevant to the redirects that remain. Congrats on being married too! -- Tavix (talk) 20:43, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict) Úrnő and Urno can go delete, assuming they are an attempt at Hungarian, because they are not now Hungarians call the missus (and I should know cos I have a a hungarian missus), I am just guessing here from the "ő" which is is pecilularily hungarian but wrong. Hungarian wives'surnames are composed of a complicated system of their father's and mother's surnames and their spouse's first name, in almost any order they choose, but neither of these make sense, so they can go on the "delete" pile (the usual suffix is "-ne", unrelated to ""(e) meaning birth name, maiden name, but where it's attached is really up to the missus so my wife can be Si Trewne or Si-ne Trew or Monkap2-ne TrewSi and so on, remembering that Hungarian Name order means surname comes first). That's all assuming these are attempts at Hungarian, not marked as such. Si Trew (talk) 00:08, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • WP:BOLDly delete all. If someone, even me, wants to recrreate e.g. Sardini then they will get a warning message that it has been previously deleted and be referred to this discussion. Si Trew (talk) 00:45, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all of the remaining redirects. "Mrs." is an English honorific; it has no relevance in these foreign languages and possibly even has an entirely different meaning as traditions vary across cultures. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 18:48, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Mevrou and Mevrouw should redirect to Jonkheer; the article explicity states Mevrouw is the title for the wife of a Jonkheer. Colonies Chris (talk) 17:41, 30 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Move per Tavix. Steel1943 (talk) 22:13, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Steel1943: Could you supply the relevant part of NCPLACE that would back up your rationale? WP:NCPLACE says to use the local, English name, which would be "Sigra". The current practice, in this instance, has the districts being named as their common name unless necessary as a disambiguator. See Category:Cities and towns in Varanasi district. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tavix (talkcontribs) 21:42, 28 September 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]
Tavix, I noticed that Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#India says to basically disambiguate "when needed", so I changed my vote. Steel1943 (talk) 22:13, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for looking into that for me. I appreciate it. -- Tavix (talk) 23:15, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
