October 9[edit]

This is a list of redirects that have been proposed for deletion or other action on October 9, 2017.

St. John's (basketball)[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was Speedy delete CSD R3. Implausible search term where reader would add "(basketball)" disambiguator. St. John's basketball would be a more reasonable search term.—Bagumba (talk) 18:37, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects are too vague, it would mean anything to do with basketball in St. John's when the page is meant to be about an upcoming and unnamed team in the National Basketball League of Canada. The second is a typo of the same vague redirect. As both are new, they are unused. Yosemiter (talk) 15:54, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete The U.S. bias would be towards the NCAA basketball team, but there are lots of St. John's schools and most have basketball teams of some sort. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 22:56, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete second; it's new-and-implausible. Disambiguate first, since it can refer to the target or to the university basketball team. Nyttend (talk) 04:11, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was delete It seems nobody is interested in this, so deletion it is. If AngusWOOF or anyone else thinks Front engine should also be deleted then should explicitly nominate it. Thryduulf (talk) 11:51, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hinduism in Palau[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep those where Hinduism is mentioned (in nomination order: Palau, Kiribati, East Timor, and the Cook Islands); retarget Hinduism in Dominica to Religion in Dominica and Hinduism in Cuba to Religion in Cuba; delete the rest. As you can see, this was not a simple close, but simply calling "trainwreck" or "TNT" didn't feel satisfactory, especially since these have been discussed in batches before (I don't say this as a judgment against any editors who invoked those pages, however). --BDD (talk) 22:13, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Island edition of the places there are no Hindus. Recent Past RfDs have deleted all similar redirects, so I batched a few. Unsurprisingly there is no information at the target about Hindus in any of these places. We can safely assume there are zero or near zero Hindus in any of these locations given their demographics making these misleading redirects. Legacypac (talk) 16:21, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete those of the form Hinduism in (place) --> (place). No opinion on the other listed redirects, I could see both sides of that argument. Tazerdadog (talk) 07:44, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep all. If people using these terms go to the target pages and find religious demographic breakdowns showing that Hinduism is under the small "Other" breakdown, then they will have basically learned everything they wanted to know about the topic. ---- Patar knight - chat/contributions 05:06, 24 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all. Without mention of Hinduism at any of these targets, these redirects are misleading. -- Tavix (talk) 03:03, 27 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all except the ones expanded by Patar knight. I trust that the nominator has checked the targets and indeed found no content on Hinduism there. If a target has no relevant information, and if such information is unlikely to ever be added, then the redirects are at best confusing: readers expect search terms to take them to places where these terms are discussed, not to places where there's an absence of content that we intend the reader to take as an invitation to reach a conclusion of their own. – Uanfala 08:59, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • Updated !vote to reflect Patar knight's work. I'm wary of the ARDA database numbers (I don't have access to the source they're using so I can't check how reliable these numbers are), but in the absence of any further considerations I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. – Uanfala 10:21, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep some, i.e. those which point to pages with an explicit breakdown of religions in the given place, such pages tell the reader that there is no significant presence of Hinduism there as it is in the "Other" category. Delete some i.e. those which don't give a comprehensive breakdown of religions in the given place as readers will not be educated by those results. Thryduulf (talk) 12:20, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete all. There have been users creating "Hinduism in..." pages for quite a while (potentially same user). Serve no legitimate purpose unless there is a bona fide Hindu population, and discussion in the target article. ‡ Єl Cid of ᐺalencia ᐐT₳LKᐬ 16:30, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all. WP:TNT. Redirects should only be created if there is a decent writeup and sources summarizing Hinduism in the region, whether it be a historical presence or current demographics presence. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 22:58, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. It was pointed out in one of the previous discussions that deleting such templates would lead to an abundance of redlinks in various navigational templates, like here. Well, this was a result of the way these articles use the generic {{Oceania topic}} template, which forces a link for each country. To help with this there now exists {{Hinduism in Oceania}} which only contains links to the articles that actually exist. I've drafted also {{Hinduism in Africa}} (although I'm a bit cautious of deploying it yet) and it's trivial to create such templates for the rest of the continents. If someone wants to object to this heightening of the bar for inclusion in these navboxes, now is the time to. – Uanfala 00:12, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Redlinks would be good, as redirects or articles can be created when there is proper content, and those with zero population can be removed from the related navbox. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 15:33, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bad Court Thinggie[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete Bad Court Thinggie and retarget Bad Court Thingy to Lionel Hutz. -- Tavix (talk) 15:54, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not referenced or mentioned at target. Seems to be a name for mistrial invented by and exclusive to The Simpsons. Steel1943 (talk) 05:13, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • The joke exists because people have trouble remembering the actual term. Search on Wikipedia is still pretty lackluster. The redirect helps get someone on the right track. Sturmovik (talk) 11:38, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • I get the joke, but Wikipedia is not Wikia; this phrase is exclusively tied to The Simpsons. If this phrase is located somewhere on a The Simpsons-related article on Wikipedia, that would be a perfect place to retarget this redirect. However, as it stands, the redirect is not mentioned at its current target, and adding the phrase to the target could put WP:UNDUE weight to the connection between a fictional phrase created by comedic writers and the subject of "mistrial". Steel1943 (talk) 15:51, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The target is correct and Sturmovik explains why it is useful for some people, and I don't see it as harmful in any way. Thryduulf (talk) 15:40, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. It could reasonably redirect to Marge in Chains, but isn't mentioned there. We should assume our readers are more competent than Lionel Hutz. —Kusma (t·c) 15:50, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Marge in Chains as {{R from quote}} "I move for a bad court thingy" "You mean a mistrial?" Term has not been notably used outside of the episode context. See also "law talking guy". IMDb episode quotes Delete "Thinggie" variant, unless there's proof that thinggie is the script spelling on the episode. Delete is also okay if the term doesn't attract searches. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 15:56, 14 September 2017 (UTC) updated 17:04, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd think Lionel Hutz would be a better target, though it would still be best to incorporate the quote there or Marge in Chains to make the redirect more helpful for readers. --BDD (talk) 18:23, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget "thingy" to Lionel Hutz per AngusWOOF, and delete "thinggie" as an unlikely misspelling found nowhere on the Internet besides Wikipedia. Absolutely should not be mentioned at the current target per WP:PROPORTION (An article should not give undue weight to minor aspects of its subject), and if it's not mentioned there we shouldn't be sending readers there without explanation. 59.149.124.29 (talk) 02:09, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget and move to "Bad court thingy" and Delete "Bad Court Thinggie": Once the capitalization is fixed, and the uncommon misspelling deleted, this becomes acceptable (if only barely) as a Lionel Hutz catchphrase. Lwarrenwiki (talk) 05:46, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was Keep / No consensus There is consensus to keep Huo long guo and Huǒ lóng guǒ and no consensus regarding the other two as the rationale for deleting them no longer holds but there was no further discussion. Thryduulf (talk) 11:54, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Possible WP:FORRED redirects not mentioned in the target article. Steel1943 (talk) 01:17, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep There are over 180 countries and over 1,000 dialects, and each may have their own name for any plant using the Roman alphabet, and we do not list them all in articles, it would be UNDUE, redirects are the most efficient way to handle them. If you live in a polyglot area, you will most definitely encounter these names at an ethnic market, and Wikipedia is the data set most AIs use to answer queries. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 16:00, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Um, no, that's why we have WP:FORRED. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:17, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I added it to the section on regional names for the fruit in the article, A better target is Hylocereus. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 21:00, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete it seems to be native to Mexico and Latin America so these are translated names to bring them over to Southeast Asia. [2] Here's an article about it being imported into South Korea and Japan [3] If those names are presented in English there with that name besides "Dragon fruit", they could be listed in the article. