2016 POTUS

I have a question. If the gallerymode: packed-hover violates any of wikipedia's rules, then why would the option be provided? It works on mobile because the last name only whites out a small sliver of the image, and on desktop, natural tendency to mouse on images give you the name. I'm just wondering how an option which Wikipedia provides (and includes Help:Gallery tag) could be in violation of rules. Spartan7W § 14:32, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

1. Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
2. Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
3. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
4. Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
5. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
6. Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
7. Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
8. Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Do you really have to identify Nolan Ryan as "right" in the photo caption of the picture with Andy Pettitte?

Assume that a Wikipedia user who knows nothing about American baseball inadvertently goes to the article on Nolan Ryan. Ryan's photo immediately appears in the info box. There are three additional photos of Nolan Ryan in the article BEFORE the user sees the photo of Ryan with Andy Pettitte. By this time, the user knows what Nolan Ryan looks like. It's silly and unnecessary to have "right" after Ryan's name in the photo caption.

Team names in links

On the one hand, it's good you reverted my edit at David Denson since I forgot to remove the, so it had bad grammar like "He committed to play play college baseball for the Hawaii." However, I don't think WP:EGG applies, as WP:SPECIFICLINK would dictate that readers would expect a link to the Hawaii team, not its location. I had been as guilty as any editor before of leaving Wikipedia titles verbatim in the links, but I think it's OK to pipe in cases like this when the team name is not referenced anywhere else in the prose, making it trivial at best. It'd be a different story with something link New York Yankees in Derek Jeter's article, which makes use go Yankees.—Bagumba (talk) 23:27, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

I noticed the grammar issue only after I reverted it. I don't see how WP:SPECIFICLINK applies; even if piped, it will still go to the team article. I should've linked to WP:EASTEREGG. When I see the word "Hawaii" or "Wisconsin" as the sole text of a wikilink, I personally expect it to be a link to those particular states. That's how my brain seems to work. I think the team name is worth including without piping, and piping can cause problems. One example of this is Kevin Newman (baseball), who was promoted in July or August from the West Virginia Black Bears to the West Virginia Power. So nice of Pittsburgh to name two Class A affiliates "West Virginia". – Muboshgu (talk) 23:37, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

SPECFICLINK: "Always link to the article on the most specific topic appropriate to the context from which you link: it will generally contain more focused information, as well as links to more general topics." The relevant example listed would be "[[Requiem (Mozart)|Requiem]]" vs "[[Requiem]]". In the case of players, they play for the team at the location, not the location itself. Ideally, the team article will have links in its prose that lead to the city article, for those who really need more info on where it is. I don't think EASTEREGG applies, as I don't believe any information is being hidden here by the pipe. Most sources I read outside of WP usually just list the city name, not location + team name, upon first mention. This is even more likely for minor league teams that nobody but a diehard MiLB fan would know (or be interested in).—Bagumba (talk) 00:15, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

More clarification: It's not that SPECIFICLINK wasn't already being followed, it was more of an explanation on why EGG doesnt apply, because one should expect/want the team to be linked, not the location. The idea that Harry Reid has mob ties is an unsubstantiated conspiracy theory, which does not belong on Wikipedia. In fact, the idea that Reid is in cahoots with the mob goes directly against all evidence, like the time he turned down a $12,000 bribe and they allegedly tried to kill him with a car bomb. Denigrating somebody the way you have (sarcastically calling me "master") isn't the best way to go about this. Wikipedia runs on consensus and you have to be civil with people who disagree with you. To get consensus, I suggest posting what you want to be done on Talk:Harry Reid to get feedback from the entire community. To the specifics, I have some issue with those sources. The Review Journal piece is an op-ed, and not the best sort of source to use per WP:RS. It certainly doesn't prove that he's ever taken taken a bribe. Averages

FWIW, I was trying to move away from ppg and rpg in Malone's article, and just use "points" and "rebounds". When talking about averages, it just seems redundant to keep mentioning "per game". Yeah that's true, but some people will simply look at "total match candidates" and the bolded text to see how bad the problem is perceived to be. I've never seen a NOMINEE with that political box on the right, or whatever you want to call it. At first glance, it looks like she was an elected representative. Infoboxes are helpful for summarizing key points for a subject. Plenty of nominees have them. See Robert Sarvis, Randy Altschuler, Danny Tarkanian, E. W. Jackson for just a few examples. DOMA entry

To camouflage the sort of thuggery I have run up against by suggesting I am "pushing a point of view" is indicative that you yourself(-ves) are doing that very thing, by peremptorily excising my commentary without consultation or discussion. I only received automated notice after the deed was done.

This is an issue that has not been litigated; ergo, it is not possible to cite an external source. But one is not necessary in this case. Former Congressman Barr misunderstood the use of the noun "effect" in Article IV. We don't need a court decision to explain that any more clearly. I would submit that being thusly thin-skinned is at the root of the problem. The statement was indeed risible, as it suggests you completely neglected to factor in the relevant Supreme Court case. While the Court did not expressly address Barr's use (or misuse) of the word "effect," the decision answers the question for us with its directive, which cites the "Full Faith and Credit" clause as its basis. Noted constitutional scholars will surely have them out there which can verify what you're saying, and in which case it can stay up. Oh, good grief.... I just stated it did not come directly from Obergefell minutes ago in a prior paragraph, but it was dealt with indirectly. Barr was not a party to the suit, and there would have been no need for the Court to have ruled on his contention directly. Furthermore, Barr's idea was so off-base and bespoke such an amateurish misunderstanding of Article IV that it might even have been viewed as an affront to the Court for any of the parties to the suit to have brought it up. If you want to find the source of "pushing a point of view" in this issue, I would suggest you look to those who cling, more than a decade later, to this fanciful meme hatched by Barr. It was and is an attempt to cast aspersions on the Supreme Court's reasoning and authority. ** VEChicago (talk) 21:04, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
