The LGBT studies WikiProject Newsletter! Issue II - January 1, 2007

Happy New Year to all our members! Project News Several new templates have been created: {{Bisexuality topics sidebar}} and {{Transgender sidebar}} by Dev920 and AliceJMarkham respectively. SatyrTN also created a {{LGBT Welcome}} template to welcome new members. Thanks to them all. The LGBT Portal's various sections could do with updating on a weekly basis. Please pitch in if you can. Latter Days became a Featured Article on December 31. It was written and nominated by Dev920. Congratulations Dev! A new assessment system has been implemented - we have tagged and assessed over 1100 articles so far! Please tag any LGBT related articles you come across by adding {{LGBTProject | class=}} to the talkpage. Please see the Assessment Department for how to assess an article according to the grading system. A fledgling monthly LGBT Collaboration has been started, with Homosexuality as the December article and Gay stereotyping as our January article. Please contribute to this if you can, even if it's just correcting typos. A Translation department has been set up, to translate LGBT articles from foreign language Wikipedias that may have more information than our equivalent article. Please add your name if you are fluent in any language other than English. We have a brand new unique Project! Jumpaclass is a new semi-competition to improve our lower quality articles - see the subpage for more information. Please sign up and get it going! Peter Paddleford

Thanks for your interest.

"Capt." Philip Paddleford was born in Enfield. He married in Enfield Ruth Bullock in 1778. He had no children when he moved to Lyman (now Monroe) in 1779. At the time of the 1790 census, he had five children, one of which was Peter born 1785, presumably (what can I do here?) born in Lyman/Monroe. Peter was the fifth child, so I don't see Ruth going back to Enfield to bear him. Not easy traveling in those days.

The 1790 census agrees with my count except there is one more adult male that I can't match up. A helper? A relative living with them? I don't know. But the kids match. So, most likely he was born in Monroe/Lyman. I think he lived in Littleton. He's buried there. So he looked north (as did most of Monroe), not south. Better roads? Closer? I don't know.

So can I prove that he wasn't born in Enfield? No. But I don't think he was.

Portal

No-one seems terribly interested in the Portal, so I figured whoever signed up to do it could choose whatever they wanted within reason. The articles don't have to be featured, just fairly good quality. I'd choose a mix of FAs and GAs if I were you until you run out, and then just use your own judgement, really.

Btw, does anyone you know at the WikiProject actually write articles? Cos a lot of them seem to Wikignome and not a lot else. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 18:21, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

ISBNs

Well, Wikipedia has not been updated to use longer ISBNs. The whole point of using them is to be able to click through and use them to find the books. Also, you can not rely on Amazon for ISBNs - they will assign their own numbers to books w/o any ISBN. Those are not supposed to be used. A Ramachandran 15:36, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Ah, I see that you were using the ISBN from the Kessinger reprint of Cabellian Harmonics - that is not the edition documented. The edition documented is the Random House first edition. Please be careful when using ISBNs to use the ISBN for the correct edition. Match the publisher and date. If you want to document a reprint, it requires another citation, though I think the cite template may have a method for documenting two editions in the same cite.

For now, we should be using 10 digit ISBNs. Try clicking through the link of a 13 digit and then click through to Amazon - it doesn't work. A Ramachandran 15:45, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Hunh. Even though it's the new standard and Wikipedia processes the ISBN 13s correctly, it looks like very few other sites have updated their systems. Though the "Worldcat" link (the third one) did work correctly. Thanks for pointing it out - I shouldn't assume that websites will be up to date on their standards :)

