Citing Lecture and Presentation materials, and a book via a website, 2nd try[edit]

Hi, I didn't get a response to this before it got pushed off the page, so I'm trying again. I'm looking for advice on citing a video lecture and it's accompanying pdf presentation materials in a single citation for the Lathe article. Does anyone have recommendations about how to do that? Here is the lecture, and I want to also cite pages 18-21 of the accompanying presentation materials. I've gone ahead and used {{cite web}} in the article for now , but I'm not happy that I can only cite the lecture video or the presentation materials:

  • Tomiyama, Testuo (2016-02-16). "Development of Production Technology and Machine Tools (presentation notes)" (PDF). OpenCourseWare: TUDelft. TUDelft. pp. 18–21. If you are using cs1|2 templates, you are limited to one source per template; that is the nature of the template design. There is nothing that prevents you from using both {{cite web}} to cite the lecture notes along with {{cite AV media}} to cite the video.

@Trappist the monk: Gotcha - is there any way to combine the two templates to show as a single citation? -Furicorn (talk) 19:17, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikitable question about using rowspan and colspan simultaneously[edit]

This is a question about the correct syntax (if that's the right word?) for using rowspan and colspan in a Wikitable. I seem to be able to use "rowspan" by itself. And I seem to be able to use "colspan" by itself. But, I can't seem to make both functions work together at the same time, with the same cell. So, what would be the exact "code" that I would type in my Wikitable if, say for example, I wanted a cell to span 5 rows and 3 columns? By the way, I want to use the "rowspan" function, if possible; not the "row height" function. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 02:33, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Joseph A. Spadaro: See Help:Table#Combined use of COLSPAN and ROWSPAN for an example. The syntax is simple like | rowspan="5" colspan="3" | Cell content. The hard part is building a correct table with it. If you have problems then post or link your attempt and say how you want it. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:39, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thanks. Hmmmmm. I dunno. I tried that. And it "screwed up" the whole chart. Let me type an example below (in a few minutes). Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 13:57, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@PrimeHunter: OK. Thanks. I am back, with my example. Below is my "original" chart. Then, below that, is my "revised" chart.

On the "original" chart, I want to add a "heading". The heading will state: Below is all of the updated information. I want this heading (cell) to span several columns and several rows.

So, I created my "revised" chart.

Everything is what I want, except for one thing. In the "revised chart", I want that "heading" to have more height (i.e., I want that row to be taller). So, as you can see, I can get the "colspan" to work well (namely, to "spread out" across all 4 columns). But, whenever I add in a "rowspan" function / code, everything gets screwed up. I tried with several variations of "syntax", punctuation, etc. It always screws up the rest of the chart.

Also: As I stated above: I want to use the "rowspan" function, if possible; not the "row height" function.

Original chart[edit]

Name Year Age State
Derek 1962 73 New York
Bob 2013 100 Hawaii
Charles 1875 3 Texas
Anne 2000 91 Florida
Edith 1984 39 Virginia

Revised chart[edit]

Below is all of the updated information.
Name Year Age State
Derek 1962 73 New York
Bob 2013 100 Hawaii
Charles 1875 3 Texas
Anne 2000 91 Florida
Edith 1984 39 Virginia

Any help (and explanation) is appreciated. Thanks! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 14:29, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Joseph A. Spadaro: That is not what rowspan is for. The purpose of rowspan is to make a cell which spans multiple cells somewhere to the right or left of the cell. Each row must have at least one cell starting in that row. That is a html rule and not specific to wikitext. A table-wide rowspan="5" would have 4 rows with no cells starting. And even if this had been allowed by html, it wouldn't change the height of the row. Rows are by default only as high as needed to display their content. There are many other ways to make a tall cell with blank space, e.g. blank lines made with <br />. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:03, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: OK. Thanks. So you are saying: that for what I want, I cannot use "rowspan", and I essentially have to use "row height" ... correct? (The problem with using "blank break spaces" is that it places the text at the top of the tall row and leaves a lot of blank white space in the rest of the tall row. As opposed to, perhaps, centering the text within a tall row.) You said there are many other ways? What are some? Other than the "row height function" and the use of "blank break spaces"? Or, rather, what's the easiest one? Thanks so much! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 16:45, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Joseph A. Spadaro: You cannot use rowspan. You can place <br /> both before and after the text. You can use style="height: 5em;" in the row or in the cell. You can use style="padding: 2em;" to control the whitespace around the text. I made an example with each of these four methods. There are others methods but four should be plenty. @PrimeHunter: Thanks. I really appreciate all the help. Thanks, also, for the help a few days ago with the Shakespeare User Box. Much appreciated! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:18, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Admininstrators[edit]

How do I become a Administrator??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shalohan (talkcontribs) 02:48, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Shalohan: See WP:RFA. LittlePuppers (talk) 02:54, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Shalohan: Administrators are typically granted the right after editing for several years and making tens of thousands of edits (if not more). During this time they will have demonstrated a thorough knowledge of Wikipedia policies and an ability to communicate effectively, helpfully and civilly with other editors. More information can be found at WP:ADMIN and WP:GRFA. Some useful links will be left at your talk page. Would suggest you study those carefully and gain experience in editing before you consider asking for any editing permissions. Cheers. Eagleash (talk) 03:00, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of "multiple failed attempts"[edit]

