Welcome messages

Thanks for doing New Page Patrol. Where you put a speedy tag on an article, and the author is new and has no Welcome message on their talk page, it is a good idea to add one before the speedy notice - it makes it friendlier and less WP:BITEy, and gives them useful links so that they may learn and do better next time. {{firstarticle}} is a good one in those circumstances: it should be subst-ed, so you would type {{subst:firstarticle|articlename}}. There is an oddity about that one: it automatically adds your signature, so for once you shouldn't add ~~~~. There is good advice for speedy taggers at WP:10CSD and WP:A7M. Well almost every film from the early Oscars have a page now

Added Wonder of Women a few days ago. Which means every film from the first 3 Oscars have a page. Now there is a page for a film named The Right to Love but its a different one then the one that was nominated, even if the same year.-which I just put as a template on some pages as The Right to Love. (On such stuff like the cinematographer page) Overall this is looking nice-since unless if I'm mistaken, I believe that is the only film now that has no page from the first 10 Oscars that is not a short film or nominated in the short live Dance cat. Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. The following links will help you begin editing on Wikipedia:

Please bear these points in mind while editing Wikipedia

The Wikipedia tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and discussion pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~ (the software will replace them with your signature and the date). Again, welcome! re: Oscar nominated cinematographers

Great work. Yes, it's tough to find sources, but the main Oscar page is a good place to start. For example, this is the page for the 3rd Academy Awards to use as a WP:RS. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 19:00, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

There actually was a reference in Jack Alexander Brooks, but it was buried in a syntax error. I've now fixed it. It's not a good reference, but it's something. I've thrown a refimprove tag on the article; maybe somebody else can do better. --Alexbook (talk) 02:44, 1 February 2014 (UTC) Yeah it was like how earlier tonight I found some film that had the wrong name listed as a director for years as someone changed it and never had it go back to normal. Introducing Twinkle

Hi there. I noticed that you help out in tagging new pages for maintenance or for deletion. I wanted to introduce you to Twinkle. Twinkle is a set of javascript functions that give autoconfirmed users many new options to assist them in anti-vandalism, tagging pages for maintenance or deletion, provides rollback links, welcome users, warn users, and much much more.

Many Wikipedians use Twinkle. So why not join the crowd? It's free and easy to use. Before using, you may want to read the Twinkle Documentation to familiarize yourself with the features. You may find that your editing experience on Wikipedia is much easier with this tool. Thanks, and I hope I helped! K6ka (talk | contribs) 16:49, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Just wielding your powers for yeilding sake is an abuse of power and it is against Wikipedia's policies. If you Bothered to take the time to read the correspondence between myself and Wgolf you would realise that Wgolf KINDLY asked me to categorise my Article- Something that such an EXPERT like you did not pick up on. Thanking him and asking him to remove the box was purely based on the Box regarding the categorization. I Was at no point referring to the hideous box at the top. But people like you and Santaku and Huon on the live desk are DRUNK with power! I am systematically and speedily working on my referencing so that I can move to other articles. Nice to meet you, Wgolf! I got a notification saying you had reviewed the page I just made, Bluebird (DC Comics), but for the life of me I can't figure out how to see the review. re: Templates for winners of best visuals, makeup and sound editing?

Hi. The easiest thing to do is copy the layout of one of the existing ones, and then populate it with the relevant names. A bit time consuming, but worth doing. Article creators

Hi again Wgolf, thanks for reporting all these foreign-language pages at WP:Pages needing translation into English, and thanks for the thankyou concerning Hoërskool Jim Fouché. Someone else found references to add. But I'd like to remind you that the editors who create these pages - in particular the foreign-language ones - are very often new. Could you try hard not to bite them, please? And especially, let them know when you change tack and remove the speedy deletion template? Being told your article is up for speedy deletion must be very frightening, especially if your English is weak enough that you uploaded it in a foreign language, so it's nice to tell them when it's no longer at risk of that. (I did this for the Afrikaans-speaking editor. There are also some non-English welcome messages listed here that may be useful.) Thanks for understanding. Nice work on creating the article. I've added a better source for the Oscar ref, instead of using IMDB. See WP:CITEIMDB to try and avoid using it as a source, if possible. Thanks. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 19:25, 7 March 2014 (UTC) Thanks-on one of the costume winners I added recently I realizes I accidently had the wrong name listed in the default sort box and just fixed that. Now I'm adding the winner of costumes for Ben Hur. Quite a few of the pages on the 2013 Oscars seem to have just a ref to the Oscars main page instead of any certain place-those might need a look at. I've added a dozen or so more films to the list, but he worked on so many that it would probably require a separate filmography article if they were all included. A lot of his work seems to be in Poverty Row, so that might explain it. They often shot the whole movie in four or five days, so there wasn't a great deal of time for quality camera work. Lord Cornwallis (talk) 02:38, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, it looks like it is the same guy (although I couldn't be 100% certain). I've come across other cases in the past where IMDB has listed the same person twice using different credited names. Lord Cornwallis (talk) 02:31, 29 March 2014 (UTC) Or of course you find the classic someone who was not born yet having a credit before they were born on there. Its a common name, so you are never sure. Still tough call. Wgolf (talk) 02:33, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