I was so happy to randomly run across this group. I've been looking for something like it ever since I first started seriously contributing to Wikipedia. When was it "founded"? If you look here and scroll down you'll see I've already created some gay-themed articles. You may want to add the appropriate ones to the project, or I can after I learn more about how things are dome specific to this project. Thanks – it's nice of you to say so :) Jersyko and I wrote all but 3 of those little articles as well as List of defense of marriage amendments by type and most of Defense of marriage amendment. As far as WP:LGBT goes, thanks for the offer but I'm not sure I can join it at this time. I have a lot of different things on wikipedia going on right now and I'm afraid of over-committing myself. (I'm active on FR as well and about to start spending more or my wikitime there and a little less here). But WP:LGBT looks like a great project and I wish you the best of luck there, and I'd hardly rule out doing something there from time to time. All right, I admit I am a computer doofus! If you look at the articles, and then the archives, you'll see I (a) named the archives wrong, and (b) maybe made a new page when there were already archived articles in existence. I did ask Dev about this a couple weeks ago, but she said that I had to create them myself. I can't find any archives for selected articles, but there are archives going back months for the bios. It changed the way the LGBT community looked at itself, its relationships with each other as members of an oppressed class, and was instrumental in our emergence as a political movement. If you have the user preferences set to add pages to your watch list, then it will add them to the account you are signed into AWB with. Nope - don't need it. I've coded a bot in PHP that I'm using very occasionally - like I just used it to LGBTProject / stub the set of pages in Category:LGBT civil rights timeline. For some reason, it watchlisted them under this account, though. I'll have to check my code and see what I've done :) It's not the preferences, though, since I use the same account to tag tons of other pages, which have never shown up. <sigh> Then again, these are the silly problems I love to spend time figuring out :) – SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 01:05, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

The way I envisioned it is we have several broad categories "LGBT articles needing Expert Attention/Wikification/NPOV/Verification/Translation", with a "LGBT articles needing cleanup" for anything that doesn't fall under those scopes. You said you've been testing Expand, so I guess we ought to have an Expansion category as well. I can go through Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup and list the templates into the catgories for you if you would like? Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 20:56, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Right, it's not automatic. Or if there are some deletion sorting bots, they are only assigned to certain boards, so I haven't seen them. From time to time, I use Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Islam (which is surprisingly empty at the moment for the first time in months), and I never see bots using it. All the deletions are added by Truthspreader, Itaqallah, and Bsnowball, who are regular editors. So for Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sexuality and gender, SatyrTNbot can watch for those wikiproject templates, as well as for {{LGBTProject}}, on the talk pages of any article that's in AFD, and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sexuality and gender. Remember that wikiproject templates may have an arbitrary number of arguments, all of which the bot will need to ignore. — coelacan talk — 01:51, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Double yikes! I don't think that bot can have all the space between those comments. It needs to allow people to edit that space. There will be some articles and whatnot that are too new to have a wikiproject template tag, that will be added manually from time to time. Also adding the "Images and media" section is a good idea, but it needs to keep deletion review, as well as the categories, templates, and miscellany (which can be separate or in one section, not a big deal either way), and all the instruction comments for the different sections. Also, feel free to restrict the bot to just AFD's for the time being, if you want to keep it simple. Those are the ones that happen most often. Or go all the way, no problem either way. Thanks for your help Coelacan! My plan is to add some text to that page to explain what the bot is doing and how users can add new listings to that page. They can add to any of the sections just like they do now (and I need to add back in those comments about how to add articles, cats, etc). When the bot is run again (and I was thinking every week), anything they've added will be deleted - though I'm planning on making sure anything added to the list gets a project tag, so it will stay on the list.

Question, though, about the sections - what's the "deletion review" section you mentioned? All the others are still there and will still be there when the bot gets through.

As for testing, I did run it on a sandbox to test things out. And I figured it was pretty okay to move to the real space, since there currently aren't any articles, cats, whatever up for deletion.

