What does "Per ACR" mean? BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 02:18, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article 8th Missouri Infantry Regiment (Confederate) you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. A barnstar for you![edit]

The Original Barnstar
Great job on SweeTango/GA2. I will be working for the next couple of months on the great article improvements you have suggested. I am interested in getting this to GA standards and your inspirations are great. I know I can make it a Good Article as long as I can follow your high quality practical ideas for improvements. Keep up the good work. See you around. Doug Coldwell (talk) 15:51, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations[edit]

The Featured Article Medal
By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this special, very exclusive award created just for we few, we happy few, this band of brothers, who have shed sweat, tears, and probably blood, in order to be able to proudly claim "I too have taken an article to Featured status". Gog the Mild (talk) 16:19, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

An apple pie for you![edit]

Great tweaks on the SweeTango article. Thanks for your support, I appreciate it. I have put in for GAN and now I will just wait patiently until another reviewer comes by. Doug Coldwell (talk) 19:47, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Doug Coldwell: - Many thanks. I'm willing to help with the GANR too; if you want any help, just ping me over to the review once it's opened, and I'll see if I can help. Hog Farm Bacon 19:49, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Nvm, I think I screwed up the counter"[edit]

Re this: See Help:List#Common mistakes. The way to do this looks like

  1. your original oppose ~~~~
    your added statement ~~~~
  2. GeneralNotability's oppose

Or you could do it all in one line with {{pb}} like I did -

  1. your original oppose ~~~~
    your added statement ~~~~
  2. GeneralNotability's oppose

More detail, sort of, at WP:Colons and asterisks. Though that's about mixing * and : rather than # and :, exactly the same concept applies. —Cryptic 02:59, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Cryptic: Thanks for explaining how that works. Makes me wonder if I should be commenting on RFA if I can't make a list yet. Hog Farm Bacon 11:39, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

FYI - I just did a major copy edit to upgrade this article (hopefully) to Good Article status. It failed a short time ago and now I have made these improvements. If I can't find anything further to improve in the next couple of days, I plan on renominating GAN.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:26, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Contgratulations[edit]

Congratulations on the promotion of First Battle of Newtonia. I had planned to post my review comments to it, but when I went to do so the article had already been promoted. In any event, you might wish to add a comma after Missouri?

The First Battle of Newtonia was fought on September 30, 1862, between Cederate soldiers commanded by Colonel Douglas H. Cooper and a Union column commanded by Brigadier General Frederick Salomon near Newtonia, Missouri during the American Civil War. Regards - Pendright (talk) 01:48, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Pendright: - Thanks for catching that. Yes, the geographic comma needs to be there, I'll add it promptly. Hog Farm Bacon 01:52, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to rename more categories?[edit]

Do you know how to rename more categories on Wikipedia? If you do, please teach me how to rename more categories. Thanks. St3095 (?) 08:29, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@St3095: Pretty much, it's going to go through WP:CFD. If it's something uncontroversial, like fixing a typo or aligning with a name change in the parent article, list it at the "Speedy renaming and mergers" section of the CFD page, and someone who's able to suppress the page move redirect will move it if it's truly uncontroversial. Otherwise, it should go through the regular CFD function. Do you have Twinkle enabled? If so, it's really easy to go through the regular CFD part. Hog Farm Bacon 15:10, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hog Farm: My twinkle is disabled. St3095 (?) 15:13, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@St3095: There's manual instructions at WP:CFD#HOWTO, but they're a touch complex. Is there a particular one you have in mind? I might be able to do a procedural nomination for you. Hog Farm Bacon 15:19, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hog Farm: I have already request to rename two categories earlier today. Click here to look. St3095 (?) 15:30, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2020 September newsletter[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • Free Hong Kong Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
  • IndonesiaHaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
  • England Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.

Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Deprods[edit]

Hi Hog Farm, I've seen a few of your AfD nominations that express disappointment with Andrew Davidson deprodding nominated articles without giving any explanation. I understand your frustration there; it's more helpful if the deprodder posts sources. But I am finding sources for some of these pinball articles, which indicates that they may need more attention than a Prod. It might be easier just to take pop culture articles straight to AfD, rather than do the Prod, see it get deprodded, sigh, and then post a frustrated AfD nomination. WP:PROD is supposed to be used for uncontroversial deletions, so if you see that a topic area is not uncontroversial, then it's possible that Prod isn't the right tool for the job. Just a suggestion, I hope you're having a nice day. — Toughpigs (talk) 21:29, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Toughpigs: - I'm also thinking I should shy away from nominating these pinball articles for deletion for awhile. I've got a fairly decent AFD record [1], but my miss rate on these pinball articles has been a lot higher than I feel comfortable with. Obviously, I'm not familiar enough with where to be finding the sources to be able to declare if the pinball articles really aren't notable or not. And an AFD nom that's missing something can be negative: I've seen a lot of AFDs collect quick kneejerk delete !votes when it probably shouldn't. I had a similar case earlier where I was missing on a few music-related AFDs, so I took a few months off nominating them until I became a lot more experienced with finding sources. I think the same principle applies to the pinball articles. I'm having second thoughts about my ability to find all relevant sources, so I should shy away from nominating them until I'm a little better at finding the sources. Hog Farm Bacon 02:05, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's a good idea. Like you say, there's a risk that notable articles get deleted just because people aren't sure where to find the sources. I'm glad you're being thoughtful about it; thanks for your response. — Toughpigs (talk) 02:16, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think the trick for the pinballs, and perhaps other topics, is to check the Internet Archive. But hmmm, there still seem to be many problematic ones. I just PRODed No Good Gofers for which I see zero sources (let's see if it gets dePRODed, and then what happens at an AfD), and I started a discussion at Talk:Laser War which has some but I think not good enough. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:00, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

