• If I search with quotes I get 1st millennium in North American history and other websites of similar topic, or if I type out "one" I get North American Union or North American monetary union, which are basically the same topic and should probably be merged. But none actually contain either phrase nor could I say that a user typing this certainly wants to find any of these topics, so I think delete as confusing. Ivanvector (talk) 15:05, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

This is a bit of a test of WP:FORRED. This certainly seems like an unlikely search term, since we don't use anything but (disambiguation) in titles to mark disambiguation pages. French Wikipedia uses (homonymie). We certainly shouldn't have (homonymie) redirect to most disambiguation pages. But since all uses of "Batiscan" seem to be related to Francophone Canada, is this appropriate? BDD (talk) 16:22, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

• Nice test case. Deleteish but it does seem to fall through the gaps. WP:FORRED (WP:RFOREIGN) don't really cover it since homonymy is a perfectly good Greek, er English, word, but it isn't how we do things here. WP:RFD#D2 confusion seems out, as does WP:RFD#D5 nonsense. I think in the end, in the one-to.one relationship imposed by WikiData, since fr:Batiscan (homonymie) is crossreffed to en:Batiscan (disambiguation), this redirect is about as much use as a snake in an arse-kicking competition. But it is hard to pin down exactly why. Redundant, and perhaps harmful in that the three point turn now that WikiData enforces a 1-1 relationship (I have moaned about that before ) means it is rather a WP:SURPRISE. Who would ever search for this? Even I didn't know that "homonymy" was a word, I could work it out from my classical educationreading naughty Greek stuff in comprehensive school (Ovid is filthy). Transliteration is hard, and since this causes genuine confusion even with (I assume) Hong Kongers who speak Chinese and English, it is confusing for we that don't. Pinyin has been the ISO standard for transcribing Chinese into English since 1982, there's nothing confusing about it. See my comment below. -Zanhe (talk) 21:11, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

I'm not arguing against that: Just that names in any language tend to get transliterated differently: why do we have "ffolkes" and "Smythe" and "Turin" for example (and it took us a while to stop calling it Peking). • Speedy Keep, disambiguate, and block IP - the IP proposer is a confirmed sockpuppet of the banned User:Instantnood, see investigation page, but has somehow evaded blocking. He's made five previous disruptive attempts to delete the redirect, which have been denied by multiple administrators, see page history. Now he's sneakily initiating an RFD without putting a required notice on the page (which is why I did not find out about this discussion until now). His reasoning is also invalid. Pinyin is the ISO standard for transliterating Chinese names in general, widely used by scholars. For example, Paul Fonoroff, probably the best known Hong Kong film historian, spells all Hong Kong names in pinyin, see A Brief History of Hong Kong Cinema. • Delete per WP:RNEUTRAL. This reminds me of Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2015_May_14#Islamic_Stater and Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2015_May_14#Dubai_Town that were opened by Sammy1339. They were all created by a now indefinitely blocked user, Freidnless lnoner. The pages he created were then deleted by Beeblebrox. Since DoRD blocked both Freidnless and Oloperdf around the same time, are they related to each other? I don't see a sockpuppet notice anywhere, so I'm kind of confused whether Oloperdf is a sock or not. If anyone that I pinged can help here, I would appreciate it. •  Administrator note According to the block log, this was a WP:CHECKUSER block, so the redirects can all be deleted via CSD G5. Unfortunately mass delete only works on fairly recent creations so these have to be done one at a time. If this is the only sheikhdom ever under British protectorate then it is harmless, but I don't think that is the case. Qatar? ^{I forgot to sign. Comment. We don't have Independed sheikhdom or Independent Sheikhdom. And Kuwait has not been a British protectorate since 1961: Kuwait#Golden Era (1946–1982)). Unfortunately I can't find anything like List of British protectorates or List of former British protectorates. Unfortunately not. The nearest I find is Arab Federation (of Iraq and Jordan), but that's no good, I think. The model, I think, for the article, would be the United Arab Republic of Syria and Egypt (1958–1961), which I remember it was listed thus in my Guinness Book of Records of 1966 and 1968, given to me and me bro by my grandfather, and ten years out of date even then! But beautifully printed. (He was a great lover of Pears Cyclopaedia, too.) I might have a stab at making a draft, then, but I can see it being rather controversial. Sort of the opposite of what I call RfD zen: we wouldn't create this dab on its own, but it's tempting to make something out of an existing redirect. I know what you mean by "RfD zen" (although I deliberately plant dead pheasants on my fence so the feng shui can't get in, and saves me on cat food, too. And replacing mattresses). But on that kinda line, since it exists, and nobody seems to want to delete it, what shall we do with it? I am totally fine for you to reject the draft, that is why it is a draft and I wasn't WP:BOLD and just replaced it, but any other suggestions? WP:NOTPERFECT, WP:NOTFINISHED, but that seems better than what we have currently. (Oh by the way I broke a nail when someone wrote "presently" the other day, "Presently" means soon, not now. Delete, then (and of course I will nom the draft for WP:G7 if that is the consensus here). It's exactly the way I would search, if I wanted to know about the federal aspects of it in particular. But we don't have Federal Republic of the United States of America (nor ... USA nor ... U.S.A nor ... US nor ... U.S.) even though it is one, so I can see your line of reasoning. We don't have Iraqi Federation or Iraqi federation, although we have Canadian Federation → Canada (but not Canadian federation), and Australian Federation and Australian federation → Federation of Australia, and that is the model that seems better, because it discusses the process of federation. (Which is why I made the distinction between "Federation" and "federation"). Although we do have Canadian confederation and Canadian federalism. So in short, we are not very consistent with how we name these. (I just picked a couple of places from the British Commonwealth so as not to make an entirely exhaustive list.)

These things can be quite contentious, I know, cos I was doing up one of the articles from Venezuela (disambiguation) in about December 2014 (the DAB has my handwriting all over it), but I forget which one: they got moved around quite a bit. Si Trew (talk) 09:30, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
