Thanks for your work on 2021 Samoan constitutional crisis. I have a question : you added "Speaker of the House Leaupepe Toleafoa Faafisi". According to the article Leaupepe Toleafoa Faafisi he "retired at the April 2021 election." Idiot savant

In French an Idiot savant is a quite funny name. I like it. But you knowledge about Samoan names doesn’t seem to be very “savant”. Most authoritative sources like RNZ here or local Samoa Observer, doesn’t (never?) use the complete name of the Former PM of Samoa. But his main title and the usual name. As for customary usage, titles are always put as prefixes (like Sir in English) to the names of matai. Reverting saying that the the complete name is the only one used is not true. Continuing this discussion about (full) names in Samoa, I also noticed that common use is to name the Prime Minister as Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegao (with his title included in his name) and sometimes like Tuila'epa Dr Sa'ilele Malielegao, with his title separated from his (short) name. As already told, Tuilaepa is only a title, and in the English names Wikipedia does not add "Sir" or "Dr." or "Hon." to the names. In Fiji, we do not add "Ratu" to the names, even if Fijian newspapers add Ratu to the chiefs of Fiji. Please, reply here.--RotachZ (talk) 06:49, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

I suggest both of you take a look at WP:COMMONNAME. Specifically "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources)". This may include titles e.g. Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. For Samoans, it is best to use whatever they are referred to in English language sources such as those linked above (e.g. RNZ, the Samoa Observer, Samoa Global News etc). So "Fiame Naomi Mata'afa", not just "Naomi Mata'afa", or "Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi", not "Sailele Malielegaoi" (because nobody calls them that). This satisfies the criteria of recognizability and naturalness - naming articles after what people would Google. It also seems to satisfy the policy of consistency, in that there seems to be a policy of including matai titles in article names in the past (which I have naturally followed when adding new ones).

It is complicated by the fact that there have been multiple rounds of title-stripping and renaming, plus efforts to correct typography to include okinas, and there are a lot of redirects in place (e.g. for Tuilaepa). I've restored things to what they were before the latest bout, on the basis that this reflected both policy and a previous consensus. I've also raised the issue on the WikiProject Samoa talk page in the hope that someone there can produce some useful guidance for the future. --IdiotSavant (talk) 11:52, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your explanation, but I am not connvinced by the fact that NZ Herald, RNZ and other Samoa medias are always using only the name with the title. And most of time, they also forget 'okina. Okina is now compulsory in Samoan (since 2012 only). Tuimaleali'ifano is still a title, and the correct writing of his name is Va'aleto'a Sualauvi II, with 2 apostrophes in his first name. People doesn't know Samoan on WPen:, and this is not helpulf to put very long names with titles. We are far from the case: Prince Harry. Imho.--RotachZ (talk) 12:24, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your edit of the Talk Page of my article on Elisapeta Toeava. It is not the first time you have made such an edit, which seems to be required because of 1. My laziness in completing the Talk Page correctly and 2. a BOT programming problem that needs to be corrected. When I prepared the Talk Page I inserted "WikiProject Samoa |class=Start |importance=Low" and this seems to have been changed by User:AnomieBOT to "WikiProject Polynesia|class=Start|WS=yes|WS-importance=Low|category=". Wikiproject Polynesia comment

Thanks for noticing my edit on the talk page of Pacific Underground where I (incorrectly) added the Polynesia Wikiproject. In some contexts New Zealand is included in a definition of Polynesia so it is good for me to learn before I encourage others to do the same. You mentioned the members of Pacific Underground could be included maybe? Do you mean biographies of Polynesian people but who live in New Zealand could be included? Thanks for getting in touch. Firstly, that's a nice, solid article and great work. Secondly, I'm not going to start an edit-war over wikiproject classification, so if you think that it also belongs in WP Polynesia (its in cat: Polynesian culture after all), just go ahead and tag it again. My reasoning for removing it was:

* WP Polynesia has sortof geographically excluded Australia, NZ and Hawaii in order to keep its focus on the island countries (sortof - there's some Hawaiian and Māori content in there, usually around mythology, which was all added years ago), so I've followed this in excluding NZ stuff by default unless there's a very obvious strong link.

* For people, I've been going by place of birth or residence or citizenship (or sports team for sports bios). Were they born in / live in / play for (for sports bios) one of WP Polynesia's target countries? So e.g. Oscar Kightley was born in Samoa, and Robbie Magasiva was raised there, so I'd include them, but David Fane is from Auckland so I'd leave him under WPNZ. (There are a lot of Pasifica NZ and Australian bios which could be added BTW; I've been adding them in whenever I notice one).

