Stirling

I started replying here, but Melburnian has joined the fray, so I'll keep it all together over there. Hesperian 04:55, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

  • Hi - thanks for alerting me to the discussion point. I have been replying at Hesperian's talk page but I have copied the discussion to Portal talk:Australia/Anniversaries/March/March 4. As the document I was referencing is included in the National Archives' collection of 110 founding documents of Australia, I think it deserves a mention in our event calendar. I have updated the articles on Stirling and Governor of WA too (with the ref to the founding document) Regards --Matilda talk 23:44, 4 March 2008 (UTC) now in search of some other obscure factoid to bemuse the world with :-)

Monday morning

There is some really dumb behaviour on wikipedia this morning - gosh

  • re - template on the 1967 tas fire - the newbie who merged the 1967 and hobart fire arts didnt bother to cleanup or edit the two arts - I'd be very critical of where such a merge went without the slightest of checking - they were two separate articles for good reason - i havent got around to sorting what is what - cheers SatuSuro 00:30, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok - fair enough - I better dig very deep for my photo of hobart from mount wellington in late december 1966 (!) to sort that out :( SatuSuro 02:52, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Btw - template is a good idea- brings stuff together - i like it SatuSuro 02:53, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Yes and no. I'm not sure what it adds that a category doesn't, but they do look prettier I admit. —Moondyne click! 02:57, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

I just had a bot notify me on my talk page that this has been nominated for deletion. I can only assume that me being notified is some error because I didn't make the article, just the most recent edit. As you created the article and haven't been informed I thought I'd give you a heads up. Crickettragic (talk) 11:15, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Stats

Gee, I wonder what happened on the 7th February? [1]? —Moondyne click! 06:36, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

There's no equivalent peak in the Houtman Abrolhos stats, so I suggest that it was probably me.
Last month I fooled around with IMCRA provinces and meso-scale bioregions. One of the meso-scale bioregions is named "Abrolhos Islands". This created a deeply distressing dilemma. Should there be an article on the meso-scale bioregion called "Abrolhos Islands"? Or should the article be at "Abrolhos Islands (IMCRA region)", and if so, should "Abrolhos Islands" continue to redirect to Houtman Abrolhos, or should it become a disambiguation page? Or, should I let the "Houtman Abrolhos" article stand for the IMCRA region too? In the end I chose the last option. Houtman Abrolhos contains a brief mention of the fact that it has its own meso-scale bioregion in IMCRA, and that suffices.
I postulate that the dilemma hit me on 7 February, and that I lubricated my mental processes by repeatedly clicking back and forth through the relevant page titles. The problem with this theory is that I didn't create IMCRA until the 19th, and I didn't create Southwest Shelf Transition until the 26th.

Crikey, there's a bit going on here. Account Historyluvver created Courtenay Gass. Historyluvver has been in contact with account Gasscg94wa - Gass, Courtenay G.? - creator of Brandon Zubek, which was subsequently vandalised by account I'm On Speed. I'm On Speed vandalised Moondyne and SatuSuro's user pages, right after those two had warned and blocked Historyluvver on vandalism. Both accounts have edited articles pinocytosis and yagan. Meanwhile, I'm On Speed got caught up in an autoblock on Goodbo, another vandalism account. Both of these last two have edited Julia Gillard.
I'd say it is pretty much beyond dispute now that Courtenay Gass and Brandon Zubek are hoaxes. I see Luna Santin has just deleted them on those grounds. Hesperian 05:30, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Now why would you accuse Circeus of something like that?! But seriously, I can't think of anyone recently departed who fits the bill. Hesperian 05:38, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Moondyne. Do you need help with the cats page before we send it off to SatyrBot? Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 07:17, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

I mean, the article talk tagging is separate from teh cats, and all the categories seem to have been weeded for false positive cats and duplicates. So we can get the bot running on the article talk pages I think. Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 07:20, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, the logo is in fact the station sign which one sees from the train as one enters. It's not really a logo as such, and apart from the fact it uses the same colour and font, it's unlikely to be a major issue now the fair use tags are on it. Orderinchaos 14:59, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

How is it that you edited Yagan on 5 March, and the following day Gasscg94wa vandalised it and a few days later Historyluvver also. I'd like to hear your explanation of this strange editing pattern. Did they look over your shoulder to see what you were editing? If you are who I assume you are (based on previous correspondence. I have no intention of outing you), can you confirm that Courtenay is a real person? —Moondyne click! 14:05, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

An article about the crime would probably be an interesting piece, and may even be notable, but I couldn't imagine how you'd do it without detailing a fair bit of biographical information of the main protagonist, and no doubt the anons would be swarming to insert as much detail as they could. Anyway, this would probably be in violation of Wikipedia:Content forking and the article would become a coatrack. And as I said in the comment at the discussion, she is likely to go into a witness protection program at some time soon and I don't see an article as being a good thing for her. So what?, some may ask. But my view is that we should do no harm and the world won't stop turning if we don't have an article on every news event. Sorry, but I can't see a good outcome from this. Cheers. —Moondyne click! 12:25, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Golden Age of Cricket

Hello, Moondyne, thank you for your message.

