Category:BBC historic farms series[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 13:25, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: There is no reason for both this and Category:BBC_historic_farm_series to exist, and that category has a superset of the articles in this category (which only contains BBC_historic_farm_series). This category was previously discussed for deletion, before that other category existed. At the time of that discussion, the contents of the category was turned into the sole article that is contained in this category. Given the current circumstances, I think it makes sense to go with a different choice than then. Gbear605 (talk) 23:31, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 13:26, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: A google search for "Old Delhi Residential Colonies" returns nothing outside of WP. Fuddle (talk) 23:07, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: This is a category routed in vandalism/POV/Attack Pi (Talk to me!) 21:50, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is not vandalism. This Category is related to an existing article List_of_military_brats#Indian_military_brats. Thanks. 2405:201:6401:87AE:790B:426E:3577:2343 (talk) 21:57, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 13:27, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: I assume that's the proper demonym. Capitalization in any case. Fuddle (talk) 20:00, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
However, "South Jutland" is not a current division of Denmark. South Jutland is a dab page, and the other variants of the title are all former adminstrative divisions. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:20, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Merge to Category:Punjabi-language mass media Timrollpickering (talk) 13:32, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Covered by Category:Magazines published in Pakistan. Category:Punjabi-language magazines could someday be added under Category:Punjabi-language mass media. Fuddle (talk) 19:53, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Académie française[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename all Timrollpickering (talk) 13:35, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per the spirit of WP:C2D, consistency with main article's name
Académie Française is the official institution in France for the French language. In English, this organization would be the "French Academy", in French it would be "Académie française" but as a result of the consensus from this Requested Move discussion, the Wikipedia name for the article is now "Académie Française" with a capital "F" and a suggestion from @Wugapodes: that a broader WP:RFC be started to help settle French naming conventions. The incongruity of having a Franglais name for the official French language organization is not lost on me and I would have voted for a different outcome in the WP:RM. However, I favor challenging RM outcomes in either WP:MRV or with a new RM. From my viewpoint, CFD should only second guess main article naming if there is a navigational impact unique to the category space. Pinging @Place Clichy and Armbrust: who participated in the speedy nom, below. - RevelationDirect (talk) 17:17, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy nomination discussion
  • Support all proposed renames to capital F. The basic Wikipedia principle at stake here is to follow what we find in well-edited mainstream English-language sources. Essentially this is a question that can be settled by empirical research rather than individual editor's opinions. An investigation showed that it is common practice to anglicize such names by capitalizing them as though they were English proper names. I once had an English teacher who explained it by saying this is what English readers expect, and that it aids rapid reading comprehension. However, we don't need a reason. As Wikipedia editors, it is not our job by our opinions (equivalent to original research) to "correct" or "fix" the way things are done in the world outside of the Wikipedia, rather it is our job to determine how things are done and to follow what is commonly accepted. --Robert.Allen (talk) 18:22, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. bibliomaniac15 02:33, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT. Sri Lanka has never been implemented conscription so it is unlikely this category will ever contain any other article than the eponymous Conscription in Sri Lanka. Obi2canibe (talk) 16:34, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Keep Conscription has taken place in Sri Lanka historically with the Rājākariya [1] and non-state sanctioned conscription by the LTTE in areas under their control, including conscription of children [2]. Hence this Category is valid and potential to grow. Cossde (talk) 05:21, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 13:28, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Eponymous category for a musical duo, without the volume of spinoff content needed to justify an eponymous category. One of the subcategories filed here doesn't really belong here at all, because an "Artists by record label" category does not properly belong as a direct subcategory of an eponymous category for the person or people who happen to own the record label -- that's categorization on loose association grounds, not a defining characteristic of the bands. But once that's removed, all that would be left is the eponym and the standard "band albums" category, which is not enough to justify an eponymous category. The result of the discussion was: Withdrawn by nominator Timrollpickering (talk) 13:40, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The already was a pre-existing category for composer who does not write songs, but contributes