The FPC closing script makes being stupid easier

Exhibits A, B, C, D, E, and F. Makeemlighter (talk) 15:52, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Hmmm... I see. Perhaps it would be beneficial to have the script stop if the filename or username starts with "File:" or "User:"? I'll work on that. Jujutacular talk 17:27, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
That should do the trick! Sorry for the trouble :) Jujutacular talk 18:00, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
That's great, but it's not even what I meant. I just wanted to show you how dumb I can be! This is actually a good addition, though, so I guess my carelessness paid off. Thanks yet again for your hard work. Makeemlighter (talk) 18:11, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Rather than start a new thread, I'll put this here. What happened with this edit? I only noticed it because you fixed it. It didn't look like anything went wrong when I closed it. Makeemlighter (talk) 21:48, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

For some reason, whenever the nomination page title has parentheses in it, the script doesn't remove the transclusion from the list of current nominations. I put a notice at User:Jujutacular/closeFPC#Bugs. It's some issue with regular expressions that I'm not sure how to fix. Jujutacular talk 21:55, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
I inquired at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts to see if anyone knows why this may be happening, although that project doesn't seem too active. I'll go straight to some user talk pages if I don't get a response in the next few days. Jujutacular talk 22:15, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
Okay! I believe I got it fixed. Jujutacular talk 01:21, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Why no holdon?

Do we really need two completely different processes for this? Why not use a HOLDON to get discussion on a talk page? Maury Markowitz (talk) 19:49, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Actually we have 3 deletion processes: WP:CSD, WP:PROD, and WP:AFD. If you don't think the article should be deleted, all you need to do is remove the PROD tag. If another user still thinks it should be deleted, they may bring it to AFD, where it would be discussed. It may seem like too much, but enwiki deletes around 5000 pages every day (according to WP:DELETION), so separating the level of urgency into different streamlined processes is beneficial. Jujutacular talk 20:02, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
My point is why have two "hold" mechanisms? Why not have one? PROD is a slower process than speedy, right? So why do we allow a PROD to be deleted, but a speedy requires more work? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Or why not just use the same process in both cases? Maury Markowitz (talk) 01:47, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
What do you mean, two "hold" mechanisms? And how does a speedy require more work? They generally take about the same amount of work in my experience. CSD is just used in cases where pages are quite obviously in need of deletion. If you want to propose policy changes, there is always WP:VPP. Jujutacular talk 02:36, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Nice work

What a Brilliant Idea Barnstar
For your hard work and ingenuity in making an FPC closure script. The script makes closures quicker and easier, obviating repeated copying and pasting as well as preventing mistakes. Your work has made closers' lives easier, and for that, I award you this barnstar. And for responding to all of my questions, you probably deserve eleven more. Makeemlighter (talk) 01:54, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, and thank you for your detailed bug reports! You've been incredibly helpful in getting all the kinks out. Jujutacular talk 02:43, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Re:FPC script

I've installed it; thanks :) J Milburn (talk) 18:28, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Ummm....

And if I added a HOLDON to a PROD, why do you think I did that? Might it be because I'm contesting the PROD? Probably a good assumption, right? By removing it, but leaving the PROD, the default action is to delete the article. That seems bad. Maury Markowitz (talk) 01:51, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

I'm not going to make an assumption about your intentions. That is why I informed you how to correctly contest the PROD. Jujutacular talk 02:32, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Featured Sounds

Hey there. I noticed that you're a Featured Sounds regular as well. Since the FS promotion process is a ten step mess that, thus far, I have seen at least three people make mistakes doing, myself included, is there any chance that you could adapt your FPC script to create one for FSC?

BTW, as we haven't been introduced, I'm Sven Manguard, and I intend on revitalizing features sounds. Sven Manguard Wha? 03:52, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Good to meet you Sven. Adapting the script to FSC would be difficult. I've closed a few of them, and I get the feeling that the process is not very consistent. I would definitely be able to automate closing the actual nomination page, distributing promotion notices to users, and archiving. Not so sure about the rest. Globe Derby Park

