Completion of Counter-Vandalism Academy training[edit]

CVU Academy Graduate
Congratulations from both myself and all of the instructors at the Counter Vandalism Unit Academy on your successful completion of the Counter Vandalism Unit Academy. You completed your final exam with a score of 100%. Well done! Further information on your achievement can be found here.

It has been a real pleasure working with you over the past few weeks. You are the first person I have worked through the entire curriculum with and graduated, and it's been great to work with someone who is so careful and diligent in their approach. Please know that I will be very happy to answer any remaining questions that you might have now, or that arise in the future, or even just to lend an extra pair of eyeballs if you're not sure what to do about something. I hope that our paths cross in future. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 11:16, 27 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unjust rollback[edit]

Under what pretense of impartiality have you rolled back my edits to Self-induced abortion? It looks like they've been reverted for purely ideological reasons, but I'm sure that can't be right. Would you care to explain your course of action? 93.41.96.169 (talk) 19:18, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 93.41.96.169, thanks for reaching out. Here is the rationale of my revert: with your first edit of 15:10, 3 April 2019 you removed the text "[...]and are in fact safer than childbirth." and its relevant source, your edit summary comment was "Removed advertisement.": the source you removed is a scientific study published on a specialistic journal, not a promotional link, thus your action was a removal of sourced content, for which I would expect at least a discussion in the article's talk page before removing. Your second edit of 15:15 of the same day, you added the text "generally having an IQ over 70" without providing a reliable source to support your claim that seems at least quite debatable and commented your edit as "Removed irrelevant information about a specific world region." which is not obviously the case. Summarizing, your edits broke at least three wikipedia policies, removal of sourced content without previous discussion with other users, adding unsourced content and bad use of the edit summary. This, in my opinion, fully justify my revert. I hope my explanation is clear enough. Regards, Horst Hof (talk) 06:45, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Linking to edit revisions (diffs)[edit]

Hi there. I noticed over at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/TechnicalDevityoutube (it's been moved) that you posted links as evidence but your links were not formatted correctly, for example you posted a link to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=864589084&oldid= ([1]) but that's not correct. I can see what you were trying to do: I'm pretty sure you meant to link to this edit, but somehow you replaced the title of the page in the URL with the edit's revision ID (864589084). If you want to link using the revision ID then the URL is https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=864589084, or you can use the special wikilink Special:Diff/864589084. Just so you know for next time. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 12:22, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2018 election voter message[edit]

Hello, Horst Hof. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the CVUA[edit]

Hi - I've created a new training page for you at User:Girth_Summit/CVUA/Horst_Hof. Please go to that page, read the contents, and then respond to the first bit about Twinkle, and we can begin. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 14:21, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

OK, Thanks! Horst Hof (talk) 14:22, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Just a heads up - I botched the ping in my last update of the page; not sure whether the ping was resent when I fixed it, but the next assignment is on there now. In case you haven't come across it, the recent changes feed is a good way to find vandalism. You can set filters to help identify problematic editing. I normally look at it with the following filters applied: Likely bad faith; Human (not bot); Latest revision; Page edits; Page creations; Logged actions. Note that you can save different filter settings, so you can easily switch between different settings depending on what you're doing. Hope that's helpful - cheers, GirthSummit (blether) 17:44, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Girth Summit: Thanks for the useful suggestions. I already used the filter in order to check malicious changes in height and weight of various sport personalities. I didn't know I could save different filter settings instead. Now I'm trying to familiarize with the new tools, my approach is usually quite prudential in order not to cause damages. Problem on recent changes[edit]

Hi!- This is PH1SS1KS and I recently got a message saying that you took down a change I was making. What I was trying to do was insert a photo into a page to make a quick and easy edit, however, I am new to this and I do not know how to do it. If you would be kind, would you be able to help me? Thank you! PH1SS1KS (talk) 17:23, 5 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @PH1SS1KS:, thanks for your message. I reverted your edit because the link you added disrupted the infobox template. Did you look at the article after you hit the 'publish changes' button? Take a look at this link, as you can see there is no image but only a long series of characters. That's why I reverted your edit. If you want to learn how to upload images or other media you can read this help page. Regards, Horst Hof (talk) 19:39, 5 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Italian IPA once more[edit]

Could I as you to have a look at Special:Contribs/5.170.44.0/22, please? I blocked the range for a week, but want to make sure that I didn't inadvertently end up on the wrong side of a feud. Favonian (talk) 17:17, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Favonian:, as far as I can see the recent edits by that IP range are consistent with the consensus reached on Wikiproject linguistics.
But, about this issue, can I ask you to compare these two messages Special:Diff/881761386 to this Special:DIff/877241290. don't you think that wordings, style, etc. are absolutely identical? And both on the same matter, italian IPA? This cannot be a mere coincidence and in this case your block and that of @Ohnoitsjamie: would be otherwise justified: block evasion of Van Meterik (blocked for abusing multiple accounts).
I also opened a report on WP:ANI on this issue but it has been archived without resolution. In case you are interested in knowing more about that, have a look here and here. My opinion is that we are confronting an experienced and clever abuser and building a sort of profile may prove useful to deal with it. Horst Hof (talk) 08:11, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback granted[edit]

Hi Horst Hof. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! ~ Amory (utc) 12:12, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations - this is well-deserved, and I have no doubt that you will use it properly. GirthSummit (blether) 14:47, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot, it is also thanks to your very valuable coaching assistance if I'm improving my skills in this fascinating day-by-day task. Horst Hof (talk) 14:55, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

WP:EMERGENCY[edit]

After your revert on my talk page, (thanks for that!) I wanted to make sure that you knew about our guidelines about reporting threats of violence.