18th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment[edit]

@Hog Farm: - Thank you for reviewing 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment. It can be hard to find people to review articles with its length. It had a very thorough Peer Review, so hopefully it is now easier to evaluate. You have written lots of military GAs, so perhaps I can learn a few things. Your recent GEOLAND noms …[edit]

… have given me a good chuckle. Have you been looking for the (pseudo-)places with the most ridiculous names, or is that just coincidence? AleatoryPonderings (talk) 02:26, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • I've been trying to go with the more ridiculous names, as they're easier to perform WP:BEFOREs on, as there's fewer false positives. Rock, Missouri was almost impossible to look for though, just because of how completely generic that town name is. Hog Farm Bacon 02:30, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • Ah, smart! I didn't think about the searchability. In any event, thanks for bringing some much-needed levity to AfD of late :) AleatoryPonderings (talk) 02:32, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just tweaked the Rock, Missouri article, it was a bit problematic as it doesn't seem to appear on the USGS maps of the area. A note though regarding these old country store/communities: back in 1984 I taught school at a rural school about 30 miles from my home. Along the road there were five or six of these old stores and I would stop for gas or coffee at various ones along the way. Well, the last time I drove that road - couple years ago - only one of those old stores was still in service. Kinda sad in a way ... we sometimes lose a bit with our "progress". Anyway, roll on ... :) Vsmith (talk) 15:31, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is Truxno, Louisiana notable? I have no idea how to do these searches, but the statement that "its population is unknown" raises a real red flag …… AleatoryPonderings (talk) 21:29, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@AleatoryPonderings: - I'm not quite for sure. The claim that it is located within Marion is rather suspect, as both Google Maps and the topographic maps show Truxno well outside of Marion's limits. The New York Times called it a "onestore village" in 1979 [2], but it's not 100% clear if that means the village had one store, or if the village was just one store. The topos do show some buildings there. An old Louisiana Public Service Commission report calls it "Truxno Community". There's two GNIS entries: one the usual vague "populated place", and one calling it an old post office. This news piece calls it a hamlet. This calls it a town. It's borderline, but it might be able to scrape by WP:GEOLAND. Hog Farm Bacon 22:05, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, ok! Thanks for looking into it :) AleatoryPonderings (talk) 22:08, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 02:21, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Confederate Memorial State Historic Site[edit]

On 24 September 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Confederate Memorial State Historic Site, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a chapel at the Confederate Memorial State Historic Site was formerly used for both religious services and the production of alcohol? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Confederate Memorial State Historic Site. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Confederate Memorial State Historic Site), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Source review[edit]

Hi Hog Farm, thanks so much for your source review of the 1988 final, Harrias and I very much appreciate it. I was wondering if you would be kind enough to take a look at the 1993 final article too? Every little helps. Cheers. And let me know if there's anything I can help you out with review-wise. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 20:08, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @The Rambling Man: - Right now I've got a WP:MILHIST/ACR review that I've committed to next that's a little longish (55kb readable prose), but once I get through that one, I'll give the 1993 one a look if nobody hasn't snagged it first. If you'd really like to take a look at an article, I've got one open at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Landis' Missouri Battery/archive1 that needs someone outside of the military history project to take a look. If that's not your subject matter, though, I get that. FAC's been pretty sluggish lately, so I've been knocking out several reviews lately. Hog Farm Bacon
Certainly, there's no rush on the 1993 article, my hopes at WikiCup ended about two weeks ago so this is just for my personal pleasure, take your time. I'll happily add your FAC to my list. Cheers, and thanks again for your review. The Rambling Man (Hands! Face! Space!!!!) 20:57, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I half-expected to see that you had written this DYK, as it seems right up your alley … Hope all is well. AleatoryPonderings (talk) 23:59, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Second Battle of Newtonia Site you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Discord[edit]

Hi Hog Farm, I hope you are well! I've noticed your stellar contributions lately, keep up the hard work (I also saw you've done 200 GARs in a year... Which is crazy!)

I'm not sure if you are interested at all, but there is a discord group for Wikipedians that you may or may not be interested in. I frequent it a lot and I think you'd fit in well if it suited you. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 20:52, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Lee Vilenski: - Thanks for the encouragement. I don't do discord though, as I've found Wikipedia burns enough of my time on its own, and since I have to be online quite a bit for school, the temptation to keep a million random tabs open on my browser generally leads to decreased productivity. Thanks, though. Hog Farm Bacon 21:07, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
