Two years now! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:41, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks Gerda, this place can be very negative sometimes and I do appreciate all your efforts to make everyone feel welcome here.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 12:31, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
Thank you, and yes, I try. Making a round of thanks before work adds to a positive attitude. Did you see Jessye Norman in the news? We loose, be death and frustration, - every reason to focus on what to be thankful for. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:54, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I did. I'm afraid I know little about opera, but it was a very interesting read. Good luck with the GA!-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 16:24, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
No need to know anything about opera when it comes to a woman feeling not welcome on stages because of skin colour and weight, and overcoming that! I saw her in concert once, commanding silence during a long postlude from the piano, and the encore was "This little light of mine". Ched, thinking of you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:31, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

A long long time ago you expanded author David Benedictus

and now after many many additional edits the article 'flows' strangely. In particular you had added a paragraph beginning:

At the time of the book's publication ...

in what is now section Life for author David_Benedictus.

At that time of editing, the most recent newsy event was that the author had written Return to the Hundred Acre Wood. It would seem then that your sentence was referring to that book. But the article mentions other books and works between the lede and this now abrupt sentence.

It would be good of you to make clear to this dull reader which book is being referred to. Perhaps the third/fourth paragraphs currently under 'Life' ought to be moved to their own section and specifically about his 2009 book? Shenme (talk) 01:39, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

@Shenme: I'll take a look at it. I agree it reads oddly now. It was indeed the publicity over his Pooh sequel that prompted me to edit the article - and the that I had played chess with him a few years earlier when we were both members of Dulwich Chess Club!-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 13:41, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

Enho

Hey, do you know how to transfer files to the Commons? I cam across this photo of Endo which is on the Japanese Wikipedia but not on the Commons (as far as I can tell). I figured we'd be having an article on him before too long. We did have an image before but it was deleted.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 18:43, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

You mean EnHo maybe? Heh. I thought only I did that. It is strange. I didn't think it was possible to only have an image on one language wiki. Couldn't figure it out. You could copy it to wiki commons as it is public domain, but that's an iffy issue. the uploader's page says he understand high level English. You might try putting a message on his page. I assume the pic of Enho that was erased wasn't mine? FourTildes (talk) 09:20, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
No it wasn’t one of yours, it was this one. I have seen files on the English Wikipedia that are eligible to be transferred and there is a procedure for it, see Wikipedia:Moving files to Commons. But obviously my lack of Japanese makes it difficult for me figure out how to duplicate that on the ja wiki :) I’ll contact the uploader as you suggest. -- Pawnkingthree (talk) 13:06, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

New vs old

I would like to know where does it say it's wrong to give advice to so-called "veterans"? As long as they are disruptive, they should be warned by anyone. THE NEW ImmortalWizard(chat) 17:53, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

@ImmortalWizard: In theory yes, but in practice it should be left to admins or editors who are experienced in dispute resolution. It’s just my advice to you, which you are free to ignore, but I have seen over-enthuastic editors leap in at ANI before, and it rarely ends well for them. Your proposal was closed down within an hour - that should tell you that it was not well thought out. If you do too much of that kind of thing, you will get topic banned. I see you have already done good content work, so continue with that instead of hanging around the drama boards. You already have nearly twice as many edits to ANI as I have had in 12 years. It’s just not worth it. We are here to build an encyclopedia after all. Pawnkingthree (talk) 18:20, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi there, that IP address is mine for my mobile phone. And when I do such edits I mention that it is me and my edits are quite obvious. But sumo? The furthest away I’ve gotten from aviation on wikipeida is Audi’s. I don’t know if someone has my IP. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 10:54, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

@OrbitalEnd48401: It's possible if you edit logged out that your edits might be shared with others, depending on how stable the IP is. That's why you should always edit logged in if you don't want to get notices about vandalism by other users :) -- Pawnkingthree (talk) 14:40, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
Well no one and I mean no one has access to my mine otherwise their hand goes missing (joke). Well if my IP is being a pain in the future don’t block it to the point we’re i cannot use it. As in I can’t log in to my account from the IP if that makes sense. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 14:43, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
@OrbitalEnd48401: Well I'm not an admin so I don't have the power to block IPs anyway. The most I will do if I see a silly edit on an article on my watchlist (like this) is to go and leave a message on the IP's talk page, and of course you are free to delete or ignore it if it wasn't you.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:00, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Harumafuji Kōhei, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Banzai (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Draft:January 2018 Basho

Hey, I had an idea - tell me what you think. We put the traditional west/east listing in the banzuke section only and then put a traditional "most wins at the top, fewest wins on the bottom" standings table at the end of the article to help show the results. If there were a way to show promotion/relegation results as well similar to what is found on association football articles, that would be great as well, but I know it isn't as cut and dry in sumo often, so not sure if that would work. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 22:29, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