I'd just be bold and treat them as the same. If they do turn out to be separate people, they can always be split apart again at a later point. Lord Cornwallis (talk) 02:59, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I'd turn the redirect into an article (assuming they've been nominated for an Academy Award, of course). The other person you mentioned reminded me of some people from the 1940s in the art direction category who had one single film credit, but with an Academy Award nomination. Rollback

I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! —Tom Morris (talk) 06:24, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

A cup of coffee for you!

Hi Wgolf,

I accidentally published an article which I just started to work on ("Experiential Travel"). I didn't know how to delete it from wikipedia myself so thanks for putting it on the list. Will I be eligible to start a new article about the same topic once this one is deleted? Thanks a lot for your help! Konstanze Riede (talk) 20:18, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for reviewing all my Mississippi articles. This has been my goal. Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:59, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Dates on dab pages

Thanks for adding Steffo to the Tornquist disambiguation page, but please remember to add birth &/or death dates, when available, for people on dab pages. I've added his date of birth, from the article. PamD 21:35, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Hey WGolf, I appreciate your concern in terms of deleting the page 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, yes it may be 9 years from now, but recently FIBA has launched already its bid process for the 2023 Hosting [1], as simultaneous with the selection for 2019. So it should be considered as a big development for the creation of the page . From May 2014-15 there will be news circulating this article so its now time for the creation of the page. Feel free to comment if you have other issues to settle Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maiey28 (talkcontribs) 02:59, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks very much for reviewing all of my articles. It must take quite some dedication to read each one, check for errors, formatting and all that. I really appreciate the work you do. 3world Kid (talk) 22:05, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Something strange happening when using WP:PAGCUR?

Hi, Wgolf. I received notifications regarding changes made by you to Oleynik, Melnychuk, Sydorenko and Kuzmenko with no edit to the pages and no edit summary. They're all dated for 2 February, 2014, yet none show up it your contributions.

I'm wondering whether 'Page Curation' is triggering off some false readings when you browse through pages (i.e., interpreting a check as an 'nx' without leaving any form of edit summary).

Do you have any way of tracking whether it's done the same to other normal checks using it on pages not on my watchlist? I was considering installing it for my own usage, but don't want to deploy a buggy tool. Cheers, in advance, for any info you could supply! --Iryna Harpy (talk) 03:22, 2 February 2014 (UTC) That is odd-I don't think I have even gone to those pages.

Wgolf (talk) 03:23, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Hmm. Something weird going on. Would you like me to forward my email notifications to you for your reference? --Iryna Harpy (talk) 03:26, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

It's okay, but it looks like it might be a bug. Wgolf (talk) 03:27, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

I suspect so. You should probably report it. I'll send on the email notifications (should you need to reference them for reporting purposes). --Iryna Harpy (talk) 03:30, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
Actually, rather than starting off a labour-intensive troubleshooting session for what may have just been a momentary glitch, I've kept the emails and a screen-capture of my watchlist. If you get any more reports about PAGCUR doing the same thing to other articles, just leave me a quick note on my talk page and I'll be able to access them for you. Happy editing! --Iryna Harpy (talk) 04:11, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
Just to let you know that another list of these has appeared on a sequence of Ukrainian surname disambiguation pages (Shvets, Polishchuk (surname), etc.). Is Page Curation supposed to leave an automatic edit summary? Something is definitely going wrong. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 23:18, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

