Reculver FAC

Hello Ritchie333, could I trouble you for a revisit of the issue of sources at the Reculver FAC? Things have moved on a bit, and Ian Rose has asked for further input from you.[1] As things stand, hamiltonstone supports, Hchc2009 opposes, and I'm baffled! But there remain a couple of ways I can take things forward, and I'd very much appreciate it if you'd review developments since you last commented (per the first diff above, here it is again) and give your view, which I think I'd better take as final. I find it ironic I'm being consulted on my FA skills when I've never actually put an article through FA myself (I did give it a go with Keith Moon last year and there were some supports, but hey ho - it's still a GA, and that'll do). I had a quick look and there's nothing immediately obvious that stands out in being wrong - the obvious thing is to check your non-free files (which I assume the album art and music samples are) and make sure the fair use rationales are watertight. For example, the cover art in the infobox should not be any larger anywhere on WP. I'll see if I can have a more in-depth look next week. Ritchie333 ^{(talk) (cont)} 19:53, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

The principal problem - and this definitely isn't having a go at you or any other Wikipedians I've met - is that Rhonda and I like to do things together as a couple where possible. Gigs, radio shows, family days out etc. Unfortunately the general atmosphere of Wikimedia events ("Come to Wikimania! Pay money to sit in a room with a laptop!") and the Wikipedia community (or at least the more vocal flavour that turns up at ANI and noticeboards) is a complete and utter turn-off that scares her away. WP:BITE squared. She'd probably get on well with Natasha (they're both teachers) if she popped along to a meetup but otherwise it would be hit and miss. HiQ Easytyre and Autocentres

Hi Richie333,

Thanks for your note about HiQ Easy Tyre and Autocentres and there are a few points I want to raise with everyone.

Firstly, we are still building out the content as we learn so would appreciate a little bit of help and patience from everyone rather than just people saying delete pages.

Secondly, the HiQ brand is owned by Goodyear Dunlop but operates under a number of regional sub brands - HiQ is the national brand a Easy Tyre is the sub brand. So it is comparable with the likes of Kwik Fit.

Thirdly, it is slightly against the idea behind Wikipedia to only focus on the 'big brands' especially when we have a lot of local interest content that is being built into the pages with external references.

It is also worth noting that we are getting a lot of issues with people taking over the digital presence of Easy Tyre & Autocentres who do not actually own the brand - this is happening on a lot of social networks and obviously Wikipedia is something where people can get the right information on the brand, ownership and other important information.

Always happy to talk and love feedback on how to improve things.

@TerraceGent: Hi. I think it's important to make a couple of points. Firstly, despite what a lot of companies think, the presence or absence of a Wikipedia article really doesn't make too much of a difference to its success. For example, D&D Autos, a local repair company to me, have a strong turnover and financial success, yet they do not have a Wikipedia article. The best place to put correct factual information about yourself is on your own website - people will believe you are telling "your" side of the story.

Secondly, once you are considered important and significant enough to have a Wikipedia article, you are stuck with it. If, in the future, a BBC Midlands news report states that the business has failed, has been bought out by a competitor, or a company director has been arrested and charged for dangerous driving, that can be used as a reliable source and the negative information can go in the article for anyone to see at the end of a Google search. An article about your business is nothing to be proud of - so think twice and ask yourself if you really want one!

Thirdly, I don't think anyone deletes pages that are created in good faith by new editors for fun. It's a really difficult balance, and if it seems unfair, it is at least supposed to be consistently unfair across the board for everybody. Creating a new article is a popular way into editing Wikipedia regularly, and trying to find a way of staying within established policies, while trying not to scare new users away is one of the toughest challenges we face. Sadly most wiki articles are like the way it was. I was just browsing through some of the London tube stations, major ones like Piccadilly and Leicester Square and could not believe they weren't decent. I think most people who read Wikipedia don't know what a GA is, let alone why it's important. Most people don't care that you've got proper book sources with perfectly formatted ISBNs, even though if you pick up any history book worth reading, you'll find that's exactly what they do. And I've certainly seen arguments re sourcing where the response has been akin to "oh come on, it's an article about an album, not the bloody Israeli-Palestine conflict" and people are against proper sourcing and inline citations. Mind you, I've never really bought into the whole em/en dash issue or the intricacies of inbox formatting.