As it happens I'm a long-standing member of the ACS and I was taken aback to see your comment on the talk page of the Golden Age article. I can assure you that the ACS as a body is not involved in anything untoward, although I can't speak for individual members. I have taken on board your point about WP:AGF as you are quite right. I don't know if it breached any copyright and I shouldn't have raised that concern. But I think your "conspiracy theory" also breaches WP:AGF and so I have removed all statements that I think are in contravention.

Thank you for inviting me to join WP:CRIC. I think I will do that but please understand that I am essentially a reader of Wikipedia and I rarely contribute. All the best. --JamesJJames (talk) 18:24, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

I can understand your reasoning but I could easily say that my question about copyright was pondering too, as I did not know and could only express my feeling about the matter. My real concern here is that your comment about the ACS implies something untoward and I believe it should be retracted unless you can show that the ACS has been out of order in some way.
It is probably because of being in the ACS that I expect high standards of accuracy and quality when I read cricket articles on Wikipedia. I take your point about articles being improved by all users but this one had been allowed to grow very large without any attempt being made to improve its quality and I think that would have continued. I work in the publishing industry and I can tell when "a writer can write": this fellow was simply storing assorted facts and has no regard for structure or correctness whatsoever.
Could I please ask you again to remove the comment about the ACS? Thank you. --JamesJJames (talk) 07:38, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

DYKs

Your affection for DYKs is beginning to make sense to me. I wrote an article on Calymperastrum, an interesting and unique, albeit utterly obscure, subject. It is sad to think that it will sink like a stone, and probably no-one will ever read it. I was tempted to DYK it, but couldn't think of anything not too technical. What do you think? Is it DYK material? Any suggestions? Hesperian 04:18, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

what about ... that Calymperastrum latifolium is the sole species of moss endemic to Southwest Botanic Province of Western Australia. Gnangarra 04:40, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
It's not. There are four endemic species, but Calymperastrum is the only endemic genus, by virtue of it being monotypic. I suppose I could promote your suggestion to genus rank: that Calymperastrum is the sole genus of moss endemic to the Southwest Botanic Province of Western Australia. Hesperian 04:53, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
or that the monotypic Calymperastrum is the sole genus of moss endemic to the Southwest Botanic Province of Western Australia. Gnangarra 04:57, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure if you guys are talking the piss out me and/or each other. Half the fun in DYK's making the tagline. —Moondyne click! 09:12, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Dennis Yagmich

I have nominated Dennis Yagmich, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dennis Yagmich (2nd nomination). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Sorry about the TWINKLE boilerplate. I did mean to come back and tidy it up but got distracted while trying to cleanup the mess that had been made. It has been an interesting day! -- Mattinbgn\talk 12:48, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
No problems mate, understood. —Moondyne click! 15:15, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Threat

I know it's late, but this threat is quite aggressive on your part. The problem with your argument is largely due to the fact that there was not one word of discussion on any of the articles that were split before the split took place. I was quite clear about this in my edit summaries, and your threat is thus most unwarranted. The splits should not have taken place without need, discussion, and consensus at the individual pages. Please do not now split Banana, Peach, etc. similarly without discussion. Badagnani (talk) 06:14, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Please check again: no consensus was sought nor obtained at the discussion pages of any of those articles. That would certainly need to be done before such a radical change as these splits. Badagnani (talk) 06:25, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

ACS

The ACS clearly sets the standard in the world of cricket stats and history but I think some of the books have been weak eg: Famous Cricketers (a few clunkers here though a 100 were published) Some of the Journal Articles were low on James quality(out of 100's). A recent series of short autobiographies seems interesting though I believe the Alun Watkins book was described as anodyne. Incidentally I believe a tension has grown up between Cricketarchive and the ACS.(Last AGM) Oh and I am not a member but know several very well.)Fieldgoalunit (talk) 18:01, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

DYK

Updated DYK query On April 17, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Palace Hotel, Perth, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Well done again Moondyne, keep on going, 100 isn't far away. Craig passed FA btw. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 02:49, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
