Tech News: 2024-11
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 March. It will be on all wikis from 14 March (calendar). [1][2]
- After consulting with various communities, the line height of the text on the Minerva skin will be increased to its previous value of 1.65. Different options for typography can also be set using the options in the menu, as needed. [3]
- The active link color in Minerva will be changed to provide more consistency with our other platforms and best practices. [4]
- Structured data on Commons will no longer ask whether you want to leave the page without saving. This will prevent the “information you’ve entered may not be saved” popups from appearing when no information have been entered. It will also make file pages on Commons load faster in certain cases. However, the popups will be hidden even if information has indeed been entered. If you accidentally close the page before saving the structured data you entered, that data will be lost. [5]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on March 20. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [6][7]

Question from AtlantaWeatherChaser (03:07, 17 March 2024)
Hey! So I know that there is a portion of the Newnan EF4 tornado but not fully in depth of it. I was wondering where to start to make it and what sources have the best references for weather articles. --AtlantaWeatherChaser (talk) 03:07, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hiya, @AtlantaWeatherChaser! You can start working on it by creating a draft on the Newnan EF4 tornado, given that if it meets the general notability guideline or notability guidelines for events. Also, I can't really give an answer for what sources have "the best references" for weather-related articles, but if you're looking for what sources are reliable, I think sources such as the National Weather Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and even local media and news sources that cover weather information are reliable, for a start. Feel free to ask further questions about finding more reliable sources. Thanks, and happy editing! ~ Tails Wx (🐾, me!) 00:56, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Rainier28 (01:48, 20 March 2024)
Hi Tails,
I'm trying to edit the biography of Gerard Dubois (chef). I made a writeup with the help of chatgpt. I edited the content for Gerard Dubois, but DanCherek keeps on deleting all the information.
How can I edit Gerard's biography on wikipedia? --Rainier28 (talk) 01:48, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hiya, @Rainier28! I highly don't recommend using ChatGPT to write or add information to articles, you can see Wikipedia:Large language models for further information regarding the use of ChatGPT and other LLMs on articles. Additionally, I'll have to agree with DanCherek here – it was not only promotional, but also entirely unsourced, adding on to an article that adheres to the biographies of living persons policy. However, if you'd like to add the content back, I highly encourage you not to use ChatGPT to write it, shouldn't read promotional, and every claim and statement should be referenced to reliable sources. Thanks! ~ Tails Wx (🐾, me!) 14:28, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from EoinOT (00:15, 22 March 2024)
Hi! I'm new to being a user at Wikipedia. I was trying to message another user recently, but haven't been able to figure out how. I tried the "email this user" option, but I just got an error saying: You cannot send email to other users on this wiki. --EoinOT (talk) 00:15, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Hello @EoinOT; welcome to Wikipedia. Usually, email is only used for confidential matters; the preferred method of communication is their talk page. The user likely enabled a setting that does not allow new users to email them to prevent harassment. If you need to email them for a confidential matter, you can ask them to email you on their talk page; otherwise, just put your message on their talk page. Hope this helps, queen of 🖤 (they/them; chat) 01:32, 22 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Windrush3
hello Tails. Are you able to create and publish a simple wiki page? Windrush3 (talk) 12:02, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Windrush3! Since I'm not really active on Simple English Wikipedia; I don't have an article there. I'm assuming that creating a page on Simple Wikipedia is basically the same as creating one here; so probably yes! ~ Tails Wx (🐾, me!) 14:00, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- Ho
- thanknyou for replying.
- Can I send you my sandbox page? Or how to go forward?
- actually that was a non technical use
- if the word “simple”!!
- I just have a simple
- page I want to publish… Windrush3 (talk) 14:04, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, alright! So, you moved your sandbox to a userpage, with the userpage belonging to a non-existent user. I've gone ahead and reverted it and marked the userpage for speedy deletion, just an FYI. Your sandbox isn't affected, however. Next, is the subject notable? We'll need reliable, secondary sources of the subject with significant coverage of them, and so far, it doesn't seem like the subject, Reverend Mark Farr, meets notability guidelines, unfortunately. I'll be happy to take a look for any sources that establish notability of Farr if you'd like, though! (Courtesy ping, @Windrush3!) :) ~ Tails Wx (🐾, me!) 14:30, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- So regarding the notability guidelines, being president of a fairly well known international organization working with dialogue between Russia and the US isn’t enough ? Or of the John Lewis organization
- Not seeking to be picky, trying to understand Windrush3 (talk) 14:33, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- I put in some sources from Brookings, C-Span, global peace foundation, Eurasia Center, not sure if you saw them Windrush3 (talk) 14:34, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- It's alright! Understanding notability guidelines might be a bit difficult or frustrating at first; but you'll later know which sources establish notability or not.
- So, the general notability guideline states:
A topic is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject.
- This applies to any biography of a person, though WP:NBASIC is a much clearer, specific notability guideline for people. It's basically the same thing.
- For Farr, I'll do a source review below:
- The C-Span source just leads me to the homepage, and not a specific page. Is there a specific one?
- The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training source doesn't even mention Farr, despite its reliability, so that's not a source to establish notability, unfortunately.
- The American Academy of Diplomacy source – same thing with the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training source.
- The US-Russia relations source – again, same thing with the above two sources.
- The Brookings source – we're getting there, but just a profile with two sentences? Not much to establish notability of Farr.
- The Eurasia Center source – reliable, has significant coverage – but not a secondary source, unfortunately.
- The Global Peace Foundation source – same thing with the Eurasia Center source: reliable, significant coverage attained, but not a secondary source!
- So, Farr needs work in establishing notability of him. Let me know if you need help in finding sources, or if you need any example sources that are reliable, secondary, and have significant coverage of a person! There could be more outside of the noted sources above; though I'll need to take a more thorough, in-depth search for sources. (Courtesy ping Windrush3!) :) ~ Tails Wx (🐾, me!) 14:58, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
