February 2020[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual and which complies with our username policy or request a change of username.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page.

You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you would prefer to change your username, you may appeal this username block by adding the text

{{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}

at the bottom of your talk page. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names.

 Thank you. – Juliancolton | Talk 06:13, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

OurBlackYear is NOT the name of an organization or group. I am Maggie Anderson. This Wikipedia page is about me. You categorized me as an "activist" because I took a stand to live off Black businesses for one year. This stand is known as OUR BLACK YEAR. Our Black Year and Maggie Anderson, the activist, are one and the same. My name is so common. So that's why I go by OUR BLACK YEAR. My TED Talk is called OUR BLACK YEAR. But it is not a group or organization. It's just me. My social media handle is OUR BLACK YEAR.

Decline reason:

Generally, usernames cannot promote a cause either. Even if we accept that your username identifies you alone- you would need to prove your identity to Wikipedia(I will provide instructions on how to do this below) and indicate that you have reviewed the autobiography policy. Your edits so far were promotional in nature as well(though this is only a username block). I am declining your request. 331dot (talk) 14:29, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because the username, OurBlackYear, matches the name of a well-known, living person.

If you are the person represented by this username, please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. You may choose to edit under a new username (see information below), but keep in mind that you are welcome to continue to edit under this username. If you choose to do so, we ask the following:

  1. Please be willing and able to prove your identity to Wikipedia.
  2. Please send an email to info-en@wikimedia.org. Be aware that the volunteer response team that handles email is indeed operated entirely by volunteers, and the reply may not be immediate.

If you are not the person represented by this username, you are welcome to choose a new username (see below).

A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.

You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:

  1. Adding {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
If you think that you were blocked in error, you may appeal this block by adding {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this notice, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. 331dot (talk) 14:30, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hello again. I am Maggie Anderson and I am willing to prove it. The only reason I made those edits to my page not to promote myself. I made them because the info included was erroneous. There was a link to my a LinkedIn page and a website. Both were outdated or did not exist. There were links to outdated press. ALL I DID WAS CORRECT what was already there. There was a website that is not mine. Used to be mine, but no longer is. And the LinkedIn page did not exist. Again, I was just trying to correct info ABOUT ME! I had never done this before so I needed to create an account to do all of this. You would not let me use Maggie Anderson as my username, so I went to the next best thing, which is OUR BLACK YEAR. I wanted it to be clear that those edits were being made by the actual Maggie Anderson. Please tell me what I need to do next. I do not care if you block me as a user. All I wanted to do was correct my page. If I can do tha another way, then fine. Thank you!

Decline reason:

We've shown you how to prove it. Please follow the instructions. And note, WP:COI applies. We aren't interested in having you write about yourself, though if unblocked, you will be free to write about subject areas for which you have no conflict of interest. Request reason:

Hello Yamla. You did not tell me how to prove my identity. All you did was give me an email address. I appreciate your help but I would hardly call that detailed instructions. I sent an email. Now, please tell me what else I can do. Or whether there is something specific I am supposed to include in the email. I did not include any attachments because I had no instructions.

Accept reason:

Identity has been confirmed to OTRS. Please note that promotional editing, or editing with a conflict of interest, may still result in sanctions in the future. – Juliancolton | Talk 16:38, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the instructions above, starting with "If you are the person represented by this username". If you have followed those instructions, you have to wait. There's nothing we can do until the volunteers at [email protected] respond. --Yamla (talk) 15:15, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Juliancolton: - are you ok with lifting the block? PhilKnight (talk) 16:21, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

PhilKnight, yes, I have no objections. Thanks for the notification. – Juliancolton | Talk 16:25, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
