I'm not seeing this as a plausible search term. North America is +1 in the North American Numbering Plan, could it be worth a retarget? Tavix | Talk  23:52, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Stab in the dark. Just hazarding a guess, would people at all be searching for Air Force 1 ( → Air Force One)? Si Trew (talk) 08:00, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so; consult List of countries in North America that are not the United States. --BDD (talk) 13:53, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Tu quoquo and all that! Nicely done. Si Trew (talk) 21:44, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I sneakily made the list you suggested. I'll WP:G7 it of course. Si Trew (talk) 21:52, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
User:Tavix, I am not sure you can G7 it cos you are not the author, but I certainly can so I've supported that on its talk page. With respect, also in the nom itself I linked back to here (you'd reffed but not linked.) Si Trew (talk) 01:31, 6 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Batiscan (homonymy)[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. Deryck C. 19:24, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is a bit of a test of WP:FORRED. This certainly seems like an unlikely search term, since we don't use anything but (disambiguation) in titles to mark disambiguation pages. French Wikipedia uses (homonymie). We certainly shouldn't have (homonymie) redirect to most disambiguation pages. But since all uses of "Batiscan" seem to be related to Francophone Canada, is this appropriate? BDD (talk) 16:22, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Nice test case. Deleteish but it does seem to fall through the gaps. WP:FORRED (WP:RFOREIGN) don't really cover it since homonymy is a perfectly good Greek, er English, word, but it isn't how we do things here. WP:RFD#D2 confusion seems out, as does WP:RFD#D5 nonsense. I think in the end, in the one-to.one relationship imposed by WikiData, since fr:Batiscan (homonymie) is crossreffed to en:Batiscan (disambiguation), this redirect is about as much use as a snake in an arse-kicking competition. But it is hard to pin down exactly why. Redundant, and perhaps harmful in that the three point turn now that WikiData enforces a 1-1 relationship (I have moaned about that before ) means it is rather a WP:SURPRISE. Who would ever search for this? Even I didn't know that "homonymy" was a word, I could work it out from my classical educationreading naughty Greek stuff in comprehensive school (Ovid is filthy). Si Trew (talk) 19:38, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Declaration of Interest. My ex partner of seven years pretended to be a Canadian Francophone, but my French is a lot better than hers, even in Canada. Si Trew (talk) 19:40, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oh, it's just an {{R from move}} by User:Boleyn in 2013. Safely it can be deleted, then, as WP:G6 housekeeping. And now I get back to my Rabaska. Si Trew (talk) 19:44, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I moved the disambiguation page from thi because it was a poor title. No concerns about the redirect being deleted. Boleyn (talk) 19:48, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Thanks, @Boleyn:. We have seven incoming links to this, which we'll need to sort out, but since they go to the redirect to the DAB, they weren't really serving the purpose anyway. I'm hesitant to fix them up while a discussion is open, and you are probably better to do it. It's mostly francophone places in Québec. 19:51, 4 June 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by SimonTrew (talkcontribs)

Wang Zongyao[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. I was going to disambiguate, but if there are only two uses, a hatnote will be the better approach. --BDD (talk) 13:53, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. The Pinyin system of transcription isn't used in Hong Kong nor for Hongkongers. The redirect under this name is irrelevant to the subject of this entry. 12:18, 27 May 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2404:c800:9003:8::13 (talkcontribs) Sockpuppet, see SPI. -Zanhe (talk) 20:56, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Weak Keep But the article needs to be corrected. Pinyin should be removed from the infobox, and placed into a {{Chinese}} template below the infobox. The infobox should contain Jyutping and actual spellings. -- 65.94.43.89 (talk) 08:42, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Wang Jian (Former Shu)#Personal information, which discusses a potentially-notable person who is actually called Wang Zongyao in English-language WP:RS (e.g. Hongjie Wang's Power and Politics in Tenth-Century China). 