Information icon Hello, I'm Mr.Sarcastic. I wanted to let you know that I reverted one of your recent contributions —specifically this edit to Hem Chandra Chowdhury—because it did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Help desk. Thanks. Mr.Sarcastic (talk) 15:09, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Am part of the family. Please advise. Wikiu08372 (talk) 15:10, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You appear to be repeatedly reverting or undoing other editors' contributions at Hem Chandra Chowdhury. Although this may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is known as "edit warring" and is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, as it often creates animosity between editors. Instead of reverting, please discuss the situation with the editor(s) involved and try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to lose their editing privileges. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, and violating the three-revert rule is very likely to result in loss of your editing privileges. Thank you. 331dot (talk) 15:27, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Could you assist? 72 year old mother here :) Wikiu08372 (talk) 15:29, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You have started to discuss the issue on the article talk page, that is where any discussion about the article should take place. Please stop attempting to add the information at this time until the discussion progresses and various issues are resolved. Please read about conflict of interest as well. 331dot (talk) 15:33, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry? Wikiu08372 (talk) 15:34, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please confine the discussion to Talk:Hem Chandra Chowdhury, where you already are. 331dot (talk) 15:48, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, Wikiu08372. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Hem Chandra Chowdhury, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:27, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can you explain to me how I might go about editing these things into our grandfathers page? Happy to “comply” but need some help. Wikiu08372 (talk) 02:30, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I will be rather blunt here, because it needs saying: NOBODY CARES ABOUT HIS HEIRS AND DESCENDANTS! An article in Wikipedia is about the subject, and relevant information about that subject. Unless one or more of his descendants are notable in their own right, there is no reason to put them into the article. At this point, the article in its current state does a very bad job of establishing who Hem Chandra Chowdhury was and why the world should care. You have sort of disclosed your own conflict of interest here, and at this point you would be advised (and indeed have been advised) to place links on the talk page of the article, giving other editors without your COI a chance to improve the article with links to reliable published sources for the information. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:30, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you don’t, many easterners care deeply about legacy. This seems ridiculous. And now half the page has been deleted. Wikiu08372 (talk) 17:01, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of Conflict of interest noticeboard discussion[edit]

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard regarding a possible conflict of interest incident with which you may be involved. Thank you. Orange Mike | Talk 17:12, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What is this? Wikiu08372 (talk) 17:22, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hem Chandra Choudhury[edit]

Hello. I suspect the time difference means you will not see this until the morning where you are, but let me see whether I can explain a few things plainly. You have been given some informational links but may not have realized that's what they are, or understood what you saw there; it can be a bit of a challenge to grasp how Wikipedia differs from other sites on the internet.

First of all, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and universal in scope (not just for specialists in one area of knowledge or fans of one kind of thing), so we have standards for what can be included, which we refer to as "notability". For most topics (obvious things like the Olympic Games and medal winners in them, oceans, mountains, countries, cities, towns, etc., elements of the periodic table ... are exempt), this means other reliable sources (including print encyclopedias) have written about them in detail. There's a short summary here (that's a link, and the page has links to pages with further explanation of terms). There are special "notability" criteria to try to cover topics that may be encyclopedic but be harder to justify having a page on, or be less familiar to non-specialist editors; the one for biographies is here. But all of this is about whether the topic is potentially useful to readers of the encyclopedia, not about whether it's interesting, or in danger of being forgotten otherwise, or important to fans or to a person's family. Sometimes we have a list of rulers inside a page on a place, or as a separate page, just as we sometimes have other kinds of lists. But for Hem Chandra Chowdhury to have a page in the encyclopedia, the page needs to demonstrate, by what it says about him and by the references cited (footnotes) that he is "notable". Otherwise, you should remember him elsewhere. (I see that there is a nice, detailed, clearly written page on the Banglapedia site: here.) And if he does have a page here, it's not for the family or even for people who might want to visit his palace, but for all readers, so it should only include information about him, based on cited sources. (We try very hard to put in the sources for everything, both because that's an important part of why we have most of our pages, but also so the reader can check and read more.)

Also, because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, one of our basic rules is neutrality (here's the policy). This means we discourage editors from writing about their relatives (and especially themselves), because it's extremely hard to be neutral under such circumstances. And we have strict rules against more than one person sharing an account, so that editors are held responsible for their edits, and against editing for pay or any other kind of consideration without making a declaration of who made the payment and for what edits (and even with such a declaration, it is still much frowned on). Both the family and the pay issues are touched on in the conflict of interest policy link you were given above. So when you say the page was created by some young Bangladeshis, you raise suspicion in my mind that there was a commission or account-sharing involved at the time, both of which are actually against the rules. And when you use "we", I am hoping you mean yourself and the rest of the family, rather than that more than one person is using this account. (And these policies are why an editor reported the article at the Conflict of Interest noticeboard, which you saw just above this section.)

Anyway, as you have noticed, most of the article has been stripped out. It turned out to be badly referenced and to have a lot of material that was not about Choudhury himself. (I was hoping to find some information about Indrani Roy to make a separate page on her, but was unable to.) I apologize for the sharp tone of some of the edit summaries; the editors were forgetting that you are new to Wikipedia and don't necessarily understand what should be in an article, but still, I am sorry they wrote such dismissive things. And an editor has now started a discussion to have it deleted; you will find that discussion here, and I assume you will want to argue there that the page should be kept and not deleted. Remember what I wrote above about our criteria for "notability", and if you do post there, the most helpful thing would be if you can point to sources about him. They do not have to be online: printed books are fine, and so are old newspaper articles, but we would need all possible information including title, author, newspaper name, publication date or book year, book publisher, page number if you have it. You may of course decide that you would rather the article be deleted; in that case, say so. The discussion will probably run for one week (occasionally they are closed early; sometimes tehy are extended for a second week.)

I hope this has made things a little clearer, and I do appreciate your trying to help us build the encyclopedia. Yngvadottir (talk) 22:30, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. Will reply shortly. There are not multiple users on this handle as the Orange Mike guy suggested. Wikiu08372 (talk) 22:34, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
