Close some DRVs?
Hey Roy. I know you're focusing on other things these days, but there are a lot of DRVs that could use closing--too few regulars make hard closes hard. - It's actually exceptionally frustrating because a consensus does exist regarding WP:NSPORT bios (2017 RfC) and WP:NSPORT is written in a way that requires WP:GNG. This particular argument should be resolved. If you can defeat an AfD by yelling loudly enough that a SNG is met, I don't know why I spend the time searching for sources to save the article... Deleted article

- Corwin of Amber, Hi. My suggestion is submitting the draft for review and seeing what one of the AfC reviewers thinks. My part in the process was strictly procedural, so I'll leave the judgement call to others. Recent changes
- Twinkle is a gadget on English Wikipedia. It can help with maintenance and patrolling. It can now be used on other wikis. You can get Twinkle on your wiki using the twinkle-starter GitHub repository.
Problems
- The content translation tool did not work for many articles for a little while. This was because of a bug. [1]
- Some things will not work for about a minute on 5 May. This will happen around 06:00 UTC. This will affect the content translation tool and notifications among other things. This is because of an upgrade to avoid crashes. [2]
Changes later this week
- Reference Previews will become a default feature on a number of wikis on 5 May. This is later than planned because of some changes. You can use it without using Page Previews if you want to. The earlier plan was to have the preference to use both or none. [3][4]
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 May. It will be on all wikis from 6 May (calendar).
Future changes
The CSS classes .error,.warningand.successdo not work for mobile readers if they have not been specifically defined on your wiki. From June they will not work for desktop readers. This can affect gadgets and templates. The classes can be defined in MediaWiki:Common.css or template styles instead. [5]

Sockpuppet investigations/Jenos450
Hi, You recently archived this Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Jenos450/Archive. Mz7 had closed it earlier and after closing, I reported them of an account Gotails12 in the SPI. The account very likely belongs to this master as the account was created after hours after the master was blocked and restored the sock edits in Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Re-blocking sock IP
Hi Roy,
One of the sock IPs from Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Amfithea is active again (82.1.219.198 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)) and I'm...actually not sure how I'd go about getting them re-blocked. Do I need to re-open a case for an IP that was already judged to be the sockmaster, since the block has expired? Or is it sufficient to, you know, drop you a line since it's the same IP of the same banned user and the same behavior? –Roscelese (talk ⋅ contribs) 12:46, 7 May 2021 (UTC)

SPI Case
In reference to the previous SPI Investigations against User Adhithya Kiran Chekavar & Vishnu vaaish who were into the PR work of Thiyya promotion a new SPI Case was opened which is still awaiting checkuser for more than 30 days. More sock accounts are being created also desisting their stale accounts one after the other, Seems to make it harder for a checkuser to retrieve the data and will force them to close the case as lack of evidence. As I was being alleged intentionally on the recent SPI case your assistance is much appreciated whether to start a new case by myself. R.COutlander07@talk 07:47, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

- There is a new toolbar in the Reply tool. It works in the wikitext source mode. You can enable it in your preferences. [6] [7] [8]
- Wikimedia mailing lists are being moved to Mailman 3. This is a newer version. For the character encoding to work it will change from
UTF-8toutf8mb3. [9][10] - An earlier issue of Tech News said that the citoid API would handle dates with a month but no days in a new way. This has been reverted for now. There needs to be more discussion of how it affects different wikis first. [11]

I removed a template you had posted
Hello, Roysmith! Wanted to inform you that I removed the photo-requested template you had added to Talk:Black Lives Matter last month. I removed it because, as you'd anticipated, the fence has been painted over by now. Still if you think someone may have taken a picture and might still upload it upon reading the request, I can restore it again. This template didn't inform me about what kind of photo was requested, however. Initially I thought it was an ancient request for any photograph at all. - The Wikimedia movement has been using IRC on a network called Freenode. There have been changes around who is in control of the network. The Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts have decided to move to the new Libera Chat network instead. This is not a formal decision for the movement to move all channels but most Wikimedia IRC channels will probably leave Freenode. There is a migration guide and ongoing Wikimedia discussions about this.

Hello admin, Have a look at this section. I am suspected as the sock of Pheonixman. The reason nominator produced is my name. Yes, my name is Sharath Abhivadyah, there are around 1000+ Sharath Abhivadyahs in India. Actually, I don't know what's going around! I nominated some schools which fails WP:NSCHOOL user:Beccaynr claimed that is the same behaviour as the sock. You can check out all those, I stated this project as powerful karma and later renamed to AgentCody. I've nominated and voted around 97 articles. - The Wikimedia movement uses Phabricator for technical tasks. This is where we collect technical suggestions, bugs and what developers are working on. The company behind Phabricator will stop working on it. This will not change anything for the Wikimedia movement now. It could lead to changes in the future. [14][15][16]
- Searching on Wikipedia will find more results in some languages. This is mainly true for when those who search do not use the correct diacritics because they are not seen as necessary in that language. For example searching for

[17] - The CSRF token parameters in the action API were changed in 2014. The old parameters from before 2014 will stop working soon. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.
Arbitration
- After a Clarification request, the Arbitration Committee modified Remedy 5 of the Antisemitism in Poland case. This means sourcing expectations are a discretionary sanction instead of being present on all articles. It also details using the talk page or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard to discuss disputed sources.