The trouble is, just getting an article to GA status can be a lot of work. Denmark Street was very quick to get close to it. I've been slogging through The White Album and it's taking forever to get even close - I look at all the completely uncited stuff about variations of Canadian cassette reissues and just want to bang my head against a desk and cry. And then there's Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs - one of my favourite albums ever, languishing with uncited or questionably cited quotations and tags. I feel an essay coming on.... Since you're here, here's a pop quiz for you. Let's say you're stewarding one of these album articles, and in the space of 24 hours, four separate IPs add edits in good faith but make the article worse. Adding genres, changing track times, changing British to American spelling, adding non-notable unrelated trivia such as a fan recording. All totally unsourced, of course. Let's say you catch and revert all four of them. Now, at that point, you've broken WP:3RR. The IPs are long gone, their addresses recycled, and the talk page just has your one post pointing to a laundry list of policies. You can't discuss, and you may well feel the next IP edit merits reverting. So an admin can legitimately block you. How do you extract yourself from that situation? Yes, I'm in Kent, but my sources are generally either online via Google Books or Newspapers (which seem to be getting better year on year), or by physically buying "dead-tree" versions - Ashford, Kent used a bunch of history books I picked up in a local bookshop cheaply. I have been meaning to pop along to Kent County Archives at some point and have a look - my dad has been done family and local history for decades and knows archive facilities inside out. Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens

I think to start off we need a good source or two. I can dig up travel guides and a basic introduction, but for a GA quality article, using those for major amounts of the facts just sounds, well, wrong. I did start doing sourcing for both and realised how little I know about either. If you want to concentrate on Kensington, I'll give Hyde Park a go, as Stones in the Park (the only article I started and got to GA) and related festivals mean I have a bit more of an idea about it. Yes, I'll start working through that. I'm always a little wary of putting up a GA that I don't have a reasonable working knowledge of, everything I've put up so far is something I feel I have a good handle on the subject. As I said, I'll want to arm myself with at least two well respected books. That will probably result in an explosion of content, after which we can use online / Google Books sources to finesse the details. For light relief, I may break off and quickly take You Never Give Me Your Money to GA status, which I can probably do in an evening (I've cobbled together an eight track composite of the song from stuff online and am using it as a test to teach myself Logic / Pro Tools mixing). According to the criteria for A7, the guidelines explicitly say "with the exception of educational institutions", which a school is. I think this is generally because a legitimate school can be redirected to somewhere else in the worst instance. You'll have to wait for the AfD to close, or PROD it. Dartford Crossing

Toll booths, yesterday

Hi,

You have reverted my corrections to the Dartford Crossing page for reasons I don't understand. You simply note "too much falsification of sources", whereas I was simply correcting relatively trivial errors. For example: "The crossing has always been tolled" - not correct; there has not been a toll at the crossing since 2003 "Charge for motorcycle w. Dart Tag - Free" - not correct, Motorcycles cannot use Dart Tag - the charge is not defined.

Could you explain what you disliked about my corrections?

I'll give a fuller explanation on Talk:Dartford Crossing later, but a brief summary:

• "A toll was payable since the first tunnel opened" - should read "A toll has been payable since the first tunnel opened"
• "The charge collection booths" vs "The toll booth" - to the man in the street, a road you have to pay to drive over is a toll, a "charge collection" is legalese (several problems here)
• "regularly carries 160,000 vehicles or more" - the source does not say it regularly carries that level, but merely that it may do
• "Construction work on the free-flow scheme started in early 2014." - the source just said "preparation"
• "a daily average of 136,000 vehicles." - the source gave an exact figure
• "Officers may stop and direct traffic on the crossing and its approach roads, and must be in uniform to exercise their powers." - removed for no reason, given it was sourced Ritchie333 ^{(talk) (cont)} 09:18, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the response, and happy to continue on Talk: Dartford Crossing Page, but just to confirm:

