Done, now that I've seen a proper source for the truth of the claim. But just so you're aware for future reference, nothing about our process required the original edit to be reverted by the original editor; you could have just moved the station back from the "defunct" to the "active" section of the template by yourself as well. Mass category changes[edit]

Why are you changing the categories on hundreds of biographies from "Ryerson University alumni" to "Toronto Metropolitan University alumni"? For example, this person attended the university in 2007, when it was called "Ryerson". Just because the name changed last year doesn't mean this person attended "Toronto Metropolitan University". This is inaccurate and not supported by the sources in each of these biographies. As an example, Egerton Ryerson was born in 1803 in Upper Canada. Why not change his place of birth to "Canada"? Because Canada didn't exist until 1867, so saying he was born in Canada would be incorrect, just as saying someone who attended "Toronto Metropolitan University" in 2007 is incorrect. Thank you. @Magnolia677: Because it's the same school and what is now TMU is reissuing degrees to alumni under the school's new name, on request. This is the school's fifth name since its inception. There aren't separate categories for each name the school has had over the years ie Ryerson Institute of Technology alumni, Ryerson Polytechnical Institute alumni, Ryerson Polytechnic University alumni, and Ryerson University alumni but one catch-all category with the explanation "This category lists individuals who are alumni of Toronto Metropolitan University (known until 2022 as Ryerson University). For continuity purposes, this category includes Toronto Metropolitan University graduates prior to its designation as an Ontario university in 1993 i.e. Ryerson Polytechnical Institute."

If you wish to create five separate categories, and do the research to determine which alum fits in which category you can but I think it would be overcomplicated, a lot of work, and unnecessary. Horatio Bumblebee (talk) 10:54, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What I want to do is get it right. Saying someone attended University X, when they actually attended University Y, is not correct. The categories should have been maintained, but redirected. @Magnolia677: I don't understand why you made this change [1]- Toronto Metropolitan University exists now. Maple Leaf Gardens is owned by TMU and is its athletic facility. Why would you change its category from Category:Toronto Metropolitan University buildings when clearly it is a TMU building? There may be an argument for putting a decomissioned or demolished building under Category:Ryerson University buildings instead of TMU buildings if it was only part of the campus prior to 2022 but not a building that is now part of TMU's campus. @Magnolia677: As for your example of Egerton Ryerson's birthplace - that's because Canada was only created in 1867 when the provinces of Canada East, Canada West , New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia federated to create a new political entity called Canada. What year was Toronto Metropolitan University founded? You will not find any record that says it was founded in 2022. It was founded in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology and has subsequently changed its name four times but, legally, is still the same institution and the same corporate entity.
