Nebiryraw I

Vegaswikian: the category "Dead in 1601 BC" has nothing to do here, no egyptologist will tell you Nebiryraw I died exactly in 1601 BC. This date was proposed by Ryholt but it is heavily debated and even Ryholt advises caution. The category "Year of Birth Unknown" is valid but a bit stupid, if you are serious about it include all pharaohs for a start. Iry-Hor (talk) 21:08, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
If the article gives a date that makes Category:1601 BC deaths valid, then it is a valid category for that article. Unknown birth year is a valid category and while stupid it is still valid. You can take it to WP:CFD if you think it should be deleted. Note that if the year of death is truly not known, you should use Category:Year of death unknown. Isn't it allowed in en.Wiki to use links within the teaser? If so, you can simply link "guenon", "zookeeper" and "Ancient Egypt". Nephiliskos alright I just wrote the lead and put up the article on DYK, see here, bottom of the list just before the 2 September entries. Be on the look out for the review, which should be quick an pose no problem, but sometimes the reviewers ask for a few stuff. A cartouche in Lepsius

Hi. I was leafing through Lepsius' Denkmaeler searching for something about Neferhotep I; I've found few things here (chose "Band IV" then search page 151), probably nothing of these could be useful in Neferhotep's article, but in figure K I've found Sekhemre-wadjkhaw Sobekemsaf cartouche on the right, I think. But I definitely can't read the cartouche in the top of the picture. Could you help me? --Khruner (talk) 10:00, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Khruner thank you very much for these indications. I have seen these plates referenced in Ryholt's book and initially chose to put alternative, more recent, references for the rock inscriptions of Sehel and Konosso, namely de Morgan "Catalogue des monuments" dated to 1894. In view of the fact that the more references the better and that de Morgan's reference isn't that recent I will add Lepsius' book. Again thank you for pointing this out! If you do not mind, I will also upload the plates of Lepsius concerning Neferhotep on commons given the quality of the drawing and the fact that Neferhotep's article could use an additional image. Concerning Sobekemsaf, I can confirm that plates L and K are listed in Ryholt's book as belonging to Sobekemsaf II, which is remarkable given the scarcity of pictures we have of him. I suppose you might want to upload these on commons, otherwise let me know and I will do it. For the cartouche on the top of plate K, it is simply reading Sekhemrewadjkhau Sobekemsaf. Indeed, the first sign is the sun disk, the second is Sekhem, the third is Wadj, the fourth is Sobek on top of the Saf sign the fifth (looks like a wiggle) is in fact the owl for M and the last is Khau (with the 3 bars for the plural). The way the M owl is drawn looks like the hieratic for M so that gave the reading away. 19:54, 27 September 2014 (UTC) Iry-Hor (talk)

Some kings in Lepsius

Hi. I'm still looking for something fine in the Denkmaeler, and it looks like I need again your help... here the link, choose Band VIII and search for page 257, figure a.
You should see a 22nd Dynasty relief (I know it's not your favourite period, though...). In my opinion, the king depicted twice with Amun-Ra is Hedjkheperre-setepenre Takelot-saaset-meramun (that should be Takelot II), in the right scene is followed by his son, the High Priest of Amun Osorkon (future Osorkon III), while on the left I suspect that he repeated the scene with his father instead, the HPA Nimlot, himself son of king Osorkon-sabast-meramun (Osorkon II for friends).
If you can confirm my readings, I'm going to crop the relief multiple times in order to illustrate the Wikipedia articles of all the trio... --Khruner (talk) 19:06, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Khruner, sorry for the delay. Yes I read the same thing, going from left to right, the first cartouche is definitely "Takelot Siese Meryamun" second is "Osorkon Sibastet Meryamun", third cartouche I have no clue, fourth is "Takelot Siese Meryamun" again, 5th (top) Hedjkheperre Setepenre and below is probably the same cartouche as the first, last two cartouches seem to belong to Takelot again. The third cartouche should be a [Karo]mama, likely Takelot II's mother and Nimlot's wife. Thanks for the confirmation, this relief is a nice source of pics for many poorly illustrated articles, I'll crop it just now! --Khruner (talk) 20:07, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
I can see the mama part indeed but did not know that [Karo]mama even existed, as you know I am not really into post 1000 BC Egypt... Samont and Ankhu