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:17, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Huo long guo variants - I added "Huǒ lóng guǒ", it was more than 10 years ago so I don't remember what prompted me but I don't speak Chinese so I must have come across it in an English-language context. DopefishJustin (talk) 20:43, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep huo long guo/huǒ lóng guǒ and mention at target; used in English-language works [4]. No opinion on Nannetticafruit/Nanettikafruit. 59.149.124.29 (talk) 04:49, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was Delete both. Ruslik_Zero 20:26, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unlikely redirects due to a mixture of sort name, dashes, and the placement of "Explorer". Steel1943 (talk) 14:42, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete implausible serach term with those dashes and commas. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:01, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep both per WP:CHEAP - they are being used (33 and 79 times last year) and they are unambiguously referring to the target. I don't know why they are being used, but that is irrelevant. Thryduulf (talk) 18:53, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete both per nom. The stats are well within implausibly as well. -- Tavix (talk) 19:06, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Thryduulf as unambiguously correct redirects getting use. It's not that far from "Colón, Cristóbal - Explorer", which would be cleaner. ---- Patar knight - chat/contributions 05:30, 24 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - this looks to me like a subject heading from a library catalog database (they are often formatted this way with double dashes) so it may prove useful for external systems cross-referencing us. See e.g. Library of Congress Subject Headings. DopefishJustin (talk) 20:43, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete both as improbable and irregularly formatted. Lwarrenwiki (talk) 05:48, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • 'Delete all as implausible misformat of modifiers --Lenticel (talk) 00:38, 13 October 2017 (UTC)w[reply]
  • Keep; I've found LCSH useful in finding articles — just copy the SH from the catalogue record and paste it here to reach the article. Per my note in Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2017 October 10, I'm always seeing space-missing-before-punctuation errors in catalogue records when I'm at work; this isn't an implausible error. And it's quite common to see non-English headings in items catalogued by libraries in non-anglophone countries. Nyttend (talk) 04:15, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Redirects from subject headings are fine, but even without the misspacing (we shouldn't create redirects for every typo that can appear in a catalogue), this is highly implausible due to the combination of an English qualifier ("--Explorer") with a non-English personal name where the standard English form of that personal name is widely known (and subject headings are meant to use standard forms). – Uanfala 09:35, 18 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per Uanfala. Librarian perspective here: people go in the Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF), not LCSH. Here's the record for Columbus. While he's identified in the record as an explorer, it's not used as a qualifier, and it wouldn't use hyphens or a dash even if it were. (It would use parentheses, as in this example.) If this were the exact LC heading, I could maybe imagine people copying and pasting it. I have no issue with {{R from sort name}}, for example. But I agree with Uanfala that the combination here is implausible. --BDD (talk) 17:49, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was disambiguate. So far there are at least two entries (the judge title and the journal) that pass WP:DABABBREV. In the absence of any WP:PTOPIC considerations, this makes for a valid disambiguation page. – Uanfala 10:12, 17 October 2017 (UTC) (non-admin closure)[reply]

I don't think this initialism should be restricted to this one man. I mean, I know he is a MASSIVE political figure, especially in Europe, but he gets a monopoly on this?  — Mr. Guye (talk) (contribs)  02:59, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

News articles seem to mainly reference JCJ Architecture. But yes, there's also the Journal of Criminal Justice and Venderheyden. Then there's the JCJ bear named after James Comey Jr[5] and Jinchengjiang District nicknamed JCJ District. JcJ is French for PvP in video games, although that can be excluded for WP:FORRED [6] It's also a ticker symbol of sorts for implied correlation index [7] although that isn't mentioned in the Correlation trading article. Also an abbreviation for Junior Civil Judge in District_Courts_of_India [8] AngusWOOF (barksniff) 03:12, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom — it seems that JCJ would make a reasonable candidate for a dab page, but should not be kept as a redirect to one person who may not be the primary disambiguation target. Lwarrenwiki (talk) 05:53, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dabify per User:AngusWOOF's findings --Lenticel (talk) 00:39, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate; if there's more than one likely meaning, why delete? Nyttend (talk) 04:16, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Don't dabify because none of the article contenders bar one (District Courts of India) actually state that the subject is known as "JCJ" or even mention "JCJ", as required by WP:DABABBREV. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 12:11, 13 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
