Arsenal Managers

Sally Davis' biography of Henry Morris [1] has thrown up an interesting item regarding George Morrell. Apparently he resigned on or before 19 April 1915. Arsenal played their last league game of that season on 24 April 1915 but there is no indication of who the manager was. John Peters was shown as having taken over the secretary duties. What do we do with regard to the managers' totals? Do we include this game in Morrell's total - I don't think it should be. Do we list this as an unknown caretaker manager? The obvious choice to take control of team affairs would have been the trainer, George Hardy, but there is nothing to state that he did.

Also, I don't think that Sam Hollis should be included. I'm not sure how his name got into the record books as being Arsenal manager. Take a look at this page from the 1914-15 handbook [2] or this from Bernard Joy's "Forward, Arsenal!" [3]. I can't find any reference to Hollis being "manager" of the team in any of the club's histories. I seem to remember his name appeared in a Rothman's Football Yearbook one year and no one seems to have challenged it. You are right about "Jock" "Punch" McEwan actually being James McEwen. His role at the start of the season was coach [4] - thinking about it he would be more qualified than the trainer, George Hardy, who would have been more like today's physio. McEwen had also managed Norwich City. I think that the last game should be removed from Morrell's record and should be credited to "Caretaker Manager" with a footnote indicating that it was highly likely that it was McEwen. I'm beginning to wish I hadn't started looking into this now. I've just read that George Elcoat was sacked on 25 February 1899. The position of manager was vacant for the rest of the season and I can't find any records of who the trainer was. And then we have other quirks like Jack Crayston & Don Howe actually being appointed caretaker manager for a period before being offered the position on a permanent basis. I've had a look through the official programmes for the 1956-57 season and come up with the following: 18 August 1956 (i.e. first game of the season) - confirmed Whittaker had been ill and not fully recovered over the summer months; Crayston had taken over coaching and training responsibilities; Whittaker was still shown as being Secretary-manager. 27 October 1956 (reserve game) - confirmed Whittaker's death the previous Wednesday (i.e. 24 October 1956). 3 November 1956 - tribute to Whittaker, the position of Secretary-manager had been removed from the list of club officials in the programme. 1 December 1956 - picture showing Bob Wall (newly appointed Secretary) shaking hands with Crayston "who now controls the team"; the positions of these two men still not shown in programme. 29 December 1956 (reserve game) - picture of Crayston with the caption "Newly appointed Arsenal Manager". 5 January 1957 - Crayston as Manager and Wall as Secretary shown in the programme for the first time; neither were acknowledged in their positions in the programmes on 22 December 1956 or 26 December 1956. From this I would say that Whittaker was still secretary-manager until his death, Crayston was in charge of the team but still officially assistant manager (a similar situation as at Liverpool when Phil Thompson took control of the team when Houllier was ill), Crayston was made caretaker manager upon Whittaker's death, Crayston was appointed full-time manager on 27 or 28 December 1956. Here's what I think - leave Whittaker's and Crayston's record as they are but put a footnote explaining that Crayston was in charge of the team at the start of 1956-57 until Whittaker's death and summarise these matches in the footnote as has been done with Liverpool [5]. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Goonerak (talk • contribs) 18:39, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Appears that either is correct, and that the word origin is actually Greek.

The Greek is stadion, the Latin stadium. To be ultra-pedantic the plural ought to be stadioi if we're following the Greek spelling, but that would be just as invalid as stadia in my view. Yes, that was ultra-pedantic. You are probably correct, your knowledge of language seems better than mine. One small point however; didn't the Romans borrow a lot of ideas from the Greeks. Without getting too caught up in an argument is it not possible that the Latin word stadium comes from the Greek word stadion. In the AFD you speedied Gavin Hoyte, because the circumstances have not changed, however the consensus was leaning towards keep because of his apparent FA Cup appearance for Arsenal which wasn't previously discussed. Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Arsenal seasons table

I know exactly what the problem is, and I can't figure out how to fix it. There's effectively two sets of parameters in play in the table regulating column and row spans, and changing one does not affect the other. The reason the individual tables are off is because they default to the size of the widest field, so >9 draws in a season changes that width for that decade table. The space needed for a refnote does as well.

However, making the columns wider isn't really addressing the problem because of the cell nesting in the League headers portion. Increasing the colspan doesn't affect the columns underneath, which still float based on the text inside the cell. I think the only way around the issue at this point is to remake the table from scratch. MSJapan (talk) 22:19, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Also, please note that I find your act of contacting other editors to revert more often than you can to violate the spirit of the rule. User page moved to article space

Hi, earlier today you restored User:Only1k slim which had been moved to article space. The user (who is a young kid it seems) has moved his user page again; I tried moving it back but couldn't, because "a page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid.". If you think my edit to the main Arsenal page's introductory section was badly written.....

...then I suggest you re-read all the Arsenal pages, and sort those out too - there are many similar grammatical errors (I would do it, but I haven't got time). You could have just corrected the grammar in my entry if you found it objectionable. Also, I read the rules about the length of the section, they are a little flexible (i.e. open to interpretation, as there is no word-count limit or anything similar), and if you care at all about the Arsenal Wikipedia entry and aren't biased against Arsenal, then look at other club's equivalent sections and consider the importance of the information I added - it isn't clearly mentioned anywhere else and seemed logically to belong where I added it. Finally, you also wiped out my removal of the controversial 1919 promotion sentence's clear Tottenham bias - there is no actual proof that Arsenal were promoted in 1919 due to any imporoper means, and heresay and allegations are not the domain of Wikipedia. And Tottenham weren't the only team involved in the controversy, so it is not factually correct to say 'at their expense'. North London Derby

Excuse me please mate you deleted the 5-4 and 4-4 draw in North London derbies. The title says Notable football matches not bloody title deciders and cup knockout games. The 5-4 and the 4-4 draw are notable for being thrilling and memorable games. Put them back please.

you have not bothered to answer me so I am putting back the 5-4 and 4-4 games. Notable matches should not just include cup semi-finals and title deciders as about 80% of the time Tottenham v Arsenal matches are not cup semi-finals and title deciders. They should include memorable matches in the League to make the article more interesting. you should know that wikipedia wants interesting articles and putting in memorable league encounters between the two sides will make it more interesting.

Yeah but isn't the history of Arsenal F.C. incredibly long and boring why not put moments where they only won trophies because the rest is too long. There is a lot more pages on wikipedia which are longer than the North London derby article so don't get stroppy and delete things which make things more intresting and you know for a fact that my version is more interesting. Who cares if its too long. you have got to keep other people happy.

Bit of a strange one this. I've had a look through my records and can't find any player named Black who played for Arsenal during 1898-99 (first team, reserves, friendlies or public practice matches). He's also shown as having been on Arsenal's books on allfootballers.com. Navbox question

Hope you don't mind my picking your brain for a moment. I noticed you added an "All articles" link to the Arsenal F.C. template, and I recently did the same to Template:Blackpool F.C. Thing is, the link only displays when the navbox is viewed on its own; when it's nested with other navboxes, the link is omitted. You have me confused with someone else; I have no concern with the figure you are referring to, so please stop threatening me. I just want there to be an IPA transcription of the name of the stadium since it is commonly mispronounced by non-native English speakers.