• A toll has been payable since the first tunnel opened" - no, a toll was payable from 1960 to 2003. In 2003 the toll was converted to a road user charge
• "The charge collection booths" vs "The toll booth" - to the man in the street, a road you have to pay to drive over is a toll, a "charge collection" is legalese - I just disagree with this. There is a clear distinction between a congestion charge and a toll. No man in the street refers to London Congestion Charge as a toll. With the introduction of Dart Charge and C logo at Dartford continued reference toll is, I suggest, incorrect and misleading
• "regularly carries 160,000 vehicles or more" - the source does not say it regularly carries that level, but merely that it may do- the crossing carries >160,000 vehicles roughly once per week - I will find you a source. Clearly it may carry up to 180,000 as this is the maximum measured flow
• "Construction work on the free-flow scheme started in early 2014." - the source just said "preparation" - 'preparation' (however defined) clearly started long before 2014, as there was a consultation on the changes in 2012. However, construction work started in early 2014, so I tried to convey what I assumed the original author meant
• "a daily average of 136,000 vehicles." - the source gave an exact figure - I ameded 136,015 (which is simply the total divided by 365) to a round figure; this seemed the more accessible number for the man in the street you quote above
• "Officers may stop and direct traffic on the crossing and its approach roads, and must be in uniform to exercise their powers." - removed for no reason, given it was sourced - this is a reference to Highways Agency Traffic Officers in general (see Highways Agency Traffic Officer page) there is nothing unique to Dartford Crossing in this statement (it is comparable to saying that users of the crossing should drive on the left)

confused and a little offended over my message

I added two things to the Keith Moon page. Being that was my first time ever adding to a page i coudnt understand why my stuff kept getting deleted so that's why i kept putting it back. Im a huge Keith fan and i know the two things I put were 100% accurate, and i didnt know how to add the source. If you yourself googled my two contributions you would see that they are facts and not speculations. Zak Starkey was infact Keiths Godson and brought him his first drum kit when he was a kid, and taught him to play. Keith was actually closer with Zak than he was his own daughter due to Kim leaving him, Mandy Moon didnt know her father very well. Fact number two was Keith did infact pay a thug 200 pounds to break Ian McLagans fingers (To ruin his career, since he played the keyboard) because he hated the fact Ian took Kim from him, he always loved Kim. Pete Townsend heard what Keith done and paid the thug another 200 pounds not to carry it out. Ironically the "Thug" that was hired was the driver for the Small Faces so Ian knew him very well and was very grateful to Pete for helping him because Ian said the guy was a nut. Now like i said it could be googled and you can see it was all facts, i being new, and lastnight being the first time using it, i innocently kept putting it back because i thought my two things were great contributions and thought i was doing it wrong. I dont know where or how to put the references. I seen your message that im being watched and could be blocked, why? Bcause i was a misinformed, and an unsure user who was just trying to add cool peices of Info? I dont even no if i wrote this out right. @GIGLmoon: - There are a number of different factors at play here, so I'll try and summarise them.

• Firstly, just because somebody reverted your edit, it doesn't mean you're in trouble. Everyone assumed good faith that you were trying to improve the encyclopaedia. As long as you discuss your changes (which you're now doing) and don't just blindly change the article back again, you'll be fine.
• All content on Wikipedia must be verifiable. That means if you are going to make edits that are contentious, you have to supply a reliable source that states clearly and unambiguously where you got the information from. By "reliable source", I mean something that has been professionally published and is widely understood to be accurate. In my view, the best source for Keith Moon is Tony Fletcher's book, "Dear Boy", (and I'd hope it was yours too) which is why you'll see lots of "{{sfn|Fletcher|1998|p=123}}" scattered throughout the article's source text. I can pull out the specific page if required, but I believe the book debunks the incident between Moon and Ian McLagan to be an urban myth and false. Therefore, it should not be added to the article.
• We require reliable sources because - well, just because it's on the internet, doesn't mean it's true! As you're probably aware, Moon was prone to making up stories and telling tall tales about his life in interviews, so although you might read something and believe it to be true, you cannot categorically prove that it is. Wikipedia requires the proof.
• Keith Moon is a good article. That means a number of experienced editors have assessed its quality and ensured that it meets good standards of prose and is factually accurate and verifiable. What this means in practice is that the expected standard for edits to be retained is higher - unless you are fixing obvious typos or grammar, or supply impeccable sources, you're likely to have edits reverted. When you think about editing an article, check for the green blob in the top right hand corner for "good". A brown star means it's a featured article, which is supposed to represent extremely high quality content of a professional standard, and what I just said applies even more (you can supply a reasonable source for an FA and still be reverted because the source is good but not the best one).

I'm sorry if this sounds like a lot to take in - it is. If you want any other assistance, I can recommend trying The Teahouse, which is staffed with volunteers able to help newcomers to Wikipedia. @Bco66209: I had a look at the article. A producer with that many credits under his belt should probably have an article. I did a search for "Graham Marsh producer", and there seems to be surprisingly little written about him from reliable sources. I found this article from the 2012 South by SouthWest festival, which certainly mentions his achievements, but again seems to devote little more than a paragraph. Strange.
