Michael Hampe

Hi there. I saw your comments at User talk:Monna Ry. I just wanted to point out that two offline reference works are listed as sources in addition to the one source cited in inline citations. That makes it three sources, and not one source. I’m not sure moving it into draft space is the best solution as it looks like this editor may not be active and it’s only likely to languish outside of main space. I suggest appealing to WP:WikiProject Opera (which has many dedicated editors, including German language speakers who edit in the English wiki) to work on sourcing the content appropriately. That probably will lead to better results. Best.4meter4 (talk) 09:04, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi @4meter4: thanks for your comments. Yes, more sources seem to have been added since I saw it, which is good (well, better — one could argue three still isn't great, but okay). However, while that may establish notability, it doesn't change the fact that several paragraphs, indeed entire sections, are complete unsupported by footnote or other citations, so it's impossible to know where the contents come from, whether from published source or the creating editor's OR. (The one source that was there when I looked at it didn't support nearly all of it, from what I could see at least.) Thanks, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 09:43, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

Victoria Howard

This is my first wikipedia article I haver ever written. Even though I have done all the training, I still don't quite understand how wikipedia works and what is and isn't copyright. My instructor told me that I didn't have to use my own words and I could add footnotes at the end of each sentence. He told me "the more footnotes the better". I thought I was doing good and was following the rules. There were only two articles about Victoria Howard and from the two I read, they said the same thing. I tried to add a photo so that people could see an image of Victoria but I have gotten a response from a wikipedia editor saying that the image didn't have a license on it. I don't understand how to put images on your website. If there is a way you can help me, I would really appreciate it. Thank you, -- KassidyDiLauro (talk) 05:53, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi @KassidyDiLauro: thanks for your comment. I had to remind myself what this refers to, but it's the article on Victoria Howard which I had marked as copy violation, right? Just to explain, I wasn't trying to be mean or officious, it's just that copyright is a legal matter, and we obviously have to make sure we comply, hence why I had to request deletion. Sorry it had to be your first one. :)
So, in simple terms, the way it works (and this is me explaining it as just another editor, not a policy maker or copyright expert) is that you should write your article in your own words; not closely paraphrasing the source, and certainly not simply copy & pasting it.
One exception to the last point is that you may be able to quote directly a small section here or there, but these must then be clearly shown as quotes. How much, exactly, you're allowed to quote isn't very clear (at least not to me!), but I would say the less the safer, and such direct quotes should be a special case rather than the norm.
Another exception is where the source you're using expressly states that the content can be reused, but then you must make it clear that this is the case and that you've copypasted on the basis of such licence given. (This is rare, and I'm only bringing it up because I mentioned it as one possibility in my edit note when requesting the deletion, so I just wanted to close that particular loop.)
As for referencing, every material statement you make when writing the article should be supported by a footnote citation (or other style, but I personally prefer footnote citations), referencing the source supporting that statement specifically, so that others can see where you got the information from and can verify it if need be. Even if you only have a couple of sources, you could easily end up with dozens of citations of them. I know that seems silly, it's tempting to just cite once, as if to say that "the whole article is supported by this source", but that's really not enough, other than in a very short 'stub' article (we're talking literally a single paragraph here). IMO, it's better to 'over-cite' than 'under-cite', although if you do make multiple citations to the same source, it's best to use a named reference so that the references list doesn't grow too long.
If there's anything I can assist you with at any time, feel free to ask (and if you're asking anywhere other than here on my talk page, please make sure you ping me — see Template:Reply to — so I get alerted). Hope this helps in some small way, :) --DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:00, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
Thank you Michael, I appreciate all of this information you have given me. It is more clear to me on how to write this article. Again thank you and I will contact you if I need help. --KassidyDiLauro (User talk:KassidyDiLauro) 11:06A.M, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
No problem @KassidyDiLauro: happy to help. Although I should point out my name is not Michael (not on Wikipedia; not in real life). :) Best, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 18:13, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello @DoubleGrazing, When you have the chance, will you take a look at my sand box to see if I need to fix anything before I try to publish my work on Wikipedia? I used my own words and I have referenced and footnoted all of my work. I don't want to publish this article and then have it taken down again. I would really appreciate it. I hope you have a good night. --User:KassidyDiLauro 10:45 P.M., March 2021 — Preceding undated comment added 05:54, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
@KassidyDiLauro: sure thing, I've left some comments on your sandbox talk page (feel free to delete them when you're done). --DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:03, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for all of this help you have given me. I really appreciate that you have given your time to help me. I have published the article and I feel confident about the article that I have now written. I hope you have good evening and again thank you. --User:KassidyDiLauro/KassidyDiLauro (User talk:KassidyDiLauro/talk) 05:47, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

