Security info box[edit]

Everywhere I move on Wikipedia, that box keeps popping up constantly and it's starting to annoy me. Any way to get rid of it so I can get on with editting Wikipedia? Any and all help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Alvin Seville (talk) 00:05, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I have ever seen whatever you might be talking about. Maybe this is coming from security software on your own computer. If no one else knows what you are talking about, you will have to give us more details: the name and version of your Web browser, operating system, and Firewall (networking)/antivirus software. Also give the exact text that appears in "that box." --Teratornis (talk) 00:21, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Are you viewing Wikipedia at url's starting with https such as https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Main_Page? That can cause a box to pop up in your browser. If you don't need the secure server then just use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page instead. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:39, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's what PrimeHunter said, was apparently logged onto the secure server at the time. I've taken your suggestion and now using the main page to logon and the security box has been gone since. Thanks!!!

Copyright[edit]

There are some Frames songs in their article. Why isn't that a copyright violation? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.66.147.183 (talk) 00:54, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

They are 40-second samples and can be claimed as fair use. Xenon54 01:06, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I should point out that both samples break WP:MS by being significantly longer than 10% of the length of each track. Each sample is roughly 40 seconds long, while the two original tracks are each roughly 4 minutes (240 seconds) long. -Seidenstud (talk) 02:24, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New features[edit]

I think Wikipedia should have these new features:

1. Users who are not admins can delete articles that they have created.

2. Users who are not admins can block themselves (and can only unblock themselves if they blocked themselves).

60.230.124.64 (talk) 01:59, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Users can easily delete any pages they created by placing the {{db-author}} template. An admin will delete it, as long as it is within reason of course. And why in the world would a user want to block himself? Chamal talk 02:08, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Charmal addresses your second point nicely. As for your first point, the idea was discussed recently (here) and rejected. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 02:11, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also wondering about the purpose of 2. Maybe Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/WikiBreak Enforcer is of interest. If you can unblock yourself if you know the password, and you can only log in to your account if you know the password, then what is the difference? Are you thinking about the possibility of somebody gaining access to a computer with a logged in account without knowing the password, and requiring the password to be typed when unblocking yourself? PrimeHunter (talk) 02:16, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just a point for clarity on {{db-author}} - it is only applicable "if requested in good faith, and provided the page's only substantial content was added by its author". – ukexpat (talk) 03:24, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request for feedback[edit]

Resolved

Howdy, I just participated in an unpleasantly heated AfD discussion about an entertainer with a passionate and vocal fan base. I'd like for someone with more experience to read and comment on this discussion. I'm not interested in overturning the decision. Rather, I'd like some comments about the tone, accusations, and sheer nastiness of it and appropriate measures for dealing with such things. For example, I was accused of being a shill with a hidden agenda and the like. What's the right forum for seeking such input? Thanks. --RandomHumanoid() 04:53, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there are a couple of forums available to you. Deletion review is one option. DRV allows other editors to determine whether or not the AfD was properly closed. If you feel the consensus was improperly judged, that's the place for you. If you were/are the target of personal attacks (that are ongoing), check out the administrator's noticeboard or the vandalism noticeboard. However, if things have died down, it may be best just to move on. I hope this helps. Cheers! TNX-Man 12:50, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! As I said, I have no interest in contesting the closure. I suppose this all comes down to differences in personalities, etc. Some people conflate rigor with bias but so be it. Discussions must be held regardless. Take care! --RandomHumanoid() 17:58, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Partily Protection on pages[edit]

Can Wikipedia doing section protection "Some sections of page can be edit but another sections can't"?

Full protection prevents updates, but no protect at all is easy to be vandalized.

I'm gamma to made a mental travel another dimensional. JustbeBPMF (talk) 05:58, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Particular sections of a page cannot be protected, but there is semi-protection which allows only auto-confirmed users to edit a page. Requests for protection can be made at WP:UAA WP:RPP. --Unpopular Opinion (talk) 06:31, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Table sorting problems in Firefox[edit]

Hello. I'm using FireFox 3.0.4 and I recently began experiencing problems with table sorting. On numerous pages such as 2008 Summer Olympics medal table and Template:Gold1/doc, the sorting functions have stopped working for me. When I click on a sort icon, the page jumps to the top and no sorting occurs, and a "#" is appended to the address in the process. Sorting worked fine for me in the past, but seems to have stopped only in the past few days to a week. Sorting still works for me on IE7. I cannot recall any recent changes to my system that can account for this.

