Topic ban proposal[edit]

Joe job Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 14:42, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Luke,

I was hoping you could explain how you became aware of the topic ban proposal? BilledMammal (talk) 02:25, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Considering that this account was created 20 minutes ago, its highly likely to be meatpuppetry vghfr (✉ Talk) (✏ Contribs) 02:27, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, looks possibly like another person from BYU created an account to come here to support Rachel Helps. — AP 499D25 (talk) 02:38, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I support all innocent people Luke Olson (BYU) (talk) 02:42, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's an interesting question, but I want to know how YOU knew about it first Luke Olson (BYU) (talk) 02:35, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They probably came across the village pump post a couple days ago. vghfr (✉ Talk) (✏ Contribs) 02:40, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you always answer for them? Luke Olson (BYU) (talk) 02:48, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I participated in the VPM discussion and was then pinged, along with every other participant of the VPM discussion, to the ANI thread.
Now that I have answered, will you please do so? BilledMammal (talk) 02:49, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A bunch of people are talking about it online so I came to become an editor. Luke Olson (BYU) (talk) 02:53, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
People within BYU? vghfr (✉ Talk) (✏ Contribs) 02:53, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where online are they talking about it? Could you provide a link to the discussion? BilledMammal (talk) 02:54, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Its a members only discord, you'd have a link already if you were supposed to. Luke Olson (BYU) (talk) 02:55, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can you give us an idea of who the members of this discord are? Employees of BYU? Students of BYU? BilledMammal (talk) 02:56, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you asking me to doxx people? Sorry, I'm not going to jail today Luke Olson (BYU) (talk) 02:57, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We're simply asking if these people have any relation to BYU. We're not asking for any other information. vghfr (✉ Talk) (✏ Contribs) 02:58, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’m not asking you to name specific individuals, just the general characteristics of the membership - who is the discord channel intended for? BilledMammal (talk) 02:59, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Its a mixed group, most of us are BYU related but we have some people from the community and a lot of alumni. We talk school matters, and canceling of the Harold B Lee library has come up. I want to be an editor so I can throw my lot against canceling the library. Luke Olson (BYU) (talk) 03:02, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where on earth did you get the idea that Wikipedia either intends to, or has the power to, 'cancel' a library? AndyTheGrump (talk) 03:05, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Nobody on Wikipedia is cancelling the library. We don't have the power to affect operations at BYU. Also, you should be advised that a topic ban discussion is not a vote. The purpose of such discussions is to see WP:CONSENSUS. Hypothetically, if you and say 1000 of your friends were to generate 1001 accounts and 'vote' to not topic ban, it wouldn't matter. Wikipedia has been around for more than 20 years now. Plenty of groups have tried to tilt conversations by generating lots of new users and 'voting' to do (or not do) something on Wikipedia. It doesn't work. It's not as if we're not aware the accounts are new [1] and have a single purpose on initial sign up. While single purpose accounts are welcome here, a bunch of them showing up at a consensus forming discussion while have absolutely no impact. --Hammersoft (talk) 03:10, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would also highly recommend that you review the VPM discussion (as well as the AIV page) in its entirety before putting forth your opinion on the matter, as I suspect you don't understand the full picture here. vghfr (✉ Talk) (✏ Contribs) 03:14, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Luke, I saw that you pinged me. Wikipedia editors take a dim view of new accounts created to weigh in on specific issues, to the point where it likely does more harm than good. I recommend just letting the issue drop. ~Awilley (talk) 03:07, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Awilley: Are you also a member of this discord channel? BilledMammal (talk) 03:16, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nope ~Awilley (talk) 03:27, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is an ANI and I'm trying to find a reason to NOT indef block as a meatpuppet. Dennis Brown - 03:32, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And Bbb23 beat me to it by a just a couple of minutes. I was waiting for the next reply, but this works. Dennis Brown - 03:33, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Curious why you pinged me[edit]

Hey Luke, I'm curious why you pinged me in this edit. It looks like your account was blocked from editing elsewhere, but you should still be able to respond here. ~Awilley (talk) 04:36, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

your username[edit]

hey, I don't know who you are, but your choice of username makes it look like you are somehow affiliated with BYU. I've been using the "(BYU)" ending on usernames for my students to help identify that they are part of my Wikipedia team in the BYU Library. When you created a username with "(BYU)" at the end, it looked like you were impersonating one of my students. Then when your only edits were on the discussion about my edits, it looks like you created the account only to contribute to that discussion. A typical Wikipedia editor has an edit history on multiple pages--so since your account is so new, it looks really suspicious. If you are part of the BYU campus community I am happy to help you learn how to edit Wikipedia. You can find my email on my userpage under the drop-down menu "User" > "email this user". Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 15:31, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rachel Helps (BYU), this editor was identified as a Joe job here, so they are unlikely to need your help. TSventon (talk) 15:43, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
my bad! it seemed like the kind of thing a well-meaning BYU student could do. Is "CU" data the Checkuser info? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:18, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, WP:CU is ambiguous, but it clearly means Checkuser in this case. TSventon (talk) 16:26, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
