Questioning my edit on Franz Liszt

Hi there. I try to do my part with Wikipedia editing once in a blue moon, and rarely have I been successful, as the super arcane rules of Wikipedia editing defy me. I get it: there are lots of rules the make the whole thing work for those dedicated enough to penetrate them, but they are quite opaque to an outsider of the community of hardcore editors. Case in point, I'd like to politely challenge the revision you made to my entry on Franz Liszt, but it's far from clear where I should leave such a comment. So I just post this here, figuring you'll see it.

Anyway, my edit, as you observed, was to tag Liszt with the category of Hungarian Composers. You seem to feel that's not necessary. But, your having deleted that link I made, Liszt doesn't show up on the overall category of Hungarian composers: Category: Hungarian composers

Why does that category page even exist if you're not going to have Liszt show up there, who is among Hungary's top five most famous composers. His omission from that page is conspicuous. If he doesn't belong on that page, I'd posit that page doesn't belong on Wikipedia.

Hi Rickbruner! Writing here is fine, or if you need information not necessarily from a particular editor, just use the article's talk page. My edit occurred because the sub-category of "Hungarian Composers", "Hungarian Classical Composers", already existed for Liszt. We try to put people in the most refined category that exists in the categorical organizational tree. There is no need to include the parent category also. Most of the categories are themselves a sub-category of another, often many layers thick. These can change sometimes too—if, for instance, someone creates the category "Hungarian Classical Composers who teach"—the current category would be replaced with it (in the case of Liszt). Mormon Article

Prior to my edit, the article stated that President Woodruff "officially terminated" the practice of polygamy. That is not true, as a mere inspection of Official Declaration No. 1 makes clear. He prohibited polygamy only if it was "forbidden by the law of land." I put that language in quotation marks because it is taken directly from the text of Official Declaration No. 1. Including that language is necessary to avoid giving a misleading summary of Official Declaration No. 1. It also demonstrates that the Mormons have no moral objection to polygamy and ceased endorsing it merely to avoid the imprisonment of their leaders and the confiscation of their property by the federal government. I know that modern-day Mormons are embarrassed by their history as a polygamous cult, but facts are facts, and it is not appropriate to say that Official Declaration No. 1 "terminated" polygamy when it did not.John Paul Parks (talk) 15:17, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

The fact that they are an IP is absolutely irrelevant. IPs are free to remove messages from their talk page (with few exceptions), just like any other account (see WP:REMOVED). It's a shared IP, there's a difference. Or should be. I acted through common sense, something sometimes lacking around here. This type of gaming the system by vandals is actually being discussed now at The Village Pump. I see the arguments for and against presented there, and, judging by the consensus, I guess I will allow such perpetrators to have it "their way" in the future, and leave it to others to tie those vandals and their disruption down. "Vandal Only" accounts such as the one you are using, have little traction here, and carry zero weight (per wp:IAR). If you choose to become a helpful editor, that will change, and I can and am willing to help you with that. If you choose to continue trying to game the system by removing warnings to avoid blocking, however, then I'm afraid you will be sorely disappointed here. It's up to you. Ahmed Abou Hashima

Thank-you for the notice on my TP. I actually spent some time in RS pages looking-for some guidance about what would be considered RS for Egypt in the English-language or otherwise. The current article is not good to say the least, and I found it while browsing old article maintenance categories.

When I made that edit to the lede, there was no where else to put it yet, and the int link to his ex-wife's article was the most RS I could find. Any advice that you could give pointing to RS for Egypt area, would be a great help with this article, as I was mainly concerned against using celebrity gossip sites and blogs because there was some history for this guy, but I'm leery of the sources. Also- someone used youtube in another language as an article ref for the bloviated and article-killer "charity works section. Montgomery C. Meigs Infobox deletion

