Gay blood donation[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. The clear consensus is that this redirect is useful and will take the reader to information that they are likely to be seeking. WP:RNEUTRAL is also relevant. NAC. The Whispering Wind (talk) 20:15, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Non-neutral and inaccurate redirect. 'Gay' is not the same as 'men who have sex with men'. - MrX 21:56, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. Despite the MrX's dispute regarding the definition of "gay", "Gay blood donation" is a plausible search phrase, and it is likely the searcher would find the information that they seek at "MSM blood donor controversy". Axl ¤ [Talk] 22:50, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am for MSM blood donor controversy because MSM and/or Men who have sex with men are more accurate terms. If the acronym is a problem we could always change it to 'men who have sex with men blood donor controversy.' @Axl:, "Keep" may be a little bit confusing because MSM blood donor controversy is what the page is currently titled as. --Prcc27 (talk) 23:26, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think that MrX wants to have the redirect deleted. I would like to keep the redirect. Axl ¤ [Talk] 23:31, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification, since the page used to be called that- I think it's best to keep the redirect. Prcc27 (talk) 01:41, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • keep MSM term is obscure and in any case people who are thinking of this more expansively need to end up at the article that's going to tell them that the situation is more limited than that. Mangoe (talk) 17:03, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE: The page was renamed to Men who have sex with men blood donor controversy; I still think we should keep the Gay blood donation redirect because even though msm and gay aren't the same thing, it is very likely that people will type "Gay blood donation" instead of "Men who have sex with men blood donor controversy." --Prcc27 (talk) 23:39, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. While the page should not be called Gay blood donation for the reason stated, this a useful redirect for the target page. Readers visiting this will be looking for the information at the target, so no reason to present them with a red link. 82.132.246.244 (talk) 18:50, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was no consensus. It's unclear whether this is a FORRED case. But the keep arguments demonstrate that this term may have some limited usage, and could thus be used as a search term. --BDD (talk) 16:30, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Czech is not an official language of Ukrainee whatsoever. Thus Delete. TheChampionMan1234 10:25, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete: indeed no specific ties. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 13:19, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, a plausible phonetic spelling of the country's name in its own language. Mentioned in the article. Siuenti (talk) 22:13, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Phonetic? If you read "Ukrajina" following English pronunciation rules, you won't get closer then with "Ukraine". — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 15:15, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • Actually I should have called it a transcription, but if you follow the usual pronunciation of Slavic alphabets, or the IPA, you will get it about right. Siuenti (talk) 22:10, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
        • This word is neither English nor IPA transcription of Ukraine's name in Ukrainian or English. There is no Ukrainian pronunciation of this word, because Ukrainian uses Cyrillic. In fact your arguments are only valid for languages that have no ties with Ukraine, so WP:FORRED applies. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 22:57, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
          • See Scientific transliteration of Cyrillic and please update the article if the IPA transcription is incorrect. Siuenti (talk) 09:01, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
            • Per Scientific transliteration of Cyrillic Ukarine's name should be transliterated as "Ukraïna" ("Ukrajina" version is long obsolete). IPA transcription in article is correct, particularly in not matching this redirect: ukrɑˈjinɑ. Anyway, both rationales are inappropriate overextensions of language-specific ties. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 09:38, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
              • It's very silly to expect someone to find a ï when they are using a western keyboard for example. Siuenti (talk) 09:48, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                • Not nearly as silly as to expect someone retyping "Ukrajina" when looking up what "Ukraïna" may stand for. And it is no sillier then to expect someone to use transliterated text, particularily given that transliteration always comes in context of original, which is already served by Україна. P.S.: thank you for the hint, IPA transcription in the article is indeed wrong: it should be "ukrɑˈinɑ". — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 09:55, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                  • The original might be on a piece of paper or someone's memory. Siuenti (talk) 12:01, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                    • Sure. And in such case it would either be rewritten verbatim or with "i", but not with "ji". At least unless the person is knowledgable enough to search for "Ukraine" directly. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 15:04, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                      • Yi_(Cyrillic) and Romanization of Ukrainian also give "ji" as a possible transliteration of Ї. Thus it might be found that way in transliterated text, or typed that way by someone who knows/sees "Україна" but doesn't have a Cyrillic keyboard. Siuenti (talk) 20:28, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                        • "Ukrajina" can only found in transliterated text if reader is capable of reading of text in Ukrainian – otherwise every word there is unknown. I can't believe that this skill comes without knowledge of either Ukrainian or English name of the country. I can't believe that there are people who know the rules of romanization of Ukrainian, but don't know the country's name. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 23:56, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                          • They might know it in English, but prefer to use the endonym. Siuenti (talk) 06:01, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                            • Then it should be deleted as very harmful to avoid confusing readers about availability of Language-based redirects. — Dmitrij D. Czarkoff (talktrack) 06:55, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                              • This kind of redirect is supposed to be available, since it's in a language related to the topic. Deleting it would be a cause for confusion. Siuenti (talk) 22:58, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                  • The IPA in the article was correct. I have put the /j/ back. Gorobay (talk) 15:46, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete The redirect has no use. --Prcc27 (talk) 23:49, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, “Ukrajina” is the Latin transcription of “Україна” according to most Slavic orthographies. Ukrainian is a Slavic language. (talk) 13:57, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was retarget to Graig Weich. As this appears to be the only topic that could sensibly be referred to as "Weich," this appears to be the clearest course of action. From what I can understand by googling it, Shuntian Fu is a place in Taiwan, quite far away from the place mentioned in the target.
