Regarding your voice of protest on racist comments at the reference desk ...

Needless to say, I find your stance commendable.
In this case, it's at least one user with a long history of low-level but persistent posting of inflammatory diatribes disguised as questions and replies. See also here and here, as well as here too. The problematic behavior has been mentioned at the desks' talk page, most recently here and here, but the IP account would need a range-block. Ignoring (and/or reverting) seems to be the best solution. Wollte dir nur Bescheid geben. Hey there Cookatoo, just droping a note to let you know that your sentiments on the RD talk are not without merit. The problem that the "guardians of the RD" face is to maintain that forum as a Reference desk and not a Discussion desk. Sometimes the edges get a bit fuzzy and so we let it all hang out on the RD talk page. None of us is "superior" in that any one of us can disagree and even revert if we feel strongly. Reference desk[edit]

The reason is simple. I have devoted my senescence to attain the goal of omnignorance by reducing my knowledge exponentially from an initial frame of reference (in my case this is my conception / gastrulation, but this is merely a relativistic aspect).

Already, the bliss commonly associated with ignorance has resulted in the paradoxon that I know almost all there is to know about nothing. And, as you may have guessed, I have devoted my time exclusively to this very lemma, "Nothing".

From the lengthy article of six months ago (containing many a picture of the subject matter) I have reduced the volume to just seven letters, which I have recently quoted as a reference on the appropriately named reference desk.

Deleting these 7 superfluous letters to, finally, express the very essence of Nothingness will keep me busy for a while yet and requires my monitoring the WP:RD for diligent research into the subject matter.

But beware: Once the article on the Omnignorance of Nothing is published, it will, like a black hole, attract and annihilate all other parts of the Wikipedia Universe. It will reduce the space-time continuum to what it once may have been: a singularity of Nothing.

Austrian newspapers[edit]

Hi Helmut, just thought I'd ask you for your opinion on something. I want to read Austrian newspapers as a way of improving my German. The main quality papers seem to be Der Standard, Kurier and Die Presse. Would you recommend any one of these over the others? The only thing I know about them is that the Standard is supposed to be socially liberal (which is fine by me); what are the political leanings of the other two? Hi Richard, IMHO:

Der Standard is, as you say, left-liberal,
Die Presse conservative-catholic,
Der Kurier is, sort of, in between, also in the aspect of quality.

I would consider the first two, Standard and Presse, to be on the same level whilst Der Kurier is a thinking person´s Kronen Zeitung, the latter being a paper I would restrict to be utilised in a public convenience in the absence of suitably scrolled cleansing leaflets.

Der Standard (which I get every Saturday) offers sometimes a temporary and quite cheapish subscription, which you may want to use for an inexpensive "sniff and read" trial. Maybe, in a measurement of "pure" quality, the Presse is the "better" paper by a whisker, but I stopped reading it some years ago when a series of partisan lead articles were on the borderline of polemic ad hominem slurs. I thought it to be inexcusable to plonk a smelly chamber pot onto the front page of a newspaper for intelligent readers.

You could also consider poking your nose into Profil (magazine), a weekly newsmagazine which is oriented towards the left-liberal political spectrum. Quite a few highly respected journalists contribute to this periodical. --Cookatoo.ergo.ZooM (talk) 11:22, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for the information and the length to which you went to secure it! I was beginning to regret that I'd posted such a detailed query on the Ref Desk rather than on the article's Talk page, which is where I'll eventually transfer the information that I can't work authoritatively into the mainspace page. I did leave a head's-up note to the page's creator who translated it from the German Wikipedia. (I'm still dismayed that there's none in the Czech.) So we'll see how this can develop, as I've just started on some bios of musicians and artists in the Theresienstadt ghetto, the great majority of whom, after a productive flurry there, were sent for extermination at Auschwitz. I admire you humility in attempting to write an apology, but deplore the apparent self-righteousness in the apology itself which conveys no sentiment of contrition at all. Your bullet points are irrelevant. 1. Wikipedia is not a playground, there are rules (see below). 2. Wikipedia is not a democracy and free-speech is not a right here. 3. If you had posted an opinion we would not be having this conversation. Even in democracies free-speech has its limits. Taking the piss by deliberately posting nonsense does not show respect for the questioner and some would consider it offensive. One thing is for sure it defeats the purpose of the RefDesk and can only lead to encouraging others to post nonsense responses, perhaps even maliciously. The fact that I was the questioner here is largely irrelevant and those who have argued for the re-posting your material in respect of this don't seem to have realised this. The Wikipedia:Reference desk/Guidelines state .... "Further, we never set out deliberately to offend, and we endeavor to quickly remove needlessly offensive material in questions or responses. The German source does not seem to address your question on the similarities / differences between the original Ruthenische Bauernpartei / Ruthenian Peasants Party and the Bäuerliche Volkspartei / Popular-Christian Party. I noticed, however, that the German writer in 19?? translated Christiansko narodna partija as Bäuerliche Volkspartei (which translates as "the Peasants´ Peoples Party") and skipped the Christian label.
