Image of Renaissance tapestry question[edit]

Hi, I'm trying to find a way to get an image of a 1420 tapestry which had music by P. des Molins on it. I've been unable to find it an image at the museum that holds it (Paris, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Inventory number Pe602). It's on various stock photo websites (alamy, getty, fotostock) but I'm assuming these are unusable despite the work being out of copyright. Any help finding a usable image, or information regarding the use of the stock images would be greatly appreciated. Aza24 (talk) 02:15, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Aza24: This is an interesting case. Is a tapestry a 2D work or a 3D work? A photo is a "derived work". A "derived work" has both the copyright of the subject (if any) which belongs to the copyright holder of the original, plus the copyright of any "creative elements" added by the derivation, which belongs to the creator of the derived work (the photographer). A photo of a 3D image includes the "creative work" of the photographer, who decided on the lighting, camera angle, etc. However, a photo of a 2D work that attempts to faithfully reproduce the 2D work is held to add no "creative" elements, and therefore carries only the copyright of the original. Good luck with this. I think we are forced to be cautious here and not use the stock images. I suggest you contact the museum and ask them to release a lower-resolution image under CC-BY-SA. -Arch dude (talk) 05:02, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: Yes that might be the best approach, thanks for the suggestion. I would think it's a 2D work but agree that using stock images is a bad idea. Aza24 (talk) 05:11, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Submitting a Draft to AfC[edit]

 Courtesy link: Draft:Crystal Loverro

Hello,

I am working on a draft with 2 other contributors.

I added the code at the top of the page subst : submit | username. I never received a notification or confirmation that this page will now be reviewed by the AfC.

How do I know if this draft is pending review?

Thanks.

@Norousan: The template you added says "Review waiting, please be patient", so it's already in the backlog. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.)Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:35, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It also states "This may take 3 months or more", but since I've already looked it over, I'll go ahead and turn it down, as it fails WP:BIO and WP:NACTOR. Clarityfiend (talk) 07:11, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question about donations[edit]

I have donated every year. I am getting annoyed at the constant re barrage asking me for more money. In my opinion with all the “stuff” happening in the world today I’m pretty sure no one WOULD MIND if you guys took some ads. If you’re really that worried that certain parties would inflict their will then don’t take their money.

You must know how this looks. People are dying. Political unrest is stirring. Wikipedia is needed but those that can afford will still do so (like me) and the rest well they are probably burning gas in food lines. Right? Where the heck do you think this money is coming from right now. I would rather donate to my local food bank.

Do you people realize how high brow and out of touch your fund raising comes across right now???? WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC which is most likely affecting your base. I love Wikipedia but this seems like rather bizarre high brow that timing.

What I do for a living? I am having trouble keeping infrastructure like traffic bridges and community housing intact....

Just DO IT. Even if for a short period of time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.44.119.83 (talk) 03:33, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please create an account if you do not want to see the donation banners. If you have any concerns about donations, please direct them to [email protected]. We're uninvolved editors and have no say in what the Wikimedia Foundation does. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:37, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Units of measure for editing wikipedia content[edit]

Wikipedia is thought to be a resource for all humankind, regardless of their culture and nationality. As such I would expect its entries to be always described using the internation system of units, which is also the standard when it comes to science. Are there any general regulations on that when editing pages? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.181.173.173 (talk) 08:16, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

User who repeatedly blanked article now requesting deletion by PROD[edit]

Hello, I came across the article Mid-Am Racing Series during an anti-vandal patrol and found user:Grablife5 blanking the article with no reason. After three reverts and warnings the user blanked the page again and requested deletion of the page by PROD, with the reason "I will just put this data on the mid-am website. Series, imagery, are owned and copyrighted by me. Combative admins are not helpful" (they probably refer to me, but I'm not an admin). I restored the content and now have restored the PROD, however am not sure what to do now, especially given that the images are not uploaded by the user but by @Royalbroil:. I would be glad if someone would be able to help me out here. Thanks, Pahunkat (talk) 15:23, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: User:Jonesey95 has now removed the PROD and requested Grablife5 discuss on talk page. This will now have to go to AfD if they re-nominate for deletion. I guess my only question is how to deal with the COI. Pahunkat (talk) 15:29, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have just locked the page to put a stop to this edit warring. I will now take it to ANI, link to follow shortly. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 15:33, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot, I was really unsure what to do. Pahunkat (talk) 15:34, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Dodger67, thanks for the quick response. I think only extended-confirmed protection is needed. I put in a request at RFPP. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:39, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We have a response on Grablife5's talk page. Page protection hopefully will help start a discussion. Pahunkat (talk) 15:44, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, Jonesey95, you are correct. I will adjust the protection level. So, no ANI report (at this stage) please play nicely folks. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 15:48, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New articles on search engines[edit]