Hi RoySmith, regarding this SPI, some of the accounts reported earlier are now old enough that they are autoconfirmed and being reactivated to bypass semi. (@Blablubbs:) Regarding the 08 May 2021 case close (Commenting here since it was marked closed), I disagree with not blocking the "burner" accounts. There's a long history of sleepers here, and some "burner" accounts have been reactivated literally within the past couple of days to avoid semi, so they are clearly being kept track of. - Chipmunkdavis, I understand your frustration here, but SPI is badly backed up and we just don't have the time to give every case the attention it deserves. We're doing the best we can.
- When we ask filers to give us more information or diffs, it's not that we're pushing back, it's that you know stuff that we don't and we're just trying to discover what it is. For example, when you wrote,

, that really doesn't advance the case because you haven't told us what those aspects are. . Look at that from the point of view of a clerk working the case. You haven't identified the specific edit that was being restored. You haven't even identified which sock made the edit. So, the clerk needs to go hunting to find it. You already have that information. You obviously have found some previous edit which was restored. So just put the link to the diff in the SPI report. That makes the clerk's job trivial. If the clerk has to go hunting to rediscover the information that you've already found but haven't shared, well, that's how SPI gets backed up so badly. -- RoySmith (talk) 12:45, 8 June 2021 (UTC)- Noted, I'll take another look through the various reports in a bit. - Given the extensive use of proxies and volume of new accounts, page protection will almost certainly be a better tool than blocking in this case, not to mention that WP:RFPP is always faster to respond than SPI. - Chipmunkdavis, I remember looking at those and not being clear on why it was harrassment. So, basically you need to walk the clerk through it. "I did this edit, then the sock reverted it here, and then I did..., and the sock did...". Keep in mind that by the time you file an SPI report, you're much more familiar with the case than the processing clerk is. The clerk knows the procedures, and is authorized to perform certain actions, but you're the one who knows the history. And given how badly backed up SPI is, when a clerk is faced with a difficult or complex case, they're likely to just move onto a simpler case. An IP you range blocked recently
Greetings RoySmith. An IP you range blocked recently, 183.90.36.0/23, is actually not a proxy. It's a dynamic range of one of the main telecommunications providers of Singapore. That would mean there's potentially up to ten of thousands of unique users on that IP range within any given time, and some might be enthusiastic users of Wikipedia unrelated as being a sockpuppet. As we can see, the last time this IP was blocked for only a month, there were three occasions (1, 2 and 3) where innocent individuals were caught by the block, and couldn't edit as a result. I also don't think ineedotstopforgetting would even use this IP range as they are probably smarter than that, especially considering that they are not a new investigation and that this would cause instant detection.
My point is that we shouldn't be quick to assume and associate every edit related to Singapore as being the doing of ineedtostopforgetting, as this could negatively affect many other potential users from Singapore or the region from editing its WikiProject. For starters, when the IP was re-blocked again just days after the end of its month-long block due to Chipmunkdavis' reporting its possibility of it being a sock for one of the IP's editing on Singapore Airlines, it shouldn't be far fetched that it was probably just the work of a local aviation enthusiast editing the airline from their country, and not a malicious sockpuppet of ineedtostopforgetting. There's probably many more examples but I'm pointing this recent one out as it was the cause of it getting blocked once more. Cheers.

Hello @RoySmith:!, This IP user 49.149.72.236 has been currently adding some pictures again and the same edits of the current blocked sockpuppet account, Philippine 1812, of Cathay Pacific and Cathay Pacific fleet. I don't know what to say but I kinda stress with that IP user or anyone that adds more airline pictures. I mean, it's really not important to add more, but WP:EW it is. - The query needs UNIONs (unless there's a better way) because the links need handling in different ways.
- A previous way I was formatting the query (with a leading :w:en:) meant articles were coming out with a leading ::, without that, and looking at it again, articles are OK with a single leading colon. For categories, category:page would attempt to categorise the page rather than link to the category. It needs a distinct way of presenting the pages as wikilinks. Down to two queries, one UNION, hooray!
- For Quarry 55882, (from my ever-more-distant memory of how Oracle used to handle queries)

- Logged-in users on the mobile web can choose to use the advanced mobile mode. They now see categories in a similar way as users on desktop do. This means that some gadgets that have just been for desktop users could work for users of the mobile site too. If your wiki has such gadgets you could decide to turn them on for the mobile site too. Some gadgets probably need to be fixed to look good on mobile. [20]
- Language links on Wikidata now works for multilingual Wikisource. [21]

- In the future we can't show the IP of unregistered editors to everyone. This is because privacy regulations and norms have changed. There is now a rough draft of how showing the IP to those who need to see it could work.