58.176.246.42 (talk) 07:53, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, BDD (talk) 14:59, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • 'Delete' as WP:RFD#D2 confusion. Thanks to 58.176, and 24ö4:c8000, but this is English Wikipedia. Transliteration is hard, and since this causes genuine confusion even with (I assume) Hong Kongers who speak Chinese and English, it is confusing for we that don't. Si Trew (talk) 19:58, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Pinyin has been the ISO standard for transcribing Chinese into English since 1982, there's nothing confusing about it. See my comment below. -Zanhe (talk) 21:11, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not arguing against that: Just that names in any language tend to get transliterated differently: why do we have "ffolkes" and "Smythe" and "Turin" for example (and it took us a while to stop calling it Peking). But you are obviously better placed to judge this than I am, so striking my delete. Si Trew (talk) 07:12, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Previously I've argued to keep this redirect because redirects are cheap and this is a correct alternative transcription. But given 58.176's find, I now think we should either delete as ambiguous, or disambiguate. Deryck C. 20:35, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Deryck, being ambiguous is not a valid reason to delete, but only a reason to disambiguate. -Zanhe (talk) 20:51, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Being ambiguous is a perfectly valid reason to delete: WP:RFD#D2 confusion. Si Trew (talk) 13:11, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You're confusing ambiguity with confusion. Ambiguity arises when multiple topics share the same name, and should be solved with disambiguation. Confusion (WP:RFD#D2) arises when a redirect is based on a wrong name, which is not the case here. -Zanhe (talk) 20:50, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy Keep, disambiguate, and block IP - the IP proposer is a confirmed sockpuppet of the banned User:Instantnood, see investigation page, but has somehow evaded blocking. He's made five previous disruptive attempts to delete the redirect, which have been denied by multiple administrators, see page history. Now he's sneakily initiating an RFD without putting a required notice on the page (which is why I did not find out about this discussion until now). His reasoning is also invalid. Pinyin is the ISO standard for transliterating Chinese names in general, widely used by scholars. For example, Paul Fonoroff, probably the best known Hong Kong film historian, spells all Hong Kong names in pinyin, see A Brief History of Hong Kong Cinema. See discussion on Talk:Gregory Wong. -Zanhe (talk) 20:49, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was speedy delete per G10. I wouldn't normally do this sort of thing, but it's a very new redirect. And this makes the second time in several days that it's been speedily deleted. --BDD (talk) 14:06, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not an appropriate redirect. — This, that and the other (talk) 13:45, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. Loaded term, WP:RNEUTRAL, and WP:RFD#D8 "novel or very obscure synonym for an article name" (both created on 28 March 2015 by User:Oloperdf, their only contributuons). "-stan" in English derogatary parole is for a tinpot dictatorship (which we don't have either, not even tinpot or tin pot), sadly, but that is perhaps more WP:DICDEF). With the price of tin being what it is, it would be a wealthy dictatorship. Unfortunately all my money is tied up in cash. Si Trew (talk) 11:18, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately mass delete only works on fairly recent creations so these have to be done one at a time. I'm working my way through it, but I may have to go to work any minute now, so if anyone wants to tag for speedy deletion go right ahead. Beeblebrox (talk) 16:08, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This template should have been deleted and not redirected, if people transcluded this, it will end up transcluding the entire article. - TheChampionMan1234 03:55, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete pér Champ, WP:RFD#D5 nonsense. (I checked at WP:TFD and this is indeed the right forum, but evem if it weren't I wouldn't nitpick that). Si Trew (talk) 04:57, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, the target has population in its infobox but no historical population, which I would expect of an article of this importance. And why did Constantinople get the works? (Its nobody's business but the Turks'). Sings: it's Istanbul it was Constantinople... Si Trew (talk) 13:16, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Implausible search term, most sources that mention this term also mentions what it means. - TheChampionMan1234 03:54, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete as WP:RFD#D2 confusing, WP:SURPRISE. One hit in May, well within noise level. No internal links. But presumably there were also other sheikhdoms under British protectorate, e.g. I dunno the United Arab Emirates (although that's emirs not sheiks, but you see the point I hope). If this is the only sheikhdom ever under British protectorate then it is harmless, but I don't think that is the case. Qatar? I forgot to