From where did you get the unique construct "Not everything belongs in an Infobox: third and fourth generation descendants included."? The descriptor for the inclusion of Relatives in an Infobox is "Names of siblings or other relatives; include only if independently notable or particularly relevant.". The so-called 4th gen relative was commanding General of the U.S. Army in Europe, a Professor and Graduate of West Point and has his own WP entry. The third generation, his father, is suffering from some disambiguation exigencies at the moment, but is notable in his own right, and will have that issue sorted out once we resolve how to disambiguate 4 relatives with the same name. I have added Monty's other son, John Rodgers Meigs who was every bit as notable as his sibling Montgomery C. Meigs, Jr. who is listed in the Infobox. The proposed additions were all career military commissioned officers as was Montgomery C. Meigs (2 of whom died in the service to their country, and one of which was buried in Arlington National Cemetary that his father created). Because not everything does belong in an infobox, especially descendants that had no influence on the article subject at all.
First off: Infoboxes are designed as a summary of Key Information of an article; and their templates contain many fields to cover the many diverse articles into which they may be placed. That said, however, a field may be key information for the subject of one article as opposed to another — ALL the fields are not, and should not, be filled in for ALL the articles. Note: The very fact that an article should even warrant an infobox is not standard in Wikipedia.
Secondly: the inclusion of far-descendants of an individual in an infobox (or even an article) amounts to adding mere trivia. This is because the article's subject, in most cases, has no knowledge of such individuals and their later existence has no impact/influence on the subjects' lives (although the reverse is possibly true, as the life of an ancestor can influence and inspire descendants). Wikipedia is not a genealogy site. Less distant descendants (children, grandchildren) are fine for the same reason.
How you reliably source the inclusion of just a mention of these descendants in the article is itself problematical. But raising the existence of these descendants to Key Information is a stretch. Even Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy only talks of ancestor table inclusions and not descendants.

June 2016 Guild of Copy Editors Newsletter

Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes!

May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography.

Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. Voting takes place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. If you'd like to assist behind the scenes, please consider stepping forward; self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged. There is more than one Maple Park Cemetery in Missouri. Finding Davis Tutt's grave in the cemetery which it's in took some time. Your deletion removed verifiable information from Wikipedia, which is a characteristic of vandalism. I can see that you're not going to revert your "correction," so how about putting the link in an External Links section as you suggested, or doing a <ref> ... </ref>? Regarding my efforts on the John Sevier article, all I was trying to do, was a translation of the Article to the Greek language with a view to make it available to Greek speaking people. Obviously, I was doing it all wrong, but vandalization would be a harsh word in my case. Anyway, I figured it out and I’ve started translating the Article in el.wikipedia.com. Coordinator elections: The second tranche of Guild coordinators for 2016, who will serve a six-month term until 23:59 UTC on 31 December, have been elected. Hi, @JackofOz:. There is. I should have been, however, clearer in my edit summary. "However" should never start a sentence when used in its conjuctive form. A fast and simple rule taken from Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style," states that you shouldn't start a sentence with "however" when you mean “nevertheless” or “but.” This is use as a conjuctive adverb, and should be avoided as the initial word in a sentence (although some recent grammar tomes seem to be relaxing that prohibition). If article is not overlinked, then why does Cleanup message with specific note about overlinking appear at the top of the page? Does this message need to be edited/removed? I`m the fist to admit I know nothing about editing an article here or wish to do it..I have tried on several occasions to allow information about what is probably the only valid research being done regarding this topic at least into the talk section which is constantly deleted namely the research being done regarding the possibility that the colony relocated across what was then a section of swamp to high ground...artifacts have been found there...if anyone who is suppressing this would bother to read the information they would learn the Lost Colony Center for Research is a non profit...i have nothing to do with them or the literature which has been produced. Spoetzl Brewery page

Per your message below, I changed your reference on the Spoetzl Brewery page because it is inaccurate, just as it is in the source you cite, the Official Texas Handbook. The original beer from the Shiner Brewing Association was not a Lenten beer, but a German-style Pilsner, brewed year round. The "Lenten" reference refers to Shiner Bock, which was not produced until 1913. Technically it was a seasonal beer, not specifically a Lenten beer, but that is splitting hairs and, while not entirely accurate, isn't inaccurate either. Traditionally German Bock beers were only brewed in spring, around Lent, and that has become a very common perception. but in fact, Shiner Bock is more accurately classified an American Dark Lager than a true Bock, according to many sources including the Brewers Association (http://shiner.com/shiner_news/index.php?p=43, http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style04.php http://www.beertutor.com/styles/lager_styles.shtml).