Hi, I have been receiving "multiple failed attempts" everyday. Apparently someone is trying a brute-force attack on my username. I am ignoring this emails, but it's really annoying. I changed my password to protect my account (something like more than 15 chars). Do you have any suggestions?--Joseph (talk) 08:55, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Joseph: You can disable the notifications at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo. You have a common name as username so it may just be people who think they have an account with their name. If you don't want the login attempts to happen for your username then you have to change it. See Wikipedia:Changing username. I almost never get such notifications and I have an admin account hackers would like. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:30, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Can't we enable WP:Two-step verification for all users?--Joseph (talk) 11:23, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We have enough problems with users who forget their password. Let's not make it a pain in the ass to log in for a large part of the users. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:55, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Merhaba Joseph. The idea of expanding (oathauth-enable) as an option for all users was discussed on Meta last year, but is for technical reasons not yet ready for wider use. There is, however, an OATH-testers global group for testing 2FA. To apply for (oathauth-tester), read M:Help:2FA carefully - recovering lost 2FA is said to be a pain in the aforementioned fleshy body part - and apply at M:SR/GP §Requests for other global permissions. How do i create a wikipedia Page?[edit]

Hi

I am new here.. need help in creating a wikipedia page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bollywoodbubbleofficial (talkcontribs) 14:19, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Step 1: Register an account that does not imply that you're here to promote a company. Ian.thomson (talk) 14:22, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Please read WP:USERNAME for details of Ian's point. After you have an acceptable user name, please quickly scan our policies and guidelines. Please take careful note of WP:COI and WP:PAID. Article subjects must be notable: see WP:NOTABLE. Be aware that there are disreputable companies and individuals that will offer to create a page for you for a fee. They have no special privileges and cannot prevent a page for a non-notable subject from being deleted. -Arch dude (talk) 15:19, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Name displayed in link to a Wikibook[edit]

Hi, The article Oberon (operating system) has a boxed link readiing "Wikibooks has a book on the topic of: Oberon". Is there a straightforward way to make the displayed title "Oberon OS" rather than just "Oberon"? Somewhere I noticed a mention of a parameter DisplayName, or similar, in a template but failed to make it work. Thanks, ... PeterEasthope (talk) 17:31, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • I fixed it, with a kludge to work around a bug in the template. {{wikibooks}} uses unnamed positional parameters and the third param is the display text. However, the template gratuitously adds a slash to the URL if there is a second param, even if the second param is empty, so the link goes to a non-existant page at wikibooks. My kludge was to add a redirect to wikibooks at Oberon/ to redirect to Oberon. I also moved the template to the 'external links section in the article, per the guideline in the template doc. In the future, please ensure that the wikibook page name for a book is the same as the title of the book. In the mean time, I'll take a look at the actual template code. -Arch dude (talk) 18:17, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Long before anticipating this snag I chose Oberon rather than Oberon OS for the book in consideration of brevity. If the name of the book should be changed, I have no objection. I wonder whether the redirect from Oberon/ to Oberon will cause another problem. Thanks, ... PeterEasthope (talk) 13:34, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I chose to redirect "Oberon/" instead of redirecting "Oberon OS" specifically to simplify a page move if you choose to make it. It should not cause a problem. -Arch dude (talk) 14:35, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The template failed both for an empty second parameter in {{wikibooks|Oberon||Oberon OS}} and for no second parameter which is possible to make with a third parameter present in {{wikibooks|Oberon|3=Oberon OS}}. It's fixed now. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:50, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for repairing the template, ...PeterEasthope (talk) 13:34, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Show Main Page in local time[edit]

Does anyone have a Gadget to do this?--Dabao qian (talk) 17:51, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dabao qian, in Preferences->Gadgets, there is an option "Change UTC-based times and dates, such as those used in signatures, to be relative to local time". Is that what you mean? --ColinFine (talk) 18:20, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Reply: No, I want to show Main Page (From today's featured article, On this day and Today's featured picture) in local time. Not comments.--Dabao qian (talk) 18:34, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, got it. You want what you see to update at your midnight. I don't know if that's possible, Dabao qian. I suggest asking at Talk:Main Page. --ColinFine (talk) 21:15, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It needs to be removed immediately. thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.254.82.72 (talk) 19:09, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Thank you for the information; if you see vandalism in the future, the user can be reported to WP:AIV. You may also edit the article to remove the vandalism yourself if you feel comfortable doing so. 331dot (talk) 19:14, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned Talk Page archive[edit]

There appears to be an issue with the archived Talk pages for the Otto Warmbier article. Due (I think) to the title of the article having been changed a couple of times, there is an orphaned page of archived comments here that is not accessible or searchable from the article's main talk page. --Muzilon (talk) 21:24, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have cleaned it up. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:43, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