List of works by Quentin Skinner

Dear DoubleGrazing, as you may have noticed, I have now done some work to remove the less relevant bibliographic items from Quentin Skinner and moved them to the new created List of works by Quentin Skinner. The latter is no longer a duplicate of the former. The List of works by Quentin Skinner is the first Wikipedia page I have ever helped to write, and so I wanted to make sure you with you here that the changes I've made to it and to the Quentin Skinner page mean that I have now avoided the possibility that you raised of it being WP:A10'd. If you have any other feedback or advice I would also love to hear it. All the best, Gulielmus Rosseus (talk) 16:22, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi @Gulielmus Rosseus: thanks for your message, and for following up on all that work. I think the new article looks good, and IMO isn't any more subject to A10 deletion as it clearly expands upon what is in the parent article, in other words it has become a viable content split.
My only slight concern is that the new article is only supported by a single source (which BTW hopefully does actually support it fully, ie. lists all those works?), so if you can add another source or two, that would be great.
I think the 'example farm' tag can be removed from the parent article now, likewise the unreferenced tag from the new one. Thanks, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:38, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks again DoubleGrazing, the footnote that you refer to was actually intended to substantiate the claim that he was a regarded as a founder of the Cambridge School for his writings on his historical method. But I have now added a footnote which does fully support the article in the manner you describe, viz. the exhaustive list of Skinner's publications published on Queen Mary's website. All the best, Gulielmus Rosseus (talk) 17:05, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

Coordinates

Sure, it's quite straightforward. If you go to any Wikidata entry that has coordinates, and put in decimal coordinates, Wikidata will convert them into Degrees Minutes Seconds. Try it. Anyway, Wikidata then does a terrible job of rounding decimal coordinates. Mathematically, it can only round the following correctly: D, D.d, D.dd, D.ddd but only where the last digit is a 0 or a 5, and D.dddd but only where the last two digits are 00, 25, 50 or 75. So, for example, 75.2175 W converts to 75°13′03″ W exactly. What I do is use Wikimapia.org. It continuously displays the coordinates of the little reticle, and when you have got your spot, just click on them in the lower left corner and they pop up so you can copy and paste. Wikimapia allows you to instantly toggle between Google Maps, Bing Maps and OSM. Also Wikimapia users usually have already marked the object if it is interesting. Abductive (reasoning) 08:08, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

@Abductive: wow, I never knew any of that! I must have added coords to hundreds of articles, and I'm now thinking I really shouldn't have since I clearly didn't know what I was doing. Thank you so much for taking the time to enlighten me on this — very much appreciated! :) --DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:13, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
I'm sure that most of your coordinates are fine, since the most important thing is that they hit the target. The issues of too many or too few digits pale in comparison to the awful coordinates I've been correcting, which point to the wrong building blocks away, or put a naval battle on land. DYK for Villa Tammekann

On 23 March 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Villa Tammekann, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the bank initially refused to provide a mortgage for the 1932 Alvar Aalto–designed house Villa Tammekann in Tartu until its flat roof was replaced by a pitched one? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Villa Tammekann. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Villa Tammekann), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hello there, thank you for your comments about my draft for the page Seoul Robotics. It's my first article in a few years so I am a bit unfamiliar with the upload process. Seems that I accidentally published the article without citations included. I've reviewed the article and added references throughout, please let me know if there is anything else! ps. Agean Cymbals