Hi, I see you have recently moved Globe Derby Park, South Australia to Globe Derby Park. Can you please explain the move? I ask this because almost every other Adelaide suburb article is titled in the format [name], South Australia. The only exceptions I have found so far are Adelaide city centre, North Adelaide and Adelaide Airport. The former two don't need the addition , South Australia on the grounds of greater notability and the latter is questionable whether it is or isn't a suburb.
I must also express my disappointment that I didn't have an opportunity to discuss this prior to such a significant change. If I had, I would have pointed out that it is too arguable whether the stadium or the suburb has greater notability hence Globe Derby Park (stadium), Globe Derby Park, South Australia (suburb) and Globe Derby Park (disambig/redirect). Regards, LordVetinari (talk) 01:03, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi LordVetinari. I performed the move at the request of User:Logan (diff has been deleted because of the move), who pointed to the guideline WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Perhaps you could open a discussion at Talk:Globe Derby Park or at Logan's talk page. I could perform any admin actions if necessary when consensus is reached. Regards, Jujutacular talk 04:13, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll do that.LordVetinari (talk) 10:25, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Bloginity

Hi Jujutacular, how are you mate? I was wondering if you will be able to provide your opinion on the page we discussed the other day. It is nominated for deletion still and I think that the article provides non-promotional, quality information that is helpful. Looking forward to your response. Thanks in advance here is a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Bloginity (Knox387 (talk) 15:20, 20 January 2011 (UTC)).

Hi Knox, thanks for dropping by. I respect your position, but I must say that I agree with the others at AFD that Bloginity does not seem to pass Wikipedia's notability guidelines. In the event that the article is deleted, I hope that you can look past it and continue your interest in editing Wikipedia. If you ever need any help or advice feel free to drop me a line. Regards, Jujutacular talk 17:18, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
Hi Jujutacular, thank you very much for your time. I always say that feedback is the breakfast of champions. I have had a bad taste in my mouth the other users and since you came off very friendly I look upon your opinion very well. Do you think perhaps, adding to the page a multiple issues template for notability, source would perhaps, keep it? Regardless, this is has been a great experience for me as it's my first page. I am looking for more practice and might end up deleting other pages in the future as well hehe. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Knox387 (talkcontribs) 17:24, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
No, the template wouldn't really do much towards keeping the article. The only thing that would save it would be if in-depth coverage were found about the website from reliable sources, and that was added to the article. I too had sort of a bad taste in my mouth regarding Wikipedia's processes when I first started, just from hearing experiences of those I knew. What really got me into the project was doing "new page patrol". Basically you watch the list of all newly-created pages (Special:NewPages), and tag those that are clearly inappropriate with "speedy deletion" tags, which can be found at WP:CSD. It helped me to see what is generally acceptable, and what is not. I'm not a huge content creator, but I have since written a few articles that went onto the main page in the "Did you know" section, and written one "featured article". It has proven to be a rewarding experience. Hope this helps. Regards, Jujutacular talk 17:41, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
Brilliant, great advice and thank you so much for your in-depth reply. I hope to stumble over your page in the future Juju, have a great week and happy new year! (Knox387 (talk) 17:59, 20 January 2011 (UTC))
Juju, one quick note. How about this banner? {{WikiProject Magazines|class=|importance=}} (Knox387 (talk) 18:02, 20 January 2011 (UTC)).
That could bring attention from those that are a part of the project. I see you've added it to the article talk page. I have also done "deletion sorting" for the AFD. Which could also help bring attention to those are familiar with the subject. Jujutacular talk 18:08, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
Juju, you're absolutely Jujutacular! thanks (Knox387 (talk) 18:17, 20 January 2011 (UTC)).
Hi Jujutacular. I hope all is well with you, I was hoping to get your attention one more time as I have reconstructed the page and added several more sources to it. I am looking forward to your reply, thanks in advance and thank you so much for your precious time. (Knox387 (talk) 22:03, 21 January 2011 (UTC)).
Hi Knox. Taking another look at the sources in the article, I would say that the main problem is that none of them are really about Bloginity. The sources pass along information from Bloginity, but never really discuss Bloginity itself. Jujutacular talk 01:53, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Hi Jujutacular, good day to you. I have got several feedbacks from a few more users, have refined the page and added several new sources. As the buzz for Bloginity continues, I have found this article today written independently, naming the online magazine as one of the web's best entertainment sites claiming it might be the top 10 as well.[1]. I was hoping you would change your opinion in regards to the Bloginity page and vote 'keep and improve'. Regardless of where this goes, I wanted to thank you for your time, and effort to helping me understand Wikipedia on a much better level as it has given me a great experience of learning how to use the Wikipedia tools such as templates, signatures, and basic communication. Also, I understand from the Bloginity editor in chief that they have an article being written about the brand in Smashing Magazine. Once again, thank you very very much! (96.232.139.95 (talk) 19:18, 24 January 2011 (UTC)).

