Brazil population

I agree the population projections are too low. However, there is a generalized, serious misconception about Brazil that you reproduce. The country is not a fast growing nation in any sense. Brazil has taken its time to develop economically. It's population had a boom in the 40's and 50's, similarly to what happened in the US. But since then, the fertility rate has been in very sharp decline. A sign of this is the fact that Brazil still only has a population of 180 million. The images from the underdeveloped slums in Brazil throw the country into a sea of misconceptions. But it is not your average underdeveloped country. There are two Brazils: the one of the rich and the one of the poor. It is true, yes, that lately the middle class has been growing. But the infrastructure has been there for centuries. It is only being expanded. Particularly, the country has reliable census data on which the projections are based. The same cannot be said about India, China, etc... India is not able to pursue such a thorough study. China manipulates its numbers, since it is a dictatorship. Brazil is a democracy and, besides the censuses every ten years, it counts its population yearly. They literally knock from door to door every year. I should also note that Brazilians take family planning very seriously and are very critical of population growth. If you are interested in changing your view on the country, I suggest reading some books on Brazil. It is a lot more complex and interesting than you would assume. And yes, racial mixing is a matter of pride for Brazilians. Don't infer anything from this. As a matter of fact, the fastest growing countries are in Asia and Africa, where the populations are pretty homogeneous (very few immigrants). The US is the only country that has a variety of races that is among the top 8 countries in population by 2050. I don't know what you mean. My intention was what I just suggested in the edit summary: I restored the previous world population totals per year, as they remained hidden and were not actually shown; it were your two recent edits that attracted my attention towards that involuntary mistake. Besides, I include the world “flag” as a mere complementary drawing.

By the way, if you had been careful enough to see the article's full history, you might have seen that I am its original creator and main contributor by far (with more than 40 edits and up to some 99% if its contents). In fact, it's my only "big" contribution to the English Wikipedia, since I basically belong to the Spanish language one, sometimes translating certain articles dealing with politics, the past Cold War and commercial aircraft.

I only wrote “by hand” the article's preliminary notes, since its three big tables and the 3 small summary ones have been automatically created by the interaction of various relatively complex OpenOffice.org Calc macros, spreading across some 1,100 lines of source code. Not only has that allowed me to avoid potential or possible typing mistakes, but it also lets me carry out casual massive updates at once, in only some minutes. Precisely, my previous edit (before your two ones) included one of those updates (If you compare it side by side with the previous edit, you'll see how much The US Census Bureau's IDB happens to change some of its estimates from time to time).

However, I do have some concern if what you are saying is that you have made the coding so complex that only you can edit it. Meantime, I wonder if you could remove the three instances of the pretend "world flag" from the article, as a consensus has formed that it is not encyclopedic. I didn't say that I'm the only one that can edit the code, but that I'm the guy who can massively update it.

Never mind, if that's the consensus regarding the so-called "world flag", you can just do away with it. But I think that it would be simpler and better to just replace the three occurrences of '''{{flag|World}}''' with '''World''', rather than adding the {{noflag}} placeholder. In any case, all I'll have to do is to change the BASIC code just a little bit for any future massive pasting, as soon as the US Census Bureau releases new world population data through its International Data Base (IDB) service. As I told you before, the main problem that caught my attention was the one related to the missing yearly world totals, not the flag issue.

May I suggest ...

You have some talent with turning sources into Wiki-tables. My I point you in the direction of a Article that (I suspect) you may be able to find information for and/or generate references for? The current problem with it is that it is a HUGEly long list and is proving tediously slow for Editors to try and fix. Then it occured to me that, if you are able to locate UN population figures, possibly you could also locate UN "Languages spoken in XXX country" type of information. I myself have never been good at locating UN information. The Article is List of countries by spoken languages. Please, have a look and see if your skill at UN stuff can assist. First of all, thank you very much for your kind comments :-)

Now, regarding your question or suggestion, I have never been particularly good at finding UN data. In fact, I macro-generated the List of countries by past and future population (United Nations) and the similar ones from a Excel spreadsheet that I found in an updated 2010-2011 UN link that user Polaron had added some months ago to the List of countries by population article.

On the other hand, I don't think that the UN Population Division is a good source for language distribution data, because it mainly focuses in countries and territories as a whole and not at an internal or a subnational level (which is necessarily involved when talking about minority tongues).

In that case, SIL's (www.sil.org) Ethnologue (www.ethnologue.com) seems to be a better source (being a respected and authoritative one, even cited by the annual Britannica Book of the Year), but unfortunately it is a USD 100 book.

If I could find any related spreadsheet (XLS, SDC, SXC, ODS) or CSV (TSV) file then I would be glad to help by writing some lines of LibreOffice Basic source code to turn it into a wiki table (In fact, that's what I have done in some other articles such as the IMF-based List of countries by past and future GDP (nominal) and three similar ones).