I doubt that it was a serious threat, but I've emailed the email address listed on that page so the experts can confirm it. -- I dream of horses  If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{U|I dream of horses}} to your message  (talk to me) (My edits) @ 07:24, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @I dream of horses:, I'm aware of those guidelines since I dealt with how to manage that kind of situations in my counter-vandalism course. In this case I was waiting to see if that user was going to make further disruptive actions and than I would have decided if and how to report it. But thanks for reminding me about that, I really appreciate when other users spend their time to give a hint aimed to improve my skills. Cheers. Horst Hof (talk) 07:34, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Luna moth[edit]

Hi Horst Hof Saba imran bhat (talk) 09:45, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I left note to Saba that what is being seen in Kashmir, India, may be a different species of 'moon moth' rather than the moth native to North America. Although always possible that human action deliberate/accidental has resulted in this being an invasive species. Will definitely need reliable source. Marco Kurz[edit]

In relation to Marco Kurz Wikipedia page, Bro I don’t know what you’re on about. You’re doing the exact same thing and telling me off for it. If you try telling me off for “vandalism”, then get rid of all the other crap that’s not right for the page. Nah? Old Town Road[edit]

Why does it say this is a country song when it is clearly not a country song. Saying this song is country is a disgrace to country music. Butterbean172 (talk) 13:19, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Butterbean172, thanks for reaching me out. I reverted your edit (this one) as it is an undisputable disruption of the article. If you are not sure about how to contribute to Wikipedia, please, carefully read wikipedia policies and guidelines (I left a welcome message on your talk with some useful links) before making further edits. Thanks and regards, Horst Hof (talk) 13:27, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

hi[edit]

Can I write articles on Wikipedia without creating an account?

202.67.38.26 (talk) 03:10, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 202.67.38.26, of course you can, but as everybody else, when doing this, you are invited to respect the policies of the community. I'm going to post a welcome message on your talk page where you will find the links to the most important guidelines you are expected to observe when editing wikipedia articles. Regards and happy editing. Horst Hof (talk) 06:49, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

hi horst hof ! can i ask you a question about your activity on wikipedia ?

Hi Zreglhv, I have posted a welcome message on your talk page, where you can find an answer for the more frequent questions a new user may be interested in. Regards and happy editing. Horst Hof (talk) 11:47, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, my question was about you. And it's the following: why don't we meet each other in Istanbul one of these days? Choose the place you prefer, for me it's ok anywhere. I can't wait to read your answer; I can't wait to see you in person too! Zreglhv (talk) 11:57, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's bad manners not to answer when you're asked a question... Even more if it's an invitation. Is there anything wrong in demanding a face to face meeting? I've also told you that you are free to choose the place you prefer. All I want is just to see how the person behind that nickname of yours is like in real life and also to talk about your activity in here, this should make you proud not loath :-) Zreglhv (talk) 13:47, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Zreglhv. I'm sorry but I do not want to meet anyone. Please also note that it is not appropriate to make invitations like that to users you have zero interactions with. I would also ask you to stop leaving inappropriate messages on my talk page. Thanks. Horst Hof (talk) 15:18, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

re: mail[edit]

Hi, i've checked a random user from your list and it shares the IP whit another 3 users in the list and whit the user that you suspect. I will ask a confirm at a it.wiki CU, but IMHO if the behavioural evidence and IP coincide… --user talk:Wim b 16:55, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is plausible that is the same person whit different IPs (1 Romania and 1 USA) and browser. --Wim b 16:53, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Did you check if those IP addresses are open proxies or TOR nodes. Jehochman Talk 15:02, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sock[edit]

Hi, Horst Hof! Seems there is another one of those socks editing Italian IPA. I really don’t know where exactly I should report it, so I’m reaching out for your help. Thank you. 〜イヴァンスクルージ九十八[IvanScrooge98]会話 14:40, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@NinjaRobotPirate, Premeditated Chaos, and Maxim: we need help with some cross-wiki checkuser action. Where’s the best place to go? I can email more details. This is one of those very severe harassment cases. Jehochman Talk 14:50, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Stewards usually handle cross-wiki issues. One can request CU for wikis with no CheckUsers at m:Steward requests/Checkuser, but stewards generally won't handle requests on wikis that already have CheckUsers. There isn't an easy way to coordinate cross-wiki CheckUser issues. If you email WP:FUNC, info will make its way to the appropriate forum. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 15:42, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Let's remember to mention this when the RFC on Harassment gets started. We should have a tool that can coordinate enforcement of sanctions against a stalker moving from wiki to wiki to harass another user via sock puppet accounts. A global lock obviously won't work. Jehochman Talk 01:12, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
