Bacon, bullets and Buruli[edit]

I just finished reading through all that armament stuff, and after a particularly rough start to my editing day, am taking a break to share my bacon, bullets and Buruli stories with you. Be prepared!

So, many eons ago, when dear hubby was still in the so-called "trying to impress me phase" of courtship (they really should keep it up), we were driving through the country and suddenly I exclaimed, "Ew, WHAT is that SMELL?" He says, "Let me introduce you to my friend", and makes a quick turn into what was once a golf course, bankrupted, converted now to hog barns and a fishing hole belonging to his buddy. Ah, the lovely smell of hog barns when the wind and humidity are just right. So, as he goes around to open the car door for me (really, men should keep that up, why do they stop?), he suddenly (catches on quick) notices the four-inch-heels on my alligator slides acquired in Caracas, along with the silk and cashmere blouse, and stammers ... "uh, you're going to need some more practical shoes". Almost lost me at that point, because what is the point of life in practical shoes, I ask ?

Fast forward, and we're moving to our home together. I'm packing, and call him at the office to ask what I am supposed to do with all these bullets. (Yes, there is a connection here to armament.) He asks, "what bullets?" Says he doesn't have any bullets. I say they are everywhere, here and there, scattered about the basement, kitchen, family room. He insists he owns no bullets. I say, you know, those red things that are about three inches long and have like a gold cap. He replies, "Oh, you mean shells!" Right. Whatever. Same stuff; it goes boom when you put it in a gun.

Fast forward more years, and we are at the aforementioned ex-golf course turned hog barn/fishing hole, for some sort of shooting exercise. I seem to remember clay pigeons, but I could be wrong, because I learned there are many different kinds of things to shoot at ... trap, skeet, pigeons, whatever ... stuff you shoot. So they gave me a gun, pulled the thingie, and I pointed, closed my eyes and fired. The place erupted in cheers! I opened my eyes and said, "What?" They said, " You dusted it!" My first shot ever. (And my last.) I had to ask what that meant. After they explained, well, that's cool, because I had my eyes closed and never even saw it. Have never fired a gun again, because why not quit when you're batting 1.000 ?!?!!?

So, all of that is a long way to say just as I can review all the different kinds of topics I read at FAC, FAR and PR, and try to provide some sort of review, I am pretty darn sick of hearing from all of those who can't be arsed to return the favor when a medical article needs review. 'Tis no wonder it is near impossible to convince medical editors to go for FAC, after they do all that work and are then ignored. SandyGeorgia, "really, men should keep that up, why do they stop?" Well, my brother once chided his wife "You shouldn't eat all of that chocolate, you'll get fat." Without pausing she snapped back "It doesn't matter. I'm already married." And reduced the room to gales of laughter.
Bullets. Well now, bullets are the bits on the end of shells that don't go boom. I suspect that you know this.
Medical articles. No problem. It was straight forward. Let me know when the next one comes up. I suspect that HF may be of the same opinion. And Ajpolino should feel entirely free to give Battle of the Saw a prose review for jargon, assumptions, recherche language and generally everything which may not be comprehensible to non-aficionados. Lack of any military knowledge not so much an advantage as a necessity. I am sure that HF will have another FAC along before too long where a similar approach would be welcome. I have always had the philosophy that the way to solve the chocolate dilemma is to forego protein and vegetables (make every calorie count)! So far, it's working for me, but I understand it may catch up to me someday :) I do understand a bit more about bacon and bullets now! Hey Hog Farm. I don't think we've interacted before, so hi :) I just wanted to drop you a note about your RfA. At my recent RfA, I got curious about the pace votes were coming in due to a comment someone made on the RfA's talk page. I did some comparisons against recent RfAs, and found my RfA was tacking rather fast compared to most of the recent RfAs. I don't want to jinx anything, but your RfA is currently tracking twice as fast as mine did. Looks to be off to a very good start! I haven't !voted, in part because I don't usually comment on RfAs, and in part because so far as I am aware we haven't interacted before. But, I may if I can find some time to do a review.     • Thanks for adding {{Skip to bottom}} - it was getting pretty long. I didn't know that template existed. It's getting to the point where I need to archive, but I'm going to wait until after the RFA closes, as I think that suddenly archiving your talk page right before your RFA can make it look like you're hiding something. The tricky thing I'm learning with answering RFA questions is that if you're not careful, there's a high risk of editing out someone else's comments/questions, so I know now I need to check the diff of my answer to make sure I didn't accidentally remove anything.       • When my RfA was running, I would craft answers to new questions in a separate editing window. When I was ready with the answer, I would open a new editing window, and copy/paste the answer into the appropriate question slot and quickly save it. I'm using the multiple tabs thing, as well. A weird thing for me is that I've always been a better extemporaneous speaker than a planned one, so the sort of unplanned nature of RFA questions actually helps me a little. The big struggle is that some of these further back incidents I don't have much memory of, as my memory's never been the same since taking a concussion in a high school baseball game.   • I had a friend who suffered a fall off of a storage shed on his property. He suffered a concussion as well. His memory was somewhat affected, as was his personality to some degree, but the bigger impact for him was his sudden inability to do basic math. The brain is a strange things sometimes. By the way, your signature promised me bacon if I came to your talk page. I don't see any bacon here. Well, time wise you're about 4 hours short of the half way mark now on your RfA. You've just crossed 150 supports. In the last 14 months, across 27 successful RfAs, there's been only 4 RfAs that have gotten to 150 supports faster than your RfA. You're still on a blistering pace. I know there's lots of questions, and concerns raised about the quotas, but hang in there. Barring presentation of something really damning in your editing history, you're past the hump now. URFA note[edit]