Australian population at List of countries by population

Please stop changing the formulae that calculate the population of Australia at List of countries by population. As the notes in the article indicate, the formulae allow direct trasnposition of data from the official population clock without any need to make calculations that your formulae require. Hi Max. In respect to the list of countries by future GDP estimates, the figures of Hausmann and Hidalgo are in PPP US List of countries by economic complexity, they are not nominal. However I understand they look very different to the International Dollars figures. I suggest that the name of the page should be changed, as it is unfair that the "List of Countries by future GDP (per capita) estimate" makes only reference to the IMF estimates, while there other estimates that deserve attention. In fact the estimates of Hausmann and Hidalgo have their own list (List of countries by future GDP (based on ECI) estimates. I think we should raise this point in the talk section of the page. Hi MaxBech1975, I am not in a mood of creating a Wikipedia account right now, so you will only see my IP-Adress, sorry. But anyways:
You seem to be the one who autogenerated the tables for "List of countries by past and future GDP (PPP)" via "Real (fully macro-generated) update...". The numbers in the WEO Database, April 2012 Edition, where you got the data from, are in billions (e.g. US-GDP for 2005 as 12,622.950 (with a point)), but the numbers in the tables of the Wikipedia article are in millions (US-GDP for 2005 as 12,622,950 (with a comma)). I corrected the article by stating in the first paragraph that "Values are given in millions USDs.", not in billions as it originally said. If you want to have the numbers in billions, maybe you can adjust your macro which at the moment seems to convert e.g. 12,622.950 to 12,622,950 when importing the data from WEO. Whatever you prefer.

Yes, both tables of the List of sovereign states and dependent territories by population density article have been fully automatized from August 7, 2012. I did that by programming some 675 lines of specific BASIC code in LibreOffice Calc, which are based on three external tabulated files or TSVs, the first two of them being permanently updated (the main one containing the latest censuses or official estimates, a second one keeping population clock data for the popclock formulas and the third one -used by default- with a series of estimates for many years (including 2012) elaborated and published on-line by the United Nations Population Division). Then every population density contained in each table is sorted in real time before being pasted into the article (this is particularly important to take into account the correct places or positions resulting from the everchanging popclock calculations). Finally, the areas in square kilometers are converted into square miles by just making use of Wikipedia conversion templates included within my BASIC code, and densities (both in sq km and sq mi) are calculated and displayed in a similar way.

The references, most of which I have taken from official sources (when available), are provided as hyperlinks in the corresponding Source column (except for the UN estimates, which are all contained in a single cited or referenced Excel spreadsheet). I have preferred to automatize everything because it is rather difficult to keep an article like this one updated by hand (believe me, it's quite more tiresome than it may seem at first sight, especially when you like programming ;-). In fact, if you take a look at how the article looked before my first fully macro-generated edit in August 2012, you'll notice that many (if not most) of the estimates corresponded to the year 2009.

I note that when you do your macro generated update to List of countries by population you're adding spaces where they shouldn't be, and removing others where we normally put them. The most notable of these is in the lead image, where "File:File World population.png" becomes "File: File World population.png".[1] If the space is there when you do the update, it isn't removed,[2] so it appears to be happening each time. --AussieLegend (✉) 22:30, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Area data for Sweden in List of sovereign states and dependent territories by population density

On august 7 2012 you changed the area of Sweden in the main table of the article List of sovereign states and dependent territories by population density. I believe your number is incorrect as it does not include the area of lakes and rivers. The area should include lakes and rivers according to the article itself. About my automated compression of the four IMF tables in three GDP articles

Hey there, thanks for your comments. I am not doubting that some of the data in the 4 tables are missing. The reason I reverted the edit was because:

1. You deleted the separate columns for rankings and place the ranks in the same table as the data, which made it difficult to see the rankings when I change the year.

2. You deleted all the other information outside of the 4 tables.

I refer to the last instance in which you also did the same thing in November 2014. Max, thank you for your contributions related to country populations. I have one concern: the column heading "Alternative figure" is vague and it took me a while to realize what it meant. Would you mind if I changed it to "Official figure" and changed the "Date" heading to "Date of official figure"? I think this would make the table much easier to understand. Fertility tables

Concerning the ~6 tables such as List of countries by current and future population (United Nations, constant fertility variant).

First off, I came to the pages because there are wikilink problems. For example, they all have a Strip, which I don't know what it's supposed to mean.

But more importantly... On one hand, the tables now are way too wide. On the other hand, they are now in one table instead of two. Pros and cons both ways. Maybe a table expert, @Frietjes:, has a better idea. Bgwhite (talk) 04:43, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Population list articles

Hi MaxBech1975, and thanks for all the work you did on the various "list of countries by population" articles a while ago. I wanted to let you know though, that I will probably start removing most of the data from many of them in the near future, as I've already done in "List of European countries by population. I wonder if you'd mind taking a look at my comments on the talk page at the talk page, and what I've done there, and let me know if you have any feedback?

It looks to me that prior to April 2013, the population projections were based on published data from the UN or IDB, but at that point you changed your system to calculate them yourself. Is that correct? In that case, I think they crossed the line into original research. It also seems like it would make it so that nobody but you could update the tables. Since you stopped updating them a few years ago, other people have been changing the numbers, sometimes rather randomly, based on who-knows-what. I noticed an IP editor, 90.255.145.51 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), for example in the List of African countries by population a few days ago updated all the projected numbers to "July 1, 2018 projection", but there are no sources or explanations given. I suppose they have some kind of spreadsheet too that they're using, but I'm not sure and they don't communicate, and are today edit-warring their numbers into the European countries article...

Anyway, in most cases now, the numbers are way off from actual currently-available numbers or projections. The bottom line is that they've become a mess, and I think that unless someone is willing to do them over, using published projection numbers, the best thing is just to delete the projection and formula columns, leaving only the sourced "official figure" columns based on sources or population clocks, eg. as done in List of countries and dependencies by population, which seems to be in fairly good condition.
