Username[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, FSMarketing, may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because it it represents an organization rather than an individual. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may file for a change of username, or you may simply create a new account and use that for editing. Thank you. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 19:21, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but it is considered inappropriate for such groups to use Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organization for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, please see how to appeal a block.

{{unblock-spamun|Franklin1|I see that I have been blocked on suspicion of using Wikipedia for promotional purposes, and it is believed that Franklin Street Marketing is not a notable company. Before deciding to create a Wikipedia page, I did research to see if posting a page about our agency would be a legitimate use of the website. On Wikipedia, I found a page for a direct competitor of ours: Neathawk Dubuque & Packett (ND&P). I noticed that their page had been up since 2006, and noted that it contained basic information about their agency. It is apparent, looking at the discussion page, that a representative of the agency authored the page, so I was under the impression this was OK, so long as the article itself was written in an impartial manner. When writing the Franklin Street Marketing article, I modeled the content after the ND&P article so as to stay within the limits of Wikipedia regulations. I do feel Franklin Street is a notable organization - the agency has served clients across the country for 24 years, has won numerous awards, and has been featured in several industry publications. Unfortunately, most of the agency's appearances in the press are not available on the publications' websites, so I did not make mention of them. Please advise on how to improve the Franklin Street Marketing page to meet Wikipedia standards. If I am unblocked, I would like to (if possible) get the Franklin Street Marketing page to meet Wikipedia standards, and I would contribute additional information to existing pages lacking complete information, such as Catholic Health Initiatives and Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. There are also large healthcare marketing publications that have no mention on Wikipedia, such as HealthLeaders Media, that I could contribute to.}}

Here's a few key questions:

You are currently blocked because your username appears directly related to a subject that you are trying to create an article about, contrary to the username policy. Changing the username will not allow you to break the 3 important questions above. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 20:46, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

{{unblock-spamun|SarahSimon|I was unaware that rules prevented user names related to the article subject. Again, as I went through creating the Franklin Street Marketing article, I followed the lead of Neathawk Dubuque & Packett (ND&P), whose author user name is Ndpagency. I understand that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and I feel the area of healthcare marketing is underrepresented. I understand the concept of a conflict of interest, but again, I was following ND&P's lead - since they have apparently met Wikipedia standards. I do not feel that Franklin Street Marketing is any less notable an organization than ND&P.}}

Your phrase, I feel the area of healthcare marketing is underrepresented, suggests that you may be trying to use Wikipeadia for marketing improvment, and that is unlikely to get an unblock. (NB. USer:Ndpagency is now blocked).  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:21, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It should also be noted that the ND&P agent account which created the initial ND&P article has been blocked in the same way that you have, and for the same reasons. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:21, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

When I said I feel the area of healthcare marketing is underrepresented I was talking about the industry, not the practice. I have no intention of promoting marketing services - just making the industry known. As I mentioned earlier, there are several hospital and health system pages lacking huge amounts of information, and national industry publications are not being represented at all. This would be no different than posting a page for the American Marketing Association, Advertising Age, or Ghg.—Preceding unsigned comment added by FSMarketing (talkcontribs)

Just to be very clear; your intent is to avoid the topic of Franklin Street Marketing? Kuru (talk) 15:46, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That was not my intent. But I do NOT intend to post material promoting the agency. I believe the article I posted was written impartially, and from the perspective of an individual, not the organization. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for making sure the article meets Wikipedia standards. What I meant was, in addition to posting the Franklin Street Marketing article, I would also contribute to other articles which are lacking content, and those that do not yet exist (i.e. Catholic Health Initiatives, HealthLeaders Media, Healthcare Strategy Institute, etc), that fall into my sphere of expertise. To stay within Wikipedia policy, my username could be changed to SarahSimon. (FSMarketing (talk) 16:42, 29 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Si – the new name is obviously fine, but we’re still not quite clear on the “can you take the urge to market out of the marketing professional”? It may not come as a great shock that we have a staggering number of people who come here solely to promote their own companies and services. I feel it is one of the biggest problems we have; well, that and way too many Pokémon articles. Would it be possible to convince you to avoid the topic of your company in the main encyclopedia for now, and we could work on a draft in your userspace? There’s also going to be significant notability issues, and I just don’t see any mentions outside of local media, but we could certainly explore it a bit. Sound like an acceptable approach? Kuru (talk) 18:57, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. As far as notability, Franklin Street Marketing has had national coverage in a handful of healthcare marketing publications. I have copies of them here - but none of these articles are posted online. Members of Franklin Street staff have also submitted articles and been quoted in articles that should run relatively soon, so there will be more coverage coming up in the near future. The agency has also brought in more "prestigious" awards than I mentioned, because there wasn't a way to link to them.

I will steer clear of Franklin Street Marketing for now - please feel free to work on a draft and if you are missing any information that would deem the article "notable", I would be glad to help locate references and supporting material. (FSMarketing (talk) 19:43, 29 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Okay, first step is to file for the name change as noted above, please do that before anything else. Please do not make changes to articles or add anything that is not clearly cited by reliable, third party references (newspapers, books, peer reviewed papers, etc) - anything that looks promotional and you will quickly wind up blocked again. Most of all, do not add anything about your employer. Kuru (talk) 21:32, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

Allowing username change to SarahSimon (talk · contribs). Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking.

Request handled by: Kuru (talk)

Unblocking administrator: Please check for active autoblocks on this user after accepting the unblock request.