None of this is any sort of official policy; I just seem to have adopted the initial assessment role; other people will make different judgements.--IdiotSavant (talk) 09:32, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Vavaʻu Academy for Critical Inquiry and Research

Hello, IdiotSavant,

I'd like to encourage you to start using Twinkle, an excellent editing tool, when you tag pages for deletion. You can do a lot of other activities with Twinkle, post talk page warnings to troublesome editors, tag articles that have problems, report vandals to noticeboard, post discretionary sanction notices, etc., but it is really great for tagging pages for deletion, whether CSD, PROD, AFD/RFD/CFD/etc. It's great because once you set up your Twinkle Preferences to "Notify page creator", Twinkle will post a notice on your behalf to the editor who created the page you just tagged, letting them know that the page might be deleted and why.

As you can see by the notice above this one for Arus Sem, sometimes bots will step in and inform editors when articles they created have been tagged but I've found bots to be inconsistent in doing this and in the case of this PROD you tagged, the bot never posted a talk page notice. Plus, I think it's better for a deletion notice to come from a fellow editor rather than a bot. Any way, I think once you try out Twinkle, you, like most page patrollers and many admins, will start using it every day as it means you don't have to remember a lot of different templates. Coming in good faith but I'm genuinely confused about this edit. What are the criteria for conclusion not being met? If the issue is that she's only of Polynesian descent and has never lived in the region, then I'm confused why Dwayne Johnson apparently qualifies despite the same applying to him? If the issue is that WikiProject Samoa would be the more appropriate to tag, that's fair but that project does not have a talk page template yet and recommends using the one I added instead. Not born in Samoa, doesn't live there, hasn't represented it internationally (this is used a lot for sports people). Merely being of Polynesian descent isn't enough, otherwise we'd be categorising people in NZ under WPUK. Johnson has a matai title, which is why he's included.

WP Samoa is a subset of WP Polynesia. As is WP American Samoa for people from there. IdiotSavant (talk) 01:55, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Gotcha, that's fair I suppose. My main rationale for adding it was that the subject is not just of Samoan descent but is particularly public and outspoken about that heritage: has a malu tattoo, wore a Samoan-designed tapa cloth outfit to a red carpet event, has interviewed Johnson twice and addressed him in Samoan, has attributed much of her public persona to her Samoan upbringing, and in particular has spoken on Samoan culture and American media representation of Samoans on a number of platforms (interviews, podcasts, social media, etc.). I respect if that still doesn't qualify her, but that's why I thought she might be of interest to the project, is that it seems to be a prominent part of her public profile and the work she does. Category talk:Papua New Guinea history-related lists

I'm far from being absolutely clear on the proper syntax of talk page WikiProject banners, but I'd just assume get it right than not. That's why I generally refer to a closely related talk page if at all in doubt.

So I'm now confused how this edit of yours could be correct. How am I, or anyone, supposed to know that Category talk:Papua New Guinea history-related lists should link to WikiProject Melanesia when both Category talk:Papua New Guinea-related lists and Category talk:History of Papua New Guinea link directly to Wikipedia:WikiProject Papua New Guinea; not to mention, there is Wikipedia:WikiProject Papua New Guinea? --DB1729^talk 03:16, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

I'm not sure of the exact history, but WikiProject PNG is now nested within Melanesia. Things tagged as Melanesia:PNG show up under PNG just fine - but things tagged solely under WikiProject PNG don't show up in the Melanesia stats. There's a similar series of nested wikiprojects for Wikipedia:WikiProject Polynesia (Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands etc), though it has used aliases to ensure consistent tagging. Late reply. I don't understand what "bodge it into Template:WikiProject Papua New Guinea" means so I didn't know how it could help or not. I put off replying and forgot about it until now.

I notice you haven't corrected the other two I mentioned in the same way. Again, before I created Category talk:Papua New Guinea history-related lists, I consulted both Category talk:Papua New Guinea-related lists and Category talk:History of Papua New Guinea and simply followed suit how those pages did it. Is there some reason those pages should not get the same (WikiProject Papua New Guinea → WikiProject Melanesia PNG=yes) change? Have you just not got to those yet because of whatever system you're using? Maybe you're unconcerned per other stuff exists? Maybe you just never noticed or failed to glean the situation from my original post? or some other reason entirely? DB1729^talk 21:02, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