The bot's probably going to have to run every day. Two or three times a day would even be good. When an AFD comes up, it's important to start replying quickly. And AFD's only last for five days tops, so once a week couldn't cut it. How about if the bot never deletes anything from that page, and we leave that for humans to take care of? Ideally, the bot would recognize the format of an entry in the list, and ignore those. Or, actually, this might be better (I'm giving you stream of consciousness now), maybe each section has just one comment line in it, like <!-- SatyrBot AFD tag, do not alter or remove --> and <!-- SatyrBot CFD tag, do not alter or remove --> and so on. The bot would look for the appropriate comment tag, (also, ducks) create one newline immediately following the tag, and add its output there in that single line. Then stop. Repeat if necessary. This way, it would always add new stuff at the top of each section, and it wouldn't have to worry about keeping things inside two barriers. Again, human removal when the discussions close. And btw, the layout of WP:DRV is pretty complicated. Don't worry about parsing that right now. The nature of DRV is such that humans are always aware of what's there, because nothing goes there until it recently completed an XFD, and people tend to follow it over there. — coelacan talk — 04:15, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

If someone removes the bot's comment tags, probably best to let humans replace them. Dev and I will definitely be paying close attention to that page, and we can put them back in whenever that's necessary. Definitely. My only concern with that process is that, my way, I (the bot) just put all the ones I find on the list. This way, I should check to see if the ones I find are on the list already, and that means parsing something a human put on the page. Which is not always correct. If the humans follow the instructions provided on that page, there should always be a link from the deletion sorting page directly to the article/category/whatever being deleted. I'm talking in html a_href tags now; in wiki markup we should expect one of three forms, {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pagename}} or colon-prefixed [[:Namespace:Pagename]] or if they made a very common mistake non-colon-prefixed [[Namespace:Pagename]] ... those should be all we expect. But I would consider just grabbing the html of the deletion sorting page, because it should always have a regular html link to the page under XFD, and you don't have to worry about the various permutations of human weirdness; MediaWiki will first filter that for you instead. If that uglies up the code too much, just rely on humans to clean up redundancies. It's better to get two links rather than zero. — coelacan talk — 07:05, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Help re:template

Hi Satyr, I think I'm in need of your technical expertise. I've become aware of a slight problem with the LGBT project tag for talk pages. Most talkpage tags (including project ones) have a parametre to turn it into a small version on the right side of the page. Which helps when talk pages have vast numbers of tags. This should be activated by using: {{LGBTProject|class=B|small=yes}} but our template doesn't have a smaller version. I haven't been able to figure out how to adapt the template myself. Any chance you known how to do this? Would be much appreciated... WJBscribe 14:02, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Maybe a more sensible question re:template. Might it be possible to have a "reason =" field in the template so we can explain why we're tagging an article if this might be disputed. e.g. a politician who is very opposed to gay rights. It would enable us to have in the tag "although this person is not themselves homosexual, the project takes interest in them because of the vast impact their policies have on the rights of LGBT people". George Bush is tagged by WP:BASEBALL, I would imagine, is because he used to own a baseball team before running for Governor of Texas. I think we should only tag people who are active anti-gay campaigners, rather than people who oppose gay rights as a sideline. It seems teh best way to go about it. I saw your comments on HoS's talk page. An admin deleted his Adam4Adam article after another admin restored it and did so despite a "hangon" and despite references that included the New York Times. HoS is really fed up with Wikipedia right now and has (in his words) marched off to "sulk like Achillies in his tent!" I don't blame him. It wouldn't hurt if you might lodge an opinion about the Adam4Adam article on its Deletion Review. I hope suggesting that isn't breaking Wiki-protocol! If it is, please don't fink on me. I, for 1, am going through LGBT articles category by category. Of course, in this case, Brokeback doesn't seem to be in any of the LGBT related categories, so I'd never get to it. <sigh> I've gone ahead and tagged it.

Btw, I classify the articles roughly, figuring editors of each article will change the rating if needed. I classify by looking at the length, the number of sections, whether there are cleanup tags, even whether or not there's discussion on the talk page. As for RAS, the article twice mentions gay content - RAS Boston held many of their rallies at gay bars in town, and under the "Legacy" section, the article states that RAS led to "an increased awareness of women's and queer perspectives in the punk rock community. Many trace the riot grrl movement in the 1990's to RAS roots. It challenged heterosexism, homophobia, sexism and elitism, while challenging stereotypes of women, and the way they are represented."