Regarding the specific line in question, I'm likely the most reliable source you need - I work for the brewery and have for many years. But I know that probably isn't sufficient, so you can also refer to Shine On (the official history of the brewery (written by Mike Renfro, Bright Sky Press, 2008. Specific references about the original Shiner brew, called "Premium" and also "Texas Special" can be found on pages 18, 36 and 38. References to Shiner Bock coming along after the brewery had been around a few years - and so not the "original" beer, can also be found in the book as well as many other sources (http://www.beerinfo.com/index.php/pages/ShinerBock.html, http://www.texasbreweries.com/shiner.htm, http://www.wideopencountry.com/18-things-about-shiner-beer/).

Since this involves deleting information, rather than adding it, it isn't clear how a citation would work.

July Drive: The July drive was a roaring success. We set out to remove April, May, and June 2015 from our backlog (our 149 oldest articles), and by 23 July, we were done with those months. We added July 2015 (66 articles) and copy-edited 37 of those. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from June 2016. Well done! Overall, we recorded copy edits to 240 articles by 20 editors, reducing our total backlog to 13 months and 1,656 articles, the second-lowest month-end total ever.

August Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 21 through 27 August; the theme was sports-related articles in honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Of the eight editors who signed up, five editors removed 11 articles from the backlog. A quiet blitz – everyone must be on vacation. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

In answer to your question: While the word "Tavernier" appears a number of times in the article, (although I did not count thirty-three), many of these refer to Jean-Baptiste. There is a link to "Tavernier Blue" in the "India" section, and a second in the "Smithsonian" section under the phrase "French Blue". There are also links to "walnut", "Associated Press", and "earth" but they do not appear to have as direct a connection with the stone in question. That is why "Tavernier Blue" was added to See Also. It was a rhetorical question, @Mannanan51:. You are correct, the 33 occurrences of the word, Tavernier, was the wrong search term. Tavernier Blue, however, is in the article seven times, and one or two of those are already links. Per the Manual of Style, a "see also" link at that point is to be avoided. Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful!

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating!

September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words).

October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page.

Housekeeping note: we do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your Watchlist.

After I and some other users have cleaned up the page I've removed most of your tags, but {{inline}} is one that always trips me up because it's not really clear what the tagger is asking for, or any standards as to how many inline tags is enough. I think the article is reasonably well referenced now and has inline refs exclusively, so I wonder if you'd take another look and clear the tag if you think the issue is resolved. Cheers. Please do not make changes to President of the United States articles without there first being a discussion and a consensus to do so. I understand what you're saying, and you may be some-what, even mostly correct here; however, changing numerous article titles and scores of article links without consulting others is disruptive. There needs to be a general "articles-for-renaming" discussion and notice of that discussion needs to be put on each involved article's talk page. Have I missed such a conversation? If so, please point me to it, and please put links to it on the various article talk pages. I was simply correcting grammar. I have never had to ask for such permission before, from you or anyone here. It is simple copywriting. What you are saying is patent nonsense, and it is hardly disruptive, as I left behind redirects. A discussion on each and every article as you suggest, would indeed be disruptive, and in such a case is totally over-kill, non-necessary, and time wasting. Such grammar changes happen everyday, it's no big deal. Why would you change something that was obviously wrong, has been corrected, back to wrong? I don't get it. You are correct, you do not need to ask for permission, from me or anyone, before correcting grammar. However, when someone objects to an article name change, you, the one making the change, need to pause from making further article title changes to discuss the objection. I did some poking around, as I recalled seeing a discussion on one of the "List of PsOTUS by ..." talk pages several weeks back that touched upon the topic we're discussing, and found: Talk:Presidents of the United States and control of Congress#Requested move 23 November 2016. The move discussion covered several similarly titled pages, and a notice of the discussion was put on each potentially affected page about the discussion and inviting input. As multiple pages are potentially impacted here, I fail to see how opening a discussion on say the "Talk:List of Presidents of the United States" or "Talk:List of Presidents of the United States by Age" pages and stating on other talk pages something along the lines of:There is a move discussion in progress on [[]] which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. would be disruptive over-kill, even if the change is as obvious as you believe it to (and it in fact may) be. I was simply going about my wp:wikignome wp:copyedit method and correcting obvious errors (as I have (had) some free time), which were based on a current run through the articles linked to John Quincy Adams, as I was CORRECTING content in that article at the time. I was not not aware of any other discussions regarding this issue. I was simply correcting errors I noted in these linked articles.
I have limited time on Wikipedia the last year or so due to my work, and do not have time to ask permission to fix obvious grammar issues. To do so is not only illogical, but wasteful of my time. Please note: not every change has to be discussed around here. There is no discussion necessary in correcting grammar. (If this is erroneous thinking on my part, please add a link to the pertinent policy.) I do not understand why you are making the change to a letter from capital, to non-capital, such an issue. Proper English is proper English. Or do you have something that you think over-rides the Wikipedia Manual of Style and the Chicago Manual of Style. If you do, please provide a link to such.
I understand that if you are not competent in English grammar, the common error you have embraced in the written language can possibly be difficult for regular non-English users. It's difficult for EFL users too. In which case, I would think you would admit that you are possibly not correct in this situation, and self-revert those changes. Reversion of Historical Rankings of the Presidents of the United States.