Hi there! Thanks for your comments. You said you'd be interested in seeing some more sources, and I found some Turkish language secondary sources for the article which I think help confirm its notability. Of course, Google Translate can only get you so far but I think this helps support the article impartially and there's no paywall on any of them, unlike the MD article. Chrishillflute (talk) 13:42, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi @Chrishillflute: thanks for your message. I've had a look at the new sources, and I think it's certainly heading in the right direction. That said, the AA piece is cited twice, and the Milliyet article just repeats that, so effectively those three count as just one reference AFAIK. As for Marmara Life, I'm not familiar with that, but it looks like a glorified blogging site to me, so I don't think that qualifies as RS. Given the background to this article, if I were to change my vote, it would need to be on solid enough grounds to be beyond any doubt (and I'm sure you'd want that, too). Would be good to hear what the members of relevant WikiProjects (esp. percussion) make of this. In any case, I don't think this AfD will, or should, be decided on my vote alone; I expect it be relisted for wider discussion. Cheers, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:41, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

deleted page: Flying Dodo Brewing Company

Hi there. You deleted my page about the Flying Dodo Brewing Company :-( and I didn't have time to amend or change anything. I read your message about a possible conflict of interest and how to manage it but with the time difference I only saw this morning that my page was gone. Would you be kind to allow me to make changes to it? There is not that many contributions I can bring in that field in Mauritius and that's definitely something I can do! Thanks in anticipation --Mauritianbeerguy (talk) 06:17, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi @Mauritianbeerguy: thanks for your message. Just so we're clear, I did not delete the article; I'm not an administrator, and therefore have no such powers. (I did ask for the article be deleted, but that's different.) For the same reason, I cannot bring it back, either. The speedy deletion notice on your talk page should have a link for contacting the admin who deleted it, if you wish to request its restoration.
I should probably mention, though, that IIRC the article had two issues, promotional nature and lack of notability, so you would need to do quite a lot to improve it (including but not only adding reliable, independent secondary sources with significant coverage of the subject, to satisfy WP:GNG and/or WP:COMPANY notability). I'm only saying this so you understand that even if you do convince the deleting admin to restore the article, it may well get deleted at AfD, and that's then pretty much the end of the road for it.
As for your possible conflict of interest, that's only indirectly related to the matter. If you do have a COI, you shouldn't really be editing this article in the first place, even if you do disclose your COI, and certainly not without. So if you do decide to ask for the article to be restored, you should also be prepared to disclose any relationship you may have with the company in question or any people associated with it, and explain how you're going to rewrite the article to ensure it is neutral and free of bias. Hope this helps, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 06:47, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
Hello @DoubleGrazing: oh man. I need to take some courage and re-write the whole thing using your tips then. That shall keep me busy :-) Thanks for the honest feedback. Cheers

deleted page: Creeps And Weirdos

Hello, I/ve been contributing to the Crypto Art page, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crypto_art, Creeps and weirdos is notable as one of the first collections tokenized on Ethereum, it has historical importance along with CryptoPunks and Crypto Kitties. There are pages about those two projects but not on this one which is why I created it. I think is neutral, I tried to follow what they did for CryptoPunks https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CryptoPunks. Could you let me know what sounded promotional or how to improve it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quanade (talkcontribs)

Hi @Quanade: no, I'm afraid I can't tell you, as I didn't note down specifics, and now that the article has been deleted I no longer can access it. From memory, I didn't see much encyclopaedic content in it; it seemed more like marketing blurb (and the deleting administrator evidently agreed with me). And regarding notability (in the Wikipedia WP:N sense of the word), the sources cited didn't come close to establishing that. As for how to improve it, you clearly cannot improve it now that it has been deleted, unless you first get the deleting admin to restore the article, which, given that you seem to have a possible COI with the subject, could prove difficult. Best, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 11:50, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
@DoubleGrazing: I am part of the crypto art ecosystem (I publicly noted so), but my main motivation is not the promotion of any of these projects but to make sure the early ones don't get erased from the history of crypto art. Especially the ones that don't make headlines for record sales. There was an early project, Artolin, that I haven't been able to include because there was no press, which doesn't mean it is not notable.
But anyway I understand your point of view, of course. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quanade (talkcontribs)
@Quanade: thanks, noted. BTW, you should disclose your COI for all the articles where it exists (currently you've only done it for one, and even that's redlinked due to mismatched capitalisation). And PS: please remember to sign your comments, thanks. :) Best, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 12:16, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi DoubleGrazing, I saw your comments on the two pages I created last night. This is my first Wikipedia article, and I appreciate your assistance in getting me starting on the right track. I am fascinated with Reliability Engineering, and I have decided to turn to Wikipedia to enrich the content on the web. The Failure Mode Conservation Priciniple is something I have studied, but unfortunately not covered anywhere on the web. I created the page, hoping to get more users to contribute. Also, there are so many brilliant Reliability Scientists out there with no presence on Wikipedia, Vasiliy Krivtsov, Nelson Aalen, and David Cox.