The Off Hours

Thanks for inviting me to contribute to this article. Yes, I have not done any specific film articles, except as linked to some geographic articles. I have fully read the article that has been written by you so far with five references. I have no knowledge of the suitability of the references that you have used. I searched Google books but could not find any on the film. Since you have invited me, I have made a beginning to give my inputs. I have added some text in the lead. If you find it OK, then I will add some more text in other sections from within the references already included. --Nvvchar. 03:08, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Fine. This is exactly the hook I was thinking of suggesting. I will add some more text. Thanks.--Nvvchar. 05:12, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
I don't understand the problem with the hook. I refixed the reference.--Nvvchar. 01:48, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
It should be fine now. I left a note on the reviewer's talk page. If they don't come back, someone else will eventually review it. Thanks for following up. Jujutacular talk 02:00, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Questions

Hi. I've a few questions for you. First, are these two edits (1 and 2) going to cause the script to fail? They're formatted differently due to the images being part of a set. I'm guessing the answer is "no", but I thought I should check. I'll fix them if necessary. Next, is there anything that might cause the script to fail partway through a closure? I've had this problem on a few nominations lately, and I've had to finish the closure manually. I think it's a problem with my connection (Wikipedia has been strangely lagging for me lately, particularly when I'm on Huggle), but I thought I should ask just in case. Finally, how can I add FP tags to File:BML 144 89 38.ogv and File:BML 144 89 39.ogv? I cannot create the pages because those pagenames are blacklisted. I had this problem once before. Dschwen fixed it for me, but I can't remember how. I think he moved the image on Commons or something like that. I'm pointing this thread out to him, just in case he's around and can help. Thanks for any help you can offer! Makeemlighter (talk) 08:27, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

As for the last problem: those names are blacklisted for a reason. The obvious fix would be renaming the videos to sane names :-). --Dschwen 16:23, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Is there an easy way to do that? I mean, won't that break every link on WP? I don't mind fixing them manually; I just thought there was some secret trick you used! Makeemlighter (talk) 01:32, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Put in a renaming request. Makeemlighter (talk) 03:44, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
I believe WP:GO should be fine. At New Featured Content however, I believe the script will fail to remove the videos when they get down to the bottom of the list. I might have time to figure out a fix for the script in time. Otherwise, they'll just have to be removed manually. As for failing partway through, I'm not sure what would do that as far as the script goes. What exactly is displayed when it fails? Jujutacular talk 17:04, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Nothing is displayed. It just stops. Only the first few actions will be listed. "Got token; got WP:GO; etc." with one or two of them saying "saved". It's as if you pressed pause 1 second into the process. Makeemlighter (talk) 01:32, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm... strange. Most likely just a connectivity issue. I've never seen that happen with mine or with the script I based mine off of. Jujutacular talk 03:32, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
I just closed another nomination, and it worked fine. I think it's a connectivity issue too. I just found it strange that any connection problem was really only noticeable when using that script (and occasionally on Huggle). I'll deal with the set manually, if necessary, when the time comes. No need to add extra code. Sets are too rare to spend much time on. I'll talk to you again next time I think I've broken something :P Cheers, Makeemlighter (talk) 03:44, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

British English

I do believe it is Wikipedia policy that articles about British people should use British English. So perhaps you should learn British English instead of whatever Americanised version it is you use before you revert any more of my edits. 194.80.246.1 (talk) 02:45, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Check the title of the book you're changing: [1]. Jujutacular talk 02:48, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Check the title of the book you're changing: [2]. 194.80.246.1 (talk) 02:50, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
And the cover of the book you linked says "drug". I'll leave you to it. Jujutacular talk 02:57, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
I note Waterstone's also lists the title as "drugs baron", but clearly shows the book cover saying "drug baron". Both the phrase drug baron and drugs baron are used by the BBC in roughly equal measure. I think we should be going with what the cover says. J Milburn (talk) 10:40, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Greetings