@Royal Autumn Crest: I'd be open to that idea. I used the table that Bmesd matt did for some of the year in sumo articles for consistency's sake, but we could play around with different formats. We could use colour coding to show promotion and relegation - that should be fairly straightforward.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 13:36, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
Are you guys working on a draft? I'd like to see it... I've been trying to figure out what a promotions/relegation list would look like if it's done well.Bmesd matt (talk) 13:48, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
@Bmesd matt: We have two on the go, actually. Mine is at Draft:January 2018 Basho and I believe Royal Autumn Crest has started one too.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 14:20, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
That's really nice. Are you envisioning moving all results to these basho pages, and removing the results from the year in sumo pages and just have links? That might clean things up quite a bit.Bmesd matt (talk) 14:32, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
That's a bit of a way down the line, but if we can get these basho articles fleshed out and moved to the mainspace then that would be a good idea, yes.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 14:53, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

Representing Japanese

Do you have thoughts on whether we should be using the common accent marks for rikishi? I have been using the plainest English characters (i.e. "Goeido"), but honestly I prefer the accented (i.e. "Gōeidō") because it helps me "hear" the correct pronunciation. I see that on Draft:January 2018 Basho we've got both styles. Bmesd matt (talk) 14:19, 28 May 2019 (UTC)

Bmesd matt The accents should definitely be used, per our style guide which follows MOS:JAPAN. I admit sometimes I am lazy and don't add them, but best practice to use them!-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 14:23, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
Pawnkingthree okay, updated the latest. Bmesd matt (talk) 15:17, 28 May 2019 (UTC)

Improving the article

Hi, I was advised by a more experienced wikipedian that it would be fine to list chessmetrics for an AFD or to reach out to you on your talk page. Would you like to improve the article and include non-primary sources and address the concern that this article does not meet general notability guidelines? As I've stated on the PROD template, there's zero in-depth reliable coverage. All sources are primary or give a passing mention only. Cheers, LaceyUF (talk) 23:14, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

@LaceyUF: You may well be correct that it doesn’t meet GNG, but the best venue for determining that is at AfD. A prod is only really for articles where deletion is completely uncontroversial, and I don’t think that applies here as Chessmetrics is mentioned in dozens of our chess biographies and it shouldn’t be deleted without discussion. I will certainly participate in the AfD if you decide to nominate it. Regards, -- Pawnkingthree (talk) 23:33, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Radadia

Hi, thanks for your contributions and comments. With regards to this comment of yours diff. Can you please elaborate your comment here on your talk page, why you are calling it a "really not much more than a stub"--DBigXray 16:01, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

HI DBigXray, sure. One of the criteria for posting a Recent Death is that it is a "non-stub". There isn't a standard definition of what a stub is, but I tend to go for the "DYK check" of 1500 characters "readable prose", and at 1596 characters it just barely clears that. There is very little detail on his life before the 1990s. In my opinion it's a bit of a stretch to call it start class, but like I said, what's there is sourced so that's why I'm not opposing it. You might get some more support from other editors if you were able to expand it a little more. Regards, -- Pawnkingthree (talk) 16:14, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Good to know that you also follow the 1.5KB stub rule. I only consider it what it really is, i.e. "a thumb rule" and not a policy. As far as this stub rule is concerned, the article clearly passes it and hence the criteria is met. End of this point. If it is larger than stub, It will be called Start class. Remember thankfully, there is no article class called as a "Barely Start Class". So even if you feel it is a stretch to call it start class, it still is, a start class. This was all nitpicking so far. Now here is the main thing and the real reason I started this thread, it is WP:NOTBURO and I am sure you are aware of it as well. We here are to build up an encyclopedia, that is the main goal. At ITN/C we highlight our articles that are in the news and the readers can find the information useful. The reason why stubs are not promoted is because they contain a line or two which may not really be of much use to the reader. Now Radadia's bio although a start class contains a lot of useful info that a reader may find useful to know and hence the article as it stands right now deserves to go to the main page. Now I am aware this article will not pass a GA review but it is not intended to pass a GA review at this point of time. So all this bickering that There is very little detail on his life before the 1990s is useless as far as the ITN is concerned, frankly IDGAF what he did before 1990 and if some one cared about it, he will add up that info, if he finds it somewhere, we arent going to wait for that person to add it up into that article before moving it to main page. The intention here is to make the article main page worthy and a webpage worthy enough to be clicked and read. Which this article met. All this is my own opinion, in response to your comment on the ITN. You are free to agree or disagree, but I do sincerely hope you got my point. cheers and regards. --DBigXray 19:14, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Highlighting articles that are in the news is certainly important, but so is quality, and very short articles often encounter opposition at ITN. It doesn't have to be GA standard, but I don't think it's nitpicking or bureaucracy to ask for a little more detail. Ultimately though I supported your nom (and I'm still the only one to do so.)-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 20:13, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
1. This is not a very short article. 2. If you want something in the article please be WP:BOLD and do it yourself. 3.there is a criteria at ITN that should be met, it exists basically to save the contributors from the whims and fantasies of folks who want more improvement, when they fail to realize that there is ALWAYS some room for improvement. We need to draw a line and your comments at itnc should also be based on that line. --DBigXray 20:48, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

I’ve always found fascinating the fact that Dai-yok Futabayama revealing he had actually been blind in one eye during his unquestionably dominant sumo career. His career ended 75 years ago next year, “Dyk that 75 years ago FY revealed Yada Yada” FourTildes (talk) 22:18, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to [email protected], so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at [email protected].

Thank you!