Most interestingly, I cannot sort tables in Help:Sorting but I can on m:Help:Sorting (note the meta space tag). Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any ideas? Thanks. -- Tcncv (talk) 06:49, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It happens for me as well in Firefox 3.0.5 (Mac). I noticed that errors appear in Firefox's Error Log at Help:Sorting but not at m:Help:Sorting. This would probably be an issue to bring up at the Village Pump technical page. Noah 07:31, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's actually already been addressed there in the "Sortable tables & Firefox 3.0.5" section. The key note is "Simetrical already fixed this in SVN. The new code isn't live yet - those affected will likely have to simply wait until the site is updated." Happy waiting, Noah 07:34, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit it. Right click the image>Save image. Then edit it using Microsoft Paint (if you use windows) or GIMP. The upload it again by clicking "upload a new version of this file" on the file's page.--Unpopular Opinion (talk) 14:25, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Editing an article that is protected/semi-protected.[edit]

Resolved
 – Corruptcopper (talk) 17:27, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In an effort to edit the article for HIV I found that it was semi-protected. I have only edited one article on Wikipedia and I didn't have an account to do that. I joined and am happy to add new, pertinent information to the HIV article, however, I am not familiar with the process to do so.

Please advise on how I can get this permission or otherwise submit the information I'd like added to the HIV article or any other article that is protected.

Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Joshuakester (talkcontribs) 14:31, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, semi-protected articles cannot be edited by new users. You will be able to edit it once your account is 4 days old with at least 10 edits (see autoconfirmation). For now, you can start a new section on the talk page of the article and request addition of content using the {{editsemiprotected}} template. --Unpopular Opinion (talk) 14:36, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Closing 'Rename Page' Proposal[edit]

Does it take an admin to close a rename article proposal like this? TopGearFreak 14:32, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not unless a page needs to be moved over a redirect or other already extant title. If there is consensus for a move to a title that does not exist yet, any autoconfirmed user can make the move. Cheers! TNX-Man 14:41, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Then I can do it. But, I set up the proposal, would it be a bit WP:COI-ish if I closed my own rename proposal? TopGearFreak 14:45, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. You'll have to get someone else do do it. Dendodge TalkContribs 14:47, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Does anyone know when this editcounter will be working again? There's a link to it at the bottom of the 'My Contributions' page, called 'Contributions summary'. TopGearFreak 15:55, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The editcounter is apparently running off of yarrow (database server). See this for all server activity. All of those servers have been undergoing maitenance for the past week or so. §hep¡Talk to me! 21:54, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I was patrolling new pages when I ran across this article. I added a PROD tag using Twinkle. Now the article has disappeared, leaving only my tag, but the page history doesn't show my edit at all. I've tried purging and such, but no dice. What happened? TNX-Man 16:17, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit shows up in the history for me...weird. Hermione1980 16:25, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And now I can see it. I guess maybe the servers were behind? I don't know why Twinkle would have blanked the article though. TNX-Man 16:26, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I tagged this article for speedy delete a short while ago. It doesn't show up in my contributions list nor in the article's history page. See my comment below about servers getting out of sync. Truthanado (talk) 16:40, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Category loops[edit]

Would someone more expert that I am please take a look at Category:Mindanao Association State Colleges and Universities Foundation, Inc. and Category:Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges - one appears to be a subcategory of the other in an infinite loop and I am not sure how to fix it. Thanks. – ukexpat (talk) 16:32, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Servers getting out of sync[edit]

Resolved
 – Corruptcopper (talk) 17:26, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A comment, not a question. The Wikipedia servers seem to be getting out of sync. Several times in the last 30 minutes I have edited and saved an existing article, only to be told that it doesn't exist. I have had similar problems while patrolling the new page list. After clicking "Mark as patrolled", I get an error message saying I need to select a specific version. In both situations, I try again (sometimes 3-4 times) and it eventually works. I'm going to take a short wikibreak and let the servers rest for now. Truthanado (talk) 16:35, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe they are still hungover from celebrating the New Year? – ukexpat (talk) 16:42, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Or maybe they're still lost in the leap second. Truthanado (talk) 17:01, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Have you tried refreshing the article? Sometimes I start a new article to be told it doesn't exist. ~AH1(TCU) 17:14, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I have this happening too. I've refreshed the article and the same thing happens. Has Jimbo got enough donantions to get a server upgrade by now? Lugnuts (talk) 18:57, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is really getting frustrating. Articles are randomly there or not there. Changes may take or not. Can someone kick the servers? TNX-Man 18:58, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The problem appears to be ongoing and also affecting "New message" bars and "What links here". However, this is really an issue for WP:VP/T not the helpdesk. Geometry guy 20:28, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate Titles[edit]