You really didn't have to do that :) The queries I had are insignificant in the big picture; we would not be bringing that article to FAR over that. And, if you leave your "Satisfactory", and I leave my "Notes", I will be the one eventually removing the note when the issues are addressed (that is, in this case, we have three actively involved editors, so I'm sure they will answer). Also, we aren't after perfection; it's OK if not everything is fixed, and important to pace ourselves (meaning, at Invasion of Tulagi (May 1942), I'm OK with leaving a note and moving on-- if we try to fix every little thing, risk of burnout). The reason I leave the Note is just a reminder to self to check in after a month or so, so I don't have to watchlist every article I review. I hope my "finding something" didn't feel like a "gotcha"! The article Ludington, Michigan has recently had non-notable people added to it. It needs semi-protection and I requested that, but apparently not the correct way. Congratulations! As I mentioned in my support on your RfA, it is heartening to see a nominee who started editing within the last two years. We've had a very hard time attracting qualified candidates who have been here less than five years. On the flip side of that; you edit on average a thousand times+ a month. Be careful not to burn out. It's easy to get too absorbed in this project. With the new buttons available to you, you might find that it's even more tempting to get too absorbed. When I became an admin, WereSpielChequers pointed me to a script that dramatically eases conducting blocks. It can be added to your monobook.js, as I did it to mine with this edit. It changes the "block" tab you now have on editor's user/usertalk pages and gives a useful drop down of potential block reasons. Clicking on one does all the blocking and notification for you. Of note; your RfA finalized in the top 40 of the most supported RfAs of all time. This places it in the top 2% of all RfAs. I like to think of adminship as the former job I had where my boss would hand me tools and expect me to fix a broken industrial-sized dishwasher. Once I became a manager, I got access to more tools. It made fixing the dishwasher easier, but it also meant I had to be more careful to avoiding damaging things, and I also had more responsibility. When I first started, I was only given a fork, but I eventually got a hammer, screwdriver, and utility knife. More tools to do maintenance with, but more care is needed. As an aside, I pity whoever replaced me as dishwasher fixer after I left that job for a better one. Hog Farm Talk 17:41, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

        • Just wanted to echo the above, congratulations and thank you for volunteering to help out the encyclopaedia even more than you already do. I hope it wasn't too stressful for you, but I can understand if you felt it was a little confronting. My own RfA was not a good time for me -- not really due to the process itself, though -- but during the middle of it I had a particularly difficult situation at work involving the accidental death of someone close to me, which made the whole thing worse than it should have been. Congratulations, Hog Farm! I don't know how I missed your RfA but I was looking at some articles you PROD'd, moved my cursor over your username and saw you were now an admin!

My only advice is now, and in the future, never think twice about asking another admin for a second opinion. None of us are experienced in all areas of the project and most admins have "a beat" of sorts, areas of the project that they frequently deal with. The best admins know what they are good at and what areas they have less knowledge about and they don't hesitate to call on another admin who is more well-versed in that area of the project. Iroquois, New York?[edit]

First, a belated congrats on your RfA! You're a great addition to the admin corps.

Second, I wondered if I could benefit from your geographical expertise in tracking down a possible place in upstate New York called Iroquois, New York. It would be near the Buffalo Creek Reservation or Cattaraugus Reservation, so probably in Erie County, New York.

I came across a reference to it while researching Laura Maria Sheldon Wright; she ostensibly died there (see this encyclopedia entry, among others). There's also a reference to it on page 28 of this PDF. @AleatoryPonderings: Here's the basic USGS file for it. It along doesn't mean much alone, but I can track down the coordinates of it site from there. According to the topographic maps, it is in southern Erie County near the county line and slightly to the north of Versailles, New York. On the 1905 and 1907 topographic maps, it is shown as a cluster of homes at a crossroads with two churches; there is an Indian school nearby to the west. By 1944, most of the homes and one of the churches are gone, and the school is revealed to be the Thomas Indian School. What is there is pretty stable from 1944 to 1960, which is the last small-scale topo until 2010, and the 2010 and later ones do not show individual buildings. It was viewed as enough of a separate community in 1921 to be stated as the community where the Thomas Indian School was. This has the phrasing "Iroquois (Thomas Indian School)" This calls it the post office for the school. This also mentions the school's post office. It's hard to find good results because of noise for an Iroquois hotel and an Iroquois pipline company, but from what I can determine, it appears to have been a site in southern Erie county that had a post office and was affiliated with the Thomas Indian School. I wouldn't consider this to be usable as a source, but it's a fairly decent site and says the Iroquois post office was open from 1898 to 1956. Hog Farm Talk 04:44, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your work with tagging all of these unincorporated "former settlements" and the like. From what I've seen, there are just 3 or 4 admins who regularly go through the day's expiring PRODs and there have been so many of these nonnotable places in California, Virginia and the like that have been tagged over the past few weeks (hundreds?), I don't think you need to write lengthy explanations. Bummer. When I had my first concussion (snow skiing accident 20 years ago, where a green skiier blindsided me bad and knocked me into a frozen bank), it took me about six months to be normal. I think I slept something like 15-18 hours a day for the first two days after it. I was back to work today with no ill effects, and I'm on track to get back to full participation in classes when they resume Monday. Spent the last two days doing accounting homework I got behind on.
