Manhattan in 1873[edit]

Voting period is over. Please don't add any new votes. Voting period ends on 6 May 2013 at 00:37:02 (UTC)

Original – Bird's eye panoramic view print of Manhattan in 1873. The Brooklyn Bridge was under construction from 1870 until 1883.
Edit 1 – Blank lines removed.
Edit 2 – Blank lines removed and crop.
Alternative 1 (LoC) - Include all aspects of original lithograph, approximately 2.5 times the resolution, and better colours. This is also more reflective of the original state of the artwork, which had a generous border as part of the image, although it wasn't quite evenly centred, so I did crop a bit. I find that for printing, a generous crop is usually best, since if you can't recrop it to fit the paper, you usually end up with some ugly white areas. Anyway, point is, if you prefer a different crop, please upload as its own image and use the {{Image extracted}} template.

  • Comment - there is a weird short black line a little to the left of the "central park". Can it be removed/corrected? Renata (talk) 23:58, 28 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • I don't really know what that is but I think it's part of the original work of this image. I'll try to fix it somehow. Mediran (tc) 06:34, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Definitely an artifact of some sort, there are several of them on the same horizontal line and they aren't in the scan on the wardmaps.com site given as the source. Kmusser (talk) 20:27, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose for now. I'd like to see that black line removed (highly unlikely it was part of the original image). Also, the white space around the image can be cropped. --WingtipvorteX PTT 16:30, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Are you sure we should crop the image since there are some wordmarks below the image saying Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1873 by Geo. Degen, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, D.C. Mediran (tc) 01:15, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, I had missed the text at the bottom. --WingtipvorteX PTT 18:50, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose original/edits of original http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/pga.04129/ shows that context has been lost. Engravings and lithographs of this period had a border and text; we shouldn't mangle them when we have a choice. A cropped version may be suitable in some uses, but shouldn't be the FP choice, or the default choice. Also, that scan has better colours, and, I think, a lot more resolution. I'm doing a restoration of the LoC image. It should be up by tonight, as it's about 4/5ths done. Adam Cuerden (talk) 06:34, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh.. thank you Adam Cuerden! :) Mediran (tc) 10:13, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I really hope you don't mind. It's just when I see a really featureable image, but one that could be a little better... I feel compelled to make sure it's featured =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 17:25, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Alternative 1 (LoC) There we go! I'll also support any reasonable crop, but I do think the "NEW YORK" should be included; generous borders help reusability, though. (And sticking close to the original presentation is rather good for the George Schlegel article.)Adam Cuerden (talk) 11:44, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