I would like to submit an article on John L. Clarke who was a Blackfeet Indian artist in the early part of the 20th century, but there already is an article about another person named John L. Clarke. Is it appropriate to have multiple articles with the same title or should I expand the title of my article to include his Blackfeet name? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lppcarver (talkcontribs) 19:00, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest John L. Clarke (artist), as it appears to be available and may be a more intuitive search term. Cheers! TNX-Man 19:02, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Adding to Tnxman's comment, you also need a disambiguation page - John L. Clarke (disambiguation). See an example of disambig. page here: Gimp--Unpopular Opinion (talk) 19:07, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If there are only two John L. Clarkes with articles, a disam page is not really necessary - just add the appropriate WP:Hatnote template to each page referring to the other. – ukexpat (talk) 02:43, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Rated[edit]

In the article SS Bremen (1957), I had rate the article C-class for Wikiproject ships but when I saved page I saw that it was Start-class instead of C-class. Why? Aquitania (talk) 19:12, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that the B-class parameters are causing the template act oddly. If all of the parameters are not completed, or if some are set to "no", the template defaults back to start-class. Setting all of them to "yes" lists the article as B-class. My guess is that they override the initial class parameter, but I am not sure how to fix it. TNX-Man 19:18, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a quirk, it is a feature. The B-class parameters determine whether the article is B/C/Start. If certain parameters are filled, then it automatically assesses as C, if all are filled it automatically assesses as B. See the template documentation for details. Woody (talk) 21:49, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion?[edit]

I added the notability tag to this article: Xiaxue and since i doubt notability can be established i was wondering if the next step would be to nominate it for deletion - can this be done right away or is it appropriate to wait? is this the right place to ask? --Echosmoke (talk) 19:57, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the next step if you want it deleted is to start an AFD. This can be done right away, and yes, this is the right place to ask. Taking a first look at the article, I think she's pretty much notable, though. Suggest reading WP:BIO before starting an AfD. --Unpopular Opinion (talk) 20:02, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, so what given (or missing) in the article would make her notable? These are my thoughts: There are the 3 awards and since i ve never heard of them i dont know if they themselves are notable (but WP not having an article on any of them is an indicator?). There are some other claims that might qualify, but they are not referenced. There are ppl writing about her, but since its blogosphere-internal its doesnt qualify as secondary source? There seem to be 3 (notable?) local newspapers reporting smth about her, but nothing that is itself notable? Also, most of the references are either not accessible online (which of course doesnt invalidate them) or the links are broken. Since she is, if, most likely notable for being a blogger i was looking for guidelines that make a blogger notable, but there is nothing? (I guess this is not the place to discuss this in detail, but im trying to get a feel for what "makes" notability there) --Echosmoke (talk) 21:12, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
General notability guideline provides some good information on what may be needed to establish the topic as meet Wikipedia's notability requirement. -- Suntag 18:06, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's more than likely a template problem with {{Location map start}} and/or {{Location map marker}}. I'm not sure what the problem is, as I'm not that good with the advanced template code... Calvin 1998 (t·c) 22:43, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This was the fix. Per User talk:Obersachsebot the bot added interwiki links to a number of templates where it ought not to have. The bot operator tried to find them all but apparently missed this one. -- Rick Block (talk) 00:48, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do I alphabetize a subject in a list?[edit]

Hi, I recently created a page for 'Steve Cox (Australian artist)'. When I cross-referenced him into both the 'gay artists' page and the 'LGBT people from Australia' pages, he now appears in both pages under 'S', not 'C'. How do I rectify this and place him correctly? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Heathengod (talkcontribs) 23:57, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Add {{DEFAULTSORT:Cox, Steve}} to the page. See more at Wikipedia:Categorization#Category sorting. Note that they are called categories and not lists. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:02, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