  • I have made some changes to Vasiliy KrivtsovVasiliy Krivtsov, and I would appreciate your feedback and guidance on how to make the page aligned with Wikipedia's rules.
  • As far as the Failure Mode Conservation Principle page, I added this one hoping to get more users to contribute

How do you suggest approaching that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sarouk7 (talkcontribs)

Hi @Sarouk7: thanks for dropping by my talk page. The most important thing when creating new articles, or indeed adding any content, is to cite your sources. Even if what you say is true, even if you're the world's foremost expert on the topic, you still need to cite external published sources (and WP:RS reliable ones, at that) to support your edits. Otherwise they can and will be removed as unreferenced. And when it comes to publishing an article that cites no sources at all, that won't survive very long, as it will inevitably be tagged for deletion, as has happened here. (Even if you do add sources, that alone doesn't guarantee that the article will remain, as it can be challenged on various grounds, but at least it's a good start.) If you haven't yet done so, I would recommend studying carefully the guidelines at WP:N and especially WP:GNG, which will tell you more. Hope that helps, and all the best on your Wikipedia journey! :) (Oh, and PS: Please sign your comments by using the four tildes, per WP:SIG, or by simply clicking the 'signature and timestamp' button in the menu bar above the edit window. Thanks.) --DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:13, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

Patera Building

Did you mean to PROD the article? Because what I saw was a PROD for the Talk page. David notMD (talk) 17:30, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi @David notMD: I did (and did mean to) PROD the article, yes, rightly or wrongly, for the reasons enumerated here. The creator dePRODded it, IMO incorrectly, and since then the discussion has moved on, although I would contend the issues remain (and have possibly become more, see eg. the image copyright question). --DoubleGrazing (talk) 18:51, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
I had hoped to have no reason to look at that article anymore, but the creator added a HUGE unreferenced section which I felt morally bound to delete. David notMD (talk) 21:50, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Translating a page and citations in different language

Hi, Excellenc1 here. I want to create a new and translated page out of the French page Garden City, Suresne or say, I want to create an English version of this page, is it possible? Also, can I use the same citations used in this page though they are in another language? — Preceding undated comment added 06:30, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi @Excellenc1: take a look at HELP:HOWTRANS, it tells you pretty much all you need to get started. As for using the same references, that would be ideal and the easiest option (and yes, non-English sources are perfectly acceptable, as long as they otherwise meet reliability etc. criteria), but unfortunately I've often found that they're not enough (other language wikis seem to have lower referencing and/or notability requirements), or some of them have gone stale. Best, --DoubleGrazing (talk) 06:47, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for your guidance, I'll visit the article. Excellenc1 (talk) 07:02, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Images from Wikipedia

Hi! Can I use the images from the Wikipedia page from which I am using the text (to make the new one)? Excellenc1 (talk) 10:10, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

@Excellenc1: yep, if they're in the Commons, they can be used on any WP site (and elsewhere) AFAIK, although I'm by no means an expert on this. If they've been uploaded only to the French wiki, you may (?) need to transfer them across to the Commons first (assuming they can be transferred; some can't, due to local licensing laws). As I said, I'm not an expert in this, though, so if you have any more challenging questions you may wish to ask within the Commons where those in the know hang out. --DoubleGrazing (talk) 11:33, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