I did mark a bunch of surname pages as patrolled earlier

Wgolf (talk) 23:19, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Shouldn't the program automatically add a generic edit summary? If so, it isn't working as the summary fields are being left blank. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 23:41, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
Pardon me for jumping in, just wanted to clarify that the email notifications received by Iryna are not a bug but a standard feature of the MediaWiki software. They are sent every time the status of the page is changed (reviewed, deleted, undeleted) or its protection level is increased or decreased. These changes are not recorded in the edit summary, but in the page logs: [2]. Regards, —capmo (talk) 20:58, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
@Capmo: Thanks, but not quite my point. I'm questioning whether it shouldn't provide an automated edit summary in order that page watchers can instantly identify what the change was when there is nothing detectable. Deleted, undeleted, page protection, upping page protection, etc. is obvious. Reviewed (where there is is no change identifiable even in as much that the page history fails to show any activity) is irritating to very active contributors, such as myself, who suddenly receive multiple change notifications where no change is listed and no edit summary is provided. I am simply suggesting that page curator provide a simple summary ('Reviewed' springs to mind!) as do all of the other tools commonly used here. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 01:07, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
In fact, changes to page protection are not obvious either, we receive a generic "the page was changed" email message similar to the ones sent when pages are reviewed. But once again, these are standard MediaWiki email messages, I'm not sure if a script tool as Page Curator can change them. —capmo (talk) 18:24, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Deletion of Nicaraguan Film Historian

Hello there, I noticed the deletion request and in some ways I think that you are right because I couldn't another Nicaraguan film historian HOWEVER there should be an article perhaps about Latin American Film Historians. I agree with the deletion as I couldn't find another film historian other than Ms. Gaitán Morales. I agree for deletion of the Nicaraguan Film Historian article. --Fénix8 (talk) 02:54, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

May 2014 disambig contest: let's do it again!

Greetings fellow disambiguator! Remember back in February when we made history by clearing the board for the first time ever, for the monthly disambiguation contest? Let's do it again in May! I personally will be aiming to lead the board next month, but for anyone who thinks they can put in a better effort, I will give a $10 Amazon gift card to any editor who scores more disambiguation points in May. Also, I will be setting up a one-day contest later in the month, and will try to set up more prizes and other ways to make this a fun and productive month. Cheers! bd2412 T 18:51, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

re: Well kind of have taken a break from adding names

Thanks for your hard work on this. It's amazing how many Oscar related people don't have articles. I was even adding films from the 1940s and 1950s that were nominated in the minor categories in the not to distant past too. Thanks again! Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 06:14, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks

... for reviewing the articles I have been posting for the different Warner Bros. short film series. I have debated whether or not this badly neglected film genre, the theatrical film running under an hour in length and largely ignored on television and DVD, would generate enough interest among the movie fans. My only request is that you give me a little more time to double check my accidental "Dablinks", especially since I plan to do a rather lengthy links-filled one on "Vitaphone Varieties" sometime soon. Haven't figured out the trick of proofing these before saving the document yet, so I have to make any corrections afterward with that "dablinks.py" page.

As the title pages that I have added to a cluster of these state, everybody is free to add and correct anything on them... spelling, name and title additions, etc. My only goal is to get enough of them noticed so we can see more on Turner Classic and on DVD. Jlewis68 17:51, 17 April 2014 (UTC) Should be done with them for a while. I debated conquering the other film studios and their short subject series, but it is best to wait to see what kind of response these get. Hopefully, a few "Eagle Eyes" will make any corrections that I missed (despite all of my proofing). Thanks again for reviewing.Jlewis68 15:58, 29 April 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlewis68 (talkcontribs)

Reviewed

I periodically receive notifications that you have "reviewed" new articles that I have created. What does that mean? (Part of my curiosity stems from the fact that I don't think you've made any edits to these pages, so it's hard for me to figure out what "reviewed" means). Thanks. About Der Klassiker - who knew?

Hi Wgolf! Wow - it seems "Der Klassiker" is the name given to matches in a long-standing rivalry in German football. I certainly didn't know that until it popped up for speedy deletion. Pete aka --Shirt58 (talk) 11:53, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your feedback. I will add some reliable sources tomorrow, so please don't delete it. Thanks, Happy138 (talk) 20:25, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

I added the sources you requested. Please remove the deletion request. Thanks for your attention, Happy138 (talk) 14:12, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Some stroopwafels for you!

OK, so these are Dutch, not German, but then again, the German language calls itself something that sounds a little like "Dutch", so close enough.

Thanks for reviewing the stub. Psu256 (talk) 20:32, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