I recently made an edit to fix the main chart on the Historical Rankings of the Presidents of the United States page. Specifically, I noticed that, if the chart is organized by the last column, it would show what looked to me to be a mess, with numbers repeated and randomly skipped over, not even organized in a way it would be organized if the different entries were tied, so I have no clue how these numbers were reached. To make the data look like it was not a mess, I added up the information in the first fourteen columns and then divided it by the number of columns that row had data for (as not all rows had fourteen data points) to get the average number. Then I organized the numbers into ascending order and labeled the results one through forty-three respectively. With this, I made the final column of the chart reflect the information on the rest of the chart.

Not long after I had made this edit, I received a message saying that the edit had been reverted by you, stating that my edit appeared non-constructive and might have been vandalism. I apologize if I did something wrong, but as stated above my only intention in the edit was making it so the data on the chart did not look seemingly meaningless and instead reflected the actual data. If my edit was reverted because the purpose of my edit seemed meaningless and was reverted out of caution, I apologize for not making my intentions clear with my edit, and if possible, now that you know my intentions for the edit, can you undue the reversion so that the chart can be reflect the fixes I made? If it was not that, but I edited it in the wrong way or some other mistake like that, I apologize, but ask that, if not you, then someone take a look at the chart and consider making adjustments to the last column. If necessary, I still have the math I ran pulled up on my computer and I can send it to you if necessary.

Again, sorry if I did something wrong, and thank you for your time.

I'll look at it again. I'm pretty sure those numbers are tied to the references, and as such are non-changeable, until new information is published somewhere. Also, the columns in the chart are sortable, so re-organizing them into a descending order is just a click away (hit the arrow heads in the column titles).
Please remember, making changes to numbers without an edit summary/explanation will get reverted rather quickly here, and should probably be discussed first on the article's talk page. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 19:04, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
I've been looking at that table too, and I've also been confused about that final "Freq of Pos" column. (And no, that column is not taken directly from the references, but rather is computed from the ratings in the references to serve as something similar to an average.) For several years there was an "Aggregate" column there instead, using Copeland's method, which seems reasonable to me, but then on Nov 28, 2016 Sleyece (talk) (who has since been blocked for edit warring) changed it to this "Freq of Pos" thing, which seems pretty absurd to me: it just shows the ranking that was given to each President by more surveys than any other ranking--which is a very unstable computation. E.g., if someone's rankings were 4, 4, 6, 9, 11, 12, then the "Freq of Pos" would be 4, but if two if their rankings were reduced so the rankings were 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 11, then the resulting "Freq of Pos" would be greatly increased from 4 to 11. Clearly not very useful as a summary value.
What 134.129.203.28 (talk) did looks like a good faith improvement to me: they changed it to simply rank the presidents in order of the averages of their ratings--pretty much the most obvious thing to do (although they neglected to also fix the column title to say "Average Rating" instead of "Freq of Pos".) I could see having a debate about whether this average rating is better or worse than the Copeland's method "Aggregate" that used to be there (and I suppose the correct intervention at this point would be to revert to those Copeland numbers rather than to the Average Rating numbers since they were what was there prior to the apparent vandalism by Seleyce), but in my opinion you were wrong to refer to the edits by 134.129.203.28 as "number trolling". The Copeland thing sounds better than the confusing mean ranking, as the latter is tending towards Synthesis. 34.129.203.28 was making a good faith edit, but failed to make any edit summary or explanation of what they were doing at the time. It appeared to be just someone screwing around with numbers, which happens here all too often. I do apologize for my comment regarding the number trolls.