Hi there, you have been assigned as my mentor. I am an MPA student in an environmental policy class. I will be doing some work on wikipedia this semester, including writing an original article. Just wanted to introduce myself. Slowly but surely, I think I am figuring this out but thanks in advance for any guidance or assistance. Have a great day!Vince.b.green (talk) 20:04, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Great to hear from you. I see you've posted a review of the article Genetically modified organism on the talk page: very good work, it appears very thorough. Feel free to implement some changes if you feel you can improve it: "Be bold, revert, discuss" is a commonly used editing paradigm throughout Wikipedia. Regards, Jujutacular talk 22:02, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Uh oh, not again!

I just closed this nomination, and I was surprised to discover that FP, FPC, and FPC archives were all removed from my watchlist. It's especially strange considering that my watchlist was fine after closing a nomination less than a day ago. Maybe just an example of the stochastic nature of the universe? I'll also point out this closure. I don't see any problem with underscores (like the earlier bug), and it only happened that once. So maybe Wikipedia is just trying to make me doubt my sanity? I don't need any help with that... Makeemlighter (talk) 20:54, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Very, very strange! The only thing I can think of is possibly your page cache needs clearing... did you do either of those recent closures on a different computer from normal? I'm very surprised that the watchlist issue came up again -- it was a very identifiable issue that should have been taken care of with this edit to the script in November. I'm doubting my sanity and I'm supposed to know the inner workings of that script! Maybe sometime soon I'll ask a more experienced coder to take a look at the script. I'm sure that much of the code could be written more effectively. Jujutacular talk 21:47, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
The watchlist issue persists for me. I've been using the same computer as always. Makeemlighter (talk) 01:42, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
That is frustrating. I can't figure out what would be causing that. I may still try to to get a more experienced coder to take a look. Jujutacular talk 14:14, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Just wanted to note: I just used the script on Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/File:Zebras and wildebeests, Ngorongoro.jpg and had the same watchlist issue... I'm wondering if this has something to do with the MediaWiki software that was just upgraded to 1.17, which includes this "Resource Loader". Jujutacular talk 23:56, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

For the record, in my recording, I also added a second track of the midi under a pedal, to try and get a little more of a "ringing out" of the piano, but I presume that'd be superfluous to you. If this goes well, I've been reworking an old Frog Legs Rag thing to more appropriate performance standards, and could give you a MIDI of that too. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:27, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Looked Frog Legs Rag over. It's about half done. I'll finish it up tomorrow. Adam Cuerden (talk) 18:48, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
And here you go! File:Frog Legs Rag 3.mid Adam Cuerden (talk) 00:09, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Just to note: I fixed a couple minor things with it now =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 00:26, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
I should probably do The Entertainer next. It's such a famous piece, and lacks a sufficiently accurate recording. Adam Cuerden (talk) 00:35, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Indeed, The Entertainer would be good. Great work on the Frog Legs Rag, I'll have time to run it through my software tomorrow. Jujutacular talk 03:54, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Just remembered I put this up

This shows a small number of the techniques I use to humanise a MIDI. It's more complicated than that, of course, but those few bars showed things that were a bit easier to describe as rules. Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:20, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Three little pigs

Hi, great restoration. What is the technical term for the ?dotted way in which the work was produced? Tony (talk) 10:24, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, it's halftone. Jujutacular talk 14:02, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Edit summary

I was recently blocked for giving a misleading edit summary. Is that a sufficient reason to block someone? 84.13.50.235 (talk) 10:27, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

That all depends on what the edit summary was exactly, what the edit was, and your history of contributions. Jujutacular talk 11:38, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
It was this edit summary 84.13.50.235 (talk) 15:00, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
I don't have much background knowledge of the situation or of the related intricacies of Shia vs Shi'a or of Twelver, but it does seem to me that the block was warranted. I suggest that you accept the block, use your time to think about how your editing should change based on the block and warnings you have received, and come back in April to edit more effectively. Jujutacular talk 17:21, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Its not a big deal, i'm harldy on wiki nowadays anyway, but this is the 2nd time i feel i've been blocked disproportionally by the same admin. The first time i was blocked for making one revert, ignoring WP:3RR. This time, the same admin seems to violate WP:INVOLVED, as SoV was involved in my reverts and my twinkle thread. Btw, i'm not the first person who has claimed SarekofVulcan is violating WP:INVOLVED. Other editors with thousands of edits have said the same thing. This admin seems a little reckless in my opinion. Btw, there was a unanimous consensus for my "shi'a" change to "shia" here. 84.13.50.235 (talk) 19:35, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Mentoring students: be sure to check in on them

This message is going out to all of the Online Ambassadors who are, or will be, serving as mentors this term.