Hi Iry-Hor, after a bit of FIP I was wandering through the SIP and suddendly remembered an issue concerning two viziers, Samont/Zamonth and Ankhu, which some sources claims they likely were father and son. The problem is, Samonth was in charge under Amenemhat III while Ankhu was under Khendjer and Khaankhre, and I find that difficult to explain talking about human beings. Did you have some clarifying sources about those two viziers? --Khruner (talk) 22:13, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello Khruner, the only source I have talking about these guys is Rice's Who is who in Ancient Egypt. Rice states that Ankhu was vizier from Khendjer until Sobekhotep IV so serving under Khendjer, Imyremeshaw, Sehetepkare Intef, Seth Merirbre, Sobekhotep III, Neferhotep I and Sobekhotep IV (this is somewhat strange given how Sobekhotep III, Neferhotep I and Sobekhotep IV distanciated themselves from their predecessors). Note that Khaankhre reigned 4 to 8 kings before Khendjer depending on the scholar. This means that Ankhu must have started his office c. 1760 (if we follow Ryholt on the datation), at which point he must have been say (at least) 20-30 years hold. Since he died during Sobekhotep IV's reign c. 1725 one can safely say that he could not have been born much earlier than 1790 - 1800 which would made him nearly 70-80 years old at death. Thus I would estimate his life to be something like c. 1795 - c. 1725 and given that Amenenemhat III died c. 1810 BC, a young vizier of him could possibly have had a son c. 1795 BC (again such a vizier would have been born at least c. 1840-1830 BC and would thus have fathered Ankhu at 35-45 years old). Rice does not have Zamonth, but has a Sa-Mont who lived c. 1950 BC and was apparently a prison governor. Finally, about Ankhu, Rice also says: Ankhu appears to have had an extensive family, and a number of his descendants occupied important positions in the state; one such was Iymeru, also Vizier to King Sobekhotep IV. It makes sense but I'm not fully convinced, since Samont seems to have been active under Years 6-9 of Amenemhat III in some minor offices according to Grajetzki (so, c. 1855-50 BCE I guess) and it seems reasonable to assume that he was at least 20 in this date so he may have been born in c. 1875-70. In this case, he should have been a centenary man when fathered Ankhu. Not impossible but very unlikely, furthermore he surely had other sons earlier, and logically they should have managed to become viziers well before Ankhu, or their sons if they predeceased their father... Anyway, maybe is better leave things as the are until someone discovers something more about that. Khruner (talk) 14:10, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
If Samont was active early in the reign of Amenemhat III then yes I don't see how it would be possible for him to have fathered Ankhu. The real question is when was he active? If he started his career at the end of the reign of Amenemhat III then it could work out (as I explained above) but otherwise I am like you and won't buy it. Even today with all the modern medicine I don't know any centenarian fathering a child so I guess at the time it would not only have been exceptional to live that long but even more to then father a child. Looking in again, I have just noticed a phrase that made me wonder: "the several attestations of Neferhotep found north of Egypt". Should "found north" be "found in the north...", i.e. within Egypt rather than to the north of it (which would be the Mediterranean, I suppose)? Tim riley talk 23:59, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
Sorry for the intrusion, the aforementioned attestations came from Palestine and Phoenicia, thus "found in the north" (i.e. within Egypt) is surely incorrect. "Found northeast" maybe would be more explicative? -- Khruner (talk) 10:51, 21 December 2014 (UTC)

Georges Goyon

Hi, I was looking for infos about Georges Goyon and found that he was born in 1905 but his death date is unknown (assuming that he is passed away indeed, but if not he should be nearly 110 now). Since you and he are compatriots, do you know if there is a French way to discover something like his obituary? Khruner (talk) 20:05, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

I could not find anything on his (probable) death date. There is a 2014 necrology for a Georges Goyon in a country village in France but I belive this is more likely to be someelse with the same name. The latest articles/1st edition books by the Egyptologist Goyon date to the mid 80s although there have been new editions as late as 2004. Goyon seems to have a son Jean-Claude who is an egyptologist as well. Incredibly all the sources I have found on Goyon speak of him in the present, but that would make him 110 now, i.e. one of the very few oldest men on earth. I would estimate that he died at the end of the 80s based on his activity seemingly stoping at the time, but could not find any solid confirmation. Iry-Hor (talk) 12:56, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

About GA

Sure it's easy, the steps to propose an article for GA are described here. You will have to copy and paste a standard tempalte at the top of the talk page, selecting a subtopic while doing so. Typically the subtopic will be "Royalty, nobility and heraldry" (e.g. for a pharaoh) or "Art and architecture" (for pyramids). Your article will then automatically appear on the list of nominated articles until someone picks it up for review (this can take months, unless you can find someone), The reviewer will then make a more or less thorough review and if you address all his points, the article should pass to GA. One last piece of advise, which I learned recently: using the sfn template for references looks extremely good (see Shepseskare). Also mandatory: the page number should appear in all book references (i.e. the precise page(s) where the info referred to is mentioned). In the end, it is fun! Good luck! Translating French sources

We talked in December about how I might send you "a few paragraphs" of French to render into English for the Isis article. By typing up French articles and pasting them into Google Translate, I got the general sense of what they said. Then I narrowed the text down to the passages that I may need to cite for the article, for which I need a better translation than machines can provide. Unfortunately, it turned out to be more like seven pages from several articles. Would you be willing to translate that much? My article writing is moving so slowly that I won't need the translations for at least the next three months, so you wouldn't be under heavy time pressure.

Nephiliskos I have had to remove your statements concerning the Abydos King List: it is precisely the only one to record the 7th and 8th Dynasties of the First Intermediate Period. I am aware that the 9th and 10th dynasties are missing from the list but it seems incorrect to state that the entire First Intermediate Period is missing. Ok, for first: the original and scientific primary name for that artifact is Giza writing board. It was created by an high official named Mesdjerw during the end of 5th dynasty or (more possibly) at the beginning of the 6th dynasty. The writing board is unique, it is divided into 5 chapters: chapter 1-2 is empty, chapter 3 lists all kings that Mesdjerw may have practiced the mortuary cult for. It also lists deities and domains in which Mesdjerw may have held office. And chapter 4-5 lists traditional sacrificial birds and fishes. The first three chapters are repeated four times each (like a refrain), the sacrificial list is unrepeated. I was already up to write an article about that, since the German Wiki has one.