music only Richhoncho (talk) 15:56, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • WITHDRAWN BY NOM. Merge should go other way as Bagchi has written lyrics too. --Richhoncho (talk) 16:23, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose deletion. Not be merged because he has also written some songs. And a category of songs with lyrics by tanishk does not exist. Empire AS (talk) 15:15, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: upmerge, category only contains one article and one subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:39, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge I'm not sure if the 3rd level award is defining, but this intermediate category is definitely not adding navigational value. RevelationDirect (talk) 17:03, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: rename to align with article Normans in Ireland. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:23, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support There is some debate as to whether the initial wave of Normans was composed of Anglo-Normans or Cambro-Normans. It's probably useful to fudge this question by just calling them Normans. Laurel Lodged (talk) 17:41, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: speedy delete G7. In practice it was necessary to upmerge to Category:Villages in Turkey as Rathfelder had removed the articles from that category after creating this page as its sub-cat.– Fayenatic London 15:14, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SHAREDNAME. This category groups three villages from difft regions of Turkey, whose shared attribute is that they are all named "Yeşiltepe": Yeşiltepe, Aksaray; Yeşiltepe, Amasya; Yeşiltepe, Taşova. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 08:39, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: upmerge. bibliomaniac15 02:33, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SMALLCAT, after the main article was redirected. Suggesting deletion as nothing of the remainder should be upmerged to either parent cat. gidonb (talk) 04:02, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Upmerge I would say that an upmerge would be the logical step. The three subcategories are already there, but Shulem Deen isn't, so it should be upmerged. Debresser (talk) 20:30, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Debresser: No way! It's not a defining characteristic of this person. Read the article. gidonb (talk) 23:56, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That is already a discussion for that article's talkpage. In any case, if there will be what to upmerge, it should be upmerged. Debresser (talk) 10:05, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Shulem Deen is a WP:BLP. He is very much alive. Of course, we should not hold a separate discussion on its talk page (or the category talk page) whether to include him in this category! BLP is a Wikipedia policy not some essay. Category:Heresy in Judaism contains all the rest and probably already much more than it should because it really should be about Heresy in Judaism (i.e. the concept), not about alleged or even widely accepted heresies in Judaism, such as failed messiahs. The latter btw are already in Category:Heresy in Judaism and can perhaps be kept there if no better categorization scheme is found or exists. Right now there is nothing to salvage in Category:Heresy in Orthodox Judaism. gidonb (talk) 17:11, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 13:29, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Insufficient scope for a category. The article Blogging in Bangladesh was created just yesterday, and it is currently the only article in the category. I note that similar articles—such as Blogging in Iran and Blogging in Myanmar—do not include eponymous categories. – Lord Bolingbroke (talk) 01:24, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 17:52, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OCAWARD)
The Boettcher Foundation gives Boettcher Scholarships to high school student from Colorado to go to college. These articles are already in the alumni category for whichever college they attended and mention the award in passing in the early life/education section. Undoubtedly, these are promising high school seniors who were defined by the award for that year, but Wikipedia doesn't generally have articles on promising high school seniors per WP:NACADEMIC. What we actually have in this category are people who went to college with this scholarship and then later became notable for other things later in their lives. We have a Catch-22 where, when the award is defining enough for a category, they aren't notable enough for an article and, when they're notable enough for an article, the category is no longer defining. There wasn't a list so I created one here in the main article so no information is lost. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:19, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 13:30, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OCAWARD, WP:OVERLAPCAT) and WP:V
According to the header of this category, "This page lists recipients of the Edward Crosland Stuart Jr scholarship to Davidson College." We don't have articles on the Stuart Scholarship or Edward Crosland Stuart Jr., and the Davidson College article makes no mention of it. 2 of the 3 articles mention the award in passing and are already categorized under Category:Davidson College alumni; the 3rd appears to be miscategorized. There's nothing remotely defining about receiving financial aid with a school's named scholarship. I don't think the award is notable enough for an article but, if anyone wants to try, I listed the current contents here so no work is lost. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:19, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
