About your user page...

Your page is incredibly interesting! I can see you're into a lot of specific things about history and the middle ages and eras like that. It's also very cool that you are into Paganism - I have been doing some research on it lately, so it's quite fun for me to see someone who shares the very same religious beliefs as the ones I have read about.

As for your love for Gaelic culture and the Celts (and also the fact you mention your interests in local history), I can only assume that you are also from the island of Ireland? I live in the North personally, so I'm not very far away from you.

Hopefully I see you around Wikipedia during my travels. Cheers!

D2kZ (talk) 04:39, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind message! It's lovely to find someone with similar interests. I actually don't live in Ireland (I live in Wisconsin) but I'm moving to Galway next year for university, to study Celtic civilization and archaeology. I'm also not personally pagan, but I find it absolutely fascinating and love reading about pre-Christian religion. Anyways, I also hope to see you around while editing, and if you have any questions or need help, you can ask me or post a message at the Teahouse. Happy editing! :) sawyer * he/they * talk 05:21, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Removing Non-Diffusing Categories

Please don't remove people from non-diffusing categories, like you did here [1]. Roeds belonged in both the Category:17th-century Danish women farmers category and the Category:17th-century Danish farmers category per WP:EGRS. Mason (talk) 03:58, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

My bad; I got the message upon your last note on my talk page. I've got a better grasp on how things work now, and I think it's been a few weeks since I worked on categories. Again, I'm sorry you've had to clean up behind me. Thanks for your patience & see you around! sawyer * he/they * talk 20:33, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. DYK for Gates of Heaven Synagogue

On 12 February 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Gates of Heaven Synagogue, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the oldest surviving synagogue building in Wisconsin was almost razed in the 1970s? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Gates of Heaven Synagogue. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Gates of Heaven Synagogue), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Category - Church of Wales Church buildings in Gwent

Can I ask why you are putting buildings into a geographic category that no longer exists? Gwent has no geographic/governmental existence, it's a historic remnant. Would it not be better to put them in the Principal areas they are actually in, e.g. Monmouthshire, Newport? I can get the breaking-down of Wales, that make sense. KJP1 (talk) 07:54, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

I'm organizing them based on the preserved counties of Wales, of which Gwent is one; I was talking with a Welsh editor about the diffusion of Category:Church in Wales church buildings, and she thought that the preserved counties would be the simplest way to diffuse it since they're the largest subdivisions of the country, & other Wales-related categories use a disorganized combination of principal areas, historic counties, & preserved counties, and it can be difficult to make sense of which ones are which. I'm not Welsh, so I'm not intimately aware of the differences between Welsh subdivisions. I'm happy to switch to diffusing by principal area (or historic county, or something else) if you think that would be better! sawyer * he/they * talk 08:04, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
I see. I wouldn't personally think that the Preserved counties would be the best division. Basically, they're historic relics, that only have ceremonial functions, and not many of those. I would think that readers would want to know where the church buildings actually are, e.g. Newport, Monmouthshire etc. And that Principal areas of Wales would be best for that. It's the route others, including me, have gone done for things like; Grade I listed buildings in Monmouthshire, Registered historic parks and gardens in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough. My suggestion would be that you flag your plans - already far advanced! - on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Wales. It's a pretty active page, and you'll definitely get views. I'd be surprised if there was support for doing it by Preserved counties, but who knows. KJP1 (talk) 08:17, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
that's good to know; thanks for giving me a heads up. it's quite late where i am, so i think i'll just come back to this in the morning & make a WP wales post. re-reading all the relevant articles about the subdivisions of Wales, i think i agree with your assessment. categories can be tricky, so i appreciate your message. sawyer * he/they * talk 08:31, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
No problem. And I appreciate your taking on the task of splitting them . Certainly, Wales was too big. So the intention is right - it’s just a matter of agreeing on the best split. My “vote” will be for ‘by Principal Area’. KJP1 (talk) 08:45, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
Agree with KJP1, best use the principal areas, i.e. the modern counties. DankJae 20:45, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
thanks for the input. i've become a bit preoccupied today (see below), but i will start a discussion soon; hopefully it can create a consensus for future organization of Wales articles as well, as like i said earlier, it's quite disorganized as it is. sawyer * he/they * talk 20:52, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
@KJP1 @DankJae i sincerely apologize, but i'm far too scatterbrained and don't feel up to making a new discussion post today, due to both Vami's passing and some IRL stuff. either of you should feel free to deal with the categorization however you see fit (i won't object to reorganization, category deletion, one of you making a discussion post, or whatever), or just leave it and i'll get to it at some point. hope you guys understand. i've got some scratchpad notes here sawyer * he/they * talk 23:13, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
@Sawyer-mcdonell, done the ones that have at least two articles, kept the preserved ones as parent categories for now. DankJae 00:57, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