Does anyone know how long it usually takes for new articles to appear on Google and other search engines? Edge3 (talk) 17:49, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This gets asked a lot. New articles are not indexed until they are reviewed by a member of the New pages patrol, or after 90 days. This is a quality control measure. Please read Wikipedia:Controlling search engine indexing for more details. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:03, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull: Thank you so much! I figured we had a page that addresses this question, but I couldn't figure out where. I appreciate it! Edge3 (talk) 18:10, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Michael D. Turnbull: Sorry to bug you again, but I'm actually not sure if I created a page correctly. I started working on Freedom of Information Act (Illinois) in draft-space before moving it to article-space. This was the first time I created an article in "draft" mode so I may have messed it up. When I check the public logs for the page, no results appear at all. Would you mind taking a look? If I just need to wait for NPP then that's fine; I just want to know that I followed the right process. Edge3 (talk) 18:59, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your article was correctly created, and it has now been tagged as reviewed. Should appear in Google in a few hours. – Thjarkur (talk) 23:40, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Picture not accepted[edit]

Pardon my novice question, but this is the first time I've ever attempted to edit Wikipedia. On an aircraft page ("Douglas O-2") I am attempting to add a photograph of rare aircraft that my family took in 1940. When I try to upload the picture via the dialog box I get an error that says something about an automatic filter has determined that the picture is not contributory (or some word to that effect). There is already a picture of a BT-1 and BT-2 on the page, but not of a BT-2A. Is the filter saying that two pictures are enough or am I missing something?Chp49 (talk) 18:50, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Chp49: please use the Upload Wizard of commons.wikimedia.org (our central media project) directly. Victor Schmidt (talk) 19:58, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Will magic links be disabled?[edit]

Wikipedia has a few words which automatically turn into links: Help:Magic_links. The help page says that these are depreciated per a 2017 RfC, and implies that at some point these will stop working. There is no date given on the help page for when this might happen. Are there plans to disable the magic links, and if so when? The RfC mentions that a bot is supposed to replace all the magic links, but it seems there are still lots of pages that use them: is the bot not active any more? RudolfRed (talk) 21:15, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@RudolfRed: The bot is active: Special:Contributions/Magic links bot. Please give an example page. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:37, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: There are currently 10,000 pages using the ISBN magic link, 1400 pages using the PMID magic link and 2300 pages using the RFC magic link. At the bot's current rate, it will take around a year just to clear the existing backlog even assuming nobody else tries to add any in the meantime. ‑ Iridescent 21:44, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I did find the phab task for it, but no updates since July 2020, and comment history seems to suggest the links need to be fixed before the functionality can be disabled. RudolfRed (talk) 21:50, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am guessing they are waiting for the bot to finish the job and will disable the links then. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 12:44, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

iOs display problems[edit]

I know it’s not new, but very annoying and weirdly seems not addressed - it’s the notorious „tap to see to picture” problem, causing enormous disturbances rendering Wikipedia pages. (How do I post a picture from iPad?)

SVG version of English Wikipedia file[edit]

Currently, there is a JPEG diagram (File:JJ 3D stability diagram.jpg) uploaded to the English Wikipedia under the GFDL and CC BY-SA 3.0. I've created an SVG version of the image. Should I upload it to the English Wikipedia or to Wikimedia Commons, and under what license? Also, should I use both Template:Obsolete and Template:Vector version available on the original (as the banners state), or is the former redundant? LegionMammal978 (talk) 23:44, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@LegionMammal978: if you don't get any answers here, maybe ask at Commons:Help desk? Seagull123 Φ 16:23, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
LegionMammal978 According to the license with the file here it was "US Gov contribution to Review of Scientific Instruments". All US govt. work is OK for Commons, provided you quote the exact source. See, for example a file I uploaded, now at "Commons, here".. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:05, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
