February 2023[edit]

Information icon Hello. This is a message to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions, such as the edit(s) you made to Joe West (umpire), did not appear to be constructive and have been reverted. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with our policies and guidelines. You can find information about these at our welcome page which also provides further information about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. If you only meant to make test edits, please use your sandbox for that. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. I constructively corrected the bullshit that was on this page... there was never a shoving match between Joe torre and West... I should know - I was there.
And the Federal Court order MLB to reinstate the umpires, just as I wrote.
If you aren't going to leave my page alone, please remove it completely. I don't need anyone knowing anything about me ... and I certainly don't need anyone reading things that are not true.
Either reinstate what I wrote or erase the entire page .... I'm tired of correcting your lies.

Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Crewchief22. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Joe West (umpire), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. An IP has claimed to be Joe West on this talk page. If you are connected to West in some way, you should know that you are not permitted to edit the Wikipedia page about you due to your conflict of interest. —Ganesha811 (talk) 19:18, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I need your name and address so I can give it to my lawyer when he files charges against Wikipedia.
You are putting Wikipedia in a very compromising position. (Redacted)

  • Mr. West. There is a right and a wrong way to correct factual errors on Wikipedia. Doing it yourself is regarded as sketchy, but can be pursued if one is careful to fix only what is erroneous, to document assertions of fact, and not to attempt to render content one-sidedly. However you'd definitely be best advised to hook up with a sympathetic experienced WP volunteer, who can navigate the labyrinth of rules and customs and make the corrections necessary. Believe it or not, we do want to get things right. Definitely the wrong play is to threaten legal action, however. It brings an instant block from editing and is like a red cape to a bull (sort of like arguing balls-and-strikes with a mother-oath thrown in) — highly unproductive. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:No_legal_threats Please retract your legal threats and then let's see if we can get an established Wikipedia volunteer or two on board to clean up any errors of fact or phrasing which may appear on your page. Feel free to email me if you are blocked from using this page: [email protected] best regards, —tim

Moving forward[edit]

Crewchief22:

You have now run into two issues. First if you are Joe West you will need to confirm your identity and you will need to stop making legal threats. The first thing to do will be confirm your identity. Please send an email to info-en@wikimedia.org including your real name and your Wikipedia username to receive instructions from our volunteer response team about account verification. Please do not send documentation without being requested to do so. Please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. In order to protect Joe West's name if you are not him, I have removed your ability to edit this talk page.

Second you will need to withdraw your legal threats. If you think there are issues with your coverage on Wikipedia you may also contact the Volunteer Response Team about those issues, either in the same email above or in an email to info-en-q@wikimedia.org. Barkeep49 - I'm not sure how shutting down talk page access brings things towards a reasoned conclusion. How is he supposed to retract legal threats? Moreover I think we can accept his assertion of IRL identity without forcing him to jump bureaucratic hoops. Carrite (talk) 05:18, 13 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I personally agree his identity is verified at this point as well so that's no longer a concern. He can retract his legal threats either through VRT or the unblock request system as would any other editor who makes direct legal threats against editors after being blocked. If some other admin feels the removal of talk page access is no longer necessary they can restore that without consulting me. Emailing is hardly some burdensome step and has the added bonus of putting Mr. West in touch with editors who have signed a agreement for confidentiality and who have been vetted to handle private situations. The good news is it seems like many of his concerns have been addressed with no effort on his part after the interview showing Wikipedians desire to follow our content policies and guidelines.