sign. Is the bot sleeping? Si Trew (talk) 08:52, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Comment. We don't have Independed sheikhdom or Independent Sheikhdom. And Kuwait has not been a British protectorate since 1961: Kuwait#Golden Era (1946–1982)). Unfortunately I can't find anything like List of British protectorates or List of former British protectorates. (the UK has the "power to protect" the Falkland Islands, but even they are not a protectorate.) Si Trew (talk) 09:23, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete there are many instances of nominally independent Sheikdom protectorates of Britain, with varying understandings of what is meant by Sheikdom (emir, sheik, prince, king, self-declared or self-promoted or prior title, or pretenders, etc) -- 70.51.202.183 (talk) 06:23, 7 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Federal Republic of Iraq[edit]

The result of the discussion was delete. The consensus below is that the title of the redirect is incorrect and can cause confusion. Deryck C. 19:22, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Invented name, this was never the official name of a regime. - TheChampionMan1234 03:51, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete WP:RFD#D2 confusing, WP:RFD#D5 makes no sense. Iraq is not, and has never been, a federation. Si Trew (talk) 05:02, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment do we have an article on the proposed federalization of Iraq? (ie. Kurdistan, Sunnistan, Shiastan, Marsh Arabs, Baghdad division of Iraq) -- 70.51.46.11 (talk) 07:08, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately not. The nearest I find is Arab Federation (of Iraq and Jordan), but that's no good, I think. The model, I think, for the article, would be the United Arab Republic of Syria and Egypt (1958–1961), which I remember it was listed thus in my Guinness Book of Records of 1966 and 1968, given to me and me bro by my grandfather, and ten years out of date even then! But beautifully printed. (He was a great lover of Pears Cyclopaedia, too.) I might have a stab at making a draft, then, but I can see it being rather controversial. Si Trew (talk) 08:49, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I know what you mean by "RfD zen" (although I deliberately plant dead pheasants on my fence so the feng shui can't get in, and saves me on cat food, too. And replacing mattresses). But on that kinda line, since it exists, and nobody seems to want to delete it, what shall we do with it? I am totally fine for you to reject the draft, that is why it is a draft and I wasn't WP:BOLD and just replaced it, but any other suggestions? WP:NOTPERFECT, WP:NOTFINISHED, but that seems better than what we have currently. (Oh by the way I broke a nail when someone wrote "presently" the other day, "Presently" means soon, not now. It is not a synonym for currently. See Fowler. But I am fighting a losing battle there, I know.) Si Trew (talk) 17:04, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be inclined to either say delete or keep as {{R from incorrect name}}, leaning the former because it's incredibly difficult to imagine a user searching for this term but not thinking to just search "Iraq". --BDD (talk) 17:05, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Delete, then (and of course I will nom the draft for WP:G7 if that is the consensus here). It's exactly the way I would search, if I wanted to know about the federal aspects of it in particular. But we don't have Federal Republic of the United States of America (nor ... USA nor ... U.S.A nor ... US nor ... U.S.) even though it is one, so I can see your line of reasoning. We don't have Iraqi Federation or Iraqi federation, although we have Canadian FederationCanada (but not Canadian federation), and Australian Federation and Australian federationFederation of Australia, and that is the model that seems better, because it discusses the process of federation. (Which is why I made the distinction between "Federation" and "federation"). Although we do have Canadian confederation and Canadian federalism. So in short, we are not very consistent with how we name these. (I just picked a couple of places from the British Commonwealth so as not to make an entirely exhaustive list.)
These things can be quite contentious, I know, cos I was doing up one of the articles from Venezuela (disambiguation) in about December 2014 (the DAB has my handwriting all over it), but I forget which one: they got moved around quite a bit. Si Trew (talk) 09:30, 5 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We are between Iraq and a hard place. (Isiah 43). Si Trew (talk) 18:09, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete as first choice, keep and tag with {{R from incorrect name}} as second. --BDD (talk) 13:46, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. I don't think this is a likely search term. In case someone does search for it, the search engine would be of more help than this redirect. Tavix | Talk  14:40, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