Hi there! This is just a friendly reminder to check in on what your mentees are doing. If they've started making edits, take a look and help them out or do some example fixes for them, if they need it. And if they are doing good, let them know it!

If you aren't mentoring anyone yet, it looks like you will be soon; at least one large class is asking us to assign mentors for them, and students in a number of others haven't yet gotten to asking ambassadors to be their mentors, but may soon. --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:06, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

talk:The fried chicken flu

The fried chicken flu is actually an episode of the boondocks. That conversation could be moved to Talk:List of The Boondocks episodes. Inka888 02:44, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

That would have to be history-merged in order to preserve the edits. It is much simpler to just leave it where it is. Still, WP:CSD#G8 would not apply as it is a talk page of an existing page. There is no real reason to delete it. Jujutacular talk 03:46, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Frog Legs rag

can you add a slight slowdown and decrease the velocity[*] slightly at 1:54, just before the repeat? On the score, it's the first system, fourth bar on this page. It just doesn't work at that volume and speed. Return to normal speed just after the bit with the grace notes, that is, for the fourth beat in the measure (presuming we take this as effectively 4/8).

[*] MIDI has velocity and volume; velocity is how hard the piano key is struck, e.g. dynamics, whereas volume is how near the microphone is to the piano, roughly.

Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:15, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Sure, I need to get some sleep right now, but I will work on that tomorrow. Do you feel the overall tempo is okay though? Jujutacular talk 04:18, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Oh, definitely. If it helps, I have a tweaked midi I can upload. If you make exactly the same changes to it, it should be perfect. Actually, I'll throw that up now. Let's me make one other minor tweak. Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:24, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

File:Frog Legs Rag 4.mid - Make the same changes to this, and it should be stunning. I just added a couple more accents in one bit, and on the ascending/descending octaves with the swell and fade, I made the swell a bit less, as it was just too different from the rest of the section. This is going to be fantastic =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:27, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Uploaded a new version over the old: File:Frog Legs Rag 3.ogg. I believe I've got the tempo and velocity changes correct, let me know if that's not what you were thinking. Jujutacular talk 04:07, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
HThat's perfect. Let's run it by people - we can aways tweak it if they complain about something, right? =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 07:24, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Well you too look like you're making a good team. Oh and by the way...

Frog Legs Rag

Feel free to tweak how you're described. I kind of wanted to play down the MIDI aspect of this, so that people don't prejudge. Adam Cuerden (talk) 07:34, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

I'm not really comfortable with calling this a "performance", but we'll see how this goes. Jujutacular talk 21:10, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
It's hard to come up with the right word for it, though. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:20, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Mentorship

Hello,

My name is Dustin, I am a graduate student studying West European History, Public Affairs, at Indiana University Bloomington. I am currently in class participating in the User WikiProject United States Public Policy project. I would be thrilled if you would be my Wikipedia mentor. I must warn you though that this is my first time editing on Wikipedia! Also my proposed topic is Balance of Payments. Please let me know if there is any other information you would like to know.

Dunichol (talk) 21:49, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

I would love to be your mentor. I hope you enjoy your time contributing to this project. If you ever have questions, leave a comment here on my talk page and I will respond shortly. You may also try IRC anytime, where usually someone will be able to help you instantly. Good luck with your coursework, and welcome to Wikipedia! Jujutacular talk 22:47, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

FS and F and A

Hi, I'd like to keep the pics against that very long vertical column of sound files, but there are problems unless you display on a wide window. Any suggestions? Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2011-02-28/Features_and_admins Tony (talk) 13:35, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Integrating the image into the {{listen}} template would be the best option in my opinion. Try tweaking that, it may work. Jujutacular talk 16:05, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, Juju. You've made it feasible for this week. I've posted at WT:FSC for further suggestions. Tony (talk) 10:31, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
